I had the same discovery set from Une Nuit Nomade that I shared with my girlfriend. They have some good stuff. Highlights for me were Ambre Khandjar, Jardins de Misfah, and Suma Oriental.

Your assessment of the house is spot on, as these fragrances are SO complex that they need time on skin to reveal themselves fully. It took me months to appreciate the full development of Salome, which is one of my favorite fragrances(I still only have a sample), and while I’ve been recently sampling Epona, I still prefer Salome as I really love the florals. Bengale Rouge was much too cinnamon forward for me, but I now wish I hadn’t sold my samples as I’ve seen how my nose has developed over time to appreciate things i didn’t like. One from the house I’d like to smell is Spell 125. While it often is considered to be the worst Papillon, I’m really into pine/conifer/incense fragrances right now, and the story behind this one is really alluring. Really looking forward to hearing your thoughts as you develop a relationship with these! Thanks as always for a great video.

Another great review, and you've reminded me to dig out Bengale Rouge and my samples of Liz's early work. I really liked Dryad but at the time I preferred Francesca Bianchi's scents a bit more so plumped for her.

I can appreciate the latter as well, but as you point out, your approach is more useful. I’ve been curious to check out Papillon for a few years now, notably Anubis, Bengale Rouge and Tobacco Rose. Based on your first impressions I think I’m going to have to bump those up to the short list. Keep up the great work!

Salome has some batch problems. My sample was very animalic, then I ordered a bottle and it was almost watered down. I returned my first Salome bottle and requested another. The second bottle was amazing and animalic.

I love Anubis too!You know when Liz created a fragrance, she used samples on herself, employees, friends, family members even her children, to see how it works on different skins .And she made many adjustments based on the results. That's why the fragrance blotter smells different from the skin. Also I highly recommend you to try Hera.It's such a iris masterpiece.
The paper vs. skin "dilemma" happened to me a while ago while trying Santal Austral by Matiere Premiere. But the other way around, loved it on paper but on my skin it became super abrasive. Never happened to me before that a scent smelled starkly different on my skin.

That's why I started to question test strips back in 2016. 🤔 And was pretty vocal about it. 😆 At the very least use a smunnel; but even then, I was always exasperated by fragrance impressions off of paper. I can only hope I made enough of a fuss back in the day for reviewers to finally start spraying on skin around 2020. 😊 I get that some want to spray exclusively on clothing; but it's still a different experience in the sillage. Tons of variables that can render a scent indistinguishable. Appreciate the vid Dan!
@@justaddlight it really depends on the the frag tbh, most fresh, synthetic designers kind of smell the same wherever you put them. But some more animalic notes almost never work on textile or paper.
I at first got amber and incense from Anubis and only later picked up the florals. And now I can’t believe I missed the leather, but it wasn’t there for me at first. Every wear is a bit different from me. Thanks for the review.

I own 5 Papillon fragrances, and yes, QC is an issue. Several can with the juice level noticeably reduced, 3 have frosted caps and the rest are clear, and two caps are VERY difficult to remove. But… the smells are definitely worth it 😁

Liz Moores creations does however, and some of her papillon offerings are among the very few in my rather large collection I actually re-purchase when I run out.

Well Daniel, these are the 2 that I have. After getting decants and spending 1 year with them, I was ready to buy full bottles. After I ran out of my Anubis decant, I was thinking about it months later, so I knew that it was full bottle worthy. Also, the old bottles had clear plastic caps that matched the glass bottles better as they looked like glass. I'm not sure why they changed to frosted caps. Thanks.

I am glad you got these! Such a pity that Brexit with its policy severely prevented and limited Papillon to be widely distributed within continental Europe. Anyhow...it is interesting how people have different expectations and reactions when a fragrance is publicized as a sex scent; is it before coitus? during? after? Liz had in mind the odor of heated skin after exhaustion and she got it right with almost a reverse piramyd than Bal a Versailles...the other sex scents (the various musks we talked so much....Koublai Khan, Tonkin, even Ravageur are meant to envelope you in a sort of preliminary seduction. The only thing I see as comparable to Salome is not Under my skin (far more tamed than my 2016 Salome), but perhaps Aperture by Ulrich Lang about which none talks about. Anubis is my favourite...it is one of the four perfumes I own two bottles. I know I am very biased, but try to sample Tobacco Rose, Spell, and even Dryad, while one can truely fully appreciate Hera only if one has a very hard soft spot on vintages (my second favourite). Request: will you be able to talk more about Les Indemodables (see if I may get a thrid bottle) and also about Eris Parfumes, perhaps in the speed format? Cheers

I ordered a free sample of anubis along with others with my frag order and it was a scrubber for me. I'm fairly new to frags and anubis came of like tirefire, I don't understand why anyone would want to smell like that. Perfumes supposed to smell pleasant and anubis wasn't it. Maybe in the near future i'll learn to appreciate it.

I feel mixed (bittersweet) feelings in this video. You probably own Bat old formula but another artisan perfume house worth sampling is Olympic Orchids. Night Flyer is in their line since the reformulation but the crown of the selection is Woodcut imo. It's one woman show as well.

Papillon fragrances are flat on paper. Kills the animatics . Salome on paper smells quite pleasant on my skin it smells like sweaty underwear. Not sure I could wear it around family members !

Bengale Rouge is really really good, on skin it's even better and warmer. Beautiful stuff, definitely on my purchase list.

I like this house! I think Salome (a Chypre fragrance) and Hera (Iris in there!) are top picks 😊 you’ll probably end up liking Salome

I have both, my advice is to spray on a relatively warm day and they'll open up nicely. It's all about the dry down (1 hour in)

Papillon fragrances are flat on paper. Kills the animatics . Salome on paper smells quite pleasant on my skin it smells like sweaty underwear. Not sure I could wear it around family members !
@@fabiojungle4722 I still need to wear this one to the office; although I am fairly certain that in the air it’s MUCH more palatable, I’m still kind of worried 😅
