Los Angeles Homeless Man's Isolation Is Causing Mental Health Challenges

- Prior to my own homelessness, I had a great job in the television industry making sure the world received programs like Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy along with many other syndicated shows. Before that, I was a professional musician for 26 years making my living playing drums. When I was on the streets homeless and told this to people, do you think they believed me?
Benjamin is homeless on the streets of downtown Los Angeles. He shares a story that may be hard to believe but I believe him. It's how he talks with confidence remembering circumstances and dates, and as I said, my own story is hard to believe. There is no reason to believe he is telling anything but the truth. Plus, from experience, more often than not people are telling the truth. Yes, the mind may waver on some details. That happens to all of us. Now add the stress of living on the streets homeless. The mind plays tricks on people experiencing homelessness.
But it's not Benjamin's past that you need to pay attention too. It's what's happening to him now in the present. Benjamin says that homelessness is starting to get to him. The isolation of being on the streets and not having tangible social interactions with other humans is causing him to have in his words "symptoms." Benjamin says he does "crazy stuff" that makes people think he is on drugs when he is not.
Mental illness is a crisis in this country. If a person does not have mental health problems prior to homelessness, they will develop mental illness. The longer someone is on the streets, the worse their mental and emotional health becomes.
If you're asking what does this have to do with you, as a taxpayer you pay huge money for each homeless person on the streets. You may not give to panhandlers but you are giving homeless people your money. On average, housing a homeless person saves $20,000 each homeless person each year. Multiply that by the number of homeless people and the yearly savings is in the billions of dollars. Savings of your tax dollars!

About Invisible People:
Since its launch in November 2008, Invisible People has leveraged the power of video and the massive reach of social media to share the compelling, gritty, and unfiltered stories of homeless people from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C. The vlog (video blog) gets up close and personal with veterans, mothers, children, layoff victims and others who have been forced onto the streets by a variety of circumstances. Each week, they’re on InvisiblePeople.tv, and high traffic sites such as UA-cam, Twitter and Facebook, proving to a global audience that while they may often be ignored, they are far from invisible.
Invisible People goes beyond the rhetoric, statistics, political debates, and limitations of social services to examine poverty in America via a medium that audiences of all ages can understand, and can’t ignore. The vlog puts into context one of our nation’s most troubling and prevalent issues through personal stories captured by the lens of Mark Horvath - its founder - and brings into focus the pain, hardship and hopelessness that millions face each day. One story at a time, videos posted on InvisiblePeople.tv shatter the stereotypes of America’s homeless, force shifts in perception and deliver a call to action that is being answered by national brands, nonprofit organizations and everyday citizens now committed to opening their eyes and their hearts to those too often forgotten.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to changing the way we think about people experiencing homelessness.
I'm a firm believer that the longer you stay homeless, the more you will suffer from mental illness. We are in denial in this country about mental health conditions and how widespread the problem really is.
Yes but it sounds like this guy had mental issues before becoming homeless.God bless em.
Kenneth White Unfortunately there are people that are kind and care, then there’s other who couldn’t care less.
People are getting more programmed to ignore others now adays..and the governments are no role models either.
It’s a dog eat dog world.
Obviously class has lot to do with it,or inherited wealth.
The others have to try,but living in a iron cage lifestyle is no bonus to start with.
I pray all theses people will eventually find some good fortune come their way.
That guy has facial meth sores...I'm sure smoking meth all day is much more likely to give you problems with mental illness than sleeping on the streets will. "Oh but if they didn't sleep on the streets they wouldn't smoke meth to escape the nightmare" Yeah sure, keep telling yourself that.
You may have a point there.Take the show Saturday Night Live for instance.A show we sit and watch and laugh at .What people don't realize Is that the majority of those actors and actresses have serious mental issues ,but we applaud them for It and even laugh at it.Think about It.If Jim Carey wasn't famous and was seen on the street doing half the shit he does on camera ,he'd be called insane. And when we tire of Saturday Night Live,we change the channel and what's on?The war In Iraq or another mass shooting.Plus the prospect of being potentially spied on by your phone,Computer and Govt.Throw rising cost of living, threat of foreclosure, eviction into that mix and youve got enough to drive anyone insane.
@ CatMother. You could give this man a nice shiny new Mansion, and he would find a way to sell it for a few bags of Meth and be back on the streets within a year.

Benjamin is an intelligent, educated and well spoken man. I wish him all the best and will pray for positive changes in his life.
He is honest that he has issues and problematic behaviors -- but he is blaming himself a lot. I bet the isolation and chronic loneliness began long before he became homeless.
Homeless people don't need our prayers. They need REAL HELP.
@@RedEyeificationthe government should make houses for the homeless people
"People think I'm high and I'm not" that was pretty sad man
I can identify myself a bit with him, just with him, the other cases of homeless people in interviews are a good testimony shared, but i tell you for shure, there is nothing worse than ending up crazy with one of these these symptoms here:
Schizophrenia
Paranoia
Illusions (auditory-visual, sensitive, smell)
And all of that mix it up with a bit of denutrition, cold, feeling weat, having your bones sticking to the flesh, and pain on the guts constantly, cocoraches and bugs going from here to there on your body while you sleep, to not feel secure while sleeping, to such a point were you have to lock your door.
In my case i have shelter, but i can self identify with him a bit by only sharing the madness symptoms and physical diseases that i have, this YT channel is great i guess.
probably was high... addicts are master manipulators. It's not hard to tell if someone has or has had drug or alcohol problems.
So many people assume this of all homeless people. Anything but taking the time to understand them.
@@rickyism1576 Why can't you take the guy's word that he doesn't do drugs and he just has fucked mental problems? Why? That's just so cynical to do, especially when he served your fucking country.
Unfortunately homeless people get automatically labelled as druggies or addicts etc which just isn't the case.. Alot turn to drugs after being made homeless because it numbs physical and mental pain.. Can you imagine how cold and lonely it must be? They're self medicating alot of the time so they don't feel the cold or mental pain. They get attacked, spat on, abused on a daily basis.. It's just horrific
Talk about literally kicking someone when they're down. Have a heart and educate yourself if you think and judge people you know nothing about. Even people with 2 and 3jobs can't afford rent these days and are living in their cars etc. It's just not right. The cost of living doesn't match minimum wage.. How does anyone have a chance? Sending my love from Glasgow Scotland. 💙🙏My god he fought for the country. x❤️😢
“Lack of social stimulation”. Man that hit me hard
Nice to know I'm not the only one. The whole thing got to me tbh. Sad
How can you have social stimulation when everyone around you let you down?
I got out of years of social isolation and culture shock and have a much more thriving social life now, but I still have all these subtle issues and symptoms from those times that always seem to catch me off guard. It's damaging
People don't reach out to others or "socialize" for pride and fear. Takes some vulnerability tbh so it's a tough position for people that want to protect themselves.
Me too
I know how it feels isolation is the worst companion ever...
OMG🤣😂😂😥😔
So true bro
Masterr Laster been living in my car a yr and half and when not at work im in total isolation. I prefer the isolation.
It depends on your perspective honestly I like to be alone and not around people it gets tiring when I’m around people solace is the answer
I remember living in my car for months with no one to talk to cause I was embarrassed to be in that situation, I started losing my sanity and living in fantasies. It’s been 6 years since I was last homeless, I make 60,000 a year and live in an apartment but still continue to live in fantasies. Don’t feel like anybody around me can even relate and I’m only 29.

I got the feeling that this was one of the more honest yet most depressing interviews. He must feel used and abused by the leaders of our country. No veteran should have to live this way. Served twice? And this is what he has to show for it? I can only imagine the stories he has to tell. He seemed to open up to you. I hope after you ended the video, you stayed and talked with him for a while. Sometimes a listening ear is more valuable than money. God bless him. We’re so disconnected from the homeless that we don’t even know how to talk about them. Most of us have some great, admirable qualities, especially in humbling situations
😊
Has he applied for disability? He clearly paid taxes. He is clearly unable to work. He deserves at least a monthly SSDI check. It sounds like a pickup or a van would change his life. He said he recycles and wear a himself out, so having a vehicle would probably improve his income and his sleep. We have millions of running vehicles in this country that are sent to scrap yards just because no one wants to buy them. Imagine if a charity had a dealer's license and could buy vehicles for just a few hundred dollars. The vehicles may not last, and they wouldn't need to in the right system of rotation.
@@PhoenixProdLLC I was kinda thinking that, too. I think a non profit could survive trading labor for bare-essential vehicles.
I'm looking for a clunker too to get myself back on my feet. Know of any or a place where I can find one?
Its not that easy. When you have a vehicle, lets say someone gives it to him for free, he still has to pay for his gas, insurance, titles, the stickers, and being homeless, he cant provide that much money for just a vehicle, ya know?
@Camel AmongSheep you're exactly right, the people who don't agree with you, haven't been through the red tape, and the profiling that you have to go through all of the people holding out on the government services. Because you don't fit what they think you should look like

The man's right about one thing: we are social creatures - we need other people. If all we have is our own voice in our head we will go crazy. That's why solitary confinement is our worse punishment. We don't, however, need to be around other crazy people. To be around the right kind of people we need to be like them ourselves. Listen to people. Don't look scary. Stay clean. Smile. Hear yourself when you speak. Imagine yourself in their place.
Please don't speak for everyone, as someone with social anxiety disorder I can tell you that being alone is healthier for me, I feel relaxed when alone and anxious when around others, socialising raises my blood pressure. My uncle has for the the most part been a loner fisherman for over 35 years and he hasn't got insane.

Did you not hear or maybe dont understand Benjamin's statement of being "stuck" Its not stuck as nowhere to turn for help, he states he knows there is help. "Stuck" with mental illness is a person cannot physically or mentally make themselves complete what seems like the smallest or logical task to a well minded person. Ben is broke so deep, you can feel it. Pray he can unstick himself enough to seek mental health care to begin the process of recovering. Unfortunately no one can do this for him and many even guided in the right direction cannot process in their minds how to accept. I cried for Ben. I am not even close to where he is in his mental state but i do know the "stuck" issue, ptsd and isolation. All we can do is hope, pray if you may for him

That's the thing, you pay huge money for each homeless person sleeping outside. Housing homeless people saves on average $20k per year per homeless person. Multiply that buy the number of homeless people and it's billions of dollars in savings each year.
Work hard - have a good life - save lives and save tax dollars - your tax dollars by housing people.
Actually, Utah is not that the programs didn't work. The challenge was two things 1) we left the front door open. Because of the affordable housing crisis, more people are becoming homeless than we can help get out of homelessness. 2) the person that championed housing first in Utah retired. When that happened, other people took controll and everything went backward. Sadly, the higher you get to the top of homeless services the more egos there are.
Truth is housing homeless people does save lives and it saves money. Watch invisiblepeople.tv/housingfirst

He clearly hasn’t been talked to in a while, so his words were choppy in the beginning, typical of depression-isolation, but became gorgeously articulate, especially towards the end when he talked about his service (“I fought for nothing just like my father”) and his deep single longing of wanting to help others, and ending with genuine happiness and satisfaction for just the sight of his daughter living a better life than him? Holy wow.
Almost everybody's answers for the three wishes always gets me. This guy is living on the streets, knows he needs help but his own actions are preventing him from getting better, yet one of his wishes is so that HE could be able to help OTHERS, and not the other way around.
For the first time in my life, I am homeless at 54...30 year job, normal life, but am feeling that isolation...not good. It's a test to the human spirit. You can take more than you think, and have the capacity for compassion and mercy.
Look forward to His kingdom to come.
I wish I could tell him he made my day today. God bless him.
You’ve touched my life, just listening to you. God bless you brother.
I wish I could sit with this man and let him “ramble” for as long as he wanted. Sometimes we just need someone to ramble too. Bless you sir.
Here's some more of his rambling. ua-cam.com/video/X7ycWdu7wHo/v-deo.html
This man touches me...I believe he is the saddest man you have ever interviewed!! My heart goes out to him. May God Bless him. 🙁❤🙏 Love&Hugs
God bless u .❤amen 🙏
After watching these videos I always Thank God for my life. Things can always get worse. I Thank God that I never started doing drugs or alcohol. A person can stop doing drugs after many years but I feel like thats the exception to the rule. Don’t start then you’ll never have to stop. That being said, I hope Benjamin becomes an exception to the rule, a miracle just like Mark! 💜
I wish I could give you a hug! Thanks Soo much for what you have done! Crying God feel you too! For some reason if all videos this one has touched me the most;!
These videos have really opened my eyes, my mind AND my heart.
Wow what a sweet man, thank you for sharing 💗💗
God Bless this man🙏....
Thank you for allowing these people to express themselves with their voice. I hope they all find their true path.
Wow this guy touched my heart and brought me to tears. This video is 2 years old and I hope with his deep honesty and huge heart that he realized his wish and found a home and a happier future 💖
He wanted to continue talking, but you cut him off. Why?
He does this with everyone that becomes too deep.
I noticd most his videos are 10 minute limit
I think he just stops recording and redirects the conversation. Everyone has a sense of pride no matter how far down the ladder are. No one wants a video of themselves breaking down and blubbering while they are at their lowest point. I think he doesn't record it so the person can maintain some dignity in their own mind. There is nothing wrong with breaking down and crying but no one wants a video of themselves like that floating around.
I also believe he doesn't want to go to far and end up exploiting or demeaning anyone. Its just my personal opinion so I could be completely wrong.
Because he got his content now he's onto the next
@@kermitkid1 exactly ! He just wants to milk their misery...make poverty porn & move on
For all that content he offers them a pair of old socks
God bless this man. Hope his life is taking a positive turn
Your videos always remind me to never to take life for granted
I pray that this man has found peace in his life today🙏🏻❤️. No one should have to live like this especially someone who has served his country😞
Go to Thailand or Taiwan to have a job as a language teacher and a girl friend.
He will have a decent life there with respect from local people.
I truly wish he can recover from deep depression and can ride Kawasaki motorbike.
You do need a celta and degree now. But China will take u on with no celta.
Absolutely. Trying to find a meaningful life in los Angeles just seems counterintuitive. But I guess the likelihood of finding someone who can help you there is higher.
Can't help but think this is where I will be in a few weeks.
I know what it means to go 'crazy' from isolation. I've been 'socially distanced' for years now.
Smart dude. Self aware and a giving beautiful soul. I wish him all the best for help and a brighter future. 🙏♥️
There was such sadness and light within this man that is indescribable. His sincerity into giving was palatable. Really hope he made it to his daughter and found a community he feels safe with.
You can learn more things from people like him than school books, from television or rich people...this world is going to self-destruction, and the only way to change this reality is to take a few steps back to hope for a better and different future.
Hey Benjamin! You're a SUCCESS! You got a kid that loves you! That's the most important! Keep fighting, man! I hope you get out of the situation!
this man is so beautiful. i hope hes doing well now
You got my support dude I don't pray but I'll send my vibrations for sure.
Hope you get up,keep fighting💕💕💕
I guess this is how to make America great again. This is how the government thanks soldiers for their service ,what a sin
Yep. All those Republicans that say they care and love the troops but behind their backs cut their VA benefits and medical care.
Book Snake lol talk about generalizing. You know two veterans and you make blanket statements about everyone. Get a clue homelessness is at an all time high.
This dude chose to be homeless. He left his family and chose to give his stuff away to do drugs. I don’t see how that is the governments fault.
@@klwthe3rd Both Political sides are corrupt as hell and both are whores of the Federal Reserve and big Banks. While all these limp wristed cucks are bitching about things like race and toxic masculinity, they fail to notice what the real issues are...we are all being pit against one another so we don't notice what really is going on. The corruption on both sides of the political spectrum would make Jerry Springer faint. Sadly, the turd flinging between the liberals and the conservatives will continue until the human race goes extinct. The human race is insane because we never learn from the past and we keep doing the same thing but expect different results. Look at the politics of history from around the world... you'll notice some similarities.
Aurelia Astrea 💖
He seems like such a nice and very caring guy. I pray for his future and i hope he landed on his feet and is staying in contact with his daughter. God Bless Him. 🙏🙏🙏
Damm this one got me his eyes when he speaks on war and his declining mental state just stare right through you and the camera, it's so powerful. Thank you for doing what you do its given me a different perspective and helped me realize my own biases and prejudices.
