  • Wet Compass & Repair Kit - Grumman Style: Today we look at the compass repair kit and where the pieces go in the wet compass. Kits are available from Aircraft Spruce and others and so is the Compass Fluid. NOTE, only an instrument shop can rebuild a compass. Video 1,269 in the Hit Parade.

8:24 to 8:25 magic. That's the only reason I watched the video. My magnetic compass wasn't coming apart because the previous owner decided to GLUE it back together. So glad I bought and opened the rebuild kit, right? Now I'm shopping for a new compass.

Not for the faint of heart but if you take you time with a properly maintained one.

To get the back off: after taking out the 4 screws, use a utility knife blade and gently work the sharp edge between the rubber diaphragm and the metal housing, don’t put more than a 1/4 inch of the blade into the seam. Just enough to create a gap. Cut along the diaphragm and work around the circumference. Go around a couple of times with increasing gap every pass.
After getting the back cover off, remove the screws on the front and the hardware. To get the glass off, use a wooden dowel to push the glass from inside, using now open back as an access point. An oval shaped, unsharpened carpenter pensil works really well as a pusher, or use two for even pressure. Hold the housing with glass pointed up with one end of the dowel or pencil resting on inside glass corner and the other end resting on the table. Gently press down on the housing and the glass should start to separate. Move the dowel to opposite corner and the glass should pop off. Do not try to pry the glass off the front with a flat head or similar.
Remove any old seal material careful with a razor blade or something like green brillo pad. Clean the inside with brake cleaner if any debris fell in before installing any gaskets. Hope this helps.

Good to know, sometimes they can be a pain. Not for the home pilot to try.

Ahh yes, compass swings. As an ex Instrument fitter I can tell you they are the subject of many flight crew complaints. I think the radar altimeter got the worst complaints and death threats... lol
