Just last week I was thinking of doing this! But noticed as I unzippered all the wires and didn't know what to do so I decided not to. Looked around for some videos and couldn't find any, then you make one! Woohoo! Thanks!
It was genius to let the people see the finished product and the walk-around first and then show the process, so thank you for that. As soon as my shit starts fading I'm doing this to my JKU!!!!!
I like it. I bought my Jeep used and the soccer mom that owned it before me had a huge horse of a dog that chewed up the rear passenger side padding. I peeled the padding back and seen the wires and green primer. Then had a spiced rum and never did any thing else about it. LoL. Completely doing this to mine this weekend. Thanks for the video.
Liked and subbed solely on the walk around you did BEFORE the video so we didn't have to watch the whole thing. Good on you for thinking about the viewer. Great channel!
I was thinking about taking off the roll bar padding, and your video was the only one wich shows how to do it and how does it look like at the end. Very helpful video, I'll try to do the same with my jeep. Thank you man. Greetings from a little town in Mexico.
Dude thank you! I’ve been wantin to do this but was uncertain on how it looks. Now that I know, I have a weekend project. Can’t wait to see how it turns out.
I live in a colder climate so I’ll be running a top most of the year but even so I think I’ll be doing this myself to give the interior a pop of color. Thank you for the video!
I just did this an half hour before I watched this video! Thanks for telling me what to do with the wires on the passenger side buddy! I think it looks much better on yours and on my white white 2 door. You’re the man! I was just wondering what to do with those wires. Thanks for this great video. Love this channel!
Great summer project, already removed front padding when I install my rockhard sports cage. Always wondered how the rest might look. You are so humble in your videos. Real! That’s why I keep watching. Keep up the good work . Thanks.
That looks awesome!! I’ve also heard everyone say not to do it because it looks bad.. thanks again for the videos you make, you keep it real and honestly not many youtubers do that
Excellent video, thanks for sharing. I’ve always wondered about doing this. I’ll agree that showing the final product first was a huge help and made me want to watch the whole video even more. Thanks again.
Hey man your Jeep came out looking awesome, so congrats on this cool project! Also, I like the order of how you presented the results with the finished look, and then explaining how you did it. I was looking forward to doing this project on my JK, and your video really got me motivated to do it soon. Thanks ! #Jeepwave 🖐😎
I so am tired of those pads looking dirty and I want easier clean up after the trail. Also, I prefer the look when the top is off. I did this in my YK a few decades ago, but did not know what to expect with JK. Thanks for the excellent video! I going to pull those pads off this weekend!
Seriously thinking about doing this. My dog chewed part of my roll bar cover and this would be way cheaper than replacing the cover which I don't really like anyway. As for the rear roll bar light. I never use it so I might just remove it entirely and tie off the ends somewhere they cannot be seen. Thank you for the vid. Great video!
Hey Man, Awsome Video - So Smart to show is the End Result First ! Very much appreciate that you thought that through - wish more guys thought of that - spend one minute at the Front of the video showing us what we will get After we do the Mod . Smart as Hell you are ! I’m super glad you took the time to do this video- I myself Really like the look of the ‘naked roll bars’ - could never have envisioned what they look like w/o all that padding crap on them w/o your thoughtful video. I’m excited to do mine now and I will throw all that padding crap out in the trash and i’ll likely just ditch the rear dome light as well, don’t think I’ll miss it and the Jeep will look cleaner w/o it. ( i’ll prob not snip the wires though and just roll them up & tuck them away in case it turns out I just want to mount a nice little bright LED flood light up there if I find I’m wanting more illumination in the rear of the Jeep at night. Great Video Man ! Love your slow easy pace and you are conscious of your camera angles so we can see Everything you are taking about - Nice Job -Much Thanks 👍🏼
Keep making videos. Yours are the best on YT in my opinion. I really enjoy the whole I’ll show you final product first then explain and show the how to. But I would watch that part regardless just to educate myself. You have nice camera and mic set up.
I know this is an older video but I am about to do this to my 2010 Willy's JKU. I will post pics to the Facebook site once complete. Thank you for such a good detailed video.
Love this idea. Gonna look into doing it myself. Might try to 3D print a new dome light that will curve to the role cage. If it works out I can try to send you one.
The cross member on the very back has a couple of threaded holes on the “inside” I’ve found those holes to be the perfect place to mount a 3” cube LED pointed into the cargo area!
Thanks for a great video. I had already removed my really ugly covers and the padding basically crumbled. I had wondered what to do with the wires, your solution is genius. I had my 2007 JK rhino-lined so may have them do the bars also. Thanks again for the great video.
I was thinking of doing this but get a led peal and stick light strip to go across to replace the dome light. It would be brighter, low profile, led and com would be needed a on off switch if I just want the rear on.
I’m glad you did this video man!! I’ve always wanted to remove the padding to see how it would look like. I’ll do this project soon for a fact. Thank you and good video 👍🏻
Took mine off today. Looks much better. Considering having my roll bar painted black or red. Not sure yet. I've also stripped out nearly all the plastic crap from the inside of my Jeep as well, and the carpeting.
I was gonna do this but rerouting the wire and covering it was going to be a pain so I just read dyed my roll bar colors black and it looks perfect just like from the factory
Thanks for the video. Just add some things I did . The rear cross bar unbolts and it makes it easy to run the wires through the rollbar. So you don't need to see any wires. I had to drill one small hole. Also I had a led licence plate light i didn't like. So I used that for my dome light in back. I
Looks good Ben! Hey FYI I think rock hard make some kind of bracket for that rear dome light. I took my rear done light and moved it up front because it’s so much brighter, I also swapped the bulbs for led. I was using google trying to find another rear dome light so I could put it back in and remember seeing the bracket. I didn’t really know what it was for but now it makes perfect sense.
I know this video is dated, but is there still no aftermarket support for a replacement light that will be more seamless yet match the stock function of the rear doom light? Seems like an easy product to sell if someone made something.
It looks great! More purpose built look to it for sure. I think your alien would agree... I'm installing a Poison Spyder sport cage (currently out for powdercoat) and I think I am going to do this to the rest of my cage. Hopefully it will have the same appearance in my 2dr.

@@JKGearandGadgets you could always just mount a switch on the bar! That way your passengers still get the switch feature. You would get a lot of light output out of those KC Cyclones
Thanks for the vid...i love romping topless and looking for ways to make clean up easier. I hate cleaning those pads and they never get clean anyways. I doing this ASAP! Thanks for the paint and wiring tips!
I just bought a 2012 with the padding already taken off. The previous owner didn't address any of the wiring, etc., so I'll be working on that soon. Thanks for the video.
hey Bud just had to message and let ya know i learned some stuff these past few weekends airing down is now in my plan did some wicked trails out here in arizona recently and found that airing down did make a difference in the trip!!! also never liked using a spotter til last trip always thought that if something bad happened i didnt want anyone to blame however a spotter can keep those BAD things from happening as well!!!
For all wondering. Baja Designs make a led dome light with a switch that’s the size of a rock light. Splice from the existing wiring and boom, you all set.
Looks really good. I'd do something like that but I have hit the side bar before. My head just about touches the roof inside. Didn't feel good with the padding.
I’m interested in hearing how tall you are as well haha. I tried bouncing around and I don’t think I will hit. Might get some cheap red padding from JEGS just in case
6’ 2” But I’m a mutant and have a longer torso and shorter legs. Father was 6’ 4”. Guess moms genes shortened my legs. Got a good bounce when tilted sideways and hit the driver side.
I did this to my jku along with removing all the windshield plastic parts. I like archaic look. Funny enough my driver side foam was cracked. 35s with 2.5 lift and I still smack my head getting in!
I did this randomly in a deep cleanse of my jeep and garage. Luckily it's all pained. However I LOATHE my handles to get in, they are Jeep oem wrap around roll bars. Alternatives?

Hey just an idea for that back light when I cut it right there at the roll bar meets the cross piece and just use A waterproof light strip going across the Whole cross piece
You may try to take the flex tubes off the wires and color match paint them fully as well so it will blend fully in with the roll bar to hide them better however I personally love how the black contrasts with the the red I think it gives it a lot more character and a lot meaner look to it
Hello I know this is an old video, but like yourself have been thinking of doing this for quite sometime now, the dome light in the back can you just completely take that off or do some of the wires that go to that go to other things?
Rear passenger side roll bar bend was not sprayed with enough red. Besides that.. great diy video. Thanks. Hope you touch up the paint and make it all even. I would have personally gone for a slightly darker red for the roll bar though.
Just a thought u know its more work but could you not have unbolted the rear cross member on cage and run the wires through the tube for a cleaner look? Just a question looks good man im doing this to my jeep this year in the summer

Just curious you say the alien sun shade needs to be adjusted slightly to fit since the smaller diameter. Doe this affect the fit of a soft? I notice you just run the bars only. I still want to be able to have the soft top work properly but have the look you achieve when the top is down or removed.
JK Gear and Gadgets just an FYI I decided to go for it and it turns out the soft top is not affected at all by removing the padding. I absolutely love it.

If you pull the bungee out of the ball a little ways you can tie the knot there and trim off the excess. Will give a cleaner look
I do that once a year

I know this is an older video but I am about to do this to my 2010 Willy's JKU. I will post pics to the Facebook site once complete. Thank you for such a good detailed video.
Just added the post to your Facebook page.

RGB light strip to replace dome light, looks great. Love the channel
Thank you!! As for the dome light, I want to keep the push to turn on feature
Great idea showing end result first. I love a guy who uses his head. All I have to say is I thought Alaska was cold!!!
Thanks for showing the final product first!
Pretty slick bud! Great video as usual. May end up trying this mod out myself this summer. Cheers
Thanks for a great video. I had already removed my really ugly covers and the padding basically crumbled. I had wondered what to do with the wires, your solution is genius. I had my 2007 JK rhino-lined so may have them do the bars also. Thanks again for the great video.
Thanks for watching 🤘
I love it. I hate my faded cover. I'm going to do this. New subscriber here. Thanks for the content.

Love it man! 🤣

I'm on the same mission! What plastic stuff did you remove from the interior? I got my carpet and padding out, so I'm looking for more.
I have a white 2dr JK. I removed my padding and I think it looks awesome. Gives it a little retro CJ look.
I was gonna do this but rerouting the wire and covering it was going to be a pain so I just read dyed my roll bar colors black and it looks perfect just like from the factory
That turned out really great.... I'll be doing that very soon.
Looks like I have a mod for this weekend. The beer will be more expensive than the mod 👍
Thanks for the video. Just add some things I did . The rear cross bar unbolts and it makes it easy to run the wires through the rollbar. So you don't need to see any wires. I had to drill one small hole. Also I had a led licence plate light i didn't like. So I used that for my dome light in back. I
nice good to know thanks!
I am totally doing this to my 2012 2 door JK.
thanks for the research and great video!

I’ll check it out! Thanks for letting me know
I took off the rollcage cover and padding a while back, it looks way better in my opinion. Gives the jeep a custom look
Looks great thanks for the video showing everything now I’m definitely going to do mine!
Thanks for watching!
That looks wicked. I'm doing mine in the spring. Good video, great tips
I love it. I'm about to try this. Looks really good. Not much involved either. Definitely a easy mod. Has a cleaner look.
I know this video is dated, but is there still no aftermarket support for a replacement light that will be more seamless yet match the stock function of the rear doom light? Seems like an easy product to sell if someone made something.
Yes. Baja Designs has a dome light with a switch. Looks like a rock light

just use Rock lights on each side of bars and take out center light
Thought of that!! But I don’t want to lose the push to turn on feature since that is super convenient for back seat riders
I had thought the same thing or just delete altogether or put lighting under the seats.

Are all the wires going to the back light just for the light? Can I get rid of all of them?
I might give this a go this weekend while I’m off
Thanks for the vid...i love romping topless and looking for ways to make clean up easier. I hate cleaning those pads and they never get clean anyways. I doing this ASAP! Thanks for the paint and wiring tips!

Thank you for watching! And goodluck with the project, it looks really nice once its all wrapped up!
My JK was black, the covers did not stand out..... but looks good on red. I kept mine in the garage with no doors and top down to drive on nice days.
True haha, not noticeable on a Black jeep
Just found my weekend project, thanks for the very informative video.
hey Bud
just had to message and let ya know
i learned some stuff these past few weekends

That actually looks amazing, good work
Thanks for the video, inspired me to do this to my Jeep today, came up great.
Damn that came out nice! I might do that to mine because I've always thought that big fat padding looked kinda stupid.
Definitely doing this!!! Maybe doing this at the same time as bedlining the interior?!
That would probably be a great idea if your doing that already! Hmmmm wonder what it would look like if you Bedlined the roll bar...
JK Gear and Gadgets my buddy bedlined his roll bar cage and it looks great!
JK Gear and Gadgets that's a great idea!! Also thinking about updating the cargo light to a led strip light.
Looks good. Thinking about doing it myself
If you have a 2 door you don't have to worry about that light. Definitely going to do this.
I did this to my jku along with removing all the windshield plastic parts. I like archaic look. Funny enough my driver side foam was cracked. 35s with 2.5 lift and I still smack my head getting in!
Saw this video and now I definitely plan on doing this mod
I did this randomly in a deep cleanse of my jeep and garage. Luckily it's all pained. However I LOATHE my handles to get in, they are Jeep oem wrap around roll bars. Alternatives?
As always great video.
Thank you very much for the info
That will be my next project.
Is there a way to unplug the entire wire harness for the back dome light? I never use it and don't want it. Would prefer to unplug the whole harness than to snippy snippy the wires
Ive seen a few jku with it off ive never seen a old jeep with any padding ever.
Hmmm...looks good. Thinkin’ about doin’ that to mine in the summer. Good video.
Hey just an idea for that back light when I cut it right there at the roll bar meets the cross piece and just use A waterproof light strip going across the Whole cross piece
What kind of clear coat did you use?
That looks really good, I will do this next summer
Are the toll bars chambered or just straight shot hollow? I would rather just add a port hole and fish my wires in and out where needed.
Would also look good with a uv stable rattle can bedliner
It would! Is normal Bedliner not UV resistant?
Where did you get the spray paint for the Jeep. Mine is a jku fire cracker red also. Interested in painting the bar also
Just a thought u know its more work but could you not have unbolted the rear cross member on cage and run the wires through the tube for a cleaner look? Just a question looks good man im doing this to my jeep this year in the summer
I’m sure you could! I might try to do that next time I have the top off
hi my row bars are black and i am going to that red you have now should i sand they black or can i just put a primer first then shoot they red on it thank you
Lightly scuff, prime, paint
after putting my soft top on this year. Reallly debating this or new roll bar covers.
if you find decent roll bar covers, please reply here. All of the reviews for everything I've found are horrendously bad.
Ok, how did you fold your rear head rest back with seats up???
I bet the roll bar would look great painted black!
I know this video is old but hoping you will see this... I am actually wanting the opposite. I have a 2018 JL sport (2door) which does not have the padding/covers on the roll bar and I can't find anyone who makes padding for the JL.... I was wondering if you think the covers from the JK will fit the JL?
I have a 2017 Wrangler..white. I took off my padding, and the back roll bar looks like they didn’t finish painting it. Looks almost gray..and another looks like white with black flakes.
Ever thought of of just removing the dome light and installing a waterproof LED light directly to the cross bar? Like a thin, low profile LED
Love it man, doing this next. I just dont get why Jeep didnt finish the paint
Looks good. I did mine and the paint did not stick well. I had to go back and scuff the whole thing. I drive a JK though. Also it works good for sunshade but my bikini top is not fitting as well.
Just wondering if removing the padding and material if you have noticed any sound difference with the top on ?
Awesome vid. Thanks for the final product at the beginning! you ever think about taking that back dome light off and putting just a light back without the whole housing?
Just curious.. how did the roll bar hold up to the canoe on top? Did it scratch it up bad?
The sunshade seemed to prevent scratching, but the canoe did kinda chafe the sunshade. Next time I will wrap rags around it to prevent thag
Is that firecracker red?
Is it possible to replace the foam if you decide to go back to having padding?
Just curious you say the alien sun shade needs to be adjusted slightly to fit since the smaller diameter. Doe this affect the fit of a soft? I notice you just run the bars only. I still want to be able to have the soft top work properly but have the look you achieve when the top is down or removed.
I’m not too familiar with the soft tops. Does the mounts/Tracks mount on the roll bar or the padding?
JK Gear and Gadgets just an FYI I decided to go for it and it turns out the soft top is not affected at all by removing the padding. I absolutely love it.
Brandon McLaren awesome!! Thanks for the update!
I bet if the tube doors were painted to match that would look pretty cool, just an idea I had
I thought that too! But then I photoshopped it and honestly it was too much red haha.
That wire cover is called split loom
Haha I have huge Brain farts while making these videos 😂
