Are Super Mario Bros. Speedruns Dead?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 чер 2024
- Niftski, on September 6th, 2023, did what was once thought to be impossible - and was the first ever human to play Super Mario Bros perfectly all the way up till the final level: 8-4. So, what does that mean? Did Niftski kill what is Super Mario Bros speedrunning, or is there still more to be pushed? Let’s talk about it.
Thank you to @Niftski for proofreading everything for this video!

If there’s a human way to get the record even lower, I’m sure Billy Mitchell will get us there

Nah, Todd Togers is your man for that. He’ll start the run in second gear!

I honestly think Niftski can match the TAS. It'll be a monthslong grind, at least, but considering this guy sets records weekly, I think it's possible.
Years
@@jayure1346months
4 years ago, a carpetless TAS for SM64 was made, in September 2023, someone managed to pull it off, and they did it on a single level run, not implemented into a full run so the chances of Niftski matching the TAS in a few months is insanely low, although he is cracked
Problem is, however, that the perfect TAS uses some inputs that cannot be physically done on a standard controller, so it may be impossible to match the TAS in that case
@@user-nb6sh1gy8sthe other tas dude

Speedrunning is at least as much about improving your own time compared to getting WR. If somebody matches TAS, the category is only dead to them, everyone else still has a goal to shoot for.

It just hit me that it's been 2 and a half years since the final second barrier was broken.
It doesn’t feel real to me. I remember when darbian got 4:56 and that seemed like a perfect run
Yeah
They have been working hard for nearly 10 years to improve the time in less than four seconds
I remember when Kosmic got 4:55.646 bro
Man, I just hope Nifski is having fun. Being on top like that has gotta be exhausting.
He literally barely has to practice he’s annoyed that he doesn’t get to grind most of the time
@@a_little_flame589woosh? Hilariously ironic woosh
I predict that after Any% is destroyed, people will work on perfecting Warpless so that all of the levels are included.
Well yeah but that will take year then we still have the lost levels but we may eventually conquer that but like that game is extremely hard for speed runs
There will also be people who will strive to add their names to the list of people who matched the record.
Niftski is a machine.. The speed at which he learns new tricks/strategies and sets new records is simply inhuman. I dare say he is in a league of his own in regards to his technical skills, adaptability, and most importantly, the speed at which he accomplishes his goals. His achievements really are mind-blowing.
don't forget his consistency too.
@@genautelevishn5999 Indeed.
I joined the speedrunning community in 2018 and I never thought that this game would reach this point
That Action 52 Cheetahmen's theme in the backgrouhd tho
Time after time it's been said the category is dead. But now we're actually getting close
Literally, Niftski is the current AndrewG of our era. It's honestly crazy to see on how one single man can bring the game's times down to crazy levels, and also, sometimes, at a crazily fast pace.
The game has had 4 greats.
AndrewG, Darbin, Kosmic, Niftski.
All 4 of them are equally as important in SMB1 speedrunning history.
Who's andrewG
@@serbonkers4130 he's the og top SMB1 speedrunner and other games. He's been speed running for over a decade now. Just newer people has came to surpass him in SMB1 the last few years.
Great vid and also love the progress on your voice training!
What a crazy time to be a top SMB1 sppedruner. After decades of collectively optimizing the game, theyre now approaching times that can literally kill the speedrun
me and my little brother did speedrun on 8-1 back in the early/mid 90's... record time was 199, never got 200
I’m sure the reason he didn’t do fast accels in 8-4 as to intentionally not kill any%speedruns
Honestly i don't think it's gonna be dead until someone gets a TAS perfect speedrun. It sounds impossible but we're so close it's not really out of range at this point
If you only need get within 21 frames it's very very possible
possibly but a flawless 5 minute run is realy unlikely @@DanielSong39
The run has been perfected in two segments (reaching 8-4 and frame perfect 8-4) it would be weird if stringing together just two segments in such a popular game never happened in a full game run.
@@solsystem1342 Once the speedrunners get within the 21 frame rule in all segments they might move on to another game or to warpless
Once the runners realize you have to start running in 2nd gear the 4:50 barrier will fall.
Man, we really do need to stop thinking like game is set, and start thinking with the human element 😅
The notion than some hidden feature has been there all these decades and nobody noticed is hilarious, but stranger things have happened!
Wouldn’t be surprised if someone found some previously unknown trick that allows another speed up though. Speedrunning is full of “after 30 years Don Smizzle found you can skip the first wall by throwing your controller into a black hole at a precise angle”.
The issue in this game is that due to the frame rules, time can only be saved in longer increments (I think it's .3 seconds?) so the only real time saves are if you can squeeze out that much time on a specific level OR if it's on 8-4. I don't wanna say it can't happen, but we're getting pretty close to the end of the line on time saves.
@@SuperAmazingJaredYou're ruining his joke with your technical babble. 🤫
So, just throw the console into the black hole too in order to get only a few seconds.
@@SuperAmazingJared If I understood Kosmic correctly, there is a level where there is literally only 1 frame left to save in order to drop a framerule. So that might somehow be doable.
@@SuperAmazingJared Unless there is sth like a trick to skip an entire level. Think outside the box. ;)
hey just wanna to say that the voice training is going really well! also, glad to see you uploading again
and fuckin hell niftski is inhuman. I dunno how that man does it, actually fucking absurd
I really enjoy the pacing of your videos. Nicely done!
It’s weird to think that humans will eventually match the perfect theoretical time. Its not a matter of if, only when.
To be fair, that's the case for any game.
It’s most definitely not the case for any game, look at the Minecraft TAS, look at the super Mario odyssey tas, even games as active as those humans are so far away and likely will never tie the tas, now think of all the dead categories where the tas has over 80+ frame perfect tricks, most games aren’t close or as optimized as this gam.
Also humans won’t even tie the tas in warpless
@@jayure1346 "Never" and "a very long time" are two very different things.

Niftski knows he can get a sub 4:54
Not without L+R, which is banned.
@@LukeSawardeven then it’s not possible. No time saves have been found in over a decade
honestly at this rate it feels like it'll be a matter of if the TAS can match Niftski
I can’t wait for Niftski to do L+R runs!
He won’t sorry buddy
Not with that attitude he won't
If he does, it'd be in the category extensions
He’s apparently gotten an 8-4 faster than the 8-4 record, using l+r, so you never know
Regardless of if we get an unbeatable world record, people will still run SMB to see how close they can get. It's too iconic of a game for people to stop playing it.

Is it possible to modify the code to wear every single frame on every single level matters and then we can have a whole new category of speed runs
Every frame counts %
yes, it already exists in fact, but no one cares about it 'cause it just makes the game "fast accel: the game"
Who would want to wear that?
Yes, of course, and perhaps that's the direction SMB speed running will go once the game is 100% optimized. Could also add a category where "illegal" inputs are allowed such as what is used in some of the TAS implementations.
warpless and 2j are better@@Zerbey
smb will dead when nifski got 4:54.265
havent watched that much of warpless speedruns how close to perfect are they?
@@enio3698a few seconds, all framerules are extremely difficult
Warpless wr is 18:54 and the tas is 18:36 (human theory tas is 18:38) human sob is 18:39 and getting 18:40 in a full run is much harder than 4:54.265
@@jayure1346 Damn what causes such a huge difference?
Ms., its amazing how often I go rummaging for a speedrun video just to find out you posted a new one 🥰
I mean, even if the fastest possible run does get achieved, everyone's still going to have their own limitations and still try to go for and improve their personal bests, so I don't see it ever being fully 'done'
"there are still 22 frames" words of a madman. It's over.
Is there any other game out there that's this close to perfection?
If we just pulled out frame rules, the category would come back to life.
I can’t believe it’s already been a month
Love the cheetah men theme song you chose lol
Thank you for not using the bus analogy.
7:01 omg it’s the sarahspeedrun cameo
incredible how the TAS can match Niftski
after the any% is destroyed, next should be a speedrun speedrun: optimizing the time it takes to learn the perfect speedrun
no, smb speedruns aren't dead yet, we're just witnessing the final stretch towards oblivion and the race is on :) Even then, we'll probably find some new strategies to make runs even more consistent and maybe new categories will be born like any% both quests where you gotta go through the harder second quest as well.
Is there any arbitrary code execution possible in this game ? Feel like that can sometimes shake up any% runs (ocarina of time for example)
there is using a cart swap, tho it's not humanly possible in the slightest
Is there some way to glitch out the system like the super 3 speed run?
Removing that framerule would keep this category alive for a few more decades. There are already romhacks that remove level transitions.
inb4: next world record is without lightning 4-2 but with perfect 8-4
Time to move along now
We're reaching the end of an era. The limit ceiling is about to be touched.
So how come they don’t frame boost on blocks that are floating by hugging the corner? It pushes you forward… unless that falls in the mentioned 21 frame rule
it's not a thing in SMB1
thats only for smm2 physics lol
Since this is the third video I saw on this topic in 5. Years I'd say nope they'll find more buck wild things.
other categories exist you know
Nice video bro
"Many people like to use the analogy of framerules being like bus stops" => *doesn't elaborate furthers*

One day someone will get a perfect run and blow everyone away
So when are speedrunners going to move on to a rom hack that removes framerules so they can keep optimizing
never

Speed runners dont like that it any game
After the fastest human possible time it’s time to allow controllers modified for simultaneous left + right inputs

I bet new tech will be found eventually
Maybe you could save time somewhere by clipping into ground? Idk, just an optimization suggestion.
😑
@@irishjet2687 What? It was just a suggestion
Once 8-4 is perfected any% will be completed but the game wouldn’t be done yet as there is still warpless with 6 levels perfected as 1-2 and 4-2 are played differently as you go for the flag instead of the warp zone meaning there are 26 levels left to prefect for a warpless run
Do the speedruns in mixed reality 😎👍
Human beings when they make 1s and 0s change 1 computer tick faster than before: 😯
I feel this speedrun is dead, since it's only being Niftski beating his own record. There's also like 3 chances(can't think of a proper word) left for a record holder (not counting ties). What I mean is, if this record gets beaten, and the next record gets beaten, and the next record gets beaten.. I'm pretty sure at this point the record would of reached human Limit.
I’m not well versed in the rules of speed run rules, but aren’t you supposed to use original hardware, meaning that you need to use the original controller?
"It's surprisingly easy to beat smb in under 5 minutes."
Didn't the god Ryukahr take a couple of days to get there? Or was it 4:55? If the former, then far from surprisingly easy!
Everyone knows Tavo Betancourt is just biding his time to beat Niftski AND the TAS
If somebody eventually, one day, gets a perfect any% run on Super Mario Bros 1, I wonder if anyone else would have the motivation to tie that world record with how difficult it is, if they can no longer be the first person to do it? I mean, I guess if they're already incredibly close but get beaten to the punch, they might just decide in for a penny, in for a pound, but otherwise? I think I would be surprised. I imagine that getting a perfect run in any% glitchless would be easier to accomplish?
I bet badabun could do all this while eating pizza
see you in two years when someone finds some weird currently unknown trick
“Are they dead” is also my response when someone doesn’t talk about their favorite topic for .2 nanoseconds. Give it some time and it’ll come back.
I always think it’s over but then some new god comes around. This time for sure though
Are there any dead games
we're finally almost there lol. then we can let it die

"He did what we once thought was impossible"
Dude, that's like the 1 billionth time I hear that line with speed run of that game. Just you wait, next week someone will find a way to lower it by 1 second and the process will start all over again.
Nah man you don't understand. I have been following this shit for years now, techniques that were considered ridiculously difficult and only able to be performed by machines 5 years ago are required and no longer even the most important part of the run. 5 years ago, nobody thought this would ever be done, it was a pipe dream. You don't know
No one has found a new time save in this game for over 10 years, with the exception of a single frame in 8-4. Every single time save that’s been implemented in the run over recent years has been known about for over a decade. All the progress that’s been made in RTA runs have been from finding human viable ways to do them.
it didnt happen, why did you lie :(
before i watch:
any% is dead but 100% has alot of room to improve
Man, the idea of a game being dead speed run wise is strange. Does this mean that people will no longer run the game at all? Is there any other game that has been 100% killed and is no longer ran anymore?
Flappy Bird any%
That's when i saw her face
And then we wrongwarp 1-1 to 8-4 and none of this matters
It's Joever
They’ll probably find another skip or something one day, wouldn’t doubt it
Fast 4-2 went he blazeit
Maybe it's time to start counting the sum of frames on each level instead of total time.
there are better categories to speedreun than to do that
as much as I like smb1 any%, I would certainly not call it "a constantly evolving category" lol
fast
~EvaTheWingdale
I have known the framerule system for a long time but just now thought about why is is 21 frames and not any other number and I came to the the worst most logical explanation that the programmers counted from 0 to 20 (or in reverse) and had a frame for both 0 and 20 so instead of counting 20 frames as intended they had an off by 1 error and counted 21. Please tell me this is not the correct explanation and there is a better explanation.
Damn....this is getting more heated than Death Valley. 4 54 being the best you can get, and 4 54.2 being the theoretical perfect run, this truly is an enigma, isn't it? Honestly, to Niftski & all other any% runners of SMB1, I wish you the utmost of luck, breaking the barriers.
you forgot about gaster's 4:54.01, 1 frame from another second barrier
😮 link?
not possible, even with tas precision
I feel like when the tas is tied, the best thing to do is change the timing method. Instead of going off real time, only time the duration the player has control. So frame rules wouldn’t matter anymore and there would actually be some movement. But I don’t know that much about the game so it’s totally possible it wouldn’t be that much of a difference.
That would be annoying to time and kinda stupid for such a short run
Nope, look at Doom and its timing.
IF the tas is tied
I said it 3 years ago, I'm still gonna say it now: This category will be perfected within the 2020s.
But this time I have a bold new claim: We will also see a sub 18:45 RTA warpless run happen in the 2020s.
sub 18:50 mayybe
I wonder if this will turn into CPU cycle optimization eventually to reduce the total time taken.
This kinda already happened in the past, with trying to delete lag frames, but this is trivial compared to all of the TAS tricks these people pull off in these runs
Imagine a bus
8:35
