    I'm not complaining about the performance, though that is a concern. I'm complaining about the screen size. What I want from an iMac is basically a Mac Studio with 5k 27 inch screen, great speakers, webcam and microphones. And the ports of a Mac Studio.

    The problem is not M3 performance but stubbornness of offering just one screen size and, off course, the measly 250 Gb + 8Gb RAM as base configuration. And lets not forget the UI is much poorer than the former iMac interaction - no SD card reader, no Ethernet (optional on M1-3 and external), just 2 thunderbolt 3 (not 4…) ports… The previous iMac line could be speced as a semi-pro machine, this one single model cannot.

      You’re looking at it from an incredibly narrow viewpoint. My gf couldn’t care less about 256gb. Same as my mother and sister etc. loads out there that finds 256gb plenty.

      We have had an m1 iMac for past two years with 256GB SSD, currently still have 185gb free. We simply use an external 1TB drive for anything large. For £85 for a 1tB external T7 Samsung it makes no sense to fall for Apples price gouging SSD upgrade costs.

    • @midnightsnack1306

      You know what’s more sad than Apple’s 8/256? The people willing to defend it in 2023. It is “this is good enough mentality” the reason companies like Apple stay stagnant instead of offering better specs and better deals because consumers do not care and keep buying them.
      Back in 2010, my parents did not care that they had only 2gb ram and a non-SSD Macbook but once they began to grow as users learning how to edit pictures, layout news letters, and multitask several apps at once. They told me their Mac grew slow.
      Good thing you can upgrade the MacBooks back then and I upgraded the RAM and SSDs as their needs grew. Something not possible in today’s iMac.

    I think a lot of people seem to forget the original iMac concept - a simple computer for the masses. Over time it became more powerful to plug the gap between the Mini and the Mac Pro, but now we have the Studio to fill that gap and the iMac has gone back to this original concept. It's a simple computer for those with modest needs. As an all in one it is still the best one on the market, and it is fast enough for most people doing just 'stuff'. It's a case of right tool for the job, if you need more RAM, CPU, etc then get a Studio with your choice of monitor, or a MBP. I'm sure Apple would sell a ton of 'iMac Pro' type computers if they decided to make one. I guess make enough noise and they will do that, but the trend seems to be power users are just buying the high-end MBP.

    • @grouchyfluff
      @grouchyfluff 6 місяців тому +1

      yes! i was up in arms before i even started the video about people complaining it was a bad computer. The M1 24” wasn’t a bad computer. It’s SUPPOSED to be simple. It’s not designed to be a mega powerful workhorse. It’s the computer you buy your grandma or your parents or someone who uses email and googles recipes and watches youtube. It’s difficult to examine this from a tech-enthusiast standpoint because this is not the computer for the tech enthusiast, and it wasnt designed to be that.

    • @innnews6299
      @innnews6299 6 місяців тому +12

      True. But Apple is too greedy. Base computer models in late 2023 should start with AT LEAST 16GB Ram and 1TB SSD.

      @shaunpugh3287 6 місяців тому

      @@innnews6299 Agree with you there. I have an M1 Air with 16GB and occasionally it does complain about not enough RAM. As efficient as MacOS is, there is no way 8GB is enough for anything but the most simple of tasks, and common sense will tell you that it will page very heavily if there's not enough RAM shortening the lifespan of the SSD. At the prices Apple are charging 16GB should be standard on all models

      The 27" iMac though was amazing. They need a 27" version of this, keep everything else the same, and it will sell a lot. However, it would also eat into the Studio/mini sales. But as it is now, the mini/studio combined with that SUPER expensive 5K monitor is way more money than a 27" iMac used to be.

      @@77drisI quickly got used to the 24” size. I adjusted the resolution in settings and feel there is plenty of screen real estate. The 4.5k display is also high quality. It’s not quite 5k, but it’s better than 4k. This is a very nice computer that doesn’t get enough credit, especially if you spec it up a bit.

  • @lenn55
    @lenn55 6 місяців тому +8

    Not sure why people can't understand that the 24" iMacs are a replacement for the 21.5" iMacs and not the 27" iMacs. If you want something to replace the 27" iMacs then you have to get either a mini or studio with the Apple studio display unfortunately.

      That's true the only problem is that Mac mini with same exact chip as iMac with no performance gains and paired with studio display is in my opinion is bad value for 2200$ with 8gb ram and 256gb ssd. It's bad value and not the replacement for 27 inch iMac. Apple should make iMac pro to replace the 27 inch iMac even the Mac Studio is not a replacement for 27 inch iMac. As for 24 inch it is awesome value now with m3.

    I would still keep this iMac over the M3. I don't think it's worth me spending over $2400ish for a new iMac especially the screen size.
    I think the new M4 or M5 will be the better upgrade in terms of iMac even with 24".
    The current M3 vs Intel iMac the CPU and SSD destroys and beats the Intel version. GPU wise, I still think that 5700xt is still going strong.

Everything in your video is correct and the machine is used for the general reasons and not made for professional heavy loads that pro devices would be used for. This has a 4.5k monitor along with the m3 chip for the same prices as the m1. When this is used for the reasons it was made for it is the perfect machine with more speed and power than the M1.

I’ve always wanted to try one of the new m1 chips from apple. I mainly wanted it for watching movies and everyday use plus light video editing and the main reason was the battery life. I love my 13900hx its a beast but im lucky to get 4-5 hours doing very light tasks (more like 3-4 probably) And I have an iPhone so it should play nice with the MacBook. Luckily I did save some money buying it Cyber Monday and im still debating on picking up apple care for it.

    I had the fully spec'd-out M1 model, and was very impressed overall, especially the aesthetic, an absolutely beautiful looking machine. So much so, I had to re-arrange my room/desk layout just so I (and everyone else!) could see that deep metallic blue and big-ass Apple logo.
    I was also just as impressed with the fact that despite it not being a "Pro" machine, it could handle "Pro" tasks.
    So I was very happy when Apple announced their "Scary Fast" event, and dropped the M3 24' iMac. With little to no change, at all! (If it ain't broke, why fix it!?!), I again ordered the Blue, fully spec'd-out model (within 15 min. after launch).
    Now, a 27' model would have been nice, as would a "Pro" version, but that would have cost a lot more, besides, I believe they will be coming soon anyway. And yeah, they could have changed out the Lightning charge ports to USB-C, but to be honest, it really isn't that big of a deal, I mean, its not like anyone is transferring data through the mouse/keyboard/trackpad, and in my experience, they only need charging every 2-3 weeks at most, so I don't really see the big deal (with the exception of the mouse, that shit needs to be changed!).

    I realized mid-convo with someone else in convo with, that the 24inch is what the iMac's were originally ( the white iMac and the first aluminum ones that followed )
    I came from the 27in and got used to this 24in size within a few hours ( I changed the display setting to more space and it is like my 5k was honestly )
    In terms of power, I produce music and do some basic video editing and how my previous 5k was to this, this one is so damn smooth, I'm beyond happy.
    I went for the highest model (2TB and 24gig of ram) because I'm not one who likes to change machines often. If it can go the distance, I'm happy and if my previous 2015 5k was still working like new, even up to now, then this one should of course exceed it, and that will make anyone happy in the long run.
    Oh and extra ports, you can easily get a dock ( ones that blend with the stand so it looks like its a part of it ) for about a hundred bucks.
    I also got a thunderbolt enclosure with a 1TB SSD that matched Apple's internal drive of over 3000gb read and write, so the space issue can be resolved as well easily. ( this I wish i knew before purchasing the iMac, I would have gotten a minimal storage and higher on the external )
    But yea, I think if people actually own one, pro or not who had iMac's...they are going to be very happy.

    I have a 2019 iMac 27 inch, i9, 40 GByte of RAM. I have performed coding, Matlab based simulations, 10-15 minute iMovie renderings with 4K/60 log footage, etc. without any issues except for some notable fan noise. I opted to not spend the $400 for the updated graphics at the time of purchase though one could certainly argue at the time that it would future proof the machine. Ha. I do look forward to updating to an M3 Pro or more likely M3 Max system and possibly using it with my 27 inch iMac via Universal Control for parallel tasks. I can't imagine that the 24 inch iMac will be future proof for the next ten years. For example, this machine may not be able to smoothly handle even modest future video production for AR and VR applications which will be much more commonplace than they are today. In ten years, a base system may very well come with at least 64 GByte of RAM. UA-camrs will ridicule Apple for including such a low amount of RAM:)

    8gb definitely isn't future proofed. the iMac also no longer makes much sense in a world where Mac laptops can be specced to a faster machine. in days gone by it wasn't just for the extra screen size but also the extra performance as to why you'd go for the iMac. sadly that's no longer the case and Apple have effectively killed off this once beloved computer. they've also messed up the Mac Pro too IMO given they should have fused 2x Ultras together, but my guess is there that the extra grunt didn't scale up very well.

    - I love the iMac. I’ve owned almost every model from the start.
    I do professional work, video and graphic…. My iMacs have proven to be very capable. Now my 27” intel is getting fussy. So I find this review helpful in my research to upgrade.
    I really don’t want a studio set up if possible.
    - So many comments here seem to rip on Apple. Kind of strange coming from tech savvy people - especially the negativity about the base model configurations. It’s silly. The online purchase options naturally default to the least expensive configuration but Apple could very easily default to the most expensive setup as well. Then the purchaser could strip off what they don’t want.
    I guess it bugs some that Apple products are higher end $$$ but that’s life.

    There is greater value in the M2 mac mini with 16GB of RAM if the parent is willing to shop around, but Apple knows that audience is too lazy to shop around.

    I think there are reviewers who rate a product like the iMac based on what they would like it to be and not what it actually is. I would have liked a 27-inch, screen, but Apple doesn't want it to compete with its own 27-inch studio display. I've also read complaints about the price Apple charges for upgrades. No surprise here as Apple products are not cheap. I've also read complaints that there are no options for the M3 Pro or Max. Hey, this product is not intended for power users, but its intended users will definitely be satisfied with it.

    This is the most cognitive dissonance ive seen. "Surfing the net is a 17% increase performance making it the fastest surfing we've tested"... to video edit was about 20 seconds faster on the old Pro which isnt that noticeable. Surfing relies more on webpages available so if a website is changing their layout for new sales or products, then youll be limited to the servers speeds they can crank out, not your fiber optic internet company. Having slower renders and dropping from 27" to 24" is going to impact people more than just "it actually performs slightly better than the old 9ne its replacing, but 24" isnt that big of a differeence. I used to have a 23" monitor. Then a 25" photo editing monitor. Now q 32" 4K 160hz miniLED monitor. I couldnt go back to 25" or even a 27".

Pros of the intel one: 1. screen is basically the same quality as top of the line Apple displays 2. you can upgrade ssd + ram instead of living with 256 gigs (which is not enough for any production these days) 3. performance is not that far below 4. significantly lower price 5. it can normally run windows and play normal games with adequate stable fps, not like emulated, staggering, golden M3 Max

    Even if the new M3 iMac with 24GB of RAM is faster than a maxed-out iMac Pro or 2020 Intel iMac, there are still 5 things that make people stick with their Intel Macs.
    1. Screen size - 27 inches was basically what everybody liked and wanted. The old iMac's had near-perfect displays.
    2. Memory - The iMac Pro could be upgraded to 512 GB of RAM. Now, the new iMac can only go to 24. Pros that want the all-in-one design can't use the iMac as their machine because of this limitation.
    3. Storage - The 2020 Intel iMac could go to 8TB of storage. However, now we are limited to 2TB
    4. Ports - The new iMacs lack an SD port and USB-A.
    5. Price- If the new M3 can beat the 2017 iMac Pro and 2020 27-inch iMac, it still doesn't matter because people can get a Mac Studio or MBP. But the reason why the higher-end iMacs were so popular was because they made that power affordable. The Mac Studio base model + the standard display are as expensive as the highest-end iMacs were.
    The solution? An iMac Pro. 27-inch screen size, SD card reader on the side like the headphone jack. Thicker design for USB-A and the 27-inch screen, and to accommodate options for an M3 Pro and M3 Max chip to get Pro levels of RAM and storage again.
    The answer is so simple. These 5 reasons are why the iMac M3 is a bad choice. Not because of the reasons you listed. Why should I spend 3300 USD for a maxed-out M3 iMac when I could spend 3500 for a maxed-out iMac Pro on eBay? And then go a step further and get a maxed-out 2020 27-inch on eBay with nano-texture glass for just 4500 for a near-mint condition model? The iMac Pro will save Apple. But they keep waiting and waiting...

    I wont be buying one until Apple enters the 20 20's and makes it a 27" display and stops ripping its customers off, by charging £200 per measly 8GB ram and £200 per measly 512gb storage, when you can buy 8gb of Ram from any other source for £20 and get an 8TB drive for £300 !
