I got the idea that, marrying well was very important for her because her career was going nowhere, she needed a name to help her promote Herself! She was definitely not unheard of. You yourself even mentioned a Grammy. You might say her career was declining or soared when she got with him, but "unheard of" is quite the exaggeration.
