Tell me your experience with collaborating, do you have any horror stories? Or tell me the best person you ever worked with! I'm joined again by my producer Jenny May Finn and this time we're filmed by Bobby from Bad Nerves!

    This is the best podcast yet. Jenny May Finn is the best interviewer I have ever seen. The fact she challenges him and Justin enjoys the challenge shows the character of both of them. If anything happens due to the alleged history of X let us actively be there for Jenny on social media and protect this gem of a woman if she needs it.

    Leaving one's ego at the door, as you get into a co-write, is probably the no. 1 prerequisite for a succesful collaboration. Also, with regards to splits, with my collaborators there is a long established understanding, that even splits is the way to go. Did the whole, who wrote this and that, counting words or lines silliness when I was fourteen. It goes to the very core of collaborating, itself - the song is a result of being in it together. Who's to say, what makes the song great, rather than good?
    Oh, and the song is king...always.
    And, I'll stop, right here... could be loooooooong.... 😃

    The idea of “framing” is important. A song written for David Bowie but sung by John Anderson may have a completely different interpretation or “frame” on the public sphere. Consider The Pet Shop Boys singing “You Were Always On My Mind”, by Willie Nelson. The framing, or artistic presentation of the song, takes on a completely different public display per their musical stylings.

    I believe in a thing called Unanimity. The larger the group of collabs, the harder it is to reach a unanimous agreement. I think it's fair to agree if one person dissents, it doesn't happen. If everybody likes what's happening, then the chances of it being good and worthwhile are improved.

  • @forestramsey8972
    @forestramsey8972 8 місяців тому +1

    I've had plenty of collaborations that didn't work (because nothing came of it.) But mostly things work well. I can get a song together by myself, but it usually gets interesting when other folks bring their ideas in. I've always been super-lenient about crediting too, which I suppose is easy when there's no money attached. But I was that way when I was delusional enough to think that there would eventually be money in it. Just anyone who contributes gets a share. 3 guys? Split 3 ways. Whole band? Split 4 ways. A friend who was hanging out jumps in with an idea? 5 ways. And I say this as the guy who was putting down 80%+ of the lyrics and progressions. Sometimes even wrote the bass lines and so on.
    I think one of the greatest benefits of collaborators though, is when they are willing to help edit. Sometimes I will wander off down a rabbit hole and make something silly. Having friends you play with who are willing to say, "dude...that's starting to suck," is invaluable.

For comments day, as someone who has followed your career very closely since 2003, in my opinion some of the greatest songs you have ever written would include Cupboard Love, Dinner Lady Arms, Out Of My Hands, Love Is Not The Answer, Heart Explodes, Speed Of The Nite Time, to name a few. Following the lyrics to Cupboard Love which I believe is an English saying meaning insincere love. I guess I was just wondering what the song is about? Was there a particular story the song touched on?
