    He was an entertaining playwright with an important message, but we should steer clear of absolutes .Taste and public ethics has a tendency to hypocritically villify people like Orton or Eulogise them as Saints.We risk seeing a caricature where there is nuance and subtlety.

    I wonder what would have happend if Joe Orton had lived. Given his level of promiscuity, it would have been hard to envisage him surviving AIDS. Had he got through that, he would have probably been in jail now for what he did with underage lads.

    Halliwell had every right to kill himself, but there can be no excuse for his murder of Joe Orton, and this film seems to be trying to excuse him. Halliwell was washed up, a has-been, who wasn't quite as clever as he thought himself to be. It really was the epitome of a toxic relationship, which they should have both realised.

    • @zeddeka
      @zeddeka 10 днів тому

      Haliwell was mentally ill - there was a history of it in his family. His father had committed suicide and Kenneth Haliwell found the body. And Joe's behaviour was a kind of emotional abuse. Of course that doesn't excuse what Haliwell did. But it does explain it.

    Eva Gabor was always so charming - love Barbara Kelly's American directness You don't see this kind of interaction between the guests on modern talkshows, sadly, today they would have Joe Orton come on and talk to Eamann only, triggering none of the delicious cross couch dialog. I am thinking of Irv Kupcinet's wonderful show in Chicago where the guests were seated around each side of a square coffee table, all facing in toward each other. Guests from different areas all talking together on a variety of topics, led by Kup in "the lively art of conversation" - really a great format, long gone.

    How exhausting to live every minute pretending you're not gay This conversation couldn't happen today because the gay man would be able to say "well this doesn't interest me because it's nothing to do with me" and they would change the subject Instead poor Joe Orton not only has to pretend to be interested but also he has to **pretend that he's heterosexual** It must have been a soul destroying way to live

    She's wonderful. Charles Bukowski said that some people didn't need to create any art as they were their very own works of art and that was enough❤ The terrible irony is that the one person who did so much to help Joe Orton become "Joe Orton", ie Halliwell, would become his very own nemesis and destroy him.

    Wow...that was so interesting...I think that RADA changed Joe's accent....His voice seemed to be pitched somewhere between middle and upper middle class. Though he must have begun with a Leicester accent...Madame Lambert would have been proud...

    Not a trace of the evidently not-very- bright Leicester lad brought up by working-class parents in a council house. Like Thatcher, he paid for elocution to change his accent. Always highly suspicious of such individuals. He comes across as priggish, superior and highly dislikable.

    Creep. Willes basically fesses to sabotaging their relationship while Kenneth was falling apart and trying to pull it together so he could try and move in on Joe but he reframes it as trying to save Joe from the mentally ill(how could somebody be such a degenerate,z suffering from mental illness?….) maniac. Those 2 were together for 16 years and this little turd tries to force his way in during the most precarious time humanly possible, total shame. I’ve met creepy fuckers like this before and you gotta throw them in the trash as soon as you spot their little rat whiskers. Also..Hash withdrawal???!! Idiot.

    The vicious, jealous, catalyst who sent Halliwell over the edge with his lip curling contempt of him as a ‘non entity’ (diary entry a couple of weeks before the murder). Orton may have been sweet and funny but he was a complete egotist who couldn’t see what was happening under his nose and didn’t begin to take on board the desperate nature of Kenneth’s rapid mental unraveling (Sheila Ballantine, their close friend, noted that point just days before the denouement)

    Joe must have been so much fun to be around. In his diaries, Kenneth Williams, who was a close friend of Joe, said how kind hearted, intelligent and charming he was. Kenny was shocked and devastated by Joes death and said that he never really got over the loss of "dearest Joe". Joe Orton was one of the greatest playwrights of modern times. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful gem❤

      I wonder if there was an element of self-preservation in that; Kenneth Williams had a complicated relationship with his homosexuality. Also, in another interview he gave he's rather less kind to Halliwell than he is in this scripted, curated piece.

    I wish Leonie Orton would realise - and the diaries, published in 1989, showed it clearly - that her brother was a paedophile, and no matter how good his plays were (debatable - I don't like them at all) that being a good playwright is no excuse, no excuse at all - I don't think she gets it at all. Her brother is a Jimmy Savile - alright, we regret and loathe the fact his head was staved in - but if Jimmy Savile had had his head staved in before he committed more crimes - and Orton was 34 and would have gone on to offend in Tangier again and again and again and again - how can you defend this stuff?

    • @iamsteviedee
      @iamsteviedee 8 місяців тому

      Well said. It is in the diaries, he liked young teenage boys. There is a road where I live called Orton Square named after Joe and they were going to erect a statue of him… bonkers.

      Nothing like Jimmy Savile. The Moroccan teenagers Joe had sex with were all very willing hustlers, thats not to say Joe’s behaviour was in any way laudable but to compare him to the predatory rapist that was Jimmy Savile is ludicrous.

      It's an insight into that whole period of the sexual revolution in the 1960s. Up until then, Britain had been stuck with the grossly hypocritical, cruel and intolerant attitudes of the Victorians. The sexual revolution challenged that and led to a period of flux where all the rules seemed to be about to be rewritten. On the one hand, it helped get rid of some of the nastiest laws and attitudes. But it also enabled a hell of a lot of predators.

    1:29 That said, this is not an Islington librarian, in his red shirt and bow tie, and it's certainly not Sidney Porrett, the Islington Council clerk-of-a-solicitor who went for Orton and Halliwell. Why make pretence?

      Yes, he is. He worked for the borough libraries for many years, 50s - 70s. His name was Jim Connell, probably long dead now (July 2024). I was surprised to hear his sister claim for their mother Bob Dylan's 1965 line about the weatherman.

  • @WilliamSmith-mx6ze
    @WilliamSmith-mx6ze 11 місяців тому

    Funny, no time to mention Orton and Halliwell in Tangier both raping 14 year old boys as if it was the thing to do, and both of them comparing notes (see Orton's diaries where it's all laid out in detail). Neither their 'hilarious' mucking about with library books, nor Orton's death at the hands of Halliwell, can remove the fact they were both paedophiles. They both deserve the posthumous reputation of Jimmy Savile.

    So many people completely misunderstand the relationship between Kenneth and Joe. Mainly straight people who cherish fidelity. I have been friends with many gay men in my life, and I have never met ONE who thought being faithful was important. Kenneth went to Tangiers with Joe. Whilst he may have had less self confidence than Joe, I don't think it was the infidelity that bothered him so much as the lack of success. He contributed massively towards Joe's success and then was left feeling lonely, as Joe went to awards evenings and all sorts of events ALONE. Yes, at some of those events, appearing openly as a gay couple would have caused a scandal, but not all of them. There is no WIFE who would have been happy to stay at home eating spam sandwiches while her other half appeared at an awards evening. Picture this as a wife, who is trying to write a novel, and be an artist, with only a modicum of success. This was like a see-saw that lifted only one of them into the air. Of course, we will never know how much Halliwell contributed to Orton's writing, although Kenneth Williams suggests that Halliwell was very good at editing. We are missing the last pages of the diary, so we can't know what might have happened. Although many people found Ken irritating and pedantic, Orton was with him longer than many hetero marriages! The film with Oldman in portrays Halliwell as quite ugly but he wasn't significantly uglier than Orton. They laughed a lot together and the library books in my opinion were the greatest of their works.

    ‘Orton was a screaming ponce who stuck his cock up anything that moved.’ Now that’s the type of statement that would have had Orton himself in stitches. Still, joking aside, it’s hard to believe that this is the man himself and the only known professional footage of him being interviewed. Heartbreaking also that only a few months later he would be murdered in such an horrific way. If he’d lived then I think AIDS would have had him in the 1980s, given his promiscuity and sexual devil-may-care attitude. Sears’ film portrays Halliwell as a pompous pathetic man who has to stand by and watch his boyfriend become spectacularly successful while reading of his unfaithfulness through the diaries that Orton left hanging about in that tiny flat of theirs. I think that Peter Willes did a pretty good demolition job of Halliwell in the meantime, thus sealing their doom. Tragic story.
