- When it comes to big horse power and torque, the kind that you really want when driving something like a Jeep JT Gladiator outfitted with EVO trailing arms and double throw down system over big whoops, nothing short of a V8 will give it to you. And, while a HEMI swap is the first thing that comes to most peoples minds, there is another option coming soon for the Wrangler JL and JT Gladiator and that is, a Motech Gen V LT V8! What differentiates the LT from everything else? First let's be honest everything we see here is old technology, very old technology. By the end of World War II the internal combustion engine had pretty much reached its pinnacle. Overhead cams, multi valves, direct injection.... its s all been done, probably before most of us were born. Google the Rolls-Royce Cressy engine or even the good old Allison V12 you will be amazed at the technology in those engines, they make our engines look like toys.
The roots of the modern Hemi engine really lie in Chrysler's attempt at an aircraft engine that was fitted to the later iterations of the P-47 Thunderbolt. The engine proved powerful and could push the Thunderbolt over 500 miles an hour, but once the jet engine came onto the scene the internal combustion engines were old news. I always thought Thunderbolt would make a better name for a Challenger or Charger than Hellcat or Demon.
The LT engine runs a structural oil pan which supports a 6 bolt cross bolted main cap. Aluminum heads and block mean lighter weight and better cooling, although this has been true since the early LS from the late 90s.
Potential energy, that's where it's at. An LT1 runs 11.5 to 1 compression in a 6.2 l engine. The modern Hemi, which really isn't a true Hemi any longer due to production costs and other factors has 10.9 to 1 compression.
GM has applied the technology required to allow an 11.5:1 engine to run on pump gas. The combination of direct injection and continuous variable valve timing allows GM to do this; neither the LS or Hemi has CVVT.
What you end up with is an engine that has tremendous power, especially torque at lower RPM; this is the reason the LT 5.3 can run with the larger engines, especially when equipped with the 10-speed transmission. BTW the 10-speed transmission was developed in conjunction with other manufacturers like Ford, Honda and Toyota.
Unlike an LS3 or Hemi the LT idles at very low RPM and has tremendous torque off idle, I like to say it's halfway to a diesel with its higher compression and maximized cylinder pressure. We have run the 6.2 LT's against Hemi's and LS3's with higher horsepower ratings but more often than not the LT wins.
The new inline 6 twin turbo looks very promising but it is really nothing new. I'm a big fan of the inline 6 and it appears Chrysler has taken a look at the BMW 3 l M series engine. That's not a bad thing they tout V8 performance with better economy and emissions. Smaller displacement engines with forced induction have often attempted to replace the good old V8, like the Ford Ecoboost engine.
I drive about a thousand miles a week in Wranglers with engines from the anemic 3.8 all the way up to LT'4's and various Hemi's. Without question the LT's have the best drivability, fuel efficiency and transmissions IMO.
The day will come when the large displacement V8s will be outclassed by the smaller displacement supercharged engines and electric motors. But for now if you have a large heavy vehicle with a lot of drag it's hard to beat the overhead valve American V8 regardless of manufacturer.

@@frank39490 I love my 8.1ltr engine drivetrain in my 2004 3/4ton, Yukon XL. I might do something crazy one day. I saw on Autotrader once someone selling a rust bucket early 2000's, Yukon XL 2500 from the salty road states with this drivetrain for $3000. That drivetrain would work great swapped into my 1989 Dodge 4x4 project.

I love when things are done well and complete. Keeping as much of the OEM assembly is key to good reliability, so this is probably is a great option for those who cant find a 392.
Being that the 392 is being discontinued, I think there will be a lot of guys who will find this to be an attractive option.
@@Oilngld Umm, not just the 392 but HEMI as a whole for Dodge and RAM. A lot of it has to do with new EPA standards coming in 2024 but most of it is from Jeep trying to stay ahead of it and make 70% of their line up electrified by then. This is all directly from Stellantis.

@@Oilngld there's a difference between infringing on a constitutional right and "luxury". The ATF is getting spanked because they are (and have been) infringing on constitutional rights. The EPA however can do whatever they want, because owning a vehicle is a luxury, not a right unfortunately.
I've always preferred the LS, LT over the Hemi. I can't wait to see one in your JT.

@@wayalifehow dependable and reliable has your jeep been with the Chevy engine swap? Any electronics issues, codes popping up? And can you have a manual transmission with the Chevy engine swap?
Not gonna lie, soon after we got this engine installed, we did have problems and we documented it in one of our videos. However, we later found that it was just a chaffed wire causing the problems and once that got fixed, we haven't had any more issues. Been really happy with it since.@@Groovy-z3x

Great video! You always have great content that keeps me interested. 22 years ago when I was 19 years old I did a GM fuel injected motor swap in my 84 CJ7. This was before LS swap became a cliche. just recently we bought that same Jeep back and my son and I are fixing it up for his first vehicle. We bought a 2022 JLU for my wife this past summer. After owning a Yukon Denali with the 6.2, I thought it would be amazing to have the 6.2 in the JL. I can not wait to follow your build. Thumbs up Eddie!!

I agree with Kalan, I definitely think an LT4 would be good for a big build like your JT. I’m going to be swapping in just a basic 6.0 LS for my XJ but it’s 4300lbs with me in it.
Oh yeah, on an XJ, 6.0 LS is all you really need. And yes, I think an LT4 is in the works for us :)

8L is better? LOLOL. What color bottle of trans fluid are you using this week? Grey, White, Black etc.... The 8L is really not that great at all. So much more aftermarket support for 8HP and 10R/L platforms

You know it's expensive when they don't even mention price. But so is a Rubicon 392.
I paid $28k for a 6.1 Hemi swap, with 545rfe in my LJ in 2006. N
However I found, no comparison to the performance of a factory designed 6.4. The 392 Rubicon has more of a performance sports car feel.
I don't doubt that a LS4 with super charger at 650 hp would be a fun way to go.
I always hoped that Jeep would release a Wrangler Rubicon with Hellcat engine. But when I realized that 2023 was most likely the last year for the 392, I bought one. No regrets, so much fun. Smiles per gallon.
Oh yeah, love our 392! As far as price goes, you're right in the ballpark.

Isn't the main reason people go with a Hemi because of emissions issues with LS swaps? My understanding was that you can't legally run an LS in a jeep that's later than a 2015 because after that year, GM has not produced a "passenger vehicle" with an LS. They put it in trucks, but that doesn't count as a "passenger vehicle." Emissions guidelines say the swapped engine has to be "like or the same" as the original, so you can't swap a non passenger vehicle engine into a passenger vehicle. Maybe I'm wrong and GM has started selling this engine in something that's a passenger vehicle, but if not I don't think it would ever pass emissions.
Actually, the main people go with a HEMI is because they're fanboys of Chrysler and think that you need to stay within family to be cool. Well, that and the idea that somehow, there will be less problems being that the motor and Jeep computer speak the same language. Trust me, you can still have emission issues even with a HEMI and have multiple personal friends who've had to deal with this. That said, Motech is the only shop that has California executive order swaps and theirs pass smog. You should contact them for more information.
@@wayalife that is good to know and great to have options. JSS has their EO for their HEMI swaps and I thought all LS/LT swaps needed to go to a smog ref... great that Motech is another option
when my 3.8 finally dies Motech will be on my short list becuase of their work to get SMOG/CARB issues taken care of
Americas Most Wanted to doing the Hemi, Demon, Hellaphant conversions and they went through all the details to make a smooth swap.

Not sure why a Rubicon 6-speed would be a dream come true. The new 8-speed would be better in my opinion but then, they've been doing 8 and 10 speeds for a while now.

I always thought the 5.3 would be the perfect engine for the JL JT . After all Jeep has used the Buick 350 v8, 255 V6, 2.8 v6, 2.5 iron Duke . all GM engines . even tho the last two were dud s . lol . oh and i believe the "real" zf trans is superior .

Excited to see the results. A bit too much bashing of the HEMI for no good reason though. Got any beef with AMW? The HEMI is a relatively cheap and reliable option - mines been treading lightly for 2 years now in my JT. MPGs also correlate more with your weight and tire size as you will notice. So with your engine choice you going to add an AUX tank ? That would really interesting to see integrated with an engine swap. Good luck !!!
LOL - not sure who was bashing HEMIs or anyone who installs them. Certainly, I love them and my 392. They are old in design and Stellantis has cancelled them where as GM has been and is still developing new V8 and with modern technology. That's just a fact. HEMI's are also bigger and heavier and from personal experience, all the ones I've seen have all had overheating issues, especially out in the desert. Curious on the exhaust system you are going to use in terms of mufflers and resonators and if there will be any drone. With your chop and the EVO setup (killer setup) there’s not much space :) also will remain street legal emissions wise ? HEMI defo old but gold ha ha
On our JK, we're running a Magaflow muffler and that's it. We love the sound it puts out but it might be on the loud side for some. As far as emissions go, we live in a part of Nevada that doesn't have smog laws so it's not an issue for us.

Not just motech , but I see it with other LS swaps, they need to get ride of the corvette covers. Someone need to make some Jeep ones
The covers are used to help with clearance in a Wrangler. But, it would be nice to see different covers.

The tech doesn’t seem to think too highly of any Mopar performance engines. Straight to the GM products.
In the early days we did a few Hemi swaps, we always preffered the GM powertrains, they cool much better, and the GM transmissions are definetly light years ahead of the mopar transmissions. The hemi platform itself hasnt really changed, or advanced like the GM engines have.

JLUR is what it's now being designed for but you will need a new transmission.
Maybe its just me but I don't cross breed, Put a AMW Hemi in it. I like my Vette but wouldn't put a hemi in it. So why do the same to the Jeep?

You know, like how most every GPW made during WWII was actually made by Ford or how the CJ-5, Jeepster Commando and even Gladiator all came with... wait for it... A BUICK V6 under the hood. 🤪

I understand that they are selling something but this will be expensive. Eddie, you really should think about it, is it worth the headache and CELs vs CARB legal and plug’n play with a Hemi Redeye or 6.4? Looking forward to watching the series but seems like you’re going to be the ultimate beta tester for them. First off, I love HEMI's and own a 392. Fantastic Jeep! That said, my JK is running a Motech 6.2L LT now and while I did have issues with a chaffed wire early on and highlighted it in our videos, it's been running great ever since. It is because of our experience that we're wanting to do it on our JT now. Motech really knows there stuff.
Lol you think the Hemi is cheaper? You are mistaken. The LT is significantly cheaper. And regarding your CARB legal concern, we have executive orders so we have emmisions coveredb😉

@SRT Sorbs Based on the HEMI swaps I have personally seen, I can't say that I'd be interested in one. ALL of the ones I have seen had overheating issues, required pounding in of the firewall to make fit, they are a lot heavier. Also, I live in a part of Nevada where smog isn't an issue so for me, this is a better fit. Plus, I have a 392 and so I get to have my cake and eat it too :)
Will they give a credit for the Pentastar engine?
a 392 will give you like 12mpg this thing seems more powerful and its giving you 22mpg.... thats more range than the 392 per tank.

Motech makes kits that are 50 state legal and will pass emissions.
Put a super charger on the 3.6 same horsepower and I bet that costs WAY MORE THAN $7K TO 8K. I agree about the V8 sound though.
LOL - ummm, not even close. At least, not from what I have personally seen. It IS the reason why there are so many used 3.6L engines with super chargers laying around at places like Motech.
I see that you've edited your post. The cost of installing a super charger only to replace it later with a V8 because the lack of real power you get and at all the wrong times will cost you WAY MORE than doing it right the first time.

Great video. I have a 2021 jeep jlur with a 4 inch lift and 35s. Some ppl saying jumping to 37 I need ball joints axle shafts axel reinforcements ball joins… some say nothing… what are your thoughts!
I would never pretend to know more than what "some people" say or don't say but from my personal experience, I can tell you that I've had ZERO problems running 37's on factory Rubicon JL axles. Granted, I am just a mall crawler.

It really depends on how hard you play. You may never need to upgrade your axles or at least, the housings. Ball joints wear out on any axle and you replace them as needed, just like a set of tires or brake pads. Rear shaft flanges can bend and front shafts can break and if they do, replacing them with chromoly ones is all you need to do. Just make sure that the front shafts come with full circle clips.
My only question is do I build the suspension and axles swap first
In my opinion, there's no need to upgrade to a V8 until there's a need for it and so, yes, I would say suspension and axles first.
How about a 392 vs Motech LT JL drag race?

As in, so that you can keep the 6-speed that comes on a JL? Also, Motech has done a number of swaps in 2-doors and they are badass!

Consider a 4BT 3.9L or 4.5L. It is a 4cyl version of the engine in the Ram 2500-5500's.

Unfortunately, it'll never happen. Like all the manufacturers, Jeep is going all electric.

Most LT4s are 10L80s. We will have a 10L80 in his JT

I have a 392 and love it because Jeep did a wonderful job of making it work. All the HEMI swaps that I have personally seen have had overheating problems and out in the Nevada desert, that would be a real problem for me. Also, I like how modern the LTs feel with their direct injection, higher compression and coupled with a 10 speed auto, they perform great. I should note, this is all based on first hand experience on my JK.

Calling a LS/LT new tech is like calling a sail new to a boat !!! It is a still a pushrod V8 just like the Hemi's are !!! Nothing new aged about either engine platform. Now the newer 3.0l TT from Stellantis that is new tech !!! I won't even go anywhere near his comments about the GM 8 Speed superiority as there are a list of issues with both variations 8l45e or 8l90. But I look forward to the new build and see where it goes !
LOL - I guess you missed the part where this is a Gen V LT? But yes, the new 3.0L TT should be real nice. Too bad it's not available yet and we still don't even know if it'll fit in a JT. Of course, just like anything Chrysler, it'll be locked and that's a bummer.
EDIT : I see you edited your post. While the Gen V LT isn't so much as "new tech", it is a LOT more modern than the HEMI. And, don't get me wrong, I love HEMI's and even own a 392.
@@wayalife Yeah my fat fingers get ahead of me when I posted that hence the edit !!! Me personally I like the Hemi Architecture better but then again that is my preference. Either way Nice can't wait to see it come along !!!
@@wayalifehow is there anything more modern in a lot vs hemi tho they literally have all the same stuff. Only thing A hemi doesn't have is direct injection but hemis have active intake runners so idk pretty similar tech. But still hemi has more power
@@Michael_ryan91 LOL - I get that you're a HEMI fan and that's cool, I am too. But clearly, you have never driven BOTH a HEMI and LT back to back. I have and can tell you that the LT has get up and go torque and right from idle. Also, LTs aren't locked the way HEMIs are - as in, you can tune them. Again, I am a FAN of HEMI's but not to the point where I can't look at things objectively.
@@wayalife Im not a huge hemi fan I like them but I have to say I have drivin back to back lts and hemi. I was in the market recently for a truck and drove a new Silverado 5.3 with 10speed and max tow package and a equal ram the ram felt world's quicker. Which it should have 55 more hp. After racing a buddy's Silverado I can confirm my 5.7 blows the doors off a new lt 5.3 like 3 truck lengths by 70 mph.
How much out the door
Depends on what motor you go with, what transmission, are they new or out of a crate - a lot of things to consider but ultimately, you're looking at about $25-30k
That will not give the 392 a run for its money even with those pizza cutter wheels 😂. 5.3 is Caca go with the 6.2 for sure!!
LOL - I don’t know man. I own a 392 and love it but based on personal experience, I can tell you that even this 5.3 set up the way it is would give it a run for its money. Not saying it would win in a race but it really is the real deal. That said, yes, a 6.2 LT4 is what we’re planning on doing 👍🏻

Gm 8 speed is trash lol lots of issues. Hemi is vvt also and makes more power stock for stock
LOL - umm, if you say so. Granted, we have a 10 speed in our JK with an LT and have found it to work extremely well - ZERO problems. Also, while I love HEMIs and own and love our 392, an LT4 will spank it and that's what we'll be getting in our JT.
@@wayalife wish there were videos to support that. I just know to many family members with Silverados that had failures because of afm and that garbage 8 speed. The Ford gm 10 speed does seem much better tho. Hellcat 4 the win lol.
@JL Across America Again, I can only go off of what I have personally experienced with my JK and it has a 10 speed. Hellcats are super nice but every single HEMI swap, I have personally seen, Hellcats included, have all had overheating and other issues. It is a big part of why we didn't go that route when we did a swap in our JK. But, like I said, I'm super happy with our 392 so I get to enjoy it too.

LOL - because Jeep has never has never had something like a Buick V6 under the hood of one of their iconic vehicles. You know, like a CJ-5, Gladiator or Jeepster Commando.
