Considering the mixed and smaller size of the stones used to make up the original bottom level, I amazed that the weight of the later upper floors added did not bring the whole thing down not long after they were built. Still, it is too bad it was not maintained over time. I wonder if there are any paintings or tapestries from the earlier times that might show what some of the rooms looked like then.
The stones are small, but the walls are usually very thick. It's the mortar that brings it all together and gives it it's strength. You can see a detail of how they did those wall on the channel that is rebuilding a Chateau. Escape from Rural France is doing it himself so you get to see how it was actually built so long ago.
