Interesting. In another interview he says he rang and spoke to Joe saying to come to the party, but to come alone and to not bring Kenneth with him as he wouldn't go down to well. (amongst other comments) He says Joe then rang him back really angry saying 'Why did you tell Kenneth about the party?' Peter Willes said that Kenneth had answered the phone impersonating Joe and was now angry, hurt and incensed by the comments and at being excluded from the party.

It was actually Michael Thornton, the theatre critic who had that particular experience, not Willes...

Whatever, Willes was pathologically jealous of Kenneth Halliwell's association with Orton and took every opportunity to belittle him. He was a creepy individual.

The vicious, jealous, catalyst who sent Halliwell over the edge with his lip curling contempt of him as a ‘non entity’ (diary entry a couple of weeks before the murder). Orton may have been sweet and funny but he was a complete egotist who couldn’t see what was happening under his nose and didn’t begin to take on board the desperate nature of Kenneth’s rapid mental unraveling (Sheila Ballantine, their close friend, noted that point just days before the denouement)
