Roland MX-1: 4 Years Later Review

- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- The Roland MX-1 is a digital mixer built to work with a combination of different instruments, but especially with Roland-branded USB-specific equipment like the AIRA series, or Roland Boutique series. It's got some unique features like TR-style effect-sequencing, and simulated side-chaining effects... but in some areas I have found a little frustrating.
The day they announced the Roland MX-1 I pretty much knew it was for me. I was already a committed AIRA user with the System-1, TB-3, and TR-8... the MX-1 seemed like a no-brainer with audio/MIDI over USB and additional inputs for my gear.
It's been almost 4 years since getting that 1st MX-1, and my set-up has grown exponentially since then, with more synths and machines, including 2 more MX-1s.
There are strengths and weaknesses to anything, and I try and touch base on what makes the MX-1 unique as compared to other mixers, especially as it fits into my setup, with its playable 'instrument-like' abilities; but also I'll spend some time talking about where it has left me wanting... you know, like a review of some kind.
It's a 4-years-in review!!
this a fyah review ... i was introduced to the mx1 cause my friend want to buy one and i wanted to check out what it can do ... now im super inspired seeing you playing around with all the nice gear and giving very good information too as you go through it alll .... i will say thank you this is greatly appriciated keep up the good work bro this is lit ❤🔥❤🔥❤🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥♥♥♥♥♥♥
Just ordered a B stock MX-1 & it arrives tomorrow.
Can’t wait to play about with it!
This vid helped me decide on wether to buy one or not!
Cheers!
Where did you get it from? I'm thinking about getting one (or more) too.
@@mitchminimal6942 I got mine from Andertons. They had a B-stock one. Basically brand new, just had been out on show in the store for, so was cheaper price. Still got original box & manual and stuff!
@@h-dawg969 That's cool. Glad you could get one.
Nice chill and helpful walkthrough of your approach! Thanks! Just busted my mx-1 our yesterday after having it in a case for like 6 months. Noisey, but SO fun!
This was the exact video I was looking for. You rock! Subscribed.
This video made me buy an MX-1. Was waiting for delivery of a Mackie onyx12 but seems like this will be more useful, especially with the rest of the Roland gear I have
That was awesome!
I had know idea that the MX 1 was so powerful!!
It’s exactly what I was looking for !!!
I shall purchase one !!!
Great video! Much appreciated!
Echo Kraft I have one because I have two Airas connected to its usb link system. he is right about the other 5 analog inputs are noisy. I mean I had to adjust the gain to neg 10 on all 5 . That helped.
Great video, that's one happy studio set-up you have :-)
sounds great, dig the set up
I've never seen anything more trippy than your demo. wow... :)
Great video, thank you. I'm an owner of one and have S8 and TR8-S with my synths summed through a line mixer in to the analogue inputs. Having seen your mastery of them, I'm definitely inspired to blast away some more.
One thing I wouldn't mind seeing some more on is how you route things like the iPad or other DAW sources to it whilst still using it for the hardware.
Thanks again, loved it!
Scott Barnett getting around and seeing comments I’ve missed- I’ll definitely make a vid like that soon thanks for taking the time to comment
MR TUNA Music just bumped into this video/your channel.
1st of all, thank you for this review.
2nd, nice loft man ! ;)
3rd, i come from rock and jazz, so your approach is not particularly my wheel house, but you definitely know your stuff.
i seem to have concluded that the MX-1 is not for me, thanks to your review/demo _ nothing like demonstrating with real sounds and instrumental inputs, so one can really get an idea of what it can do, so thanks again!
4th, a video on ipad and DAW mapping for your setup would be much appreciated .
thanks ;)
Nice vid...thanks, just got an MX-1 been wanting one since they come out...that pad is lovely by the way from the Prophet 12
Really useful explanation. The splicer effect alone almost makes it worth it...not so into the scatter stuff! Thanks for taking the time to walk through it all :)
Hey Mr Tuna, Thanks for posting this! I'm investing in an MX-1 soon and it's good to have an up-to-date opinion.
Alexander Ault glad it could help! I don’t even know if I did it justice for just how much it really adds to my music when I’m jamming around and having fun. I’ve considered going to higher end units, but there’s so much I’d sacrifice leaving the MX1. I feel it’s almost a part of my identity at this point
@@MRTUNA do you think the device sold well enough that they may be planning the release of an MX-2?
great set up and video Mr TUNA , ... so your MX-1 (1) and your MX-1 (2) go to your DAW from each of the 2 MX-1's main USB outs and both show up in DAW together, that's great! and the digital connection , does that also sync the machines or is is it only audio? ... I will sus it out ,just waiting for my second MX-1 to arrive, keep up the great content ...and sounds;)
Sooooo good man I'm new at this. But own both the tr8 and VT-4. I'm running a Hybrid studio I have and want to tie it all together. The mx1 is looking/sounding good. Thanks for the excellent, relevant honest production video . Keep up the good work.
very cool video Mr T. Was just like hanging out with a friend who also provides great tech support! i like your direct & honest presentation style with just a little humor. Great video.
thanks a lot- thats very kind of you to say... I can't even rewatch this because I'm so embarrassed by myself so I really appreciate comments like this!
nah man - just be you - it's all good, and you have a unique personality that isn't trying too hard. Honestly liked this and would watch more in future. Stay real.
Maybe cut back on the hand gestures and dance moves? - but don't fake it...
@@TheInterGalacticFederation some of those hand gestures gave me nausea when I was trying to watch this a few minutes ago.... going to be more conscious of that haha
Once I fool a rich widow to allow me to borrow her Black Card, I will be right behind you on my gear path 🤪😂 really great video 👍🏼. Much Love & Respect from California US 💪🏼
Great run through...does the Mixer have I/O for dedicated AUX FX to say introduce your KP3 into the Efx chain.
excellant review
Seems like really useful features on those mixers. It’s a real shame about the noise floor and those USB channels ... if they’d fixed that and made it more generic it might be useful to those without Roland gear.
Jean-Pierre Joubert yeah I agree! I definitely see why it’s Roland specific from their view... it definitely encouraged me to commit to a lot more of their gear, but the noise really bugs me and I would love some more versatile use of those USB channels (I do use them as PC channels from time to time which fills the gap nicely. You can also run tracks in from another source into your DAW, route them to the individual PC/USB tracks on the MX1 and use them that way... it works great if only a little complicated. I did it that way for my iPad and a few other synths
They should have an updated mixer by now hopefully maybe next year
@@MRTUNA can you run tracks from your iPad via usb (such as AUM tracks or GarageBand tracks) thru the mx1 in a live setting? I was looking at the Mx1 as a live mixer with some cool options if that is possible.
Merry Christmas 🎄 to you as well !!!
The dance moves really helped with my comprehension on this video!
I promise that was their intended purpose!
Looks cozy.
Anyone else see the orb at 0:16? Top left corner. Looks like you have a soul who enjoys music in your studio. 😅
very nice work bro.
man... you're a legend mate lol
Very cool !
I wanted to know more about them !!!
Echo Kraft thanks buddy, merry christmas
Hi!! Where did you buy those stands?
2022? Still rockng it?
still using all 3!
So the usb inputs are definatley Roland code...? Have you tried sending a Behringer td3 to it?
Cheers
Roland only I'm afraid!
Hi, i also have MX-1. Is it possible, to send a Midi-note to USB-attached synths? The mx-1 have a Midi Input. Or in other words: how can a sequencer send midi notes to the individual attached Usb-devices?
yes you can do that! I need to use my computer to route things to the proper usb port but its easy to do with something like "MIDI Patchbay" or almost any of the midi routing software built into daws
@@MRTUNA I have found a working solution!
Connect MX-1 via USB to a Computer. At this point the PC shows MIDI ports for themself and additional 4 Aira-Link-USB ports. Then i route the Midi stream into rtpMIDI network via rtpMIDI driver from the iConnectivity MioXL. For each Aira link of an MX-1 u have to establish an virtual MIDI port and route the Traffic into them. Then u can define specific routing maps in the MioXL configuration software.
I was able to send notes coming from JU-6a connected on USB1 to JX-08, connected on USB3 and vice versa. The MioXL shows Midi notes coming from an MX-1 attached USB synth in his display.
All i need is a configured MioXL and a running computer. So i keep the original Aira-Link functionality of MIDI+AUDIO on MX-1. So i can now integrate a Hardware-Sequencer without building up auxiliary MIDI strain via DIN Midi. 🤩
MX-1 in combination with MioXL is nearly perfect for DAWless studio, now.
PS: the Acidlab like's the MX-1 really, believe me
Hi can I connect a pair of cdj with stereo rca output with mx1? I see only mono jack input for single fader.... please help
Damiano Pistoia yes it is stereo in and out RCA for the effects loop which you could use.
@@MRTUNA thanks for your support
@damiano Pistoia you can change channel 1 and 2 to link together on a the first fader so they can both control at the same time. Same thing on the 3 and 4 channel. I just got 1/4 jack to rca adaptors and it worked perfect you can tell when there in effect the green light of channel 2 and 4 fades will turn off.
Ohhhh you have a kp3 too...how did you plugin ? In mx1 too ? Jupiter 80 ? ...same co fig than me ; )
Kp3 is connected via the effects auxiliary loop and the Jupiter-80 actually uses the MX-1 AIRA USB ports! it does audio and midi that way
Right gear in right hands
bless your heart my child
Great Review!
Very informative thanks! Is there a list anywhere of which other devices can connect through the USB ports?
Love your studio.. can the TB03 be plugged into the MX1 via USB and audio routed/bus powered even..?
Yes, the TB-3 can be powered by the USB, instead of a power supply.
Question for you, on the MX-1 that was "noisy" is any of the analog gear being controlled via USB? I was having a terrible time dealing with noise, and it was coming from both my Novation Peak and Moog Minitaur being plugged in via USB for MIDI control. Once I just used a MIDI cable for them, my noise completely flattened.
Not the case for me, but Ive definitely had to come to terms with that before! good advice!
@@MRTUNA yeah, had to do with USB ground looping. Had a similar issue driven by wires too
Is the Jupiter Xm compatible with the MX1 USB system? I have a TR8s and a Xm. This might make them great partners for the rhythm section.
Time for the 8 years in review review.
ok im gonna do that. im a crotchety old bastard now so it'll have some different vibes
@@MRTUNAplease
Thinking about acquiring this machine, the thing is it’s not built to the use of more then one boutique synths, which I have, maybe Roland would put out an updated mx-2? Soon ?
you can use up to 4 boutique synths, you can only power 1 through USB3 though. the other ones have to rely on battery power or a USB splitter (which works just fine)
Please help. I have a TR-8, System 1 and 1 Yamaha HS8 Speaker. I connect TR-8 midi out to System 1 midi in, then I connected the Mix out(TR-8) L Mono to my HS8. I can hear TR-8 but not the System 1. Thoughts please
This was 4 years ago now. Anything changed?
ill make a new video up, but realistically its pretty much exactly the same as it was back then with some more synths and effects connected now. i just cant give up the dumb performance aspects of it
@@MRTUNA Great. Yes, I just got one off the back of your video. Fantastic Mixer and performance features. Loving setting up a drone on a synth (Novation Mono Circuit) and then kicking in the slicer on the mx1 to give it a rhythm.
Hey man great video. I have just started with some semi modular pieces.. microfreak and minibrute 2s. But before I get anymore gear or a rack I wanted to get a good mixer for everything to route through. got any suggestions other than this? Also I thought we'll I could forget the mx1 And start a eurorack with a mixer module to start... any thoughts or recommendations? I was thinking maybe the rack brute
Great video. (And knitwear)
How are you linking/syncing tr8 clock with mx1? Which the master??
Is it possible to connect the TR-8 the same way as the 808 using usb and the 2 individual outs + hardpanning kick, snare. So 4 analog out + rest via Aira link?
you can feed the mx-1 via usb with an analog synth using a aira effect, like demora, torcido... One question, at what minute is the TR-style effect-sequencing in your video?
thanks for the video. those stutter effects would only work with AIRA gear hooked up right? im trying to figure out if i can use this as an external mixer for the deluge.
Works with any gear through any input, AIRA or otherwise
How does it handle polyrhythm/polymeter? (as in different sequence length per track)
Nice job. Second hand buy, this would be a nice addition. At the asking cost for a new unit with that noise floor on the aux channels, yikes.
ive bought my 2nd and 3rd mx-1s dead cheap used
I regard my mixer as an instrument, with levels and fx sends, so am attracted to MX1. But are those usb channels useable as instrument inputs, I don't have any Aira or usb audio gear?
sorry for the late reply but you can send software channels from your daw to these USB ports if you don't have any roland/aira gear to use in them
please do another one of these. i want to know more about the mx1
Damon Melendez you got it!
can one send audio channels into each slider channels of the Mx1 ?
Henri Sizaret in ableton live mode/external mixer mode definitely- in stand alone mode you can send them to any un-used AIRA USB port fader or the PC fader
i tell you another thing about this video: i can hear the difference between my Behringer RD8 and your TR808. The real-deal seems to have that special something - more warmth and depth in the kick drum.
I would love the chance to compare them side by side! I have heard lots of bits with the behringer and it sounds great, but there's no doubt for me the OG 808 slllaaays the TR-8 (other than that crazy long tr-8 bass drum)
great idea. but i can't send you mine at the moment (unless you can do it quickly and send it back within, like, two weeks). i think the modern sequencer is great on the RD8 - even though some have had problems with the firmware, i haven't. Sound-wise i think the OG stills wins but i would love to hear you do a comparison. I would consider posting you mine under the above conditions.
Man, i’m drunk just watching this video ;-)) just sold my mx1 for a x32compact but i really miss beat FX and one knob filter per track
I was really close to selling my MX1s for an x32 but I just couldn't bring myself to do it. Still considering my options but wondering about the possibility of a MX-2 or MX-1S or whatever I am pretending they could call it. Im still not sure it would satisfy my desire for an ultra-clean professional recording experience, even though thats secondary to what I really do
Thanks for doing this video. Im a little confused how more than one mx1 works together as a matter of the system as a whole. Im planning to switch from a maschine setup to an aira setup, though.
I have it hooked up so that MX-1 (2) feeds MX-1 (1) via the digital I/o so that I can still stream all 36 channels into my DAW via the two main USB, but then MX-1 (3) is just a sub mixer for my TR-808 which I send to MX-1 (2) via AIRA USB and that goes into MX-1 (1) via the digital I/o (or to the computer via MX-1 (2) usb
@@MRTUNA great set up and video Mr TUNA , ... so your MX-1 (1) and your MX-1 (2) go to your DAW from each of the 2 MX-1's main USB outs and both show up in DAW together, that's great! and the digital connection , does that also sync the machines or is is it only audio? ... By my side...i going to plugin my virus...system8...tr8s...moogsub37 and my ob6...it will be enough...because only one brain ; )...imagine...already 16 sou ds possible with my virus...two with the system8...one with sub37...one with ob6...it s already huge...because...thanks to the scene that i can record with the mx1 (64 if i remember well...)...already so many variation possible...i m going to sequence my tipolar with the electribe...to precise...it will be amazing : )

I hope i wont need to buy 3...lol...because my wife is gonne kill me lol
only if you are a unforgivably rabid roland fanboy!
Seems methamphetamine is profitable for you. Congratulations, sir!
You sound like a jealous gutless loser...bravo to you tough guy...
Thks bro. Nice
Welp, you finally wore me down and I ordered an MX-1 to go with the TR8-S, MC-101, and Deluge. The MX will tie it all together. The TR-S has been like a gateway drug for Roland gear. I thought I was a Korg guy 😅
how did that work out? ive had the deluge for years and am wondering how the mx-1 will work as an external mixer with it.
B S and I demand an update!
Godbless like the video I thought I was the only person that has lots of gear love it
No questions anymore Buddy 👍 I ordering right now my new Roland MX-1. I am so crazy 😉🤣👍
I consider selling my MX1 once every other month and then I have a show or I just plug it in and use it and fall in love with it, only to put it aside for my fancier convertors when I get home. It's so great live, filter per voice, two assignable FX processors + an stereo aux in/out (perfect for a kaoss pad) I guess it's destined to be my go to side action, because this has been going on for years now and the MX1 is still in my studio. I really wish it had a couple more outputs on it, but that's about it.
How do you use it with the KP3? I use it with my Aux send and return and I find it to be waaaay too noisy to be of any use to me.
Man that 808 sounds sweet
Mr. Tuna, these reviews are GOLDEN. I've always wondered how you utilize those stacked MX-1s. Bar none, your channel is the premier zone for how to incorporate gear from A to Z in your music. Spot on review. Easy to see why Roland has such a large footprint in your studio.
This by far the most hilarious, and informative video I have seen in ages haha. Hysterical really. You give of the most epic vibe. And great to hear from someone who's been using the MX-1 for a while. Keep it up!
Great review! I got a MX-1 and a TR-8 and it’s alot of fun! Got some new ideas watching this. 👍
Always using it in mix mode but I guess that you cannot get the multiple channels in the TR-8 to your daw? I have only found that mix is recorded via USB1.
I would kill for multi-channel breakdown in the MX-1... maybe an MX-1S!
Hi what do you think of your mx1 after all, is it a good long term investment as of 2020
Waleed Banjar I don’t know if you asked me or Mr Tuna but I still use it and it’s a beast!
Got a wicked sync chain going from it. USB from iMac to MX-1, MIDI from MX-1 to MPC One and from there to a Quadra Thru running a Eurorack, a Phenol, an A01 and a Keystep. Rock solid!
The only negative thing I notice is that the analog channels are a bit noisy (especially when gaining them up.
mor3ten WIPs yes thanks for the reply, just ordered one and it’s coming soon, man you have a rock solid studio chained up, i cant wait to pair it up with my Toraiz AS1, Squid, TR8s and the almighty TB3 for some acid bang jam. Im more of lacking off FX on master output and overall controll, so hopefully the MX1 will be a great addition for me.
I try to use the MX-1 in external mixing mode (EHE), it's working as expected. But the beat fx isn't working any longer in this mode. Are there any experience out there, regarding to BFX in EHE mode?
It’s 2024 and I’m so excited to get my Mx-1 today!
I’ve still got all 3!
@@MRTUNA Very cool. I’m going to need to figure out which cables I’ll need to connect everything.
Did most of your knowledge of the MX1 come by way of performing with it, or more from using it with Ableton Live? And has the fact that you’re using three of them caused your Live setup to reject certain benefits due to limitations in Live? Or has three of them prompted you to take further measures (plugging into a usb hub) or buy extra gear to make the connectivity with Live possible? This is a very good video, and your knowledge on this AIRA gear, especially for use with Live, is solid. Thank you for sharing your discoveries!
Is your vt4 go usb into your mx1?
wow, Just posted on the boards to see if this was still a relevant machine. Very cool of you to do this .subscribed
Great MX1
Can I connect the guitar directly to the MX-1's audio input?
would the mx-1 pair with tr-8s, as i couldnt find any information and went to thier website and saw the update list, they havnt listed the adding of tr-8s, im about to make a decision to buy it but if its not working thru usb it would be a deal breaker for me.
They work together really well..!
Yes - this was made for all of the Roland Aira gear so they’re perfect together
thanks man. really good review. made my mind up and its not for me thanks to this
glad to help
Best review ever!!
😳
I immediately like your vibe.
He ripped off Wild Nothing's "Paradise": ua-cam.com/video/zm636VSQXUU/v-deo.html
I used the MX1 about 3 years ago and hooked her up again now and can not get any sound coming out of mixer, maybe you can get me through this, you've helped me out before but now I'm getting nothing at all. Ive gone through this video over and over and in Mix mode and still nothing but I noticed when I tried to get sound to come out the youtube channel would not play just kept on searching for your video to start, what am I doing wrong, thanks
So i can run 6 synths through this. I have a tr8s a modx7 and a td3 and looking for a mixer. This looks like a whole lot of fun. See them on the market for 250.
Thank you for doing this, is your studio an Anderson shelter lol
I’d like to pick up something like this Honestly.
Hmm. I am now questioning whether I should get this unit with what I'm about to venture into. I want all of this to be able to connect to Ableton via USB:
I have:
Novation keyboard
Novation Circuit
Zoom Reverb Pedal
Now purchasing:
Korg Volca FM
Korg Volca Bass
BigSky Strymon
Any advice ?
Chris B j it does have a pretty well implemented ableton mode if and you can use the Aira channels as ableton channels if you don’t plan on getting any more Roland USB gear
What is the black device above the Korg ESX?
Really cool and fun video guy ! I ordered mine today...just one question...what do you mean by noisy entries analog ? Does it make noise not wanted ? ...i have the same issue with my system8...and i solve it by reducing the level of decibells at less 20...could you do the same with the mx1...can t wait to have it to use with my tr8s ti polar moog sub37 and of course my system8 ; )
let me know if that fixes the noisey outs but it's not a deal breaker for me, just something to be mindful of. It's not terribly severe but definitely noticeable
@@MRTUNA i will...but i m sure you can update the level of outpout in mx1...maybe are you going to check out by your side...mine only comes next week
I have a correction and a question:
Correction: There -is- EQ-ing available on the mx-1 with the mastering.
The mastering has 65 parameters that I don't understand yet, but are for making custom mastering presets.
If you have any idea what these would be, please let me know.
You can get to these by holding down "Mastering" and turning the "Value" knob. You will get n1 - n65.
Question: How can you use the kaoss pad with the Aux Send/Return on the MX-1? The aux send and return are SO NOISY with it, that I can't hear the mx-1 unless it's full blast and filled with noise.
They just posted all the data on mastering in the mx1 Facebook group
@@realdeath not all the data, we still don't seem to know what m1- 23 do?
Thank you for the review, it’s actually very good, even unscripted. Some remarks about the technological choices Roland made :
- Technically nothing prevents Roland from allowing other than Roland equipment to be recognised through the MX1’s USB host ports as long as they are USB Audio/MIDI class compliant (90% of them are).
- Technically nothing prevents Roland itself to present USB Class Compliant interfaces from the MX1 or their synths’ USB device ports.
But they wanted to make of this a closed ecosystem. If I want a closed ecosystem, I get a groove box, and even in that I would need generic driver support.
So I think that’s why it only succeeded with the customers that already had a lot of Roland gear, and hence remained a niche product.
Instead of becoming the new standard for mixers connecting everything through USB host ports and having this convenience of just one cable instead of 3 per synth in a setup. By closing this to proprietary they closed its market.
I hope they will think about that before releasing MX1S, MX8S, Boutique MX-01 or whatever they call this.
yeah I agree--- the new updates to the MC707 make it class compliant over USB... so maybe this is a good sign?
@@MRTUNA yep noticed that as I have the MC-101.
Gives lot of hope. The remaining ones Elektron, RME, Zoom, even Rane and Pioneer in the DJing side, have made the move.
Basically the whole music gear industry is now class compliant except Roland, and I think the Akai MPCs.
I love the mx1
Its such a unique piece of gear. Im still finding new ways to take advantage of it all the time! Happy new year sam!
All the Roland stuff hooked up to the dedicated digital ins is not "in sync" when using the USB to "sync" it. That´s the problem. When you, for example, connect an JD-Xi and the TR-8 they are not running in "Sync"...So you need an external clock(ACME, E-RM) and all the benefits are gone. So why is the JD-XI "tighter" than an dedicated "Drum-Maschine"? The MX-1 is nice for the seq.FX in a live performance situation... if u dont use them its just a noisy interface. For Windows Users it´s the only option to bring those other...ahh what the flick
Koma Bot all my roland gear syncs beautifully to the MX1 so unless it’s a matter of a millisecond or two (which makes no difference in my live use) I don’t notice it at all. Never had a problem
Koma Bot oh sorry I thought you meant USB ins not the digital in. I sync 2 mx-1 via USB main to computer then I sync my third one via USB to MX-1 (2). No problems here!
USB ins sync like a dream for me. Cable clutter is gone and it has no noise issues at all
@@MRTUNA Yeah, you are right, if you dont notice it, it´s ok....but once recognized you will hear it every time. so a adjustable "latency compensation" would be nice. it´s a digital product so latency is a problem. it´s not a MX-1 problem but a "roland" problem...they could imply a "global" latency to all their "aira" stuff so at least those gear would run in "sync", but...just take a drumpattern jd-xi vs tr-8 synced by mx-1, you will hear it and it´s obvious... i still use the mx-1 because of the seq. fx. Yes you can do a lot to make the device noisier than it should be...but timing is just way off when synced through mx-1...If i would bring a range of synthesizers (aira) i would make them at least "in sync" in their own range. (global latency 2ms for all aira, for example).
@@MRTUNA once in sync it would make a difference...but i was not really thinking about it until i got the possibillty to use an acme for 2 month...timing, even just some ms, make a difference.
