I feel like a modern UA-cam rewind would be more like Spotify wrapped where it’s personalised and like tells you which youtuber you watched the most
They could have easily pivoted to this! I’ve always thought it’s weird they didn’t.
I have youtube music and it does a "2023 recap" that includes music videos. Surely they could expand it to cover what you watched?
Thats an awesome idea
I was just about to comment this
This needs to happen
I do actually miss the rewinds:/ it was really fun, and the hatred of it brought the community together
We made fun of James Charles fans and harassed some of them lol
That's the problem though, since the pandemic, there hasn't really been one collective internet culture. UA-cam isn't a group of people who all like silly fun videos anymore. It's too fragmented and individual now for the classic style of Rewinds..
UA-cam Rewind was leftism the rewind
It's like E3 was to gamers, it brings everyone together through collective hatred.
@@skoop651 what
I just assume UA-cam Rewind is the reason they removed the dislike button, they were too embarrassed to show how much people hated their own content
Plenty of people used the Dislike button to just bully people. So the video was OK but people just disliked videos because they wanted to be mean.
I hope there would be some sort of system where you could dislike videos that are actually bad, like videos that break TOS, are clickbait, or are stolen videos from other channels. Maybe some sort if tagging system. If enough people who watched the video wrote a same tag to the video it would appear publicly to the video.

we all know they wouldn't adress it at all
I don’t want them touching it. Esp with how they blamed Jacksfilms for Sssniperwolf doxxing him. They’d probably say Colleen was justified for grooming children. Not like Sssniperwolf didn’t do similar things to kids, and they forgave her.
I remember when VeVo was controversial and a lot of people hated it bc it was companies posting music videos instead of fans. I'm so old.
I completely forgot about this omg
Feeling old moment
I also remember VEVO videos always seemed to load ridiculously slower than fan-uploaded music videos, making it extra frustrating
People forget that you had to wait a long time for a video to load before you could just watch it, especially on hand held stuff like ipads. Like longer than the video sometimes. Now its like not a problem cause of 5g networks and whatnot @@A-D-D-F_Toxic

Gabbie Hanna discussing social issues in the middle of a rewind feels like a fever dream.

Of al the things she'll be remembered for in her life. It will be this quote, and for all the wrong reasons.
The hard part about picking a theme for 2023 is that by this point in time, UA-cam's so algorithm driven that it's hard to organically come across things you might like. EDIT: I worded that poorly. What I meant was that your recommendations are so tailored to your own taste that it's rare to come across something unexpected and new that you are also into, so the idea of a "viral" video that spans across different niches doesn't really exist in this decade.
Shorts. It would be all about shorts.
really? I get plenty of content I might like everyday.
I think you should be arguing the opposite point in relation to YT's current-day algorithm; it's very easy to find content suited to your tastes, but it's hard to stumble upon content popular outside of your own bubble. As a result, there are no big "viral" UA-cam moments anymore.
Yes! Thank you for putting it that way. That's what I was trying to say but it came out wrong.@@egel7736

she absolutely did not deserve the hate that she got, she was a literal child making a song about having fun with her friends. people were so disgusting towards her, she talked about getting death threats and people telling her that she should get EDs.. all because of an autotuned and somewhat cringy song. not to mention, her parents and the producer of the song were more at fault than she was, but i guess it's easier and more fun to bully kids.
The absolute best singular UA-cam Rewind moment was Jaiden Animations sneaking in the Pewdiepie chair in her clip after UA-cam wanted nothing to do with him, lol.

I used to love recognizing a bunch of people it was fun, but it’s become so saturated, it would be even more overwhelming than before
It sort of is a microcosm of UA-cam going from fun and games to corporate business
For me, it was the opposite. I didn't watch a lot of international youtubers, so when they started including german youtubers, I was finally noticing someone in those videos and I was so exited.
@KiraFriede are you from Germany?
i want a youtube rewind made for my personal tastes that i’m not willing to disclose until the video has been published

UA-cam rewind 2020 would've definitely been a zoom call 💀
The celebrities singing Imagine video was UA-cam Rewind 2020 all along!
I know this was probably just a throwaway joke, but I feel like some people’s minds would be blown to know that Pewdiepie and Zoella were actually friends! He was in a lot of her and Alfie’s vlogs back in the day, they did Christmas together one year, they both had pugs and would walk them together around Brighton. They most definitely hung out outside of that UA-cam rewind video.
Or not. Pewdiepie said he was confused why he was with Zoella in the "Why im not in UA-cam Rewind 2017" video. He said it was weird that Zoella was with him instead of Alfie, and why he wasn't with Marzia instead since she also was a youtuber at the time.
i think that's more saying it's strange that they weren't with their partners, who are also youtubers. rather than them not being friends like this comment is saying.
@@linn8370
I think as UA-cam because so diverse and full of multiple communities it becomes harder to have a general rewind that can cover all that was great or viral that year. If it ever got revived maybe making multiple that could cover more. Like have each branch make it more relevant for that country. But tbh kinda glad it is no more.
If they didnt use half the rewind to showcase not youtube stuff it would have been less hard tho lol.
That would work.
Honestly I like the early rewinds a lot. They had no real theme. It was just straight to the point, a simple edit of many of the most popular UA-cam clips put together.
yeah that's like the internet as a whole now, everyone's so divided up into niches
In defense of rewind 2017, the credits featured all of the animation channels that got popular that year was really well done
Even that I do remember the animation channels not exactly being happy the got relegated to the Credits and it was one of the many reasons people gave to hate it.
@@luketfer from how i remember it was bad communication on youtube's end for why animators didn't know they would just be the credits. it was the first time they were included in rewind even though story animation channels had been popular for years before though. most of the reasons youtubers say their experience bts of rewind was bad seems to mainly be bad communication as well.
the theme would most definitely be barbenheimer related, following the trend of them doing memes that were popular even outside of youtube
& mostly tiktok references videos. UA-cam is pretty tame now that it’s mostly just commentary channels and everyone grew up
I recall that a number of youtubers started declining being in rewind because the process of recording them was just a mess - so viewers would complain that youtube didn't think to include certain people when the youtubers in reality just didn't want to be a part of it anymore
Which UA-camrs are you referring to? Also sometime UA-camrs would get asked to be in rewind but would have to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts
The double rainbow guy died a few years ago so I think the 2010 rewind can be excused completely.
Sue me, I still like that video anyway (and the song remix!)
HE DIED?!
Ughhhh..... that hurts my heart
Personally 2012-14 was the best of rewind we got. Afterwards it just slowly turned into “throw everything that happened this year into rewind” and it ended up losing its heart. On top of that, they tried too hard to put anyone with a milestone in there to the point where most of the cast wasn’t recognisable. The focus on celebrities / talk show hosts did also ruin the fun a lot…
i ADORED 2015's rewind when it came out and i rewatched it a ton hahaha
Me too, I was a huge fan of jennxpenn(Jenn McAllister) at the time & she was in the cage scene. I think that was the first & only time she was in a rewind lol
14 and 15 were the best ones Imo
Evil Rewind 2023 is just late night talk show hosts recreating the most heinous hate crimes of the year set to the Barbie soundtrack.
Moral of the story, it wasn't the rewind that was the problem, it was youtube.
"Notible people in 2012 rewind..." proceeds not to mention Jenna Marbles

I miss Rewind a lot, but I understand why it couldn’t continue, UA-cam just became too widespread and the large communities and people that dominated it became less impactful as a result. Though I do think if UA-cam really wanted to continue it they would’ve found a way, but everyone began hating on Rewind and there was no reason to fight to continue it
honestly just shocked you seperated dan and phil in the background, thats a package deal there
Hearing Benedict talk about Friday by Rebecca Black was a gut-punch of nostalgia. Not for the Friday video itself, but for all of the analysis videos of the Ark Music Factory that Benedict used to do on Cup of Team. I would rewatch those all the time.
Cup of Team? Not heard that name in years 🚬
i was literally typing out this exact comment OMGGG i used to rewatch those analyses all the time too!!!!
I actually think the main reason rewind ended (second to all the complaining, I mean) is that youtube is just too big. There used to be only a handful of people with millions of followers so most people knew them and they knew each other. Now there are hundreds if not thousands of people who have over a million subscribers on here. Everyone is so spread out, youtube isn't a community anymore.
Completely agree! I miss that OG community!
this years rewind would definitely include barbie and taylor swift if they were gonna do one
I love to scroll deeply with Scroll Deep
7:47 Pretty sure pewdiepie and zoella were friends back in the day. They posted videos together. Zoella and Marzia (his gf) were close.
This video just made me realize how much progressively worse life has gotten since the innocence (and, at times, ignorance) of 2011, 2012 and 2013. 🥴 Back then I could sit down and watch a dumb orange scream about things, now so much of what’s recommended to me is just rage bait no matter how many times I select “don’t recommend this to me” 😩
This!
I mean you can say that, but I remember browsing youtube back then and accidentally clicking on a beheading video. And we had people like Shane Dawson doing questionable and predatory stuff on camera and to their fans all the time and then those same fans replicating that stuff in theri schools and homes. I guess the trade for having people become more aware of these dangerous and bigoted things is that there's also people using the exhausted and polarized people browsing youtube to get clicks from rage bait and uh worse things.
2016 was the year, to me, things truly fell apart.
I feel like the world ended in 2016 and we've just been living in a weird purgatory state ever since
2014 was my personal favorite. I liked 2015s as well. After those it just went downhill

I've been re reading the hunger games series as an adult and i really appreciated the 2012 hunger games references because it really was the vibe at the time. Awesome video, instant subscribe
I just wanted to stop in because of the thumbnail to say, Jenna was the best thing on the site and it's a shame she's gone but I can't blame her. She got out before everything hit the fan and it's amazing to see the timing.
Ofc there’s photos of legendary scroll deep characters Dan and Phil in the backdrop
Honestly, I really want to like youtube rewinds because I love easter eggs and references. The focus on gamers were also great, but the way that sometimes they can bring a few trends without being annoying like "The dress" scene in 2015 where they were in a rap battle, I dont remember much but I like to think of it as another ERB reference, about the dress. But James Cordon is unforgivable
"the double rainbow guy" was absolutely a youtuber. He was such a youtuber that he set up his channel to keep uploading with old unused vlog clips for years after his death.
I miss the older rewinds so much. It was so fun seeing your favorite content creators coming together to make a fun compilation of what happened that year.
Did anyone really love 2013's Rewind? It's so much fun
I loved 2012 to 2015. The rest ranged from meh to whatever 2018 and 2019 were
I loved UA-cam rewind 2012 - 2014 as a kid because i enjoyed seeing a lot of youtubers i watched in the video. Those rewinds were more about youtubers, popular memes and what things were popular during that specific year. I feel like 2015 - 2018's rewinds just tried to cram too many things in at once. It got harder to spot your favourite youtubers and things like talk show hosts and people that got popular on other social media platforms had a bigger appearance
They can't do rewinds anymore. Trends on UA-cam used to be fun songs and goofy challenges. Now it's just controversies.
My best guess as to why so many people think there was at least one more rewind after 2019 is because the slideshow they did for 2019 fells like something they'd quickly pull together during COVID
Do love that it went for the whole 2010s decade and only then

(10:45) Of all solar eclipses that happen every year, that one only mattered because it happened in USA. Even non-US UA-camrs, who's had eclipses where they've been before, didn't care until it happened in USA.
As a German, I loved seeing a few German youtubers on 2014+ rewinds. Even tho the shown ones never were my favorites and I didn't watch most of them, I still was really happy about the representation because we had a really strong youtube community here in Germany with a few bigger fan events
Also the one marrying bongo cat is Dagi Bee, a German beauty youtuber. She got married in that year, so that's why they did that to bongo cat
As someone who's never seen a UA-cam rewind and who only learnt about the existence of them several years after they stopped making them, I see this as an absolute win.
2012 was the rewind I personally loved. There wasn't a whole lot of youtubers out yet and the most popular ones, everyone knew. Plus, they were on top of the trends in that video
No, I would not like to see Rewind come back over the simple fact people have too many opinions. I think we could all agree that back in 2015 was the last year that the majority of people had the same opinion or respected others opinions. Now... no
Well people are not one and the same, get used to it
2014 and 2015 are the best. Seeing everyone you know was the joy of it. Especially seeing someone for the first time. I remember seeing Ethan Nestor in it and smiled bc I didn’t think he’d be in it even though I knew Markiplier was going to be in it
The beautiful thing about Rewind was that every new one made the previous ones better
7:25 PLEASE
I saw Markiplier and went “Mark😄” and then Benedict mocked me😭
Right, I felt like I was astral-y punched when he said "Markimoo"
UA-cam 2023 should be a list of every cancelled UA-camr and what they've done with "Sticking Out Your Gyatt For The Rizzler" playing in the background
I don't know if would be the theme itself, but defintely a BIG part of this years Rewind would be Barbienheimer (or however it's written)
my favorite youtube rewind is the one with jacksfilms riverdancing for .05 seconds
as an irish dancer and a jacksfilms fan I can only agree
So 2016
I'd say the biggest issue was UA-cam bringing in massive celebrities and talk show hosts and twitch streamers..and the whole one where they said they took comments and turned it i think was bad because who did they ask? Where's the evidence of that happening?
I'm rooting for a 2023 youtube rewind that's just all the massive amount of youtuber controversies from this year. Because boy
it's a lot!
Anyone else take a massive hit of psychic damage seeing people talking about how as a kid they loved the 2015 rewind? I'm too old for this.
Also honestly I only recognized a total of like 10 people in all of the rewind videos, not including the people who aren't really youtubers (Will Smith??)
I don't know if this is just nostalgia bias since these were my favorite years of youtube, but I love the 2013-2016 youtube rewinds
There is a website where you can see your own personal UA-cam “wrapped,” but if we’re not gonna be getting any more UA-cam Rewinds I would LOVE for an official UA-cam recap of videos/creators I’ve watched over the year.
The one for music is pretty meh, especially since I hardly ever listen to music on YT to begin with.
what's the website called?
13:15 The person getting married to Bongo Cat is german youtuber Dagi Bee btw, if I recognize her correctly. It was crazy to me how much screentime she had
Why did they even choose her? She wasn't even the most subscribed German UA-camr at that time and no one knows her outside of Germany. Kurzgesagt would have been a much better choice…
@@redfirefox155 They didn't just wanna cater to the english speaking UA-cam Community, so it makes sense. Spotify this year had your top artists send you a personal video message and I thought YT could 100% do something like that. Let all the big names turn in a short video and an algorithm mushes them together for s personal rewind.

I think the rewind arc was closed pretty well, started the same way that ended (pretty bad what do we expected)
Now the rewind king is the brazilian youtuber Lucas Inutilismo he does the top song of the year in one song playing all the instruments

this is the first time i've seen any youtube rewind lol, i'd been vaguely aware of the concept but never watched them. a nice sum-up.
The theme for this year would obviously be Skibbidi Toilet. It would be Rhett, Link and a bunch of talk show hosts heads popping out of toilets, singing the song.
I would call 2011-2013 "my youtube era". I miss it
Maybe unpopular but 2012 was my favourite UA-cam rewind. I remember waiting for it and being so excited to see a bunch of my favourites its one place

And they can even highlight the short-form content that you’ve watched all the way through on repeat. That’s just a cool idea for anybody to get rejected so I don’t gotta feel the sting though

Not fair on 2012. It was a banger, I loved it at the time, first one I ever saw and everything happening in it was notable of that year and so were the people in it. It is relatively uncringe, judgement is biased. It gets no higher than uncle dancing.
I think the Bongo Cat marriage was supposed to be the Royal Wedding of Harry and Meghan. It came out the same year
2018 has aged the best. Not because people like it, but because people hate it just as much as they did when it came out.
love how miranda is just peekin over the shoulder at 5:11, made me laugh a bit too much
They should do something where they take clips from what you've watched throughout the year like they do on my Facebook for the anniversary of posting something could be an automatic for each person account post for what they've watched like random videos from their watched list or they posted if they post they do something similar from or you can make it. It's an option at least on TikTok.
the youtube rewind never having FilthyFrank (joji) despite Harley Shake being from him was always weird to me.
Especially now that they try to claim him as a UA-camr
I only bring this up, because they were talking about the fact that everyone requested UA-camrs they wanted while he was the most common to see at the time
I knew I recognised the host's face. I haven't watched a 'Cup of Team' video in years and now I'm seeing one of the former hosts show up in my UA-cam feed. Love the video, Benedict.
You tube rewind 2023 would have someone playing subway surfers poorly in the corner and then a bunch of niche stuff you only recognize like 5% of
Definitely think the theme of 2023 would lean heavily to those 4 - 10 hour long videos about one specific topic.
Toxic Gossip Train coult be the theme of The Evil Rewind. Colleen is riding, Tana is the conductor and everyone who made us go mad takes the train and goes away to the eternity. :))
honestly subscribed bc when markiploer appeared i went MARK! and then immediately got roasted by u and it made me lol
The worst part is, if you asked me right before I watched this what I could remember of ANY Rewinds, I would ONLY have been able to recall the horrible 2018 one. So I'm glad to be reminded of the gangnam style and ice bucket years.
i liked the rewinds. they brought the whole year together. it doesnt have to hold up, it just shows that year. who cares if they got cancelled after that? its a history book, not a campaign.
Rewinds definitely showed off the community aspect. And as the years went on they mirrored the commercialization of UA-cam.
UA-cam works so well because of the niche interests of people. Trying to please an audience that has so many different tastes is just not going to go well. 🤷♀️
youtube rewind was an important tradition but it wasn't nearly as important as making fun of it was. even if every rewind from now until the end of time was as bad as 2018's was, i wish they kept doing them
