I will do Canario+Neely or similar level of pitcher for Luzardo.

How many Lefty starting pitchers do we need on one team? Steele, Imanaga, Boyd, Luzardo? And where does that leave us in the Sasaki sweepstakes?
Best case scenario I can see for Luzardo is to migrate him to the bullpen and transform him into a late inning guy, -someone nasty like, I don’t know, Brailyn Marquez! Oh wait…

Busch has enough power to hit 30+ HR and 30+ doubles every year AT WRIGLEY. Bellinger is a nice player, but his power clearly does not translate to Wrigley...and Busch costs pennies to Belli's overpaid dollars. Get a bullpen or two future bullpen guys for Belli from the Yankees and take the savings, while clearing up the OF spots and some room for top prospects (Caissie, Alcantara, Canario...whomever they are keeping)

My one concern for the cubs is that while they play match on some trades and wait to see who blinks that they will pigeon toe themselves for financial reasons before addressing the backend of the bullpen and thus later left with fewer good options. If I am thinking as management and knowing common financial restraints and value considerations ; I find it hard to believe they will really go after Luis Castillo. Jesus Luzardo may not be everyone’s choice via injury background or left handed dominant rotation; but he is more easily trade possible in value of giving up, financial flexibility, and timeline for 2026 on many contracts going off the board. With the Kyle Tucker trade I don’t see any reason the Cubs would now seek a Nico Hoerner trade for similar reasons as Luzardo but from the cubs prospective in value and cost especially if Bellinger is moved as expected. The thought process of making him available was to obtain a basher and possibly financial flexibility. I doubt now the cubs would entertain 2 rookies in a makeshift infield while giving up defensive metrics they seem to like. They just improved the outfield defense; I just can’t see them giving up the infield defense now and their ability to be flexible if Bellinger does get traded and Matt Shaw struggles at 3B and or 2nd defensively; it would be easier covering one infield position liability; and lets be honest, even with the addition of Tucker this is not a top 5 or 10 batting offense. They have a very solid rotation that could in time grow more solid depending on their moves and that relies on the defense. But back of the bullpen needs addressed before it is too late. I do hope Seiya Suzuki stays and can accommodate DH with some rotation but for the cubs needs and flexibility it would not at all surprise me if both Bellinger and he are the two that get traded to add pieces in value and financial flexibility as the cubs gear up to get money off the books for 2026 and give where possible some farm players a call up in plugging in to where maybe “knock on wood” they would be serious at an extension whether season or more likely free agency with Tucker.

  • @Mike-G-15
    @Mike-G-15 Місяць тому +2

I keep hearing Cubs eating $10M of the Bellinger contract, but I think this would be out of the total remaining $52.5M for both years. So basically Cubs would eat $5M of the $27.5M in 2025, and then if he does opt out Cubs would cover the $5M buyout that would hit 2026 payroll or beyond (i think buyouts can be spread). If Bellinger were to opt in again next year, Cubs would cover $5M of the remaining $25M again in 2026. So either way it would be $5M from Cubs both years, not $10M in 2025. Yankees would be taking on $22.5M in 2025 and $20M in 2026 (if he opts in) or $0 in 2026 if he opts out. I think something close to this is where this will land and is fair for both sides.

If they are looking at Jesus Luzardo, then I have to wonder if they are trading someone else in the rotation.
I can't imagine they would go with 4 lefties in the rotation. So unless Luzardo is going to be a setup man or closer in the pen, I am confused as to why this would happen.
I am not sure what he is making, only that I know I wouldn't want to give up too much.
Also, hell no on Owen Caissie. There is no freaking way I would be okay with that one. I don't care if they switch him to LF or DH, Caissie should be firmly a part of this team's future.
I wouldn't have a problem with Jordan Wicks and James Triantos or Canario.
Owen Caissie is the hell no.
As for the Cody Bellinger trade with the Yankees. There is no damn way if I were Jed Hoyer that I would be okay with that.
If the Yankees wanted to split the difference at 5 million, that is liveable. I know 5 million doesn't sound like a big difference, but it matters in between having 17 million or 22 million in additional money to spend. That flexibility matters.
Especially with not wanting to go over the luxury tax, at least to start the 2025 season. Now, they might do it at the trade deadline if the team is in contender status. Until then, I do think they are serious about staying under the luxury tax.

Their goal this off season is to open two spots for the prospects: one infield and one outfield. That’s why they are looking to trade Hoerner and Cody/Suzuki.
Now that they opened one infield spot by trading Paredes, they just need to trade one of Cody or Suzuki.
They will give Shaw every chance to play next year, so I really doubt they would go for a big contract for an infielder. But if they happen to trade two of three above players, then they might go for Alonso (as DH) or Bregman (3rd base)

Bregman will fill a need at 3rd base and he is a much clutch hitter that Cubs needs in post season. If we got out of Suzuki and Cody’s contracts and Cassie will replace Happ eventually, I don’t mind sign him for 7 years. Only if we got out of all 3 contracts Suzuki Cody and Nico. Especially we are not going to resign them in 2027. I think if you can trade Triantos or Alcantara for Luzardo, then trade Hoerner (to Seattle for Harry Ford +), it opens 2B for Shaw. You are thin at 3B, but you did just get the Rule 5 prospect. That would be a lot to ask from a guy coming from AA though. Going back to the Marlins deal, that's why an Alcantara works better, be cause you would have a bit bigger (though still unproven) safety net of Triantos at 2B and Shaw at 3B, with the Rule 5er (Gage Workman) able to give a little depth.

Cannot just look at last year's struggles and say what are we doing, regarding Luzardo. You can say the exact same thing regarding Bellli. If Busch or Shaw or Suzuki struggle or get hurt? What is the option? Another AAA guy? Bellli played on healed broken ribs and fingers with the wind blowing straight in on a lot of games. Belli fills all OF gaps and can go to 1st if Busch gets plunked with a broken wrist for 8 weeks. Plus he's better at first base anyway. We need offense and defense options and the answer is not some AAA dude who looks like he might rake. Matt Mervis was that guy recently. And do we need 4 starting lefties? I don't think so. Your best team is Tucker and Happ and PCA in the OF. Cody and Nico and Swanson, good. Shaw has to field bullets and make accurate throws and hit. Put him at 3rd and let's see. Or Busch goes to 3rd. Get Shaw some PT a couple days a week and let him get his feet wet plus he can play 2nd in Japan as you said. Which means in May, Busch is riding some pine but he's depth for 1st and 2nd and 3rd. Or Shaw is your swing guy and move him around like Ben Z.

Since he is coming over from Japan and below the age of 25, it's the same as an international free agent where a team can only give them an allocation of their international pool money - this will be somewhere between $5-7M, and every single team (including Cubs) will be willing and able to spend it which is why basically every team is "in" on him. After he is signed, he is the same as any other rookie where he has 6 years of team control - first 3 at minimum salary and last 3 via arbitration salaries. So the Sasaki pursuit is not like bidding on a normal FA.
I do agree with the first part of your comment though. I'm hoping the Luzardo deal is for nothing more than Triantos (even that will sting). But Luzardo does have immense upside at only $6M (projected) next year with another year of control after that. I think we would need to view the 4th and 5th rotation spots as a mini 3-way rotation between Boyd, Luzardo, and Assad to best manage the innings of all 3.
Lastly I'm probably in the minority but I think they should take a hard look at Alex Bregman now. After trading Bellinger and even after absorbing Luzardo's projected salary (if those moves happen), Cubs will still have around $40M available to get to last year's payroll level. That's enough for Bregman at $27M AAV and 2 good bullpen arms. This would move Shaw back to his natural 2B and he doesn't have to be relied upon until fully ready. When he is deemed ready, that's when you consider trading Nico again. Having Bregman would also be a positive factor in eventual Tucker negotiations next year, and might even be one that could help break ties...

@ I have no issue with any of you points and I do understand how the Sasaki deal works, but the Cubs have 2 Japanese players that could have some influence and the Cubs always seem to be twiddling their thumbs. You know the Dodgers have their Japanese guys on it. The Padres have Darvish as an influence. Sasaki can be gotten. Yes, they went out and got Tucker, but Ricketts is the cheapest Billionaire when it comes to paying players. I have to question if he will even let Hoyer or whomever is in charge by then make a serious offer. I hate when wealthy teams pretend they can’t spend. I’m not saying the Cubs should be the Dodgers. They are bad for baseball in my opinion, but they aren’t even top 10 payroll and Chicago is a huge market. Wrigley is packed with fans who support the Cubs win or lose. There is no excuse not to spend.

@@jennifertimlin1371I completely agree with everything you said about them not spending as much as they should. I just initially thought you were linking that to the Sasaki pursuit, so we're on the same page. They have been praised in recent years for their presentations to international free agents, especially from Japan, so we'll see what happens there.

Essentially a 4 team trade. Cubs send Bellinger and 8M to NY. Cubs Send Nico to Seattle. Cubs send Jordan Wicks and Brett Bateman to Philly. Seattle sends Castillo to the Cubs and Michael Arroyo to the Phillies. Philly sends Bohm to the Cubs. Yankees send prospect outside their top 15 to Philly. The money would even be about the same.

One thing you need to know from a GM perspective, they really need to under the tax this season, cause after this season, they will be over tax for some time! Especially next year , when they need to sign Tucker to 40+m long term deal. One creative thing they can do is to extend him with a 400m contract and then let him have an opt out in 2027. That way he can have insurance and a chance to make bigger money if the market goes up.

And you name drop our RF of the future for an injury gamble pitcher. Our stud RF is gone after next year. Now you have a hole in RF too. How about doing actual future team planning and avoiding log jams and glaring holes. Jed has done a horrible so far, and your suggestion is horrible too.
