You weren't kidding about the amount of special Q-tips that come in a box. I bought a box and It was so full it wouldn't stay closed they had to put the box inside of a plastic bag to keep the Q-tips from jumping out! More to the point of this video our local harbor freight hasn't had an airbrush in the 2 months i've been looking. Maintenance guy at work does scale models for cash and though he much prefers his Iwata he said the harbor freight brush he has was surprisingly decent. I don't do many scale models anymore but I wanted one for priming minatures and for terrain pieces but they seem to be always out. Great video Rex!
Great review! Thanks for this. I have recently got back into the model building world with my oldest son and was looking for a good starter airbrush for us to work with. For fine lines it's recommended to use a needle size of 0.2mm. You can use a 0.3mm with good results just lower the air pressure and remove the needle cap. Spray close using a light touch of air releasing a minimal amount of paint.

Thank you for an honest, quality review. I've been watching your videos and looking to get into the hobby. Harbor Freight often gets a bad rep but it seems like the quality of their products has improved over the years. I may consider this as my starter kit before getting into the more expensive airbrushes.

I’d agree. Harbor freight is for cheaper tools. I don’t know why people pick them apart. It’s like going to Walmart and buying Filet mignon and then complaining that it’s not top notch. Lol but yes they do seem to have gotten a tad better as time goes on. They’re the Walmart of tools!
When you turned the pressure down to 10psi, it started splattering because of the pulsating due to lack of an air tank to buffer the pump/compressor. I run one of those el cheapo $58 Master Airbrush “adjustable” pressure tankless pocket compressor w/ double action airbrush. Also use, again, el cheapo $35 Master Airbrush pistol grip double action airbrush. They all work great, except for the “adjustment” for pressure, it doesn’t really work. But it’s actually amazing how small/thin/fine lines I can spray without the telltale dotting you get from tankless compressors. The 6ft braided hose helps a little
Turns out my ol' lady had a paint shaker tucked in the very back of one of her drawers....must've been a different design.... maybe its an immersion type that stirs up big cans of paint... might be why it smells funky too. great vid as always.
Yes Trowa, I haven't seen Wing in a couple of years. I like to re-watch them at least once a year. My wife is watching IBO for the 6th time. It's her favorite show
This is the compressor I went with when I first started watching your videos. I ended up getting a separate tank and hooked it up to this compressor. Works really good and thanks to you I've learned a lot and even got into building model kits. Thank you so much and keep up the great video.
@G4L4CTICNORTH Hello, Yes it is that simple, regulator coupled to the tank and a air hose to the compressor. Make sure there is a over pressure protection valve in the loop too, in case the regulator fails. I don't think a regulator has this build in. And do not forget to drain the water from the tank after every session :-)
I'm very new to airbrushing and picked up two air brush kits from Harbor Freight based on your reviews. The Avanti kit is on sale through 1/17/22. Picking one up tomorrow. Thanks for all you do.
The old harbor freight combo was and is to this day my airbrush. I’ve never bought another except some lesser quality brushes online but totally serviceable. I’ve greatly enjoyed it and while I’m no expert, it suits me.
Great video. I just purchased this and it was delivered today. Tomorrow I am going to break mine out and plan to do a video on it as well. I was curious what was already out there and your video is absolutely awesome. Thank you for sharing it. I am not an airbrush expert but it looks like you are very skilled and experienced. I look forward to learning more from your channel. Liked and subscribed!
Great review! Looks a lot like the generic "Hseng" air compressors which sold under a lot of brand names. I picked up a very similar one from Aldi Australia under the brand name Ferrex - the compressor is pretty much identical except for the airbrush holder and it came with a cheap siphon airbrush and rubber hose, but the entire kit was $80 AUD. Local hobby store sells them too and there's some variants with tanks.
I'm also noticing that the vents on the side and the heat sink on top look exactly like the old Central Pneumatic also sold by harbor freight. Looks to me like they added the airbrush holder and painted it a different color.
Thank you for doing this video. I bought the same one with my Christmas money and so can’t wait to get started. I’m gonna do models and t-shirts. Thank you so much. Have a great day.
I just bought this same beginner’s kit and I really like it so far and I will try removing the front cover to the tip to see if it get a finer line, thank you for the review 👍
Based upon your review and recommendation I took a run to the local Harbor Freight. Picked up a combo set. Caught it on sale for $95. and change, not bad. Tested it out. Seemed to work fairly well all things considered. Did use an aftermarket quick connect. I recently came upon some of your You Tube videos. I have been a modeler for a number of years mainly in the railroad area but have done other things a well. Have been using airbrushes for the past 35 yr. Primarily Binks and Badger hooked up to larger shop air compressors. Like your videos. They are good for the novice airbrushes as well as seasoned users. You have pointed out some tips I was not aware of. Never hurts to share tips and pointers with others in the avocation. Have a question with regard to the old Testors enamels. ( I remember when the were a dime a 1/4 oz. bottle) You mentioned using them in your airbrush. Didn't catch the ratio of thinner to paint. I would suspect a 50/50 paint to thinner or there abouts. In the old days used Floquil... If you have a chance let me know about the mix ratio. Thanks.
I have the older HF airbrush kit. I didn't care much for the tankless set up, as it changed the pressure instantly so much. My buddy gave me an old junk 2gal air tank I think it was just a tire tank, but I mounted the compressor to it and plumbed it into the tank. Now I can get a pretty decent amount of air before the compressor has to kick back on. May still be a cheaper alternative if someone wants a little more air capacity.
I just bought a portable compressor and air brush combo off amazon, and I can with that exact same air brush, I just used it for the first Time and I'm very new to this hobby, but so far the air brush seems to work well, I like the idea of havin a portable compressor it seems like It would run better on wall power which you can do. And for 90 bucks for the combo isn't a bad entry price for getting into the hobby aswell. I got mine on sale for 65 so really can't complain
Awesome review! Based off your video I purchased one today for $108 out the door, just got into miniatures and I’m confident this will work just fine 👍
I started with the original combo (AB and compressor), and I ended up adding a tank to it. My dad had an old pancake compressor that had broken reed valves. Removed the original compressor, and adapted the HF compressor to fit onto the tank and plumbed it to fill. Added a refulator, as neither set up originally had an adjustable regulator, only a pressure cut-off switch. Wired it up to run off the pancakes adjustable pressure switch while bypassing (cutting) the HF cut-off switch. Works as I wanted it to not any louder than b4 I added the tank, however, the loud pop when the cut-off actuates will make one jump when you really are not expecting it. Haven't worked on suppressing it yet, but it works for me.
_"....I started with the original combo (AB and compressor)"_ Gee Wiz that sounded humorous! How many of us *Older* *Cats* thought he was talking about the pre 1930's Hairline fine Sprayer *Paasche* *AB* Turbo Air Gun?
Thanks, this was helpful! I picked this Avanti kit up a couple of weeks ago after checking out this video. I'm a total beginner. I paint mostly Warhammer/40K minis. So far so good after a couple of sessions. The cleaning videos on this channel were also very helpful. So far, I have used Vallejo matte black primer and some CItadel air paints. For today's session, I will be using the needle limiting knob and cranking down the pressure to 30PSI.
@@Boonedale Hi, I have done maybe a dozen sessions with this kit over the last 4 months, so I'm not a daily user. I have used it for priming models, terrain objects and laying down base colors. The kit continues to work properly as long as I keep the airbrush clean. I will probably pick up another airbrush for sessions where I'm priming and using airbrush paints. I'm still a pretty basic airbrush user, so the tankless compressor doesn't bother me.
Thanks for the great review! Just getting into airbrushing. I think this kit will do me well, and watching you will help me learn tips and tricks! Thanks again!
I'm so glad I stumbled onto this review having just got an almost identical one from Amazon... I've had a bit of trouble setting the pressure limit but I think it was an inferior regulator so i replaced it with a sold metal and way higher quality than the supplied one. The one supplied haemorrhaged air through the gauge itself so i imagine it was faulty in some way, however, once changed out for the higher quality one, it's solved the issue. great bit of kit to get you going, and to build up from, and i too have had excellent results from the airbrushes (3 supplied) that came with kit. So thanks for a great video review, it helped me a lot.
00 is great. I don't know how I stumbled upon this video at 5:30 am. Thanks for testing it with primer also. I am going to be painting some M16 furniture green and maybe some other small jobs and I think this combo meets my needs prettu good. I think it's worth mentioning that over a blower fan I can't even hear the pump, big deal. Nice vid
I was reviewing and pricing airbrushes and compressors. I ran across this at Harbor Frieght and now you confirmed my selection. I am a beginner using an airbrush, so thank you for this video!!
Honestly man buy a Paasche double action on amazon dude. It's basically paying this harbor freight price nonsense. You'll perform way better results using the .3mm for fine line and .5 for wider of course. "needle"
Appreciate the video! My girlfriend got me one of these for christmas and I'm really into it so far. My model group and I were talking about what an amazing grunt the Leo was earlier this week lol. Wing was great. Those shakers are amazing too. That's next on my list.
I've gotten into 40k and painting is my favorite part of the hobby. This is an airbrush I wanted to get because of the price and this is helps. Glad it works and I am looking to get it soon
@@demi323100 yes I did. Only did basecoats for space Marines so far (space wolves combat patrol) I did a basecoat over black spray can primer then a lighter blue as a highlight. It does it's job but I can see the shortcomings it has even as a newbie. Can't complain though definitely worth my money for the experience level I am at
I actually just picked one of these up a couple of weeks ago after watching your videos and it has been great for a beginner. For what it's worth, the instructions do say to use plumbers tape on the quick connect fitting and the fitting to the compressor, so mine didn't leak. But thanks for the tip on what to look for in other fittings. I could see myself upgrading the airbrush before I upgrade the compressor.
You have it correct, the compressor is the better piece of equipment between the two. With a better airbrush you'll be all set for a while. As a first good quality airbrush I'd go with a Badger Patriot 105
Thanks for the video, looking at getting one of these for painting my RC drift body's and it's 40% off right now. Definitely think it's worth picking up for 60 dollars
I got one of the HF older models which is a siphon feed and I think I'm gonna pick this one up as I need one with a gravity feed cup. I generally use my HF 8 gallon air compressor which I can throttle it down to 15 psi. Thanks for the review. I generally use my Badger Anthem 155 airbrush for my models with acrylic paints. I use the HF Chinese one usually for lacquer based paints. Cheers from eastern TN

The modo mk-12 straight out of the bottle is suited for brush painting. They recommend a 1 to 3 thinning rate on the bottle for airbrushing, I personally use about a 1:2.5 paint/thinner with a .3 procon and around 15-20 psi.
The quality of any brush or spraygun comes down to how well the holes and countours of the nozzle are milled and drilled out. There are some chinese clone brushes that look great, but must have been made on worn tooling because the nozzles are full of divots and unevely drilled holes
To buy another compressor because it doesn’t have a tank is silly when u can put a tank on the avanti, just bought one, on the way is a .9liter tank. Great review
I bought my Air Compressor via Amazon and when I switched it on, wow did it vibrate, almost taking the carpet tile it was resting on off the table and it was noisy. But it only cost me just over £80 and came with the airbrush and all the fittings, same as yours. Then my next purchase was a trigger airbrush and it lasted a whole year before giving out. What do I use it for priming models and then using Vallejo Air Paint pass over it three to four times and that is it. Came with a .1 .2 and a .3 needles - so pretty happy as I still have them and they work fine.
They are on the web sight. It would work great for a full primer coverage for me. Thanks for sharing. I like to see reviews before I spend the money because I'm limited. 🙂👍
Oh I forgot to mention I've been to harbor freight here in the city of Whittier California and they did have some airbrush with compressor I think that you would just meet in my mind that's the compressor I'm going to get with that airbrush kid thank you again for being so in-depth with your review
Thanks for the great review. This is a great value for the price. I've used my cheap hardware store airbrush that's similar to this one for almost 40 years. It's been a trusted workhorse for a long time. There are some aftermarket needle and tip sets that interchange. If you're wanting to do fine lines. As well as bigger needle and tip, for heavier coverage. If you're new to this, that can save you some money. Hobby Lobby I know carries some, from Badger and Iwata.
Awesome test and review. My wife bought this for me for my birthday this year. When I get to the point of painting something....WHEN...I see what she will do for me (first timer too)!
I just got this (haven't used it yet) and I did the same thing with the quick disconnect - it went flying and I had to crawl under the desk to find it. LOL I wrapped the threads (at the compressor/hose connection and at the quick disconnet/airbrush connection) with teflon tape and didn't have any air leaks. I plan on using artist acrylic tube paints as that's what I have already. I'd love to see a video of first time setup of an airbrush station for the beginner.
I just found your videos this morning and I must say I’m very impressed and very grateful for the hard work you’ve done in making these informative videos. Thank you sir!
I just got this item and I'm going to test it . The compressor is Quieter then expected thank you for the review. I am just restarting my model making and this is what I needed to see .
As far as sound. One is on the carpet and the other is on a resonating plastic table. I do love the tank setup. I wonder if my gigantic 5ft tall shop compressor could just be regulated to run my airbrush and not have it come on all night.
Great tutorial review on their Airbrush. I've been contemplating painting my h.o.scale flex track and whether to get this airbrush kit or just use spray paint in a can. The advantage to the airbrush is doing weathering of the sleepers as well. Thanks for sharing this video and I'm viewing it from Delmar, Delaware.
I never touched the set pressure on the compressor, you can adjust the pressure by turning the needle limiting knob on the end of the airbrush and I was able to get very fine lines by doing so . I am very impressed with this kit !!! You can basically get any size spray you want simply by fine tuning the needle limiting knob . I'm a big fan of Iwata , can't really afford the more expensive brushes and I decided to get this kit just to see how it compares to an Iwata and I was impressed. If you can't get fine details from this brush you just don't know what you're doing in my opinion.
I read reviews from other people that have been using this airbrush, and a few of them have said that the needles from the Iwata double action is compatible with the double action Avanti. I'm assuming they are referring to the Iwata's that are available at Hobby Lobby. (?)
Never on the airbrush my life I’ve gotten older and I’m getting back into the model train hobby My intended use is weathering of all the cars and some of the rail I respect your expertise from watching your videos what is something that’s good in quality that I could get even a airbrush upgrade thank you
This might seem like a dumb question but just realize that its coming from someone who has never used an airbrush to date. So here goes, I have a craftsman air compressor that I purchased for my nail gun set is it possible to use that compressor with an air gun it has like about a 3- or 4-gallon tank on it to hold air so it probably wouldn't come one very often. This is providing of course fittings are available to step down from the hose on my compressor to the hose on an airbrush. any feedback on this would be applicated.
Thanks so much for responding, the method used in the video you linked me to was exactly what I was thinking of right down to having the compressor turned on until the tank filled and then not having to worry about it after that :) @@barbatosrex9473
Thank you for you insightful video. I enjoyed seeing the professional results you have obtained (and what others can also obtain) with a modest airbrush kit. Also, the external tank is a MUST as you pointed out. Eventually a newcomer like myself would want to work up to an airbrush with the external tank. Thanks again for your video.
i had the same airbrush for about 2 years now and this year i bought similar chinese compressor, onlt i got the tank version , and it came with a bit more advanced airbrush with 3 needle/jet sizes in my case the air was leaking next to the compressor so i used teflon tape to seal the threads, quick release was working fine in my set though compared to my previous plastic tankless compressor that came with the first airbrush it is a gamechanger for the price i get my set i think they are very begginer friendly, but the more you pay the better set because money not only give you a tank, but also lower screw for air pressure release at the airbrush and few extra needle sizes i never had any airbrush training but the more i paint with it the better the trains i make gets one drawback with the gun though, it often not like acrylic paints , some of the paint stays in the nozzle cup and with time clogs the output. i might be thining them at the wrong ratio but the overal i say that is a very good airbrush my came with plastic air pump in a set for about 30-40$ and the tank compressor with a better airbrush set was about 120$ but the price might vary, my set was unbranded with the importer/shop stickers as the only indication what it was
I have this set for a year I have replaced the airbrush 5 months ago, the compressor still works good but had to get a new power switch. For a starter kit can’t beat it I put that airbrush through hell learning how to mix paints properly for a airbrushing and cleaning the airbrush have to say what I like about this airbrush it is easy to clean. Now my grandson learning how to airbrush on this set 🤷
I started out with a compressor with a tank. My first one, I didn't know you're supposed to drain the tank from moisture. I had it for a year before it rusted through and blew a hole. I had to get a new one and I've learned to drain the tank every time
Anyone know of different size needles and nozzles that fit this airbrush? I remember reading somewhere that there's a brand that most hobby stores sell that fit it but I cant remember what brand or model its for and can't find the post I read it on.

Turns out my ol' lady had a paint shaker tucked in the very back of one of her drawers....must've been a different design.... maybe its an immersion type that stirs up big cans of paint... might be why it smells funky too. great vid as always.
That is Trowa I believe. Gonna pick one of these up tomorrow. Thanks!
Adding a tank is always a great idea
@G4L4CTICNORTH Hello,
Yes it is that simple, regulator coupled to the tank and a air hose to the compressor.
Make sure there is a over pressure protection valve in the loop too, in case the regulator fails.
I don't think a regulator has this build in.
And do not forget to drain the water from the tank after every session :-)
Thank you I just picked this kit up it's the 1st time I'm gonna try Painting with just about anything. Other than I Spray can. 🤫🤯
Thanks!
You're welcome Gary, and thank you 👍
Barbatos Rex WoW I actually just bought this set/up, I agree with everything you have found here, thank you Rex!
You're welcome Shaun
I'm very new to airbrushing and picked up two air brush kits from Harbor Freight based on your reviews. The Avanti kit is on sale through 1/17/22. Picking one up tomorrow. Thanks for all you do.
The old harbor freight combo was and is to this day my airbrush. I’ve never bought another except some lesser quality brushes online but totally serviceable. I’ve greatly enjoyed it and while I’m no expert, it suits me.
Do you know what brand the replacement needles are?
@@robertjensen1438 not offhand but if I were to bet I’d look for a comparable one in design on eBay/Amazon and go from there perhaps.
@@monkeywrangler5200 Thanks for the reply.
@@robertjensen1438 if I ever find one I’ll post. HF does have a replacement parts program too, it’s on their site.
@Monkey Wrangler Thanks I appreciate that. I went ahead and ordered the airbrush set anyway. I was just trying to find a 0.2 needle, is all.
I just picked this up to get started. Timing is everything. Thanks for the private lesson.
Lol! Thats the second time I saw a fitting get launched across a room! Awesome review
And thank you for being so thorough and showing this harbor freight airbrush and air compressor 👌👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks! Very helpful. Particularly in the different examples of application. Made feel good about my purchase.
_"....I started with the original combo (AB and compressor)"_
Gee Wiz that sounded humorous! How many of us *Older* *Cats* thought he was talking about the pre 1930's Hairline fine Sprayer *Paasche* *AB* Turbo Air Gun?
Just got it for 60 bucks on Black Friday. What a mighty deal for such a capable machine.
How did the kit hold up since you posted this?
@@Boonedale Hi, I have done maybe a dozen sessions with this kit over the last 4 months, so I'm not a daily user. I have used it for priming models, terrain objects and laying down base colors. The kit continues to work properly as long as I keep the airbrush clean. I will probably pick up another airbrush for sessions where I'm priming and using airbrush paints. I'm still a pretty basic airbrush user, so the tankless compressor doesn't bother me.
@@josephpatton8869 Sounds good. I'm looking for something to make basecoating larger minis for WH40K/AoS more practical then using a normal brush.
Thanks for the great review! Just getting into airbrushing. I think this kit will do me well, and watching you will help me learn tips and tricks! Thanks again!
Trowa (I forget how to spell it) Barton. I haven't watched Gundam Wing in *decades*. So, yeah, thanks for making me feel old.
Legitamite review, thank you! I have made my purchase with your help. First timer here and will start with the Avanti.
You're welcome buddy
I just bought this three weeks ago as my first venture. Been using cans. Going to try it out on Sunday. Painting my first ver. Ka.

Great review! Just about to buy this setup and was wondering how well it worked. Thanks for taking the time to do a review!
Wow I just bought this yesterday, great timing YT recommendations
Would you recommend another compressor less noisy by any chance?

I've gotten into 40k and painting is my favorite part of the hobby. This is an airbrush I wanted to get because of the price and this is helps. Glad it works and I am looking to get it soon
Did you end up getting it?
Any idea what connector id have to purchase to address this issue?
Thanks for the video, looking at getting one of these for painting my RC drift body's and it's 40% off right now. Definitely think it's worth picking up for 60 dollars
Thank you very much for doing this review, I really appreciate it. Really shocked on how well it performed.
Yeah, this one turned out good 👍
I got one of the HF older models which is a siphon feed and I think I'm gonna pick this one up as I need one with a gravity feed cup.
Cool I've had mine for 3 months its still on the shelf, just trying to transition from rattle cans to air brushes, thank you, you made it look easy
Why are you waiting airbrushing is fun and so much better than rattle cans
I found that the leak in the connector can also be fixed by adding another rubber washer for 79 cents from ACE.
*Scotty* from *Star* *Trek* - _"Aye Captain! You're correct for sure, Mate! That'll reduce the depth on her! We'll be ready for Warp Drive in two shakes!"_
I have nightmares about products made on worn tooling
That's what I'm here for 👌
Oh I forgot to mention I've been to harbor freight here in the city of Whittier California and they did have some airbrush with compressor I think that you would just meet in my mind that's the compressor I'm going to get with that airbrush kid thank you again for being so in-depth with your review
Thanks for the vid. My tank is very close to yours, also a dual fan. Much less water in the hose line as it runs cooler....
Looking to get the HF airbrush kit and stumbled upon your video. Great video and review, seems very honest review thank you!
Thanks for the honest review. Looking at getting into painting gundum!!
That's the way to go, much more satisfying than a straight build.
Can you put a link to that quick release airbrush holder in the description, please? I can't find it anywhere I search.
This was a great review, thank you! Im trying to get into air brushing and doing model car kits. This will be great to learn on.
I just found your videos this morning and I must say I’m very impressed and very grateful for the hard work you’ve done in making these informative videos. Thank you sir!
You're welcome buddy
The knob the end of the airbrush doesn't adjust pressure, but how far your needle goes back - which adjusts how much paint flow you'll get.
I just broke down and bought this kit today. I am hoping to try this out tomorrow after my other supplies show up.
Thank you so much!!!
It's a nice set up. Another viewer just got one too and they said it's way quieter than they imagined
What an awesome set up! I am jealous of that setup
Thanks buddy, my Fortress Of Solitude 😉

Thanks so much for responding, the method used in the video you linked me to was exactly what I was thinking of right down to having the compressor turned on until the tank filled and then not having to worry about it after that :)

I’ve subscribed after watching just 2 videos. Will really help finishing my rockets.
Thank you for you insightful video. I enjoyed seeing the professional results you have obtained (and what others can also obtain) with a modest airbrush kit. Also, the external tank is a MUST as you pointed out. Eventually a newcomer like myself would want to work up to an airbrush with the external tank. Thanks again for your video.
i had the same airbrush for about 2 years now and this year i bought similar chinese compressor, onlt i got the tank version , and it came with a bit more advanced airbrush with 3 needle/jet sizes
in my case the air was leaking next to the compressor so i used teflon tape to seal the threads, quick release was working fine in my set though
compared to my previous plastic tankless compressor that came with the first airbrush it is a gamechanger
for the price i get my set i think they are very begginer friendly, but the more you pay the better set because money not only give you a tank, but also lower screw for air pressure release at the airbrush and few extra needle sizes
i never had any airbrush training but the more i paint with it the better the trains i make gets
one drawback with the gun though, it often not like acrylic paints , some of the paint stays in the nozzle cup and with time clogs the output. i might be thining them at the wrong ratio but the overal i say that is a very good airbrush
my came with plastic air pump in a set for about 30-40$ and the tank compressor with a better airbrush set was about 120$ but the price might vary, my set was unbranded with the importer/shop stickers as the only indication what it was
I saw this and went out and bought it , not bad ......great equipment for this hobby. Thank you please make more.
I had to get a new one and I've learned to drain the tank every time
I can't appreciate this review video enough this will definitely do what I need it to do for sure!
Anyone know of different size needles and nozzles that fit this airbrush? I remember reading somewhere that there's a brand that most hobby stores sell that fit it but I cant remember what brand or model its for and can't find the post I read it on.
