Another thing about this game that you might've missed out because you just finished it is that the post game is hands-down the best in the series. I don't wanna spoil anything (since it's THAT good) but they add like 50 extra missions, bring back some cool things from sonic's past and make use of previously under-utilised areas you never really got to see in the story. Truly based game

I remember when i was like, 5 or 6, I was a big sonic fan and brought sonic and the secret rings over to a friends house and the first thing they asked was "Where's his sword?"
It wasnt until a couple years later I got black knight so me and my brother had no idea what he was talking about, but just goes to show that it really was so natural that kids thought it was just a sonic thing
the resurgence of these storybook games show's how many fans are now willing to have a third installment after a long ass time

I 100 percented this game recently and I have to say it's amazing when you're going through the story and you see all of the effort put into the music, fanservice, and overall aesthetic of the game and they REALLY wanted to make the storybook duology go out with a bang. The other playable characters add their own flavor to it all to top it all off. I can't say I can have the same amount of appreciation when trying to complete the gallery/treasury but the game's overall strengths pushed me to finally finish it. Great video! The edits were on point‼
Games aren't made like this anymore, with interesting ideas and styles. Every game now is pretty much the same. Take a game and you can mod it to feel like another. We need more games like this!
Agreed. Ever realize how so many games these days feel like they're the same thing, at least in the gameplay and looks department? They're all pretty much using the same engines. Unreal mostly. Takes a lot of identity out of the games, big shame.

Literally the only negative things I have to say about this game are:
1. motion controls make it a pain to play (but Dolphin fixes that)
2. It’s not my preferred gameplay formula (but they definitely made good use of it and I wouldn’t even mind it returning without motion controls someday!)

Man I thought I was the only one who liked this game, it is criminally underrated, it is fun, cool, dynamic, literally the definition of sonic, alright the sword can be gimmicky at times but IT IS SO FRICKING COOL DAMMIT, it is my favorite sonic game, not the best game, but my personal favorite as it is the one I had the most fun with and one that I always have fun replaying, I won't even talk about the music because is so good that it can't even be described in simple words. Btw amazing video! I love your take on the game and the editing is spot on, good job!

The storybook games have some of the best art direction, music, and writing in the series, and an on-rails Sonic game in the style of these games could be so phenomenal. However, for my money, I don’t think either of these games really “nails” it for me. Secret Rings only gets to its sweet spot when you get to around level 40-level 60, which is really far into the game. But if you use skills from even higher levels it feels completely out of control. Black Knight, for me at least, doesn’t quite have that sweet spot that Secret Rings has, as this on-rails formula works best when you can just dash forward at high speeds, dodging the obstacles and getting that perfect run, but Black Knight has just enemies every step of the way to fight. Fighting the enemies can be fun, but I feel like that sort of combat would work better in a Sonic game that isn’t on-rails. Black Knight does have the benefit of being controlled with an analog stick, thus making the basic movement feel much smoother and overall better than Secret Rings tho.
The problem both of these games share is the fact that there are times where the game makes you stop and walk backwards to either fight enemies, hit switches to open doors, etc. When all the best on rails experiences never really stop your forward momentum, and only slow you down or make you go back when you mess up or die.
I love both of these games, but if they had made a third game that finally cut all the issues with both of the previous games, then it could genuinely be a PEAK experience. Unfortunately, Sonic Team drop an idea forever of it isn’t working (or even if it worked pretty well), so it’s likely we will never see another on-rails Sonic title.

Amazing video dude! This game is so incredibly underrated. I was like 8 whenI first saw this game on amazon and I was like “the heck is this I need it” and immediately asked my parents to get it for me for christmas. Ever since I first played this game I’ve loved it. I honestly hate the on-rails style, but this game pulls it off so masterfully well that it’s in my top 10 games, and easily in my top 5 favorite sonic games!

I've always adored Black Knight. The "on rails" criticism never made sense to me because the levels generally aren't made to be backtracked in anyway. In fact, the level design is very similar to games such as Sonic Adventure 2 or Sonic Unleashed, games in which turning around and going back to an earlier point in the level isn't really a thing you do much if at all. Because it's not a thing that was needed before, it's odd to me to complain about it not being included here.
Sonic's characterization in the game is a consistent source of praise, and I somewhat agree with this. It was my favorite interpretation of the character for well over a decade. However, I've started feeling like in a way Black Knight Sonic and consequentially much of Sonic's characterization since including in the IDW comics and Frontiers are actually more of an "Anti-Sonic". Back in the 90's and early 2000's, Sonic in the games was deliberately portrayed as any angsty rebel doing things because he has the freedom to do them, unbound and unconcerned with chains such as justice or morality. The fact his actions were generally morally justified was a bonus that enabled him, his main goal was to just do whatever he thought was fun. He was an adventurer who went wherever the wind and his own whim took him and ruined Eggman's plans for laughs.
After Sonic 06, his characterization began to change though. Sonic stopped being an angsty rebel and started being a hero of justice. A knight in shining armor devoid of character flaws. His ego was replaced with a gentle kindness towards others and his fun loving attitude was replaced with a moral obligation to do the right thing. Black Knight takes this literally, making him into an actual Knight in shining armor. He has become the very antithesis of who he was half a decade prior. On the DnD spectrum, you could say he went from Chaotic Good to Lawful Good.
Recent characterizations of Sonic as a character have been opting for Black Knight's version of the character as the return to form to build up from after the atrocity that was mostly everything from Colors to Forces, which leaves me feeling somewhat anxious that we might never see his original personality ever again.
I'm not entirely sure myself, but from what I've heard that characterization you're talking about that "started in 06" actually is roughly Sonic's original character in the intended Japanese interpretation. It's worth noting how all the Western localization of Sonic games from the start completely changed like, well, everything, including what characters were supposed to be like and the actual lore of the world and all. I've heard that the characterization of 06, Unleashed, Black Knight, etc., is a more accurate characterization of Sonic to the original intention of the Japanese genesis titles. But again, I could be wrong because I've just heard that.
@@legoboy7107 There's probably a nugget of truth to what you are saying, but I don't think it's the whole story. For instance, take the scene from the beginning of SA2 in which Sonic leaps out of a helicopter straight into a police chase. Even without dialogue, this scene is establishing something crucial about Sonic's core character. Sonic is showing a blatant disregard and disrespect towards authority, all just because he got bored.
If we take Sonic as he is portrayed in Secret Rings, Black Knight, the IDW comics, or Frontiers, it's nearly impossible to imagine him doing something like this. He's not the kind of guy who would risk being branded as a criminal just for a moment of fun. He cares far too much about what others think about him, and even berates himself when he does something he knows he will be criticized for later. SA2 Sonic blatantly does not care about how others think about him, he has no such insecurity. Even back in CD, if you left him waiting on you for too long he'd just straight up leave, giving you a game over.
It seems clear to me that SEGA's been continually trying to reimagine Sonic not only as a character but as a series on a rather regular basis. Every 5-10 years they seem compelled to change things around to appeal to a new demographic.
I would agree but I thought I would jump in and say Black Knight Sonic would for sure not mind being labeled as a bad guy, he actually says it, “Guess I can't be the hero every time.” With the other examples, I still kinda see your point, but not for Black Knight Sonic.
@@GDubA Black Knight Sonic was also written by the exact same writer behind SA2 if I'm not mistaken, right? So if Black Knight Sonic seems different that might just be accidental coincidence.
@@GDubA Black Knight Sonic disregards chivalry, not heroics in general. His big defining moment in that game is when all seems hopeless against Merlina's power. and the other knights are insisting that there's no dishonor in fleeing for his life in the face of such hopeless odds. Sonic responds "It was never about chivalry for me... I just gotta do what I gotta do, that's all!". This results in Sonic being deemed worthy of wielding the sword Excalibur.
Effectively, what Black Knight Sonic stands for is ultimate selfless justice. It's not that he doesn't mind being labeled as the bad guy, but rather that he believes the ends justify the means.
SA2 Sonic is distinctly the antithesis of this mindset. He's not in it for justice or to do the right thing or anything, he's in it for the thrill. He craves adventure and hates being stuck in one place for too long. He's defined by the freedom of ending up wherever whim takes him. While both Sonic's would put their neck on the line to rescue a friend, Black Knight Sonic would do it purely out of the goodness in his heart while SA2 Sonic does it for the thrill of adventure. There's a selfishness lining his selfless actions that gives him nuance as a character.

I love the simple story of this game and my dream game/ story is kinda based off of this. or at least the themes are. although the gameplay from this game is certainly not my thing and is my biggest flaw with this game. but i do like the eternal systems even if there aren't really noticeable like the morality system with the townsfolk.

Pure art is a bit of an exaggeration. Some gameplay elements carried over from Secret Rings still need some work, the story while admittedly good has an absolutely terrible and very depressing ending all because Sonic is being selfish, extra playable characters aren't as different as they needed to be, etc etc. But Black Knight is still a great game with a lot of fun gameplay, chock full of content, 95% great story, and kickass music.
I mean, Sonic isn't really being selfish. The game's script (perhaps its translation?) Doesn't really do what's actually happening justice. Basically, if Merlina got her way, the legend would be frozen in time, and nothing would ever grow or progress. It would drive the kingdom's citizens insane after a few years of basically reliving the same day or week over and over again.

Okay. Here’s my hot take. Let me tell you why it’s bad and because it’s my opinion, don’t say shit about “You’re wrong😭🤬”
Okay let me break it down.
1. Story- The story itself is great. You follow Sonic along a retelling of the Knights of the Round Table and King Arthur but you have Sonic slapped on the box art. It was fine so I’ll give it an 8/10.
The gameplay- Sonic has a sword. What more needs to be said? Well why the hell is it unresponsive half the time? Why is he so slow in the beginning? I don’t wanna work for the game to be playable. The soul surge mechanic is a cool mechanic. I like it but it’s not.. memorable. I’ll give gameplay a 4/10.
The score: What do I need to say? It’s a Sonic game. 10/10 bangers.
The level design- The designs are well created and each zone captivates the essence of a medieval piece which I greatly appreciate. However, the enemies are infuriating as all hell. 7/10.
The bosses: You fight Blaze, Knuck.. Excuse me. Percival, Gawain and Lancelot, King Arthur (The Corrupted Black Knight) and then Merlina. The fights itself are engaging but my god is it infuriating just waggling the Wii-mote trying to get lucky in beating each boss. 3/10. I think I touched on everything necessary.
I understand how people could enjoy waggling the Wii remote for hours on end in hopes to feel some sort of accomplishment.. I just don’t feel that way with this game. As much as I love Sonic and his franchise, in no way should this be seen as a work of art.
Overall Opinion: Play it. Or don’t. 6 1/2 / 10
