If you try to do the voice over into the iPhone microphone it automatically silences the background music that is playing to avoid you re-recording the music track into the vocal track. So the only way to do it is to plug your headphones in and record into the microphone on the headphones. iMovie recognises that you have the headphones in and will play the background music track as you speak......
Touch Technology Review i hope you can answer my question: I also use Boya voice recorder and Beat Studio 3. How can I still able to listen the video and background music?? Each time I record, it always turn off the background music and the video sound. T.T I bought thr microphone to enhance the voiceover quality, turns out It makes me unable to create new content.. Really need your help
Who out here really needed this video? 👋👋greetings everyone, if you are on this video then you want to improve your techniques, you are developing and go towards becoming a successful UA-cam creator, and perhaps a beginner like myself, well done you 👏👏👏
Again such an super simple explanation. You are a great teacher. Slow enough to follow with and actually watch it once and no need to rewatch a hundred times. THANK YOU!
There is no background noise removal tool in iMovie for iOS. however there is a great one on iMovie for OSX. So if you have a mac you can do it on that version of iMovie. Otherwise it would need to be done in another app. You can check this video out for some good iOS audio applications to consider: ua-cam.com/video/MO3GMlElKYk/v-deo.html
Great explanation. Is it possible to add an audio file recorded on your computer as a ‘voice over’ (in the same way you would add music)? I thought maybe to choose the add file option and then add the chose audio file to the clip in question?
Yeah sure you can do that. Just air drop the file across to your mobile phone save it to the files app. Tap on the plus button in iMovie to add the audio track.
How do I fix it if it says "Unable to obtain use of the audio imput device", I was really hoping this video would explain that. As my iphone wont allow me to use voiceover for some reason
I love how you can lower the sound of the original video clip and use voiceovers and you don’t even need a mic. I started doing this because when I add my videos to iMovie the original sound sounds pretty low
Thank youuu, got a algebra project where i have to make a video explain a problem to the class, this will help me later on to edit my video and add my voice over
Thank you so much for this! I have to do videos for work once a month and a lot of them are spliced together. Figured out how to do it on iMovie but couldn't figure out the voice over part of it all. Thank you!
Yes you can drag them in as audio files straight onto the timeline. So first step is to share the audio file and get it to go into the files section of your phone and then copy to the iMovie folder then access the audio files when you tap on the + button in iMovie.
Wow, and wow!! This video not only helped me with voiceovers but also showed me how to get to a place to edit my videos overall. Thank you so much, this is a game-changer for me. I was so lost and could not properly edit any of my youtube videos I posted.
I added all my voice overs and they were perfect. Went back to review video and all the voice overs aren’t playing but they are still there. I’ve tried everything to fix it. Any ideas ?
You can do it in multiple takes just tap on stop and accept to lay down the first voice over. Then move the playhead to the next position in the timeline and record the next VO and so on.
Yes to both, hit command and space on the Macbook Pro to bring up the search bar and type in Voice Memo. If you connect your airpods to your mac you can use them to record the audio and listen back too.
Wow so many videos where people recommend you to buy extra recording devices or use a computer, like GOSH! just tell me how to do it the SIMPLIFIED WAY! thank you for this!!!
You would need to add media on the timeline to the length that you want then do the voice over to match it. So insert a a video or image/s first. Get them to fill the time you want 1-2 hours etc then record the voice over.
Hi, i have a slight problem with IMovie. If I have a screen recording and then import it to imovie, then do a voiceover, iMovie cuts out someof the screen so people can't see what's going on.. kind of disappointing. Is it just like that or is there a solution?
If your screen recording is portrait vertical format, iMovie crops it and tries to make it fit into the 16x9 horizontal crop format. So can do one of two things. tap on the screen recording video clip thumbnail then tap on the pinch and zoom icon in the preview window then pinch the clip so that it fits into the 16x9 crop. however you will get black bars to each side. Otherwise re-record the screen recording in horizontal mode.
This is a great clip, thanks! I did, however want to know how you add snippets of video when you’ve recorded a voiceover as the basis of your clip. I’ve recorded the full audio track (my voiceover) but I’m struggling to find the most appropriate way to add video over the top that is specific to the voiceover. In other words, I don’t want to just add a single sequence of video - I want to piece it together so it’s relevant to the script. I’m a former TV reporter so this is the way I’m used to building content. Many thanks!
I understand what you are looking to achieve. The best way to do this is to bring your audio track into the iMovie project. Tap on the plus button under the video thumbnail view and then add it from the songs folder if you put it in via iTunes or if you are airdropping the file you can select save to iMovie and it will then appear on your timeline as a green audio track. The trick here is to tap on the imported audio file and then select the Foreground sub menu option that appears. When it becomes a foreground audio track you can get full editing control over it, split the track at any point and move left right etc to match the clips on your timeline. By default when and audio track is placed on the timeline as a background track you can't get fine editing control over it. See how that goes. Let me know if helps. Cheers!
Touch Technology Review Thanks so much for the detailed response! It’s very helpful! I recorded the VO directly into iMovie and have been able to split it as required in its Foreground state. Having said that, I had to place a random photo in the project as I couldn’t seem to record the voiceover without visual content in there already... so that’s probably not correct? Should I record the VO as video and audio, and then replace the visuals after? What I’m most unclear on is how to take snippets (i.e. 2-3 seconds at a time) of video content and then place that in exact locations on the audio, both as overlay, but in some cases as ‘grabs’ (quotes). Essentially, is there a ‘staging’ area in iMovie for iOS that allows you to extract those visual snippets without having to import the full clip? Sorry if I’m being vague or unclear! Thanks again for your quick reply!
@@rogeliomax You could go about it either way really. By the sound of it you are building your narrative based on your vocal content so I would say the best way is to record it all as one clip or a few and then add to the project and as you have already done add as foreground music. then split where needed and edit it to perfection. Then you can add video or still photos over the top of the timeline and use the handles on the edges of the clips to make media longer or shorter to fit into the audio. That is the only way you can do it in iMovie. If you have a long video clip and you don't want to edit it on the timeline, you can select your in and out points during the import process, using the yellow bars. Not sure if that answers your question but hopefully it helps out...... Cheers!
Touch Technology Review It very much answers my question - thanks again for taking the time to provide such a detailed response! All the very best to you :)
This is probably asking too much, But it would be nice if I could select 3 or 4 contiguous clips (like a still+video+still sequence) and drag them as a group to a new location either forward or backward in the timeline. Similar to a select, cut/copy, paste operation on a text editor. This would save realigning all of the dominoes one by one..
Yes that would be nice, but at this stage iMovie for iOS is not capable of selecting multiple clips in that way and moving them. You never know in an update perhaps?
What if I recorded the audio as a video and want to replace the video’s audio with the audio of the video. (Trying to make a parody for a school project)
LuX I had to record the song in an audio file in voice memos and then did a voice over it for my lyrics. The quality was bad but I was good enough for me
You can tap on the video clip and then select detach in the sub menu at the bottom of the screen. It will detach the audio from the video clip. You can then move the audio independently of the video and even delete the original video clip leaving you with the audio track on the timeline.
Yes, detach will separate the audio track from the video track allowing you to edit it independently of the video, you can cut it, change volume and move the audio track along the timeline without effecting the video.
When you record the voice over in this way it does record a separate track which you'll see depicted by a purple bar. Now if you can't quite hear the audio from the video, which is still there. Tap on the video track and then adjust the volume. If you want more control over the audio of the video track you can tap on detach and you'll see it appear on the timeline.
Yes you should be able to, if you have a pre iPhone X model you can input an external mic onto the headphone jack. If you have an iPhone X you’ll need the 3.5 to lightening adapter.
Why did this guy even get a single dislike much less 13??? Morons I swear! Thank you, sir - You couldn't have explained it verbally and visually any better!!!
Thanks man, greatly appreciate you taking the time to provide such positive feedback and support! It's OK about those few thumbs down, I guess you can't be all things to all people. If it was the other way around I might have a problem. But all good. Cheers!
iMovie requires that you have a video on the timeline before you can use the voice over feature. So you can just add any video from your camera roll to get it started then replace it with your animation later. Or you can do the voice over using the voice memos app. I have a video on that too: ua-cam.com/video/ue0xeUp_qWo/v-deo.html Then you can add the audio track in iMovie once you are ready to go.
Yes you can do that quite easily. I have used the rode lapel mics with the iPhone . If you have a newer iPhone without the 3.5 headphone jack you can use the dongle which you can purchase from Apple designed for adapting headphones to the lightening port. Then pick any 3.5 microphone to work with it including the rode lav mics. Also you could look at the Rode Video Mic ME and ME-L(Lightening Port version) which is a directional mic that works well for selfie type videos where the phone is less than 1 metre away and you just plug it in and go......👍
Really you might be better off using garage band if you wan to record vocals with a music track. I made a video showing you how to record your audio into Garage band which should put you in the right direction: ua-cam.com/video/cyAfkM8YPf4/v-deo.html Garage Band is a free app that you can download from the App store if you don't have it already.
@@mya1991 Interesting, it should be there. Make sure you are creating a movie not a trailer. So tap on the plus button in the projects window create a new Movie Project. Then add your media. Tap on the plus button just below the video viewer and you should see voice over as an option.
When I make voice over vids my videos get cropped, like they’re not full screen or the original size of the video, it’s like there’s a frame around it. How can I fix that?
That is strange. It shouldn't be doing that. Is your footage in the voice over section 1920 by 1080 or less? Perhaps it is lower than the rest of the movie and therefore it is not matching the rest. You can tap on the movie clip and then the magnify glass in the trop right corner of the screen over the clip to pinch and zoom. See if this brings it to the edges of the screen and removes the frame around it.
When I have music playing in the original video I’m putting a voiceover on, I can’t hear the background music. I’m doing a karaoke type thing and it’s hard to sing on time without hearing the music. Please help!
Try recording with your Apple headset, this way you can listen to the audio and record your vocal at the same time and the music will not spill over into your vocal audio recording.
What if I only have one clip (my video is 2 minutes) but I only want to do voiceover for a few seconds of the video- is that possible/ do you know anywhere I can do this?!
Yes you can do that just position the playhead marker at the point that you want the voice over to appear over the video clip and tap on the plus button and add voice over recording as described in this video....
Anybody can help me here, I previously use headphone with lightning jack to do Voice over. With that I can do voice over while still listening to the video and the background music. It helps me to immerse to the video when doing voice over. I bought a Boya microphone yesterday, and was disappointed because I can not listen the video and the background music while I do the voiceover now. I’m using Beat Studio 3 wireless and Boya microphone. Is there any way I still can record with this amazing tool but still able to listen the background music and the video I edit without buying any adapter?
If you bring the instrumental track into iMovie you can do it. You can use the apple headset so that it records only your voice and not the audio track into the vocal recording.
Oh my lord thank you ive been trying to figure this out for like 3 hours
Glad to be of assistance. Cheers!

I made a video showing you how to record your audio into Garage band which should put you in the right direction: ua-cam.com/video/cyAfkM8YPf4/v-deo.html Garage Band is a free app that you can download from the App store if you don't have it already.
Such a helpful video; so clear and in depth. Thank you!!
You’re most welcome. Thanks for checking out the video!
Thumbs up for accent 😍😍

@@Touchtechnologyreview 😂🤣lol
I don’t have that voice over option please help me
It’s in the latest version of iMovie 2.2.6
@@Touchtechnologyreview I still don't have it
@@mya1991 Interesting, it should be there.
I’m not really sure, it’s just a regular video that I’ve taken vertically with my phone. But I’m going to try what you suggested thank you
Thank you 🙏🏽 soo much for this

When I have music playing in the original video I’m putting a voiceover on, I can’t hear the background music. I’m doing a karaoke type thing and it’s hard to sing on time without hearing the music. Please help!
Try recording with your Apple headset, this way you can listen to the audio and record your vocal at the same time and the music will not spill over into your vocal audio recording.
I wish they would not have the sound level gauge blocking the video.
THANK YOU SO MUCH THIS HELPED ME SOOOO MUCH
Glad it helped! You're most welcome!
Dude thank you so much this is going to help me a lot thank you so much
Glad I could help
Can you do a voiceover on a picture on imovie?
You’re a life saver, THANK YOU SO MUCH
You’re welcome 😊
Thank you this is so helpful
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching!
Anybody can help me here,
I previously use headphone with lightning jack to do Voice over.
How do I record voiceover while listening to instrumental so I can keep in time ?
If you bring the instrumental track into iMovie you can do it. You can use the apple headset so that it records only your voice and not the audio track into the vocal recording.
Thanks a lot for the effort video. It really helped me with an important school project.
Greet to hear. Thanks for checking out the video!
This video has been a very big help
