SAS MD-82 impressive 'zoom' climb

- I'm convinced that SAS have secretly fitted afterburners to the Pratt & Whitney JT8D engines on their MD-82 aircraft. With all that smoke, noise and awesome 'vertical' climbs from the runway surely reheat is the only possible explanation?
This is flight SK2534 on its way to 60,000 feet from runway 33 at BHX.
So there is nothing wrong with me thinking this is the most fascinating airliner ever!
You are not in need of treatment!
Heck no! Same here! It's a shame American is going to phase them out soon.
K-max
worked on these years ago as a mech. Loved them. Solidly built unlike the paper planes in the air these days.
I've seen test pilots take them up on fairly steep angles. Closest thing you can get to a rocket powered plane, in an airliner
I never thought that these jets had enough wing on them to keep them airborne! Clearly I was wrong, as they perform like an absolute hot rod.
I remember flying md82 SAS and 83 artours as a youngster..... Definitely the steepest climb rate I've ever experienced..... With vc10 and then 757 with RR RB211's :)
SAS DC9-21 and SAS MD87="The Rockets"
Specially on ferry flights with no pax on board.
:)
The MD 80 class of airplanes seems to be my favorite to fly on. Quite a bit of takeoff power but extremely smooth plane to fly on.
What an awesome and impressive climb out!
Brilliant sight. Really miss the SAS MD80s. A real rocket-esque takeoff there. Nice video.
Beautiful aircraft 😊
Nice video. What camera do you use? Some of your videos are brilliant quality!
The zoom lens makes it look steeper than it is. I have been told by a pilot that the MD 80 series did not have the climb rate of the DC 9-30. They were fun both fit passengers & pilots.
Impressive, most impressive.
21 seconds takeoff run is very short for a plane this size. Wow!
Impressive 👏
What stuff did you used to get this footage?
I doubt there are afterburners. It is probably a plane with no passengers or cargo, equaling ultra rocket ship capabilities. The MD-82 has a very high thrust to weight ratio as it is. And they also leave smoke normally. These pilots probably had a strong headwind too, plus an empty aircraft and possibly less than half fuel due to no payload = rocket plane.
Was looking for an explanation and found it, thank you
They got the Volvo RM8B in it :D JT8D with swedish afterburner ;)
Great angle!
That is a very long plane!
That was a *steep* climb, my goodness!
Thank you - it will be missed.
The description made me giggle. Great aircraft!
Back when SAS was a respectable airline.
Wow, how could the aircraft climb at such high angle of attack?Because of the wing structure?
+Robert Diaz
How does a "sharp rotation" or a high angle of climb benefit a "nose heavy" airplane???
Nose heavy would mean higher wing loading, I would not want to pitch up sharply or a lot on an airplane with a high wing loading.
+Robert Diaz
Please go back to your flight simulator, you really lack the knowledge and for what I've seen you just make uneducated comments about aviation. Seriously you just make a full of yourself.
+Robert Diaz
Stolen picture? You are an idiot Robert Diaz, stop making a fool of yourself!
+Robert Diaz Are you like 12 years old or sthg
and you go eat a potato
Md-80:excuse me young kid old ladys gotta pass
A320: :3
At least she's still got some life left in her.😊
@@m.hstudioproductions6642 Not anymore unfortunately, SAS retired their Mad Dogs a few years ago now.
@@aviationlba747 oh yeah, back in 2012. They sold some of them to Allegiant and Delta until 2018-2020.
What's that black on top of the rear right engine?
some one APU exhaust.
that's one wavy ass runway
I thought I was the only one that saw that. When I played the video, the first thing I saw was a weird runway with hills. That's scary.
Brianna McCollum only if the pilot is a tard. I would think it would help with landing/take off in different wind circumstances.
Thrashaero maybe I should look at Hartsfield-Jackson in Atlanta and see if it's like that.
+Thrashaero Don't worry, its just the camera+zoom giving it that illusion
+Christian Nielsen yeah ok sure.
On its way to 60 000 feet??? Yr description
Read it, totally understand mate. Thanks anyway.
Sadly?!
This Pilot was maybe aware of the noice a MD80 creates!
So in order NOT to disturb citizens in the closest area they where climbing
out with an extra high angle!
Very photo/video genic :)
sas md-82's one of this last flights
wow super video thanks for sharing your great view on this plane
Wow
Superb and a zoom climb
is this the 2-engine version of Tu154?
love it
I loved the mad dog - Unfortunately it got killed by the B 737 and A 320
its cuz of all the weight in the back it climbs a bit like a rocket
Stunning vertical takeoffs!
amazing
To infinity and beyond!
Are you sure that wasn't a rocket blasting off!
helluva bird
climbing like a sud 210 caravelle!
Well, The swedish fighter Viggen had a licence build JT8D with burner, so SAS probably fitted their maddogs with surplus engines. :P
shhh... don't tell everyone. Also, viewing near the runway centreline helps.
Obviously lightly loaded. Probably short haul flight. Still impressive though.
Also, what would it be like inside?!
Hmmm, so this is where Maverick went after he left the Navy
Looks like a short cut to beyond!
Get off the runway, Airbus. A real aircraft is about to take off!
Airbus? that plane was built in the US. Get your shit together..
and better built
Nate Evancho he’s talking about the other plane that was landing at the beginning of the video, it seems to be an airbus 320 or 319. He’s telling that airbus to get off the runway to give way for a real plane... the md 80. Take a chill pill
For sure at the this moment there was plenty of headwind factor to help plane here. But good job though.
that runway tho
Every runway is like that
who said runways were flat....
never taking a md-80 again scared the hell out of me on my first flight. but luckily the next plane was 757.
Самолет, самолет-забери меня в полет.
60'000 feet?
really miss the real noise those planes made
Thank you! - but pls see my response to Airshowlover100 in video "Movements at BHX (Birmingham Airport)" about kit.
it has to be a ferry flight.
no, normal one
@@flugsnug why would they want to climb like that? even if the plane is capable of doing it can't they get in trouble for scaring the passengers?
Not known as the pocket rocket for nothing !
Just a little joke - it reminds me of a fighter with reheat on zoom-climbing from runway nearly to space!
Mad Dog
So a zoom climb is basically a very steep climb? Why is there a need for a name when it could be called just that?
Normal climbs rely on aerodynamic lift being generated by the wings, in a full zoom climb the the attitude of the aircraft means that the wings can no longer generate lift, all altitude gain is therefore the result of thrust from the engines and the converting of any forward speed the aircraft may have into height (K.E. to P.E).
I did not_think that a plane like this could "zoom climb" and the wings & main gear are so far back.
hope you didn't have a drink on you tray top!
not really vertical, but impressive anyway!
these engines look so small on this plane
Nunca mais voou para o Brasil, desde 29 de Dezembro de 1992 ultimo Boeing 767-200 decolando de Guarulhos
They'll soon have to issue g-suits to passengers!
Choklad
foot work
Must've been Denzel Washington.
This guy is posting Flight simulators footage and tricking people into thinking its real life
Fly it like you stole it.
Loved every flight with a SAS MD-80. Zoom take offs, the lot. So, so quiet up front. LHR-CPH, CPH-ARN and too many others to recall. Did the last CPH-ARN back in 2013 if I remember correctly
Wow
