MES and Brix had just split up (on 4 Jan 1989). Brix was still technically a member of The Fall, and a seat had been booked on the plane for her to fly to Germany with the group for this gig. "Brix dreaded the trip, and on the day she simply bypassed the airport and disappeared to a luxury hotel in Sussex." (Simon Ford, Hip Priest p.186; cf Brix RiseFallRise pp.244-252, and Steve Hanley Big Midweek p.276). Explains a lot about the atmosphere of this gig.
Left them in the lurch, came crawling back in 94 and then pissed off again. Typical. Gotta commend MES for mixing business and pleasure with so consistently in his musical career. He made those goofballs in Fleetwood Mac look like amateurs by comparison.
Great to see this. I've been a Fall fan from 1979 through about 1986 and never got to see much of what came later. Great as always - a commendable performance considering they are missing Brix who played such a critical role during her time with the band. Imagine it with her guitar there and then it's like aaahhh
Brix having split with MES and left The Fall, her guitar tech Phil Ames stands in for her here - his first and only Fall gig. The bored audience may be down to Phillip Boa also appearing on this show and they may be waiting for him 👍💖

So with that guy Phil Ames in the line-up this is a unique Fall gig - interesting, thanks for that.
Wait a minute. Where on stage is Mr. Phil? I see Craig on guitar, Marcia, Simon & Steven

Bass tone 🙌
Wow 🤩
more of this kind of thing
Make em wait, Mark E
Let the Germans and their precious punctuality......wait😂❤
Presenter clearly inspired that terrible Bruno character ali G follow up.
„When it is your Grandmother on Bongos and me on vocals, than it is The Fall!“(Mark E. Smith…somewhere in the 80ies/maybe 90ies]
Always different, always the same as John Peel is often quoted as saying...Almost awesome as I always say.
Up The Fall.
Who was that one guy, Guten Ramsay?
mark 'lonewolf' smith rides again into the sun
Ouch :( The group literally in the process of being dismantled prior to Extricate. And it shows. Squid Lord kinda works.
Does it ever start ?
What's the dancers name?Seen her in few Fall things.
Brilliant MES RIP..As the Great John Peel used to say 'Always different always the same'.
Peel was also a paedo
"Carry your bag man" 😂😂😂👍

I like Tom Jones’ Kiss opening this
You whip that bass around, Craig!
Craig? Steve Hanley
The excessive yank drawl in the vocals suddenly emerged after hearing a fan's Lou Reed cover demo tape sent in around 1990.
Brix would know who... 😉
Tell more??
LondonDada is that you ?
Still not as egregious as Brix stealing the riff from I Wanna Be Your Dog for Elves.
Wadsworth Constant applies here.
the audience are great,,bemused and indifferent...theynever wanted to tbe worshipped (obvs)
The states always miss out on amazing groups.
even American ones ?
"Nicht der Herbst!"

I only have one comment about this audience: Horse tranquilizers.
there's something to be said for horse tranquilizers!
LOL!
Isn't that European audiences for you in general? My European mates were always blown away by the energy from crowds in the UK.
yes we had plastic beer glasses in 1989. Plastic people trying to make the scene. Shout for "the Fall" like a cargo cult.
Are German audiences just polite or are they not getting this?
haha I think Europeans are notorious for standing during shows,it's lowkey changing from American influence though.
@@pizzasandwich8229 haha what a load of bollocks. It´s the other way around. American music crowds are just as shitty as their sport fans.

Nothing that hadnt been done before..and way better by Don van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart and his Magic band
Beefheart did make the greatest Music in the Universe. However Mark and the Fall are up there too.
Moments of Sonic Youth vibe here also imo.
