I saw Kochy play over here several times with the fender roadshow, never fails to surprise, with his GR8 playing and GR8 sense of humour.....who's a lucky boy then.......!!
I bought one of these lovely guitars. There are seven pickup combinations as the bottom volume knob relates to the middle pickup and the top one controls the neck and bridge pickup volumes together. So you can have (1) Neck+Middle (2) All three (3) Middle+Bridge (4) Neck (5) Middle+Bridge (6) Bridge (6) Middle. 4 to 6 are with the bottom volume (middle p/up) off, 7 is with the top volume (mid and bridge p/ups) off. Complicated eh?
I own one of these. The middle pickup is always hot, but can be blended or turned completely off by using the volume knob. The top volume/tone knobs are connected to both the bridge and neck pups, and the bottom knobs are vol/tone for the middle pickup. Turning it all the way down turns it off. I bought mine years ago when they were first released, so the fretboard is ebony. I have no idea what they're using these days.
On the issue of modding a PF Les Paul, I've noticed that Gibson now have a toggle switch that has a pot attached to it. The pot control is on the outer ring of the toggle switch. They are fitted to the gawd awful Firebird X guitars, but they'd be mighty handy adding an extra discreet pot to a 3 pickup, Les Paul Custom like the Peter Frampton signature model..
Not much chance I know of Greg or the producers reading this, but Frampton wiring, which is what this axe sports, is slightly different from how Greg described. Everything he said about the middle pickup always being on is true: however the guitar has three independent volumes and one master tone, so you can roll that middle pickup in and out of all three typical switching positions, and blend it in as you please. So in the middle position you have the potential of getting all three pickups on at once... But you can roll out the bridge and the neck so you're just playing the middle alone. And so on and so forth in every position on the guitar so that every pickup is available to you.
Have not a faintest idea how any dislikes have been posted. This instrument seems like Gibson should be busy building in (#'s) ??? And what about increasing payment lengths as well. Wildwood got any idea? Don't need to bother creating additional finishes either! thanks G. Koch superbly played P.S. please bend our ears much more! Jim
I figure it's competing music stores, ticked off previous customers or Justin Bieber fans misdirected here. I can't think of a single reason to give Gregg a thumbs down, even on a rare off day.
Yeah, I thought that was the way. Had a strat like that but it got pinched. If I ever get a 3 pu Les Paul, middle pu will have it's own vol and tone. Or better still each pu has its own vol and tone with a master vol. Would need to use stacked concentric pots, hard to find in ausie, but would be awesome if wired this way.
I have a common question I hope you guys can help me with! Do any of you find that your pick hits the Middle pickup as you play? I really want to pick one of these up before they are no longer made, but that is certainly a consideration of mine. Thank you! :)
I tried one at a guitar store in nyc. Found my pick hitting middle pick up alot. Didn't buy it because of that issue. Bought similar gibson black custom with standard 2 pick ups instead. Great guitar but they are known for the G and D string going out of tune alot because of the bend in the neck. Research this issue before you buy one. Or you can buy a Heritage Guitar, almost the same as Gibson without that bent head stock issue.
Correction, not bend in neck, bend on head stock. Gibson have a angle on headstock that causes the g and d string to bind up on the nut. Some people use lubricant to prevent this.
A little befuddled, to me, you are describing a basic '57 LP 3 PU Custom, which most are as you've said, middle always on. But Peter's never was 3 PU to start, it was a '54 2 PU and the middle was added by the gentlemen who eventually just gave it to him at The Fillmore West, so basically like a 57, but the wiring was weird right from the start, as Peter in his video, "Private Gear Tour: Peter Frampton" he says the M PU has it's own vol and tone, never is always on as is a reg 3 PU Custom.
never liked the way 3-pup Gibsons are wired. that middle HB gets in the way of some very needed tones wired like that. this takes nothing away from Koch! Koch is a BEAST! jus say'n
That is some of the best playing I've seen in a long time.

Plug that baby into an analog chorus and an EL84 amp and let's hear that famed "Frampton Comes Alive" outdoor guitar solo. :)
Great guitarist

Don't know what was better the guitar or the playing

Not Fair - Koch could play a spatula and make it sing ;)
a "Peter Frampton Les Paul" with a Richlite board...
does anyone know its exact neck profile feature? :O
You and I wish :)
Someone's been listening to Chet Atkins
Enough guitars, please demo some of those delicious amps :-)
Dumbass... Amps don't make music.
Koch Comes Alive!
Mofo is a Beast!!!

comment also takes nothing away from Peter Frampton who made incredible music with what he had at that time almost 50 years ago.
