  • Behind the scenes setup of a recent Live Jam video (link below) that goes over the gear connections, Ableton live (DAW) and the main mixer (Roland MX-1) setup.
    ** THIS VIDEO COVERS A LOT OF GROUND ** - so you'll expect it to be longer than usual. Some of the areas are:
    * AIRA Host - USB connections
    * MIDI setup - MIDI-IN, MIDI-OUT, MIDI-THRU
    * Audio connections to the MX-1 mixer
    * Sends and FX returns (AUX) connections with Strymon Big Sky
    * Ableton Push setup
    * Ableton Live sequencing and linking to live mixer
    * Roland MX-1 Performance mode (PC input)
    * Syncing gear together with master clock
    Stay subscribed for the next part of this series which will go over the individual synthesizers, drum machines and samplers.

    Thanks for making the video Ranzee. It is very helpful in trying to understand what signal each piece of gear sends to the mixer. I do have some of the gear you have and until this video it has been sitting idle whilst i do what i have always doen use VSTs :) I am looking forward to the next video as i hope to be able to finally figure out what goes where in my set up :)
    Very much appreciated :)

      After trying to set up here, struggle with th AUX SEND/RETURN Settings:
      I have an old effect unit, zoom 1204, I connected the stereo RCA connectors from SEND MX1 to input Jack of the zoom 1204, and output Jack from zoom 1204 into the stereo RCA connectors from RETURN MX1.
      I turned up the AUX level as per video, turned up the AUX send/return levels on the left top of the MX-1.
      The system settings of AUX send/return routing are standard to OFF. Still can't get to hear the sound with the effects of the zoom 1204. Am I missing something ? thanks for your help in advance

    Great vid and thanks for the diagram especially. I have a TR-8S and Circuit for the moment, will also be adding Roland's SE-02 soon. I use Ableton now and again but have nothing directly linked to it just yet. Do you think the MX-1 would still be a good investment, basically is it still worth the extra cost considering there does not seem to be a better mixer out there yet for the money.
    Many thanks

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  6 років тому

      Hi VimyScout. I've had my MX-1 now for quite a while - maybe 3 years. I use it everyday - and I also own other mixers. It really is a good investment. Perhaps Roland are going to make something new, but right now nobody knows, and this has stood up against the test of time. The gear you have (and about to get) is similar to mine - the only issue is that you wont be able to use the TR-8S individual outputs through the MX-1 (but you can use them together via an aggregate device). Good luck with your decision :)

    Hi Ranzee, How do you stop the flashing faders in Live Mode on the MX-1 ? It's a pain because if my tracks are idle with nothing loaded the faders flash unless i move them slightly manually. They seem to auto flash.. it's just annoying when in dark late evening at home. Thanks

      MTGP Official hi again. In short you can't, it is how it is. Did you watch the Q&A video? I covered the faders and MIDI mapping on there. I also talked about using the MX-1 in other modes i.e. mixer mode whilst using Ableton.

    Love your video, thanks for your hard work. I don't have the mx-1 but I just received the Roland TR-8S and having loads of fun. Do you have it yet? In the process of playing all my gear together, I feel the mix-1 is a great solution, would you recommend I add it? Any future videos like this are much appreciated especially since the TR-8S now has the ability to trigger and have assignable outs to Ableton. I'm still trying to get my head around the possibilities.

      Hi Daniel, thanks for the nice comments. I don't have the TR-8S but I do have have the TR-8. Yes the MX-1 would be a great addition to your setup. What other hardware do you have to connect?

    • @riojamz2553
      @riojamz2553 6 років тому

      I have the arturia minibrute 2S, which is triggered by the Tr-8s. The minibrute is patched to my eurorack modules. I also have a keystep controlling my berhringer model D. Problem is I want to play my push 2 as a sampler but I don't think the Tr-8s can work with it.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  6 років тому

      So you require a few analog audio inputs. If you use the TR8S with the MX-1, it will only take the master output of the TR8S - and you'll loose the multiple channel outs benefit via the AIRA link USB port. UNLESS you setup the MX-1 and TR8S as an aggregate device on your audio setup. Actually that might be worth persuing. The Push2 would be awesome if it could see all the tracks coming in digitally - so the aggregate device is a cool idea (ASIO4ALL on Windows). I've done a vid on aggregate devices: ua-cam.com/video/EsKm09p-yUA/v-deo.html
      Creatively speaking, you could just use the TR8S input to take a combined master output from your Eurorack gear - but that wont give you freedom on your Push2 to control individual inputs ...

    Ranz does the USB3 port on the MX-1 only power the JX-03 ? Does USB4 also power JU-06? I have my JX-03 arrived and connecting to the USB3. If I connect the JU-06 into the USB3 using my beat step pro splitter you have, how does the MX-1 identify what's on USB3? Will the JU-06 appear on the USB4 channel? You have two boutiques sharing USB3 so i'm wondering how the MX-1 knows where or they both going through to the USB3 channel?

      Hi Sentoki, I don't have 2 boutiques sharing USB 3. The diagram shows. ua-cam.com/video/so3okTgbM7c/v-deo.html This part of the video at 7:49 talks about this specifically. The JX-03 is powered by the USB 3 port, the JU-06 is powered using a USB splitter and plugged into USB 4 port. The USB splitter I'm using is an Arturia ground loop splitter - video around 8:10 explains. Check out the diagram in full here: ranzee.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/Drawing23.jpg

    This is a good video, maybe you can help me out. I have a Novation Ultranova synth and a Circuit with a Zoom 70 Reverb. I really want to add a big sky reverb to my Ultranova as well. I'm having to use all these as an Aggregate device to use them at the same time. I would like to possibly add a volca machine as well at some point and possibly a korg kaosillator. Would the MX-1 be a good fit for my setup? I'm still learning how midi works as well.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  5 років тому

      Hi Chris. The best advice I can give about mixers is to make sure you have enough inputs. If you are going for a digital mixer - there are quite a lot out there now that double up as audio interfaces - so this should alleviate your need for aggregate device setup. The MX-1 lacks in analog inputs - but if you have a lot of Roland gear - it can be OK. I'm using PreSonus mixers and hardware to do my more professional stuff - and I use the MX-1 for my jams. Hope this helps, and keep me posted on what you decided to do.

      Hi Nikola. Sorry to hear you're having issues. You have been a little vague as to the specifics of your problem - so here's some questions: Have you downloaded and installed the MX-1 USB driver from the Roland website? It uses a prioprietory USB driver (i.e. it isn't class compliant). What DAW are you using?

      @@ranzee Yes! The mixer is recognised as input-output in Ableton settings. I did set the 17/18th channel, set AUX on the mixer, power on the computer with the mixer plugged in usb, but nothing seems to work. I even turned master level to the max. I never get to see the green bars jumping from the sound in the channel aim to record. Sometimes in the preferences of Ableton, I got exclamation marks on side of the setup where you choose your input or output device

    • @ranzee

      Reboot the mac - make sure the audio interface is working - make sure you can use it as a sound card in your system preferences (not in Ableton). There's a troubleshooting guide on Roland support for the MX-1 - check that out too.
      If all else fails - contact Roland support. It sounds like it could be a number of things, and very difficult to troubleshoot here on UA-cam comments.

    thanks mate, really good tutorial!!!
    however, I'm struggeling to get my set up done... I've got the MX-1 connected via USB to the PC and the audio into my interface (need to keep that one working for the microphone and the guitar). this makes it quite difficult to find the correct setting in Ableton: preferences (audio/midi), channel routings, etc. Basically I guess I need to stay in normal mixing mode on the MX-1 for all the hardware I use (and to be able to use the not connected USB tracks for channels in Ableton). But when it comes to recording the single tracks into Ableton I get into trouble finding the correct settings & channels adjustments. Do I have to swap from MX-1 to RME interface back and forth..:!??!? I'm lost...

    Hi ranzee, like your video, pretty useful. I've a number of the devices you've got (Push 2, Korg sampler & MX-1) I've also got the JP-08 and TB-03 but so far been struggling to connect and sync everything. The Boutique gear doesn't seem to respond when connected to the usb ports of the MX-1. Do you have any suggestions on how to remedy this and what the ableton audio and midi i/o should be, it's driving me mad.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  7 років тому +1

      Hi Lee! Thanks for watching. You should be able to get both MIDI clock and audio from connecting the boutiques to the MX-1. Some possible reasons for issues:
      Power issue: Have you used a USB splitter similar to what I showed in the video? Only one of the USB ports delivers power (USB 3).
      Firmware issue: ensure you have the JP-08 and the TB-03 uptodate.
      Check out Roland support if it isn't the above.
      Ableton should be setup with the MX-1 as the audio input and output device. MIDI needs to be configured to Track, Sync and Remote on both Input and Output - plus setup the AIRA MX 1 as a control surface for both input and output.

    • @leewilbs
      @leewilbs 7 років тому

      Thanks for the swift reply. The boutiques work now for some reason must have just needed the update. I'm unable to get anything else to respond. I'm just starting simply and want the TB-03 to play with drums and other internal synths. This doesn't work. I'm either unable to hear the drums or after a lot of turning on and off of parameters the drums plays the pattern from the TB-03 and only goes into one channel of the MX-1. I want to have my Push 2 as the control surface playing and altering clips, vsts and effects with the MX-1 as the mixer/audio interface. Everything I've tried just doesn't work. It plays one instrument nothing more. I'm finding the settings in ableton especially the link midi section to be a bit of a mindfuck. Got any suggestions?

    • @leewilbs

      Hi, what is it that you require a picture of ?
      My gear list and planned set up is as follows :
      - PC laptop running latest version of Ableton (all software is upto date)
      - Push 2(clips, vsts, effects etc) Maschine (I use as a drum machine, I prefer the sounds to Ableton) & MX-1 connected via 3 of the 4 USBs
      - Korg electribe sampler 2, Input jacks 1 & 2 MX-1
      - Roland TB-03 and JP-08, any of the usb slots in the MX-1. Whichever one doesn't have batteries goes to port 3 for bus power.
      I used to have the novation 2x4 audio hub but because it only has a pair of audio inputs I needed something larger to connect extra gear. I've done music on and off for 20 years but it's always been computer based, no hardware so i'm finding the midi side of things extremely complicated.
      Thanks

    Excellent video. Super well laid out and explained. It's been a great help. Thank you. I think the MX 1 is my solution for my two electrons, my two boutiques, my Electribe EMX1 and an older Yamaha keyboard. Just to clarify, are all channels going into Ableton, allowing for individual track FX and processing to take place, and then summed to an output on the MX-1? I assume that the MX-1 then goes out to speakers/PA/Amp etc.

      Hi Crhistopher - thanks for the comments! Your question is one way you can hook this up. Some people use it this way. Others just use heaphones. It's entirely flexible in this regard. Just remember - the main output (whether digital or physical) has all the master FX - so you can only hear it that way.

      Hi Derek, there could be a number of reasons for this. Noisey FX device. Levels too hot in return channel. AUX SEND or RETURN levels too hot. Or even the motherboard on your MX-1 maybe faulty. And that's just off the top of my head. Test your FX device into another analog input on the MX-1 and see if that's noisey also. Thank you! I still have this pretty neat Roland mixer from around 1998, when they released their SP 808 (sampler, MIDI box, and Zip disk multi tracker). This mixer appears to me
    To be very obviously Roland’s precursor to the MX-1 in that it is very much performance oriented, the Roland DJ 2000 mixer. It’s got four main channels for lines or Phonos, two mic inputs, a very smart EQ section with a dedicated Sampler send / return and the Effects loop also. For that Sampler send / return, you can assign which channels would get sent to the sampler by simply pressing the buttons that correspond to those channels. There’s also a DSP effector, with some great tempo synchronized effects and a tap button to set the tempo of its on board clock. This clock has a MIDI out, and I agree with you over using the MIDI through box. So much gear that I own is lacking the MIDI outputs, and so for that reason I keep a dedicated MIDI processing unit with 4 ins (two can be merged) and 8 outs to synch everything up. This stuff can get so complicated, and fast! I love your illustration! Maybe you could post a link to a sort of graphic utility to aid in making flow charts like this, for when you’d like to experiment with other setups, or for when you add other gear to it, and when you finally get a second MX-1! Sort of a joke but sort of serious too (another guy on UA-cam owns FOUR MX-1s!! He has posted an MX-1 video that gives a lot of helpful insight as well. Thanks for sharing! Maybe do another video that shows just how fancy the data porting between the TR-8 and Ableton Live through the MX-1 really is?! And show just how that power trick works for those usb channels if you could, as I’ve run into a dead end there?! Keep it up and thanks again!

      Hi Jimmy, thanks so much for the info on the DJ 2000 mixer! The flow chart software I used was Microsoft Visio. There's been a few videos on my channel about the MX-1, including a recent live stream. I'll link you up with the playlist and hopefully that goes into further detail that you need:

    Hi - just checking out this vid very informative! Just a quick question do you have it running into monitors, speaker or amp and if so how you doing it? Thanks for the video and keep it up. Noobs like me need all the technical help we can find. Cheers Stu.

      Hi Stuart. Thanks for the nice comments. I use Yamaha H8 studio monitors - which are active (they have built-in amplifiers). They are plugged into the Main output of the mixer (MX-1).

    What’s the difference between this and a Soundcraft FX16ii mixer? New to producing and finally making the decision to get a mixer and an audio interface after. But I’m just stuck on the terms of connectivity, especially with plug ins/DAWs. Besides having 12 instruments/hardware I wouldn’t like to be switching cables back and forth to play one synth. Please help if can 🤕

    I've seen that you made a big progress overall (personally and technically) since this Video.
    Would you still recommend such a setup? (which impressed me very much)
    Searching for a DAWLes mixer and already have MC--707 Roland, Minilogue Korg, Strymon DarkSky, Korg Radias, Korg Kaossilator.
    The MX-1 appeared to me like an underdog these days, but i dont believe it is.

      Probably, some bits maybe less attractive now. I'm still using my MX-1 daily.

      Hi Colin, thanks for watching. I used a usb cable that came with my Arturia Beatstep Pro - it is called an "anti ground loop adapter" - they sell them in kits here: www.arturia.com/store/accessories/beatstepproreplacementcablekit However, I'm sure you're able to find it separately somewhere else - might just need to google around?

    Thanks ranzee. I’m trying to understand how I could integrate this into my setup. Am I right in thinking this makes my audio interface redundant? I’d like to use my interface pre-amps for two microphones. I assume that’s not possible unless I go down the path of creating an aggregate audio device? Have tried that before but found it way to unstable. Thanks.

    • @ranzee
      @ranzee  4 роки тому

      Hi Dave, yes - it can be used as either a standalone audio interface or as you said an aggregate device. Aggregate devices can be a bit of a pain tho - so you may want to look at latency issues and compatibility with software etc.

    • @davide2.07
      @davide2.07 3 роки тому

      What about selecting the audio interface as your input device in in Ableton and the MX-1 as your output device? I know you don’t have to technically have the same machine for both ins and outs. Let me know if that is what you mean by aggregate device

    I use ableton and went to demo shop with a minilogue and drumbrute kind of in mind but also some of the aira range and also a push 2 in mind. after looking and thinking about it, I decided after demo on the system 1, tb3, tr8 and mx1. I'm due to go into pay tomorrow, and just wondering if I've made right decision. I see the mx1 has an ableton mode which has mostly reassured me I made the right choice, I'm just scared I might miss out on some of the push2's production bonus's if I don't incorporate it. would you forsake the mx1 for push2 or do you think I'd be making right decision? I understand it's all subjective but with the info I provided, what would you recommend? although I enjoy jamming but production and recording automation etc is fundamentally my aim. I mustnote my audio interface is a onyx black Jack with no midi and maxs at44hz I think, which is another reason I chose the mx1.

      Hey terry :) Thanks for dropping by and asking the question! I don't think you can go wrong with MX-1, System-1, TB-3 and TR-8! The audio quality from the MX-1 is really nice, you probably wont be using the Onyx so much ;)
      The MX-1 is a really useful mixer, because it does so much more than your standard mixers do.
      The TR-8 is an awesome drum machine - it really sounds top notch - make sure you get the 7x7 upgrade.
      The TB-3 is a performance powerhouse - learn to use it and release the potential. A lot of people have no idea how deep this thing can go. Plus you can sequence external gear with it - and the step sequencer is one of the easiest I've ever used.
      The System-1 is amazing - it really has a lush, pure sound. It can be very analog and it can also be FM-ey (with the newer waveforms they've added). The only downside is the keyboard. The system-1m is also pretty cool! I've recently purchased the System-8 - and wow (holding back on saying more just now).
      I love using Ableton Push also, and tbh I don't use it anywhere near as much as I would like. However, when I do use it, it becomes a clip launcher mainly for me - and I guess I could just use the MX-1 (which launches clips using the 16 buttons across the top). To be fair to Ableton Push - that isn't really its main use. The whole point of Push is to get you off the keyboard and mouse and working with your hardware together. You can use it to sequence, record, edit and a whole bunch more. The Push2 has more access to VST params via the bigger screens too. It can also be a sampler/editor.
      I really don't think you're making a mistake if you've already listened to the AIRA gear - and you're happy with how it sounds, what it does, and that fits in with the style of music you want to make.
      Oh, speaking of TB-3, you may want to check out my TB-3 vs TB-03 video :)

      ranzee av thanks for the reply bro. Yeah I was happy with the choice but as I never used the push 2, wondered if it'd b be more use to me than the mixer or the tr8 as I could program drums on it as well as use it as a control surface. I guess I could sell my mpk49 and old audio interface and use towards a push2 which could replace the mpk 49 as my midi controller at later date. I already checked your video prior to deciding on the tb 3 as it has more 'to it' than the classic acid sound (which I love btw). Great Chanel.

      I'd get the MX-1. The Push2 is cool and all, but you wont need it as much as the mixer.

    Shouldn't there be a line going from the MX1 AUX SEND going to the BIG SKY ?

    • @ranzee

      the green line represents the sends in the diagram. You can do this using your FX pedal/device either to return it via the "return" input in the MX-1 or connect it to an audio input separately. Either way it works based on how you want to record the FX.
