No Face is a full circle sympathetic villain. Villain because what he does is absolutely villainous. Sympathetic because we understand his motives and can relate. Full circle because we get to see his fall into villainy, we witness his villainy at its fullest, and we are with him throughout his redemption. A full circle, so to speak.
A bit out of topic but I'd like to mention Yubaba's giant baby who goes through a character arc similar to the No Face. He starts out as a spoiled brat, eager to harm Chihiro for his own amusement. Unlike NF he's an incredibly privileged kid who never had to earn what he had and was basically his mother's whole world. Without Chihiro and his aunt he had all the chances to grow into a horrible person. But after his transformation into a mouse and going on a journey with Chihiro he learns compassion. He protects Chihiro from NF and later helps her to win over Yubaba. Trapped in a body of a mouse he realises how it feels being small and insignificant, to fight for your very survival. A knitting lesson along with NF teaches him the value of hard work, the joy of making something for yourself by yourself. The pivital moment in his story is when he learns to stand and walk which he was unable to do while living with his mom. Having no one to rely on the Baby finally has a chance to become stronger and more independent, gains inner strength and understands the importance of friendship. As a result, the kid turns from a horrible giant little pig into a better, more selfless and responsible person, into someone who's capable of making his own choices and standing up for himself and the people he cares about. The moral of his story (in my opinion): it's important to protect and support your child but if you spoil and shelter them from every inconvinience when you try to do everthing for them they don't get a chance to truely grow up and "stand on their feet".
Yeah I think you nailed it. he's a great character. I was going to talk about him a little but I didn't want the video to go over 20 minutes. One thing I've always wondered is did Yubaba actually give birth to him? He's like twice her size. And who's the father? The movie has so much ambiguity but it's always the good kind where it's more fun to wonder.
@@davescripted3796 maybe his giant size and strength along with a childlike appearance and behavior were supposed to symbolize his messed up mental state. Like he's already too big for a baby but continues to be seen and treated as such. Or maybe this phenomenon wasn't supposed to have any explanation at all and just got added for comedy and grotesque.
Pretty sure the hair band was just intended to be a gift. Its the bound crafted from everyone together. God that line allways makes me cry, litteraly. Everyone loves the train, but can we plz aknowledge how charming Zenibas scenes where?
Ahh I love this analysis!! No Face has been my favourite character pretty much ever since I can remember, even before I really understood why. This video puts it into words so well. That's exactly how I see him too. Thank you!
Didn't expect that subscribing with notifications would pay off so soon! 😁 I love No Face, can't wait to watch this. And you're right, it really does sound like Wizard of Oz 😮
This is a great video it explains the beautiful meaning of the movie! Also dont forget yubaba's pledge and how that contributes for the story: she pledges to give work to anybody who needs it. She mutters to herself in regret of doing this pledge. This shows what good intentions employers can have at the beginning and how that good intention and motivation dissolves into an abusive working enviroment. That line always stuck to me. Yubaba also changes a bit by the end of the story.
Yeah I've always liked the pledge as well. It's a great detail, but did she make it out of good intentions? I always got the impression she was pressured into it.
No face only becomes a greedy monster after he eats the little frog guy, he talks with the frog’s voice when he’s eating everything, but then goes back to normal after he barfs him up.
You called it! That's just what I was thinking! I actually thought about that exploring that but the video was getting too long. Great character in his own right.
Fantastic video! Spirited Away is my comfort movie when my anxiety is high. I love the forms of No Face as he jumps down from the bathhouse his little leggies under an umbrella shape of his dress/cloak/body are so cute. I at once want to know everything about the world and where No Face comes from but also do not want to know a single thing more because its perfect as is.
great analysis! very interesting & entertaining. I always found No-Face's story moving, but until today, couldn't have really explained why. thank you for your work, you're very good at this! (pun intended, but also true)
I really suggest using footage from the original cast. No hate to anyone who would rather watch in English, but when discussing a film in such detail, you should really consider it as it was originally produced. Imagine making a video essay about Parasite with some weird English dub. The acting and voice direction is crucial to the tone and style of the film, and enhances the director and art director's storytelling.
Before filming and shooting starts all the major cast should do full script/movie reenactment (which would also be shot) in 10 minutes: crux/essence of the film, 20-30 mins: character interactions and 1 hour: playing out the major arc of the story, all of it should be done in improvisational way as getting to know the story and characters. Then enactments should serve as a guide not just the script. Also there should be a concept/idea of relative time with respect to filming, unless the story happens in 1 day like a chase, scenes should be shot relative to timeline of the while story so that the characters have time to grow, absorb what's happening, come up with a response keeping everything in mind and not simply reacting like starting points in the story and the actors could also be given hints/direction while waiting for the next shoot and also giving the room for the script to evolve. While shooting the film there should be some days before shooting everyone should mention how they feel as the character and what their characters perspective is, what they think about it, what are their stakes, what the situation/scene means to them/character to everyone involved in the scene. This should be done for major story changes/arcs and big scenes.

Yes we can. I love everything about the entire Zeniba sequence. If I could live in her house, I would
