Thanks for this one - I was given one of these locos and after a tear-down and general service on the motor / gear box, was sure it was missing some parts off the Tender, which was why it wasn’t running. After carefully watching your video several times, I realised that no parts were missing and it was merely a number of poor / dirty contacts on the Tender Chassis / trucks / wire connection that was the issue. IPA, 2000 grit sandpaper and a few drops of oil had it running like a brand new one. Thanks again 😁👍🇦🇺
Thanks so much for your videos! I am 53 and starting to restore my collection of Tyco engines. Your videos really help! I love to see younger folks getting into the hobby! Keep on doing what you're doing my friend!
My first HO locomotive from a set my Dad bought me for Christmas at age 7. Santa Fe #24. I still keep it as a switcher in every layout I've had for five decades+. I never altered it with valve gear or details. I did alter the road name to an East Coast RR. On the power trucks of Mantua/TYCO, remember POSH. Port Out, Starboard Home. The brass tender wheels go on the port side.
Super. Mine is very touchy about truck to frame contact, and burned up the little poke prong on the terminal wire connection to the tender under load, making it erratic for weeks until I replaced the wire, but runs really well. I filled in the traction tire slot awhile back, and this seemed to make it run much better, and I also put a thin plastic cover over the exposed drive gear so that I can operate it outside. Normally, it works the trolley line, paved street trackage with 4 3/4 inch radius curves used to gain access to the sugar mill, proudly pulling or pushing twelve car trains of sugar beet hoppers through the citys streets. P.S. When it had a traction tire, it could pull a 35 car train around those tiny radius corners without issue, but without rubber assist, 12 is the limit. Some trivia: On this hard working model railroad, where this locomotive has hauled thousands of cars, I replaced the traction tire twelve times, which is about once every three years, until I had the slot on the tire filled in with silver solder. It was worth it, but I miss the ability to pull 40 car trains with an 0-4-0. Hello again from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.
Always try to make the right locomotive drivers positive (+) when moving forward, and the left tender wheels negative (-) when facing forward. 💙 T.E.N. Edit: Some traction tires last far longer than others, with some being a range of cheap stretchy plastics, and others being solid rubber. I've had traction tires last less than a year, but some of the old school brands could last a lifetime of you don't operate your trains as much as I do. 🙂
Dremel brass wire wheel and dielectric grease for the areas where power travels through frame. Have 4 or 5 that i fixed from same problem. Which includes Clementine, Chattanooga, and Virginia truckee (reno) . remembering off top of head.
I like those little locomotives. Brass wheels on the tender go on the same side as the traction wheels of the loco. I get them backwards too sometimes.
I have successfully used the larger diameter heat shrink tubing thinly sliced for a traction tire. Heat shrink it on but not too much heat. It worked on my Gilbert HO steam switcher.
Another really nice video from SMT. Thanks. DAVID! Do not mess with us left-handers. We have secret powers. I'm thinking random shorts for you. Bwa-ha-ha.
Have you considered using Rail Zip for cleaning your rails? That makes it easy to keep the rails on bridges clean. You only need a few drops on each rail and then let the locomotive do the job by running it on the layout. Cleans not only the rail but the wheels on the locomotives and cars.
If I were you, I would go as far as sanding or hitting the mating faces of the tender screws with steel wool. I have four Mantuas including this 0-4-0 and that's something they've all needed once I got them. My 0-4-0 is now retired as its motor runs a much nicer 0-6-0 that has a diecast tender. I also have a 1950's Pacific with the earlier, far superior drivetrain as well as a heavy Mikado I need to find handrails, handrail mounts, a bell and new pilot for.
Wished the one I fixed today was this easy, dirty motor, tarnished wheels, same electrical problems with tender but worse ... and I had to make a draw bar for the tender too, it was missing. Fun little engines when they run right.
That has GOT to be the first time I've ever seen a locomotive have a tire blowout! Also, when troubleshooting, it seems like it would be a lot easier to separate the engine from the tender first instead of tying to handle them both simultaneously.
Unfortunately, TYCO Mantua engines had one side for power on the tender, and the other side on the locomotive itself. If he disconnected them from each other, it wouldn't have run at all, as it wouldn't make a complete circuit
You can get some neodymium magnets to replace the original alnico magnet. I've seen sets of, I think, 5 magnets in a stack that come out to the same length as the original. They are much stronger and the motor will run better and cooler. Also, the tender's brass pickup wheels should be on the same side as the loco's traction tires. Aero-Car makes a nice set of lubes in one kit. Adding a little more weight to the tender will help tremendously.
If/when you do get some Bullfrog Snot I’ll be looking for your report. I’ve had very limited success with it, but I know other modelers who swear by it. One thing for sure: spare traction tires for MTH and BLI locos are ridiculously expensive for what they are - and whatever they’re made of is subject to the same dry rot you encountered on the Tyco loco.
SMT Mainline There was a time when some of it got too cold during winter shipping and it didn’t work as it should have. I think I got one of those bottles. It never adhered to the driving wheels like it was supposed to - at least for me. So I’m staying tuned for reports from other people. It’s not cheap to buy - a small bottle was something like $25 US - except in comparison to the cost of new traction tired from MTH and BLI, plus a totally ridiculous cost for shipping (something like $10 for what could have been put into an envelope and sent for the cost of a first-class stamp). If it had worked as advertised, it would have been a bargain.
Dry rot will get ya everytime, Harrison. Actually catching it on video, classic! As for the tender wheelsets, it's a right/left thing. I don't think you're a southpaw, but if so, that would explain it? Thanks for sharing. 👍 👍 👍
Thank you thank you! I have this same unit and it’s not working! It’s been in my family since new in 1973. I think your tender might be a little tight to the engine though - may be why it’s ‘crabbing’.
Hello, I have an engine just like this. When I assemble the engine, the gear on the motor will not turn the drive wheels. the motor turns free, drive locks up when you put it together. I tried to find a manual on this engine but you are the closest I could get.
Harrison - 1) Do you have experience using a product called Bullfrog Snot as a replacement for old loco tires? 2) I thought you were escaping to the Caribbean for awhile. Trip cancelled?
I've heard if Bullfrog-Snot but I've never used it, I might get some soon since it would be easier than looking for replacement tires. I was in the Caribbean (this video like the last four was pre-recored) however me and my family returned early yesterday since we were concerned about getting stuck on the island.
I have a very similar locomotive and I've been trying to make it run. I managed to get it working after messing around with the rods (some were missing). I haven't messed around with it for a few months, but it was running similar to how it was at 5:54-6:02
Hi SMT. I have an old steam loco with what appears to be hardened grease all around the worm gears - what fluid would you recommend to clean this up? Keep up the great work!
I was hopping you would do it because I also have a mantua engine but it’s a 0-6-0 but it has the same shell and tender including the thing we’re the smoke box door and cab will Be remove but the long screw kept coming off and I think the problem is that the bottom part of the screw is busted so I guess that’s the problem
hey SMT your crash and fail video is uploading now should be down i about 1 hour. feel free to upload this to youtube just as long as i get credit for the editing. i would love to contact you on messanger if you have facebook messenger. i will link it in a edited version of this comment later. ua-cam.com/video/RTRmoNE-Rzk/v-deo.html

Love the little 0-4-0. It is pretty cool.
Always entertaining. Loved the shredded tire. My wife was watching with me and she asked “did he just swear?” Lol.
Dude I Lol’d at the wheel part. That was hilarious 😂
My first 040 was operated in 1977-1978. Christmas gift, I recall. Never moved beyond the "oval track" layout. Might give it go, again. Maybe.

Those old TYCo Mantuas are always fun to work with, because they never die, it seems! Nice job on this one, gives me a few ideas for my own.
These 0-4-0s are always an interesting thing to restore amazing work smt
I like those little locomotives. Brass wheels on the tender go on the same side as the traction wheels of the loco. I get them backwards too sometimes.
Great video as always ! Love the old Mantua locos
I have successfully used the larger diameter heat shrink tubing thinly sliced for a traction tire. Heat shrink it on but not too much heat. It worked on my Gilbert HO steam switcher.
I might try doing that at some point or possibly using bullfrog snot since finding replacement tires is probably all but impossible.
Gilbert made HO?
I happen to have the same engine, from when I was a teenager (don't ask); your tips will help get it running again!
Awesome job SMT, I hate disintegrating tires.
Awsome video SMT
Another really nice video from SMT. Thanks. DAVID! Do not mess with us left-handers. We have secret powers. I'm thinking random shorts for you. Bwa-ha-ha.
Another great fixer upper!
I knew the trucks were backwards when you put it back together
OMG LMAO. you made my day with flip wheel trucks and tire explosions. Thanks man!
The trucks being flipped around is a problem with older Roundhouse locos as well.
I have a few similar engines that have been sitting around in bits, great walkthrough on how to clean them up!

I usually just put rubbing alcohol on a napkin and lay it on the track and roll my train over it to clean it
Seems like it should have a copper or brass washer between the trucks and frame on the tender
This is very good because I have the same locomotive except the road number is 99 but still
Cool your finally fixing the mantua engine
That is a beautiful engine
ah yes it's always entertaining to watch you fix a loco lol, nice job

@@joekutschera9583 I'd forgotten about that.
@@whiteknightcat that's alright, I was confused when I got one and saw that too

Good job , hate traction tyres 😟
SMT is like the Jesus in the model train world. Bringing them back to life.
not a tyco fan at all to many bad locos. but i love the time and care you have taken in giving this 0 4 0 a new life. Spiffy
Tyco mantuas are far better then regular tycos (kinda like Life like and proto) but yes, it's nice getting to work on these old locos.
I think there should be two pick up bars from screw to axles.

One thing for sure: spare traction tires for MTH and BLI locos are ridiculously expensive for what they are - and whatever they’re made of is subject to the same dry rot you encountered on the Tyco loco.
I've heard good things about it as well although I received a lot where someone applied it poorly and it was causing the locos to derail.

You should paint it up as a Tyco Canadiana, so you can have all three from your dream!!

It’s almost Christmas 🎄
I have the exact same model they are nice
Awesome
When smt restores the engine and then all of a sudden a song comes up "on the Atchison ,Topeka and Santa Fe". (Look up the song it's good)
I have heard that song

Is it time to say "Serenity!"????
SMT, I worked on one of these today and found the tender’s contact to be very intermittent.
Getting good conductivity is the challenge.
That engine is an ALCO D-30.
Lol, the tires!
Good fix wish that I had skills like that
You should start a business fixing model trains! 😃
Looks like a o scale vintage lionel switcher

What is the thing called that you use to wake up ho scale trains.
You should make a test track for locomotives when they are broken

Nice! I just did a motor swap and made a video on my channel on a motor swap on one of these old shifters
