Yea I called my AP for short, but the autopilot never stuck around long enough to give me time to think of an actual name lol, and I love the sailing community. I'm glad you also have had that positive experience. There are some incredible and very talented people out here. Thanks for watching :)
The sailing community is rockin such trustworthy community I’ve never sailed a sailboat I’m scared of the sharks and ocean but I’m wanting to get out and do it I just went through a divorce and I’m selling my marijuana farm in Arkansas and I’m looking at buying a Cabo Rico 38’ modified full keel barn door rudder worm gear steering wheel Perkins 4108
Loa 38’ but 5 ‘ is bow sprit which I’m a fan of it’s a cutter with hank on thinking of a new Harkins roller but almost $6 thousand dollars anyway love your channel and yes the sailing community is very trustworthy and honest people that wouldn’t never try and disregard certain people considering the Masonic culture are not smoking government turds

I tried them all and pelagic works the best and you can get a remote control. I us it on my westsail 32 as a full time sailor.

Those things seem to wear out often. When that Free Ranger, was rrepairing his fourth one, he figured out how to rig it up to his wind vave steering to gain leverage. Sam Holmes just did it too. You just need a wind vane steering system now! Good luck and have fun!
Yea, on the new boat, the Bristol Channel Cutter, I'll be able to set that up easy with the transom-hung rudder and trim tab. The little electric autopilots are no bueno from my experience. Sounds interesting about rigging it to the wind vane to gain leverage. I'm gonna have to find those videos and see how they did it. Thanks for the pointer.

Just remember those autopilots are Not water proof. I punch a hole in a plastic bag for the ram to go through and the rest in the garbage bag to keep it dry and out of the sun whilst being used. Great vid seeing you being self sufficient as always..

I came across your videos several weeks ago, and for some reason I was kind of turned off from the channel. I don't know if I even finished that episode. I'm glad I gave it another chance after it was recommended to me again a couple weeks ago. I have since enjoyed your content, and it is a nice reminder that a boat doesn't need to be "perfect" to get out there an enjoy cruising. It also shows you don't have to know how to do everything, as there are many sources and people to learn from. Keep up the good work! I look forward to the next.

shoulda seen my first install... that was much harder because I had to take measurements on the tiller and install a teeny little support block on the cockpit, which ended up coming lose. But if I can do it, you definitely can haha thanks for watching and commenting :)

Putting the electrical connection tabs on the auto pilot was better than a lot of so called professional elec/mechanics... well done... may I ask what the Yellow tie strap is for it seems in the way for you.........thank you for another vid....."stay safe out there"
Thank you! The yellow strap is a jackline. It’s what I clip into when I go up on deck especially in rough seas. I kept it through the cockpit so I could clip in before going on deck. Because it was such a small boat, it was safer to have the jackline come through the center rather than one on each deck. But it did get in the way of the tiller sometimes.

Little tech tip on the side: You can just use a lighter to get rid of cable sheaths. Just heat the needed area and rip is off with your fingers. May be self explanatory but pay attention as is can be quite hot. Though after a few cables you get a feeling for for it to reduce the risk.

Attwood horbour is gorgeous in southerlies. If any N component to the swells arises, it's a death trap....good spear fishing on the west, creek runs through to the bight
Oh yes. Wait for my next video. I think we had a northerly component to the swells. It was MISERABLE. I did see the creek you're talking about but didn't get to go down it. Great job with the auto pilot, Nicole! I'm willing to install one, also, as I sail solo. Wondering if those are waterproof, my Leisure 17 gets quite wet on choppy waters. Thx for sharing, keep the videos coming, They're very inspiring!
Thanks for watching! I can't say that I'd recommend a tiller pilot. I've had bad experiences with them over and over. They're good to have, but I'd plan on a backup or expect to have to steer when it does eventually fail. They are waterproof, but the wiring is not, so you'll need to spray the plug with Corrosion X (the kind that is safe for electronics).
Ok, thx for the feedback. I can see it can bring some sort of of uncertainty with a tiller pilot... Well, I really like steering and all manual work, so no big deal living without one. Can't wait for your next video,! Thanks, Nicole!
I enjoyed the video! Does a tiller autopilot connect to a GPS? Does it have an internal compass? My question is how does it know to make course corrections?
This tiller autopilot does connect to a GPS with a nmea2000 cable or SeaTalk cable, but I didn’t connect it. It does have an internal compass. I had it steer to a compass heading, so it would adjust whenever the boat was off heading. There are different settings depending on sea state
What I do differently with crimp connectors is I crimp the connector, realize I forgot to put the heat shrink on. Then I cut the new end off, put the heat shrink on the wire and crimp again. I guess your way works too though 😉🤣

Ps the simrad can be controlled via a b&g chart plotter. You can set a course or set it to go at a wind angle.
I was gonna say that as well , those extra wires are for the NMEA connection and then ANY chartplotter with NMEA 0183 or 2000 will " see " that Autopilot and you can plot a course and yipee yay away you go !!
I tried to do that with my raymarine but I think I got the blue and brown wires mixed up because it never worked, and I had to quickly install this one so I didn't really bother with trying to hook up the chart plotter. But it's something I think I'd like to set up for in the future, or at least have an alarm for when the boat is off course

Ugh it's so crazy because by the time I got to the DR, I was hand-steering and all three autopilots had failed me for different reasons, and the outboard affected the weight of the boat to where I couldn't do sheet-to-tiller and get the boat balanced. Needless to say, I'm excited for the new boat where I can do the windvane setup too.

Shame that a big marine company like Simrad let themselves - & you - down by supplying equipment wired with plain copper and not tinned wire.

Hmm, I don't really know the difference.. but I ended up having problems with it, too.
@@SailingArtha Tinned cable has all the strands in the wire coated in... actually I've no idea what they are coated in. It may be tin, or possibly lead solder... Anyway, the effect is the same as the galvanising (zinc! I know that one! :-) ) on your anchor chain. Copper wire will corrode fairly fast in a salty atmosphere, it turns black, becomes much more resistant and equipment that likes steady voltages and amperages stop working. Tinned wire doesn't corrode. It is more expensive, about 1/3 more last time I bought some, but the cost per item to a company like Simrad should be a. minimal and b. should be automatic for electrical equipment in a marine environment. Simrad are not alone in this by any means, my Beta engine's panel wiring is all plain copper to... Good luck with it anyway and keep on! Fair winds. M

You are a gutsy young lady , but you sure are a messy person. I think you could be given a clean fresh boat and you would have it looking like you’re current boat within no time. My brother is 20 years younger than me and he has the ability to junk up any space he takes over.
Having said this , you are real and very smart and gutsy, just tidy up a little bit. There is no need to live like you take no pride in your surroundings.

Yes, it's a top priority for my new boat. That's why it's taken me so long to move in. There's so much more storage that things don't have to live in the main living area.
