Los Angeles Homeless Man's Isolation Is Causing Mental Health Challenges

  • Prior to my own homelessness, I had a great job in the television industry making sure the world received programs like Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy along with many other syndicated shows. Before that, I was a professional musician for 26 years making my living playing drums. When I was on the streets homeless and told this to people, do you think they believed me?
Benjamin is homeless on the streets of downtown Los Angeles. He shares a story that may be hard to believe but I believe him. It's how he talks with confidence remembering circumstances and dates, and as I said, my own story is hard to believe. There is no reason to believe he is telling anything but the truth. Plus, from experience, more often than not people are telling the truth. Yes, the mind may waver on some details. That happens to all of us. Now add the stress of living on the streets homeless. The mind plays tricks on people experiencing homelessness.
But it's not Benjamin's past that you need to pay attention too. It's what's happening to him now in the present. Benjamin says that homelessness is starting to get to him. The isolation of being on the streets and not having tangible social interactions with other humans is causing him to have in his words "symptoms." Benjamin says he does "crazy stuff" that makes people think he is on drugs when he is not.
Mental illness is a crisis in this country. If a person does not have mental health problems prior to homelessness, they will develop mental illness. The longer someone is on the streets, the worse their mental and emotional health becomes.
If you're asking what does this have to do with you, as a taxpayer you pay huge money for each homeless person on the streets. You may not give to panhandlers but you are giving homeless people your money. On average, housing a homeless person saves $20,000 each homeless person each year. Multiply that by the number of homeless people and the yearly savings is in the billions of dollars. Savings of your tax dollars!

Housing homeless people saves lives and saves money!

    About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as UA-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.

I'm a firm believer that the longer you stay homeless, the more you will suffer from mental illness. We are in denial in this country about mental health conditions and how widespread the problem really is.

Kenneth White Unfortunately there are people that are kind and care, then there’s other who couldn’t care less.
People are getting more programmed to ignore others now adays..and the governments are no role models either.
It’s a dog eat dog world.
Obviously class has lot to do with it,or inherited wealth.
The others have to try,but living in a iron cage lifestyle is no bonus to start with.
I pray all theses people will eventually find some good fortune come their way.

That guy has facial meth sores...I'm sure smoking meth all day is much more likely to give you problems with mental illness than sleeping on the streets will. "Oh but if they didn't sleep on the streets they wouldn't smoke meth to escape the nightmare" Yeah sure, keep telling yourself that.

You may have a point there.Take the show Saturday Night Live for instance.A show we sit and watch and laugh at .What people don't realize Is that the majority of those actors and actresses have serious mental issues ,but we applaud them for It and even laugh at it.Think about It.If Jim Carey wasn't famous and was seen on the street doing half the shit he does on camera ,he'd be called insane. And when we tire of Saturday Night Live,we change the channel and what's on?The war In Iraq or another mass shooting.Plus the prospect of being potentially spied on by your phone,Computer and Govt.Throw rising cost of living, threat of foreclosure, eviction into that mix and youve got enough to drive anyone insane.

I can identify myself a bit with him, just with him, the other cases of homeless people in interviews are a good testimony shared, but i tell you for shure, there is nothing worse than ending up crazy with one of these these symptoms here:
      Schizophrenia
      Paranoia
      Illusions (auditory-visual, sensitive, smell)
And all of that mix it up with a bit of denutrition, cold, feeling weat, having your bones sticking to the flesh, and pain on the guts constantly, cocoraches and bugs going from here to there on your body while you sleep, to not feel secure while sleeping, to such a point were you have to lock your door.
In my case i have shelter, but i can self identify with him a bit by only sharing the madness symptoms and physical diseases that i have, this YT channel is great i guess.

Unfortunately homeless people get automatically labelled as druggies or addicts etc which just isn't the case.. Alot turn to drugs after being made homeless because it numbs physical and mental pain.. Can you imagine how cold and lonely it must be? They're self medicating alot of the time so they don't feel the cold or mental pain. They get attacked, spat on, abused on a daily basis.. It's just horrific
Talk about literally kicking someone when they're down. Have a heart and educate yourself if you think and judge people you know nothing about. Even people with 2 and 3jobs can't afford rent these days and are living in their cars etc. It's just not right. The cost of living doesn't match minimum wage.. How does anyone have a chance? Sending my love from Glasgow Scotland. 💙🙏My god he fought for the country. x❤️😢

He said he recycles and wear a himself out, so having a vehicle would probably improve his income and his sleep. We have millions of running vehicles in this country that are sent to scrap yards just because no one wants to buy them. Imagine if a charity had a dealer's license and could buy vehicles for just a few hundred dollars. The vehicles may not last, and they wouldn't need to in the right system of rotation.

The man's right about one thing: we are social creatures - we need other people. If all we have is our own voice in our head we will go crazy. That's why solitary confinement is our worse punishment. We don't, however, need to be around other crazy people. To be around the right kind of people we need to be like them ourselves. Listen to people. Don't look scary. Stay clean. Smile. Hear yourself when you speak. Imagine yourself in their place.

Did you not hear or maybe dont understand Benjamin's statement of being "stuck" Its not stuck as nowhere to turn for help, he states he knows there is help. "Stuck" with mental illness is a person cannot physically or mentally make themselves complete what seems like the smallest or logical task to a well minded person. Ben is broke so deep, you can feel it. Pray he can unstick himself enough to seek mental health care to begin the process of recovering. Unfortunately no one can do this for him and many even guided in the right direction cannot process in their minds how to accept. I cried for Ben. I am not even close to where he is in his mental state but i do know the "stuck" issue, ptsd and isolation. All we can do is hope, pray if you may for him

That's the thing, you pay huge money for each homeless person sleeping outside. Housing homeless people saves on average $20k per year per homeless person. Multiply that buy the number of homeless people and it's billions of dollars in savings each year.
Work hard - have a good life - save lives and save tax dollars - your tax dollars by housing people.

    • @InvisiblePeople
      @InvisiblePeople  5 років тому

Actually, Utah is not that the programs didn't work. The challenge was two things 1) we left the front door open. Because of the affordable housing crisis, more people are becoming homeless than we can help get out of homelessness. 2) the person that championed housing first in Utah retired. When that happened, other people took controll and everything went backward. Sadly, the higher you get to the top of homeless services the more egos there are.
Truth is housing homeless people does save lives and it saves money. Watch invisiblepeople.tv/housingfirst

*Dear Dad, If you ever see this I just want to say that I miss you and I love you so much. It’s hard to see you suffering and living off the streets like this, all I want is for you to find the motivation and strength within to get back into the treatment center. Most and foremost for your own benefits, but I can't deny that it also will make me happy for you to get some stability back into your life so we can get back to talking more frequently.*
*No one can take away from you how you’re the sweetest, funniest, caring and most loving person in the world I know and even though I know you will find it hard to believe; I’m not alone sharing these opinions and please just trust me when I say:*
*_You’ll always have my support no matter what and I’m told (by you know who) that you’ll get the financial support that's needed for medical bills etc. If only you’ll find the strength to motivate your self to get back into treatment and stay long enough for things to stabilize enough to get things in motion._*
*_I know how amazing you are and It’s so easy to see your strength and loving nature just by watching this video alone, but it's nonetheless heartbreaking to see how hard it is for you to survive and to be around and feel safe around other people to the extent that you stay away from the homeless shelters._*
*I can only try to imagine how much horrible things you've experienced in the wars you’ve fought and I wished there is something I could do to help you. I think about you every day and I wish there was a way for us to more frequently stay in contact, so we could talk and I could hear your voice, or at least you could read & write back my emails. Although this said, Please try not to think about things you should’ve or could've done, but focus more on what you can do from here and forward and take one step at a time.*
*I do ofc understand that everything I’ve said in re: treatment, is easier for me to say, than for you to do. Just know that no matter what; I'll always be your little girl and I’ll never stop loving you and I cherish every little memory and interaction we've had and I’ll always be here in the best of my ability.*
*I wish everyone (including your self) could see how sweet and kind you are and what you’ve done for our country. I miss you and can hardly wait for you to call me so I can your voice again. You are my hero, Dad!* 😘❤️

I guess this is how to make America great again. This is how the government thanks soldiers for their service ,what a sin

Yep. All those Republicans that say they care and love the troops but behind their backs cut their VA benefits and medical care.

Book Snake lol talk about generalizing. You know two veterans and you make blanket statements about everyone. Get a clue homelessness is at an all time high.

This dude chose to be homeless. He left his family and chose to give his stuff away to do drugs. I don’t see how that is the governments fault.

@@klwthe3rd Both Political sides are corrupt as hell and both are whores of the Federal Reserve and big Banks. While all these limp wristed cucks are bitching about things like race and toxic masculinity, they fail to notice what the real issues are...we are all being pit against one another so we don't notice what really is going on. The corruption on both sides of the political spectrum would make Jerry Springer faint. Sadly, the turd flinging between the liberals and the conservatives will continue until the human race goes extinct. The human race is insane because we never learn from the past and we keep doing the same thing but expect different results. Look at the politics of history from around the world... you'll notice some similarities.
