I worked in a factory that had 6" dia cardboard cores from paper rolls about 2ft long as waste and I made log style bird houses of different lengths. I painted them with redguard waterproofing paint. If you make them vertical instead of horizontal you can just use wooden squares as tops and bottoms, easier than cutting rounds, and some birds like a deep log type nest box. On the deep ones I glued a strip of bird wire inside so the fledglings could climb up to the opening. I have nuthatches in one of my boxes this yr. I make boxes with different hole sizes and let the birds choose the one they like best rather than all the same size holes. I usually screw them to a tree so they are solid and some have a twig for a perch, some no perch, hanging a variety will show you what the birds prefer, I find birds will pick the smallest hole they can fit through eliminating larger predators 😊 .
Zack, I made the same stile bird houses 2 years ago. For a perch I used a skeleton key. and same as you I used 4" pvc pipe. But for the back of the bird house I used a 4" knock out plug. I got from the big box stores. Did not glue it in, that way I can pull the back of and clean out the old birds nest. and I get lots of birds in my bird houses every year. and my birds like the gaudy colors.

Cool idea. Two things you need to reference: 1. Entrance holes must be specific size for specific bird. Example is blue birds require a very small hole otherwise larger birds will invade the bluebird's nest and destroy the eggs/baby birds. 2. Birds do not like the odor of paint such as that you are using and it can be unhealthy for them.

You need to hang it with two attachments on the house- one towards the front and the second to the rear to insure stability when a nest is built or the parent sits on the peg.
What kind of bird will live in a cavity like that with anunderstanding entrance hole that big? There are a lot of different kinds of birds that will move into a 4"x4" cavity had you made it vertical instead. I think at a depth of 9" (?) chickadees and nuthatches will move in, as long as the entrance hole is 1-1/8"Ø and 7" above floor. Keep all dimensions same but make entrance 1-1/4"Ø and titmice will move in. It also depends on how high you hang it off the ground and no perch. The 3 birds I mentioned like to live about 15' above ground. We have 2 kinds of chichadees here. They keep from cross breeding because they live on 2 different elevations. Those hollow bones of theirs must act as barometers and altimeters or something. ..anyway, cut the cavety down to 6" , keep the entrance at 1-1/4", 4" above floor and wrens will at least start to build a nest but in most cases, if it's hung right and made right, they'll move in too. The male wren will make a few nests in a few places and the female will decide on which one to move into. They only live like 5 - 8 feet off the ground. Some birds will live in houses, some on shelves but most won't live in either. Bird feeders are what you need to make and fill with good bird too (not that 100% millet crap they sell at walmart and target.) can't go wrong with sunflower seeds, cracked corn, cracked peanuts, safflower(?) seeds (the pure black sunflower seeds). Oh, another tip about getting birds to move into your bird houses is to fill them with sawdust and wood chips so the bird thinks its doing the work of making the house. Whatever they don't remove will serve as insulation. I'm going from memory on all the dimensions. I believe the farmers almanac has all the info in it. I'm pretty sure that's where I got it butI that was pre world wide web and Google. I'm sure it's all readily available info nowadays .
Nice idea on the PVC birdhouse. I add large stainless steel washers to prevent the big birds from pecking away at the opening and getting in through the enlarged opening. BTW - nice meeting you at the post woodworking show get-together last week. -Alex
These are great! I have two questions, though: 1 - I've always read that you never put a perch on a birdhouse. If the bird is the right size for the house, they don't need it, and a perch gives a predatory bird something to hang on while they raid the nest 2 - Your balance point - it's no longer balanced once the bird makes its nest inside. What prevents the house from tipping? Thank you for the wonderful idea. I need to make some of these!
1 - I think we talk about hole sizes in my other bird house video. You size the hole for the target bird species. These holes are to small for predator birds, so the perch doesn't really matter. This is a big debate where the divide is about 50/50. To perch or not to perch, that is the question... :-P Besides, I think it looks nicer on there :-D 2 - The houses are short enough that they don't tip much when hanging. Innovative idea... But hanging key at centre have a pointed tip (inside top of pipe,which is just in front of bird entry hole), it may harmful for MOM bird...and if this nest is shacking, what happend to egg / chicks...it should be firmly fixed with cage,then only bird select this nest for laying egg... Anyway,idea is innovative but need to modify... Best luck for more improvements...

Also when a bird makes a nest in it, it will tip according to where the nest and birds are. Might tip opening down and spill out the content of the nest or nose up allowing water to enter. Really need two points of support. Different birds require different holes and inside areas. He needs to do a little more research.

I Nice project but I'd like to make a couple suggestions. To mark the position of the center of the 3/4 in. plywood front (if you have a combination square) measure the distance the back edge to where you want your countersunk screws and set the blade of the square to that distance. Then you place the anvil (wide part of square) against the back edge and mark the end of the blade for screw location. Then retract the blade 3/8 inch and use the blade inside to hold the front in place and START a couple screws 3 or 4 turns. That will stop the insert from twisting then tighten the screws. I would replace one of those screws in the front and back plywood with screw eyes at each end and top dead center instead of trying to balance the house. It would then remain "level" and more stable when the birds move around inside it and I believe the birds would abandon it if it tips too far. And finally the inside of the front should not be sanded smooth. Depending on the size of the fledglings and the entry height, the young birds MAY need to climb the "wall" to get to the hole and a smooth surface could make it impossible. Some have used old window screen or sheet rock sanding pieces stapled to the backside of the front to make very rough surface. Remember that birds are ungrateful tenants and will mess up the house as soon as they move in.

I have a couple of mfr'd wood bird houses and the birds just avoid them. Were you able to attract birds with your pvc house? Also,, do birds prefer houses that are more stationary then those that swing? How does one determine what size hole should be used?
The bird houses can be attached to a post or fence by removing the back, screwing in place and then placing the house onto the back and using the side screws to keep it in place. The fish and wildlife department for your area often have sizes for your local birds. Thanks for watching!
I tried the hole cutter you had, (scary), but wasn't happy with the blanks it was giving me. I found that a 4-1/8 hole saw gives you a perfect blank. Remove the centering drill, brace and clamp your wood, start slow and you got it.
I like this idea, But what I do not like is the eye screw you put in the top.. The sharp point sticks through that PVC and the bird can get hurt from that.. Would have to use different hardware

Needs way smaller hole. Most birds wouldn't like their eggs rolling all over because of a swinging house. Also a perch is just going to allow predators too hang on and kill the babies or eggs.

At least LumberZack took the time to make a video and explain what he was doing. I've read many of the comments telling him what he did wrong. Why don't those of you that have a better way POST A VIDEO of the correct way to make a bird house so the rest of us can do it correctly.
Getting the paint to stick is why I do the sanding on the outside of the pipe. It creates a surface for the paint to bite into. Two years out in the weather full time and they still look great!Thanks for watching :)

You should actually watch the video before registering a complaint. I see that you didn't even register 1 minute of watch time. The only music in the ENTIRE video is in the intro and end credits. And the intro music sequence is quite clever as it is in each of my videos, thank you very much.
Building a bird house is fun but this video is not how to do it. Bird houses need natural wood not PVC (heat build up may kill occupants) a door or access to clean them, drain holes, adequate ventilation to avoid overheating, never use perches, they invite predators, always add a predator block over the access hole. Always go to a reputable birding site to get correct, safe plans that are good for the birds that may use it. Building a box with a hole is not a bird house. You Tube is great but DYI people with little background can easily follow bad advice. I can see you have skills, use them correctly to make safe homes for birds.

Hi Scott, it called a circle cutter. I either bought it at Menards or Harbor Freight years ago. It's a 2 blade version and presently only Harbor Freight has one on their website. HF part numbers are: 69063 & 68117, though I cannot tell any differences between the 2.

Use 2 eye screws so the entrance hole is always facing the same way. With just one eye screw the house will be in a constant state of rotation.

Entrance hole is too big. Perch is not needed. Needs drainage holes and ventilation holes. Otherwise good looking house.

I have my doubts the paint will last if it wasn't primed.
Getting the paint to stick is why I do the sanding on the outside of the pipe. It creates a surface for the paint to bite into.

You should actually watch the video before registering a complaint. I see that you didn't even register 1 minute of watch time. The only music in the ENTIRE video is in the intro and end credits. And the intro music sequence is quite clever as it is in each of my videos, thank you very much.

Building a bird house is fun but this video is not how to do it. Bird houses need natural wood not PVC (heat build up may kill occupants) a door or access to clean them, drain holes, adequate ventilation to avoid overheating, never use perches, they invite predators, always add a predator block over the access hole. Always go to a reputable birding site to get correct, safe plans that are good for the birds that may use it. Building a box with a hole is not a bird house. You Tube is great but DYI people with little background can easily follow bad advice. I can see you have skills, use them correctly to make safe homes for birds.

Hi Scott, it called a circle cutter. I either bought it at Menards or Harbor Freight years ago. It's a 2 blade version and presently only Harbor Freight has one on their website. HF part numbers are: 69063 & 68117, though I cannot tell any differences between the 2.
