  • The Beatles played a significant role in backing Liverpool vocal harmony group The Chants.

Here, Joe Ankrah tells the story of how following his musical hero Little Richard, as well as accidentally introducing himself to a local group called The Beatles, led to the group being signed by Brian Epstein. The Chants had a number of popular singles, and member Eddie Amoo would eventually go on to form chart-toppers The Real Thing with his brother Chris.

My son is related to the Ankrah brothers through their mum's side of family. Only recently discovered this but now we know where his musical side comes from (son playes violin and guitar). There's no musicians on my side of family. Love showing my son these videos,

How wonderful. If you want more information, I wrote a book called "The Fab One Hundred and Four" in which I did a long interview with Joey Ankrah.

The term " doo - wop " wasn't used until the 1970s, so Joe Ankrah would use the term " vocal group " to describe The Chants & reference other artists such as Gene Chandler, The Coasters, The Flamingos, The Platters, The Penguins, etc.

WOW! I am awed and very impressed by how inclusive The Beatles were (especially in the early days). They seem to have an insatiable appetite to soak in all that surrounded them. Such energy!

not where I lived in NYC..we were already using the term doo-wop and so was the radio in mid 60's.. I remember a local high school battle of the doo-wop bands.. so by the mid-1960s it was already the term

@@pgroove163 - Thank you for letting us know about your personal experience at the time. The term " doo-wop " had apparently originated in your area & probably spread out over time, making it seem that it was a term created in retrospect.

They should have made it. The Beatles wanted success for them too.

I wonder if there’s anything on display about the Chants in the Cavern right now

Think the "CHANTS" is on the brick wall opp the cavern (the new Cavern) has most if not all the bands on there that appeared in the original Cavern.

People forget that rock and roll was a natural progression of the blues and most of the great blues artists were black.. If it hadn't been for people like Robert Johnson... Leadbelly.. Lightening Hopkins. Muddy waters.. Then later little Richard.. fats domino. Chuck Berry. etc.. We wouldn't have had bands like the beatles and the rolling stones

Absolutely right. The roots of the Beatles and Stones, etc, were in those great black musicians. Some of them, like Little Richard and Chuck Berry were more popular in the UK than the US, where they still had separate Race Charts.
