If April Wine were an American band they would have a string of #1 hits as long as your arm
April Wine, likeRush it was a love affair with their fans rather than radio promos and record sales. They performed tirelessly.
Definitely in my opinion one of the most underrated bands ever this song is awesome the band is awesome
Them and UFO never get enough credit.
The solo in this would have fit right in on Floyd's The Wall album.
I love this band, one of many great Canadian bands 🇨🇦❤️
April Wine “I Like To Rock” ... BTO “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet” ... Triumph “Lay it on the Line”. Songs from some great Canadian bands , just to name a few. Cheers from the great white north.
Oowatanite-April Wine--Total Golden treasure!!! It was difficult to turn on a radio in Canada in the 1970s or early '80s without hearing April Wine. The Halifax-spawned, Montreal-based band made radio-friendly arena rock and sentimental ballads that earned them a mass audience. They had five platinum or multi-platinum albums in Canada, 21 Top 40 singles, and received ten Juno nominations, including seven for group of the year 1975-83. April Wine made their U.S. debut in 1972 with the hard-driving "You Could Have Been A Lady," a Top 40 hit which shot up to #2 on the Canadian charts and became among the band's best known songs worldwide. The band had two other Top 40 hits in the U.S. with "Roller" (1979) and "Just Between You And Me" (1981). Just if your at all curious!! Cheers guys!!
These guys were the kings of Canadian Arena Rock for over a decade and Canada's very best guitar band...3 dueling lead guitars and one of the best drummers on the planet...!
Jerry Mercer shout out.
Oh agreed !! The whole band was made up of great musicians.
April Wine - Pure magic !
@odochartaighofodonegal9815
@odochartaighofodonegal9815 hi, hope you're doing well.
My First Girlfriend was Jill an incredibly at the same time my older brother was dating her sister Brandy.
April Wine came to Calgary for the whole world's gone crazy tour.
Jerry Mercer was their uncle !.
The whole Band came over to their house for dinner .
I'll never forget it !.
Jill and I were little kids , and when everyone left to go to the show Brandi and my brother had to stay and babysit us.
Well, we were about 11:12 years old at the time.
Can't forget Jill's mom making a great dinner for her brothers arrival to Calgary. We lived a couple doors down on a army base and not long after her dad got posted somewhere else somewhere else.
My first concert my brother took me to see April Wine nature of the Beast !
It was pretty incredible
I saw April Wine at the 5th Golden Summernight concert in Mannheim Germany in 1982. A concert with several bands including Jethro Tull and Neil Young. On April Wine's second song an Oompah band came down the river on a barge , anchored and played for a while. April Wine yielded the stage. When they came back, their drummer played a 15 minute solo that knocked my socks off.
I was a Senior in 1982 and THIS album was theeeee album to have back then
April Wine is the Canadian band with more than 20 albums since 1971. I always felt here in America April Wine didn't get the recognition they deserved. A few other songs by them worth a listen are, JUST BETWEEN YOU AND ME, SIGN OF THE GYPSY QUEEN, ROLLER and my favorite YOU COULD HAVE BEEN A LADY from 1972. Another Canadian band known for bangers are BTO, BACHMAN TURNER OVERDRIVE.
I grew up in Indiana 50 miles east of Chicago area, and the radio stations there in Chicago played all of the Canadian bands!
Red Rider's "White Hot" is a great song from this era. Tom Cochrane is the lead singer. Big in Canada in the 80s. Cochrane's solo hit was "Life is a highway".
Try another Canadian band called Triumph. "Young enough to cry" "Magic Power " "Lay it on the line" and "Ordinary Man"
Rick Emitt, lead guitar and singer. One of the best in the world. Another three member band that sounded like ten.
"Young enough to cry"... A true fan!
And they're just as well to watch them live, because they sound the same live as they do on their albums because they can all really play that well, first take.
Ordinary man is phenomenal as is fight the good fight
Ordinary Man is so good. "Here's to health, here's to wealth, may you never doubt youself."
The great John Kay's Steppenwolf iconic Canadian band from the 60's through present. John Kay is an amazing vocalist, blues guitarist, multi-instrumentalist, producer, and songwriter. You have all probably heard "Born to be Wild" and "Magic Carpet Ride", but "The Pusher"(Hoyt Axton) and "Hoochie Coochie Man"(Wiilie Dixon) are great blues tunes that are my favorites.
Another beauty from the “more cowbell” days 😎
This was a huge hit for them along with Just Between You and Me. Alot of airplay this sing. This is when they started getting more poppy but still rocking.
Nature of the Beast was a huge album, got to see them on this tour and it was excellent.
I bought this album on vinyl in 1982, a year after the album came-out, after hearing the amazing power ballad "Just Between You And Me" on Rock radio several times. I was so glad I did. Even though the first couple of songs on it aren't that great, then we get "Sign Of The Gypsy Queen," "Just Between You And Me," "Crash And Burn" (which I see you guys have already reviewed - yay!!), and it just goes on and on from there. _The Nature Of The Beast_ is actually the heaviest album April Wine ever did in the 70s and 80s, it is their most popular, and it's their best. It's an all-around winner.
You DEFINITELY need to react to "Just Between You And Me," "Caught In The Crossfire," "Big City Girls," "Bad Boys" and "One More Time"...ALL of them on this great album. 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻
By the way, the drummer, Jerry Mercer, an absolute big 🐻 of a man, was an absolute beast on drums, as evidenced on "Roller" and this and all the other songs I mentioned above, plus many others. 🤘🏻🐻🤘🏻
Ok, guys, April Wine's good rockers are - Roller, Oowatanite, Say Hello, I Like To Rock, Raise A Little Hell and You Could Have Been A Lady. A more mellow but good one that you could listen to with your girlfriend would be Tonight Is A Wonderful Time To Fall In Love, which even though it's more mellow, is still catchy. Every one of these songs is a must if you want to hear more of this band! Hope this helps. Looking forward to more reactions to this good Canadian band. Cheers from Ontario!
You Won''t Dance With Me is the one to dance with your girl friend
Raise a Little Hell? Trooper
I know I'm late to the party here. A lot of bands in the 80's were popular in certain regions of the US. April Wine was very popular in the Midwest. They are still played on Classic Rock stations in Wisconsin. That Nature of the Beast album doesn't have a bad song on it. April Wine was actually on the Monsters of rock tour back in 1980 with Rainbow, Judas Priest, Scorpions and Saxon.
Another incredible band I had this LP. I think the lyrics in this song are top notch! The whole song is!
Future Tense off of the Nature of the Beast album is bad ass and you won’t be disappointed
BTW .....I saw April Wine in concert in San Antonio in 1982. One of the best concerts I ever went to 👍
Yes boys we loved it in the 70's
You guys are awesome! Keep introducing all this great classic rock to a new generation.
April Wine was actually bigger in Europe than the US, as their Euro tours were always much longer.
"Just between you and me" a must do from April Wine!!!
This is an album that every song could have been a single. Killer start to finish.
This album sold over 3 million in the US alone and 1 million in Canada
In Canada the radio was mandated to play a certain percentage of Canadian (bands) content, hence why we up here in the great north know most of these bands. It was also very hard (for some reason) for a Canadian band to break into the US market back in the 70's and 80's, and probably right up until today. Historically, very few Canadians bands have cracked the US market.
"Wild Eyes" (1975) by the Stampeders - another great lost Canadian rock band.
"Fantasy" (1983) by Aldo Nova - Canadian classic 80's face-ripper, keys and guitar
"Fly At Night" (1977) by Chilliwack - great 70's soft guitar rock
Peace
I am shocked I cannot find someone on youtube who will react to Aldo Nova "Fantasy". When that song came out, we were like OMFG! This is so so so...we were speechless. Never heard anything like it.
Yeah, these guys were pretty good at everything...rockin hits, radio friendly rock, killer ballads to slow dance to...appreciated in Canada, loved at their live shows ANYWHERE in North America...ignored by the U.S. music machine (not the only ones)
People who knew, knew
back in the 70's we had some AOR (album oriented rock) radio stations that would play April Wine. The literal depth of 70's rock is immense.
This band was a gem I pulled out on my overnight shifts in Arizona on Kool FM.
Check out their cover of 21st Century Schizoid Man.
Maybe it's because we are closer to Canada than you guys are but April Wine gets played on the radio a lot here in Wisconsin. Or at least they did in the 80s and 90s. Thanks for the reaction guys.
Quintessential song in my HS years.
To second Triumph, check out the live vids of "Lay it on the Line" and "Fight the Good Fight".
Any song on the Harder Faster album is pure 🔥
I like to rock. Is another of their bangers!
This whole album rocks. They use pedals for different tones and guitar effects.
Epic song live .. .this was the highlight of the show along with Roller and 21st Century Schizoid Man.
April Wine's greatest hits album is can't miss. Boys, check out the tracks on it and choose anything. Also, I Like To Rock, which has a cool shout out to a Stones hit and a Beatles hit overlapped. Also Say Hello and Enough is Enough. They are a straight on rock/rock-pop band. Very underrated group out of Montreal. Myles Goodwin is a really good vocalist and guitarist.
*Halifax
April Wine - "Weeping Widow" will fill your itch.
"I Like To Rock" might as well.
Been my fav band forever. Here are my favs: Comin' Right Down On Top Of Me. Before The Dawn. Tonite. Slow Poke. Say Hello. To name a few... Please enjoy responsibly!
April wine rocks! One of my favorite bands from the 80s. I saw them back in the 80s.
Three different guitarists, playing different guitars. And yes, they will all sound different as they have different pickups and one neck may be longer than the other. This gives them the ability to play different and it all sound different and you can pick out when the guitarist changes. Check out "I like to rock." It too will make your playlist. Along with "before the dawn."
YES. And what about their AMAZING cover of King Crimson's "21st Century Schizoid Man?"
You need to know about CanCon, which stands for Canadian Content. In Canada there's rules for radio stations where 35% of songs played must be of Canadian origin. This was to prevent US music from dominating the airwaves and suffocating the smaller Canadian recording industry. Ultimately, there has been songs (and bands) getting airplay in Canada that couldn't really compete in the US market. This means bands like April Wine, Triumph and others, while having a few good tracks, had many more get saturation airplay in Canada as a means of satisfying the CanCon rules. People up here have heard these songs on rock radio for 30-40 years and have an affinity due to familiarity, not necessarily due to quality.
Looks like you guys are instant April Wine fans. Myles Goodwyn just passed away this week at age 75. April Wine were a staple in Canada in the 70's & 80's. I have some great memories of playing their songs in my beat up 1973 Ford Pinto with a Marantz stereo system worth more than the car! Lol. RIP Myles.
The live version of this from this tour was sooooooo damn good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 80's sound,, COMPRESS the shit out of it, add some chorus and delay.. As far as the sounds... Different effects, different amps, mic placement, room size, etc... Every thing was done with amps (pretty much) guitars, effects.. There were no amp and cabinet simulators, pro tools... EVery thing was recorded on 2" tape. If you F'd up you had to "punch it in" or do it again LOL No "cut and paste".
When stuff was just plugged in - and way you go !!
I saw April Wine at my local bar and festival they were great ❤👍
These guys do Not get enough credit or airplay, but we loved them back in the '70's and 80's !
All over Town, Like a lover like a song, say hello, it goes on and on and on .... and on
Brings back memories of my childhood in San Antonio TX. Joe Anthony used to play these guys , triumph, budgie and rush before they came down on tour, they had a following before they got to San Antonio
1) Roller
2) Sign of the Gypsy Queen
3) I like to Rock
4) Enough is Enough
5) Say hello
and one for your girlfriends or wives....................... Just between You and Me
trust me. The wind chimes might be open string strum,
If You See Kay was really awesome live. Played this on their Power Play tour which I was lucky enough to see.
3 is my favorite. Epitome of a rock song.
Huge in the midwest!! Really big here in Michigan
April Wine "Wanna Rock"
Thanks for a great reaction. Try" I like to rock", or all over town". 2 of April Wines more popular songs
If you want a great song listen to I like to rock , great three guitar playing
If you enjoy keyboards, April Wine-Comin' Right Down on Top of Me. For soul chilling blues, Silver Dollar both songs are on same album as Roller. I was lucky to grow up during the 60's,70's early 80's talent abounded back then.
This was a big hit for the band, thanks for reviewing it! My favorite song of their's is definitely "All Over Town".
Still touring after 52 years together
oh...they have "some" good songs. LOL "Some" as in a few dozen. And thank you. You're one of the first reaction acts to do this song or any April Wine.
Another very underrated talent was the late great JEFF HEALY
Get out and see these guys live. They still tour.
April Wine "I LIKE TO ROCK" & "OOWATANITE" are their best songs IMO \m/ #candarocks
These are great tunes. Check them out!
Roller by April Wine
The clear sound effect on the guitar arpeggios is a chrorus pedal , when comes the chorus it's a distortion pedal
The boogie woogie rock sound that AW perfected with triple guitar attack and harmonies can also be on display on You Could have been a lady, bad side of the moon good from far far from good , I like to rock , just like that.
They have a shit ton of ballads as well
Like a lover like a song, RocknRoll is a Viscous Game, just between you and me
Love April Wine. With me , some of my favorite songs from other bands, that I really didn't originally like, took multiple times listening to them before they became favorites . (If that makes any sense). I'm sure that's the case for a lot of people. I'm glad that you guys have had an opportunity to appreciate this band 😁
April Wine played at my junior high in Halifax when I was 12/13 years old. Maybe 1969.
Child’s Garden! Probably my favourite April Wine tune.
they were signed to a canadian label and had licensing issues in america which held them back from touring and getting airplay on a large scale-otherwise would ve been much bigger. in canada they toured for decades and still play(ed) festivals and casinos i saw them 5 or 6 yrs ago and they were great
sheer nonsense
this song is a classic jam, i loved this in high school. yeah i am old lol
For that era's sound, a compression pedal, crunch, delay, reverb and doubler, typically pushed by a Strat on front pickup, with a switch to mid and back for the more "mellow" interludes. At least that how I approached it. ;-)
Just between you and me..by April Wine is a must!!
If you like “ triple guitars “ the best is Molly Hatchet! “ Dreams I’ll never see” , “ Gator Country” , “ Bounty Hunter” , etc
they were HUGE in San Anonio. in the 70s SA and eroit were the two rockiness cities for rock sales.
I was surprised you didn't pull up the April Wine - Roller (official music video). Then you would have seen all 3 guitarist axe each other. If you get a chance check out the video..
I was stationed in Ft. Drum NY in the early nineties Great Canadian rock bands were constantly playing in Watertown
type of pickups used, brands of pedals, strings, amps ,cables...everything has a signature it imparts to the sound...
Just between you and me! April Wine..
All the musicians are Ace! Watch a Jerry Merced drum solo on Y Tube. All were great rock guitarists with a lot of feel and much of the tone I am told was in the hands. The flanger/chorus pedal on Gypsy Queen is awesome. Listen to this album with headphones if you want a guitar mind blowing experience.
I would also suggest their songs "All Over Town," "Just Between You and Me," and "Caught in the Crossfire." And if you guys have never reacted to Helix, I'd suggest the songs "Deep Cuts the Knife," "Rock You," and "You're a Woman Now."
This song is in grown-ups one when shack is directing traffic! LMAO Classic scene.
I Like to Rock by April Wine is a banger! Your next song by them!
I'm so old I had this album on cassette tape LOL 🤪👍
I’m so old I had this album on 8 track😂😂😂
Ditto - For me I got hooked by Bad Side of the Moon on KTel album I got around age 10. Had to go exploring the rock direction from there, never mind Tony Orlando and the like on the same disc.
Been going deep cutting AW and found a few more heavier rockers in "So Bad", blistering guitars in the Frank Marino vein, "Before The Dawn" which is somewhat Proggy too, "Wench" from the debut album, for the first almost 3 Minutes just a "small r" rock song, then we get the first outbreak of the Triple Rack Guitar Attack and the destruction it can leave, "Crash And Burn" has a taste of Thrash Rock to it, damn fine splendid it is, "Electric Jewels" Mellow early, Rocker middle, Prog finisher, "Hot On The Wheels Of Love" Steve Lang's Bass just ripping it up, along with the triplets. There you go, that should keep you busy.
Guys, I saw these guys open for Triumph in !982 in Buffalo NY...... Fantastic band and this was their best song.....
April Wine was a big band in the San Antonio Market in the late 70s and 80s.
If you go through their library you will notice that even if a Rock Band at heart they are also very versatile.
I Like to Rock" The Epitome of the Perfect Rock Song! This ones Damn Good Too!
back in the day a lot of bands used a mixture of fender and gibson to make a certain sound ...fenders usually are crisp gibsons tended to be more airy
Joe WHO? I don't know the name of that movie, and when it was repeated, you guys STEPPED ON EACH OTHER!
As for the reaction, let me give you guys some context so maybe you can understand just how awesome this is. When I do that song, it follows "Ride Captain Ride" by Blues Image, which is dedicated to Danish physicist Niels Bohr. He studies spectral lines and came up with a formula which predicted the color of singly ionized helium. When they checked it, the colors matched!! Can you imagine how exciting that is? He won the Nobel Prize for that.
Now for the context; the time was April 9, 1940. The date of the fastest military takeover in history, the Nazi invasion of Denmark. They called it the six-hour war. Actually, it took the paratroopers about three hours to get the King's signature, but the Instrument of Surrender is a legal document requiring certain signatures, and they had to wait three hours for the Chief of Naval Operations to get back from running 6000 Jews to neutral Sweden. About 200 got left behind, and the Nazis shipped them off to Germany.
The Danish Government was not through. They sent diplomats to inspect the camps. About 50 people died during five years of war.
That afternoon, the Nazis showed up at Dr. Bohr's office demanding the "gold of the Jews. You have two students that we know have gold. Where are they?"
"I don't know."
Sitting on a shelf in the back of his lab were two bottles mismarked as innocuous salt solutions. After the war, Dr. Bohr sent them to the jeweler who made the Noble Prize and they restruck the medals.
"Sign of the Gypsy Queen" was set April 9, 1940, in a trailer park in Denmark.
Wut
Oowatanite. Hands down favorite
Hi guys! Great reaction!!
As for the "why haven't we heard of this band before?", might be a question of numbers... since the canadian population represent 10%-ish of the american one, it might be a kinda "1-way" thing... Much more american music goes north of the border than canadian music south of it.
April Wine, Rush, BTO, The Guess Who, Streetheart, Triumph, Harlequin, Headpins, Toronto, The Tragically Hip... I could go on and on. But Stop banging your head for NOT hearing this before and enjoy your new discoveries... Good music is good music!
Everyone says the word underrated a lot in comment sections. In the case of April Wine, its true. They were even better live. The biggest touring acts on earth in the early 80s WISH they were as tight live as these guys.
April Wine: Enough is Enough, This Could Be The Right One, Sons of the Pioneers, Rock Myself to Sleep, the whole Nature of the Beast album.
Gotta give 'I like to Rock' AWESOME GUITARS. Most underrated band. Also you should be the first to do their song 'If You See Kay' you'll love it.
That song is a rock masterpiece.
The effect on the guitar is the stereo chorus pedal!
Love April wine I loved being a teenager in the 70s
Love your reactions. I will suggest again, "I Like to Rock"!!!
Guitar solo, sounded a little like Pink Floyd to me, nice!
