The secret is that, whatever the backing, Mark's voice is sufficient to define the sound. That's a trick we see in every band led by a definitive front-person.
Probably the best Fall song, and a damned good version of it. Fuck it, what am I saying? It's the Fall! If it's fucked up, it's still good! Always different, always the same.
It's quite a common theme in The Fall's music, sometimes they intentionally play in different keys (Polytonality). Take a song such as Rebellious Jukebox, the bass plays in E major whilst the guitar plays in E minor. Here the bass progression suggests it should be in Ab minor, but the guitar plays in Ab Mixolydian, a major mode. Secret genius.
@@Robhalifax Oh yeah totally, everything off that record is pretty much unparalleled, as much as Witch Trials is my favourite Fall record, Hex is definitely their finest hour.
@@frazerspooner7683 you had just as well have explained in German for all I understood about Notes of Instruments, but cheers very interesting explanation as the Guitar definitely sounds different to the Hex version ✌️
+Wyatt Powers Guys he's been doing this for quite a while. Maybe he genuinely changed his own attitude to that line? Maybe he didn't, but don't assume it's self-censorship just because the words are different. It's not like he replaced the word, he's changed the entire verse. The criticism in that line was relevant when the song was written and has become less so. Maybe he considers it juvenile to keep the "controversial" line when its lost its barb. Maybe not, and maybe I'm completely wrong, but let's not assume MES is playing PC or self censoring or in some other way comporimising his artistic integrity - his form in this area would strongly suggest otherwise.
Gold
… if not platinum
there's just the barest hint of the wonderful 'never felt better in my life' refrain, what a teaser he was, always leave 'em wanting more
yeah because his singing was so top notch
Never felt better in my life
One of my favourite Fall stunners!!!
Excellent rendition of the song! Ben was a real guitar whizz in The Fall!

Love the jam band qualities of this song. And never felt better in my life. Wonder if he knew he was sick then?

beautifully put
This is actually a really good version. This incarnation of the band tended to overdo their "updating" of classic Fall, but this one is great.
I agree. The old groove works really well with the funky drummer stylee.
The first time I heard this song on John Peel's Music on BFBS in 1981. I love it.
RIP Mark 😢
This is beautiful.I feel whole now.Truth is beauty...
Best thing I’ve ever heard or seen

An interesting complement to the original.
Clssic The Clasical! Sorry if some one's made the observation earlier, I'm listening mostly.. but repetition, ah

Walks tall! Walks tall!
There is no culture is my brag
Life sentences us. Right, Brix? :)
This is when Mr Drummer has not got anything about what The Fall is anyway.
Im no musician but the guitar sounds like its in a different key than it should be.

@@frazerspooner7683 Im sure you're right but I much prefer the regular version of The Classical

its the keyboard player fromRobert Palmers backing band that is off key. but who cares?
Smith self-censors " where are the obligatory n*****s" from opening line.
Playing PC safe these days, the old dog.

@@murkartikWhy is it "controversial" for a white guy to say niggers in a song?
Isn't it controversial?
Cannot recognise The Classical from this unmelodious rubbish.
I agree
@Richard Benn every time different, but the same!
I never felt better in my life🍻🚬🥴💞
