DCS: A-10C II Tank Killer - Laser Guided Rockets

- In this DCS: A-10C II Tank Killer video, we’ll look at the Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System, or APKWS laser-guided rocket. The APKWS consists of either M151 or M282 2.75-inch rocket mated with a laser guidance kit.
Based on a laser- designation from your targeting pod our an offboard laser-designation source, the APKWS, also referred to as the AGR-20A, can have pinpoint accuracy on targets out to around 5 miles.
The M151 version has a high explosive warhead and the M282 version has a penetrator warhead. Both versions are ideal against unarmored and lightly armored targets. However, the AGR-20A is not designed to defeat tank armor.
Seven APKWS rockets are carried in each LAU-131 rocket pod.

The new A-10 cockpit looks awesome. I was watching some real footage of the GAU in action and noticed it shook the bloody hell out of the plane.

Nice showcase of the FM, and the weapon! I do hope, Wags, down that development road, we see more realistic explosions, and also more realistic behavior from AI infantry and vehicles, who, after seeing a team mate take one, take a leaf out of the Lord Denethor book of responses to terror, and "flee for their lives." That being said, this a/c and the new systems have come together quite pleasingly...
As much as i can understant that there is much more important things to come up first, i also cannot agree more with what you've mentioned here, actually had these same thoughts in my mind for quite a while ! I'm loving whatever ED brings to us as every update is very welcomed ! Hopefully they find the time someday to polish little things like these ;)

Imagine having a couple different buddies lazing different targets in a single area..... then one A-10 loaded with APKWS rockets yeets itself over the hill, spamming all the rockets all with a different laser code......
Devastating. Then it turns out that we usually don't have up to 7 guys lasing at the same time for even a single pod of APKWS.......
@@tommyq4654 An extremely high-priority target cluster might have a drone or two orbiting above it working with a ground recon team or armored vehicle platoon painting multiple targets with multiple lasers, but yeah, that's not going to be most targets.

ive buyed it at the autumn sale and I can not believe it that im able to shoot so many laser guided Hydras at the enemy. Normally they are stupid dumbfire rockets but now they are soooo good.

why waste time on something that is completely useless? ECM is not modeled
Weight and balance, aswell as drag is still different compared to the short version.
Also irl if there is an A-10 equipped with an ALQ-184 it is 90% of the time the long version.

Its certainly given the 2.75inch rocket a new lease of life, and firing the HE version at a single person/group of individuals seems to make more sense than a hellfire or even a gau burst
Interesting that you can change the rocket's laser code inside the cockpit. This isn't the case on other aircraft, they're set on the rocket itself only.

I noticed that they just included again the rope that goes behind the UFC, does it have any function depending on the paint one chooses or is it simply aesthetic? (in the first video of the A10C II that rope was not there)
It is/was used to secure lose items in the cockpit, but it seems like today it is more common to use a pair of flight bags that is placed on top of the dashboard.
Any chance to see some flightbags on the dashboard, Wags?

I've noticed that multiple rockets can be fired at the target and all will follow the reflected laser beam and hit the same target, which is good against bunkers or another structures. I don't know why isn't it possible with Frogfoot and Vikhr missiles, since they work basicly the same.

Hi, thanks for the video. Is autolasing possible with the new munitions? BTW, the time to impact seems way off, it estimates 12s but actually takes 28s for the rocket to reach the target.
When will the A-10C II be released? Imma buy that immediately. I'm a current owner of the A-10C and can't wait for an upgrade.

In real life the laser code can only be changed on the rocket. Was the ability to change the laser code in the cockpit done for flexibility or is a newer version of the APKWS that can change the code from the cockpit IRL?
Gameplay reasons I believe..
Technically the LGB bombs (-12, -16, -24) can’t be changed on the fly either but because JTAC at the moment can’t change laser codes, they let us change it in the air for that reason.
Yeah all the fusing, laser codes, and other things that physically have to be changed on munitions are done in the dsms inv pages in dcs.
Phoenix591 currently the F-16 GBU-12/10 codes can only be changed in the ME
Hi Matt, considering the fact that we’re getting APKWS for Warthog II does that mean it’ll be coming to other modules that support Hydra rockets? I know that the USMC have trained, and are rated for, using APKWS on their Hornets.

Since I'm not the taxpayer it won't completely replace my Mavericks, but 21 on one station... thats going to be pretty effective against the Zeus if nothing else.

So let me get this straight, if you come up on an enemy encampment full of vehicles and soft targets, spend some time in the TGP setting up a ton of markpoints. Could you go to the first target, fire off like 8 rockets with a good interval between (7 seconds?), then as soon as the first rocket hits you select markpoint 2, designate, the laser moves to that target and the rocket hits that one, markpoint 3, designate...and so on and so forth?
@@PatrickRatman 100% I was only imagining trying something like this on a very densely packed vehicle target rich area where you may have a ton of enemies very close together within say 100ft, more or less on a horizontal or linear plane..hmmmmm
My A10C and C2 Tank Killer does not have the APKWS Rockets as an option. Is this an extra mod?

I'm having lots of fun with the new laser rockets, HMCS, and new turn ability. One issue, in a "gimbal roll" situation with the original Hawg, I would do a "China Hat Aft Short" to recenter the gimbal. Now that switches the tgt pod to "Laser Search". Outside of switching the tgt pod to "standby" then back to "A2G", is there a quick way to reset
ecenter\unroll the gimbal?
Also, I was flying the "Hard Quickstart" in VR and it starts you at dusk. As the light fades outside, my right eyeball begins to see the cockpit with a green "night vision" glow while my left eye does not. This causes discomfort at first, followed by pain as it gets darker out. It is terrible! I've noticed that fires on enemy planes have different intensities between eyes in VR and other general issues between eyes with lighting and effects. The clouds in VR are terrible. They have little blobs that roll with your head when close to the clouds, it looks bad. They also "chunk" in a and out of existence at different ranges and angles off-center of your vision, different clouds between eyes. They also need to be fixed ASAP.
Finally, white-hot or black-hot IR on the tgt pod has crazy contrast swings that black out\white out the picture if a little smoke comes into view of the tgt pod, even just a little at the edge when zoomed all the way out.
You should probably adjust the quickstart to hide these bugs (change the time of day, remove clouds, and remove all the fires\smoke) until they are fixed, just something about showcasing all of your bugs to the beginners jumping into the quickstart seems like a bad idea.
Overall it was definitely worth the $10 though, and these bugs will be fixed quickly right Wags?
You probably found the answer elsewhere, anyway - check the right MFD, press the top right button. That will do the trick. ;-)

Rockets a generally unguided, missiles are guided. In this case of course we have guided rockets. :)
It used to be that rockets were unguided and missiles were guided. Obviously these are guided rockets so essentially missiles, but lets throw it on size then. APKWS is too small to be called a proper missile ;)
the only reason they are called guided rockets is because they are retrofitted rockets with seeker heads and fins
