About a year ago, I made a few serving boards from some sawmill scraps that were in my firewood pile. This year I wanted to make a bunch more for gifts and to switch things up, I decided the focus of this video should be on the batching process vs the prototyping process that we went through last time. This video was inspired by a viewer who asked how long each board would take to make.

THANK YOU FOR NO MUSIC!!!!!! In the background, it was wonderful to watch a video with natural sound on. 💝💝💝
Love the sense of humor and easy- going nature. Regularly chuckling to yourself about something or other. 😊
Ive been watching you mill logs for a long time and enjoy seeing the grainin the boards. This is the first time I watched you make something useful like the charcuterie boards. Awsome display of how you go about making them in batches. I learned the steps to make my own boards thanks for an excellent teaching class.
These look like a good project to batch out. Seeing your “batching” process helps. This year I batched out turned ice cream scoops for the first time. It was a real learning process because batching things out is a lot different than just making a single item.
Matt,
I love it. I’m a creator of artisan charcuterie along with a good friend for our own use. Your boards are beautiful and perfect for the fun side of displaying thinly sliced charcuterie Coppa, Brasola, salamitties, prosciutto etc. Fun stuff salute 👍🏻🇺🇸
I am really happy you did this. I have been watching a lot of sawmill videos recently trying to learn all I can and so many sawyers toss so much wood in the burn pile that can be used for smaller items than a slab table. It could be sold as is to woodworkers even. Maybe not for much but to pay the fuel bill!
Awesome Matt. Thanks so much for the plug!
Thanks for sharing with us Matt, great serving tray and slicing boards 👍👍👍👍👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Matt, I just recently found your channel and have been going through a lot of your videos. I'm about to start on the sawmill playlist right now, actually. Your work is truly amazing and you have a great attitude and demeanor that is a joy to watch. Keep up the great work!
Thank you so much, Matt!
Just came across your videos and I’m enjoying them. Found myself watching the cycle of propping up the clock on the planer and the subsequent slow slipping until you finally just laid it down. Soothing :)
Merry Christmas Matt and Family from Tallahassee, Florida. I really enjoy your channel and your enthusiasm.
my week before christmas gift for everyone is brazilian cumaru coasters. Ive made 60 of them, only 18 are actually finished so far, 3 sets of 6.
They are end cuts from some amazing teak hard wood flooring I installed. I preserved the flooring finish on the top and routered out the bottom for feet and rounded off all the sides. Finishing wax and done.
I think the greatest thing I took away from this video is confirmation that batching out in higher quantities is always worth it if you can do so. I've made a few boards 1 or 2 at a time and I'm no where near 16 minutes! :) Thanks for sharing.
Gotta add a zero on there 😄
I made a bunch of those this year as well Along with some osage, walnut, oak, tiger maple and Brazilian cherry cutting boards
Love the board but I REALLLLLY LOVE those custom drawer fronts!!!! Why have I never thought of that 😲🥰😁🙌
Love the video. I especially like the timing included! Well done
From firewood to beautiful serving trays. Very nicely done.
thanks!
Yet another GREAT VIDEO.
I actually learned a lot from it. Got some great ideas and knowledge on how to make a piece of otherwise fire wood into a useful and practical item. Thanks again Matt .
awesome to hear! Thanks!
This video inspired me to go out to my firewood pile and find a nice almost flat piece of cedar to start working. I've been out in my garage with the hand planes for about 2 hours now. I've got a ways to go but I think it's turning out nice.
Excellent!
Always fun Matt, even watching you sand.Happy Holidays!
Happy New Year! Thanks for all the content in 2018! Best wishes to you and yours!
Thanks!
That's a great idea, I've been using those "flitches" for experimenting with my new hobby " Lichtenberg" .
A master at such a young age...so great...
Great job as usual Matthew, beautiful firewood. Just a suggestion, if you throw that piece of noskid you use when sanding in the wash with a load of blue jeans it’ll be a lot more grippy, like when it was new.
Merry Christmas to you and your family.
As usual beautiful project. I love the simplicity. Merry Christmas to you and your family.
Thank you!
Nice! Good way to use your scraps! Nice to safe those from the fireplace
There is something so satisfying about the sound of that draw knife 🎶👂🏼
Speaking of, what draw knife is that? I'm looking for a nice large draw knife.
Lie Nielsen curved
Nothing goes to waste. Man after my own heart.
love the boards! Great video. ...now those culinary knife skills, pinch and claw, pinch and claw. Happy holidays!
lol thanks!
Best wishes to you and yours for 2019, Matt!!!!
Thanks!!
Dust extractor looks pretty sweet!!
Enjoyed watching. You’re a smart guy.
New sub and follower. I know it may sound weird but you have a contagious giggle and it really helps me. The giggle helps me smile and I need more of that in my life! Beautiful pieces by the way! Inspiration for gifts for next Christmas. I am new to woodworking and don't have nearly the kind of tools you have. Time to start UA-cam learning how to accomplish projects like these with what I have. Thanks for your content.
Thanks Andy!
Merry Christmas to you and the family!
Thanks Ron! You too!
YOU DROPPED SOMETHING!!
Matt, Are you what some people call a Master Carpenter. To me, it looks like you are one.
thank you Matt
6:24 Warms my heart to see that happens to the professionals too sometimes.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family.
Thanks! You too!
"Finger bevel thingies." One of the challenges I've had with woodworking is mastering all the technical terminology. :)
Thanks for the ideas.
Merry Christmas Matt and family.
thanks!
Great work as always. Merry Christmas.
Thanks Ben!
Just found this channel. A lot of fun to watch and seems like a great guy!
thank you!
great job Matt
Love the fingerstyle guitar music while finishing

What a great idea! Fun video
Very nice idea. Something that I enjoy are pizza peels, which are great for the chef. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you I enjoy your videos always
so much nicer than a rectangle
Fun video to watch Matt! I like the clock in the background.
thanks!
Awesome as always man.
thanks!
Interesting to watch the process....
It's a beautiful project. Thanks for what you post on you tube
Thanks!
@@mcremona I guess I must ask if there is any permission needed to create this project for myself. It is a interesting project
No permission needed to duplicate anything I make. Thanks!
Another great vijeo as always. Was a little shocked to hear you cutting the souprasada,( spelling? ) My favorite. Have a wonderful Christmas. I don't think many people have heard about it or tried it. Thanks again.
sopressata. A staple in my house :)
@@mcremona i need to learn to spell. Have a wonderful Christmas n New Year.
Great job
Merry christmas Paisan!!
DID THE BOSS MAKE THE BREAD ? IT LOOKS GOOD. I HAVE A FEW CASE KNIVES I'AM HAPPY WITH THEM. GOOD WORK AS ALWAYS.
Such a cool idea from basically trash to a great gift!
Excellent video Matt
Thanks!
MERRY CHRISTMAS to you and your family.
thank you!
Your idea of scrapwood increased tremendously with a tremendous bandsaw mill.
Can't burn it fast enough 😄
It would go pretty quick on craigslist. If I was local it would just disappear during the night.
You are the man.
great video. Thanks.
good job!
Brilliant.. I just came across this. I have an edge of a slab that I wasn't sure what to do with. It's 8+ feet long, it'll make a couple of nice boards.
I was told by an old timer, as a rule of thumb for drying out wood to work with, you should allow around 6 month for every 5 to 6 inches. So, if you have a log that is 12 inches in diameter, you should wait 12 months before using for any projects. That's why it's a good idea to build up a supply of wood so you can have some ready to use.
Wood is so cool!
I love it when almost goes to waste. Thnx
For sanding use a large scrap of thick memory foam. It will hold the piece still and maintain a parallel with the sander during different pressures.
Very good
Well done!!!!
thanks!
Thanks for sharing, they look great, and it's nice to see how long things really take to make!
Do you worry about bugs in the wood without going through a kiln? Or do they typically stay out of dry stacks or stickered lumber?
I like this new format of video, since I sell product that I make in batches.
My way of connecting with the batch-man
10:07 oh my! Beautiful
Awesome video.
Have you ever used your saw dust to make Christmas gifts. Our local woodworker makes sawdust wax fire-starters.
Hello! I am not a wood worker, I play guitar, acoustic, which is perhaps where my love of wood comes from. I do not have a sawmill in my backyard, the idea of getting my fingers anywhere near one of those things terries me! I'm going to subscribe to your channel, because it is so blatantly obvious you love what you are doing. that's enough for me and then had your honest sense of of "funny".. Have a good life and, as I learned in the boy scouts, always take good care of your knife!
Thanks!!
Ploughman lunch and couple beers brilliant i wanna set how much. That your portfolio pic right at the end
I make good wood into fire wood... You make fire wood into good wood. 😩😂
Great project and cool video, Matt! Merry Christmas! 👍🏼
😂😂thanks!
You know, you could probably box up those scraps as special super-deluxe "Cremona Custom Kindling" and sell it as fire starter. Can't hurt to try!
I'm just now finding your videos and like them a lot. What did you use to seal your boards? I heard you say it was just going to be 1 heavy coating but I didn't hear why it was
Hey Matt....Happy Holidays to you and your family. Love the videos you put out. I watched a video of you and April Wilkerson making stools from scrap. How thick did you both make them? Also, on the Charcuterie Boards, What is the thickness you look for? Some look like they are barely 3/4".
Thanks. Quite a batch.
There's one thing left in woodworking that I don't understand:
How does one make this type of product such that it stays flat in changing humidity?
For example: Where I live, last years annual average humidity was 70%. If I air dried the board and sent the gift to Alberta, it would dry more over time and distort.
The same happens vise versa, when kiln dried hardwood is imported to the island, it absorbs moisture and deforms.
in house humidity is equal to outside humidity during the warm days, but on winter days it drops to 20%. I made a workbench out of flat sawn lumber in my workshop. When I started have a fire in to warm the place up, that bench would not stay flat no matter how hard I tried. So I collected quarter sawn pieces and made a butcher block bench.
At the 10:20 mark what species is it? Curly maple? It’s beautiful.
And i know my wife would be thrilled if we were toddler free for the night, went out for Italian, came home and at 10:15pm I was back in the workshop... 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
The drawknife shaving was like wood porn. So satisfying!
congratulazioni per il tuo lavoro, che tipo di legno hai utilizzato?
This looks like an enjoyable time spent in the shop.
👍👍👍👍Merry Christmas
Thanks Gib!
Pretty impressive for wood that was on the firewood pile
I can't believe you have supies in Minnesota!
6:24!🤣 love it! Haha
Cool
What is the general thickness the boards? What would you sell them for?
Date often. It is very important. Cheers and Merry Christmas.
Thanks Gary!
What table saw blade do you use and # of teeth when cutting 3/4 plywood ??
