Joey - What seals the deal for me in favor of the Council Tools is the hardened poll. That feature alone really puts the Council Tools Pack Axe in a class by itself.
You’re absolutely right man, I couldn’t have said it better myself !!! Council tool did an amazing job with this axe … they really did creat the ultimate bushcraft / woodcraft axe !!
Ah, the nuances of axe ology. The resistance of Inanimate mass, the resistance of gravity, the efficiency of the movement of mass. Perpetual energy applied efficiently in movement.
I love ❤️ them both, having an axe is the part of my culture, I own Forest axe and Hatchet 🪓 from Husqwarna.Having a good hatchet for camping ⛺️ is basically essential. I love nature and just simple tools, but of good and decent quality. You just need a knife some string and you can make bow and arrow 🏹 to take down rabbit 🐇 or a bird 🐦,just practice and be patient…
Thank you so much for watching !!! Same here it’s honestly impossible for me to pick between either of these axes. I believe I may lean more we toward the Husqvarna more times than not because it’s not only a great little axe, but for the sentimental value as well because it was a gift from my girl friends and my bother and it was my first “forest axe” !! Being in nature is my happy place even if it’s just going for a nice walk !! Thank you so much again for watching 👍
Those are some nice lookin axes my friend👍 If I had to pick it would probably be the husky just because of the handle length and practicality for light forestry work and limbing. Those Swedish patterns slice the wood really well. Council tool would no doubt make the better camp tool. A little stouter head makes it a better splitter and with a shorter length handle it makes a great axe for mounting on a pack. Like you said, they both do really well in different areas. Neither makes a bad axe. Husky vs the CT boys axe would make a more interesting comparison if you’re looking for ideas. They both fit the same niche. My money would be on the CT. Nice vid!
Couldn’t have said it better my self Codi !! Thanks man that’s a great idea I can def do that. I feel like either one especially the husq would make a good side axe to a full size felling axe. For instance if I went out to do a big tree with my jersey for all the big heavy work and to save my arms a bit use the husq. For the limbs and top part of the tree. Thanks for watching man !!!
Good job Joey! Cheers for making this one, was cool to see the CT do some work. Pretty impressive wood processor for an out of the box bushcraft axe. Its pricier and I wouldn't want to go any shorter on the handle, but it seems like it lives up to its name. Sweet!👍👍
Thanks Kurt, yeah man I was very impressed with the capability of the CT out of the box. It is a little pricey and for that I definitely think it should have at least a 26 inch handle. It’s with just 2 inches less at 24 it just feels a bit wonky idk it’s hard to explain. Thanks for watching man !!
Awesome, I love my camp axe by council tools, 2lbs head, mostly got it for camping an it fits on my pack, great splitter an chopper as well, some say handle is too short, but with in reasonable tall stump to split wood or in a knelt position, makes really nice clean cuts
Thank you so much for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed the video !!! Totally agree I absolutely love this axe, I ended up making another video with it along side of the husq. In that video I’m using the council tool pack axe but I re hung it on a 26” straight handle !! I will also agree depending on its usage 24” is plenty usable especially for camping making it more packable. When you’re camping your not really doing and heavier work and extended amount of bucking so that 24” is great … I think council tool did an awesome job on this axe. Thanks again for checking out the video 👍
For what it’s worth your, notches were cleaner the second day with the CT. Probably due to the short handle. My test is take two axes out to chop with and see which one I end up using the most. That’ll tell you which one cuts best in what would for what tasks.
Thanks Kevin!! I think you’re onto something here lol .. longer handle in accuracies are amplified by the time it reaches the end of the stick. Yeah man I’ll definitely have to do that maybe I’ll process this hole tree I have in the woods that’s about to go down from a lot of damage from the last storm we had. I’ll take out both axes or any 2 of my favorite and see which one I use most. I’m excited to try out the HB Montreal I feel like she’s a winner … but to be completely honest I don’t know if it’s because it was my first axe but the woodslasher boys axe is still the one I grab first. I’m going to have to give the others a fighting chance soon. 👍
I believe that they were targeting the small forest and the Scandinavian and just put one in the middle.I unfortunately don't have the council tools woodcraft so I've no dog in the fight
Absolutely I couldn’t agree more !! I think the CT pack axe is great and very useable at that length and for some it’s the perfect length. I suppose I was just more use to using a slightly longer handle. After I spent more time with it, it became more comfortable to me. Since then I did hang it on a 26” straight handle and made another video revisiting this comparison 👍
Good video, I been wanting a new axe for long time now. I already own a husqy but can’t decide to buy either a grandfurs or a the pack axe. Your video was the comparison I needed for the most part.
Thank you so much !! I’m really happy to hear I was able to help and make some sort of impact. I wanted to make a more in-depth video on just the council tool maybe I’ll do one in the future because I really do love the way it chops. Or if you want I can always send you a short video directly through messenger if you want something a little more in-depth !! Thanks again for watching 👍
The camera can't really pick it up, but sometimes you can make out the axe head whistling through the air. There is no replacing the feeling one gets from the use of fine hand tools.
Oh man I know exactly what you’re taking about !! I love when you hear the axe make that whistling noise as it’s traveling, it’s so cool !! Funny you bring that up I have a clip on my phone from a video I never posted and it’s the perfect example of that noise !! Thank you so much for watching and for sharing the appreciation for these awesome tools 👍
Nice looking axes. The Husqvarna is just not a good splitter, its too thin and light. It has a tendency to cut the wood instead of splitting it. In my experience to make it split it needs to be backed up. Its just a lightweight axe designed for chopping.
Thank you !! Yeah absolutely, i love the axe either way it has a great feel to it. I’m honestly surprised how much work it can do with how light it is.
Thank you so much for watching !! Yeah man you’re not kidding !! Actually my very first one tree challenge was a pretty decent sized cherry and quite possibly only my 3rd times using an axe … needless to say I got my butt handed to me that day, but I learned a lot and finished the job 👍 oh yeah I absolutely love both of these axes it’s truly hard to pick which one I like more !!
It's all handle length and head weight. Long handle and heavy head puts more force on impact. Shorter handle and lighter head is more packable. What is the difference between the two? You may be comparing Apples and Oranges there.
Thanks for watching !! I can’t remember if I gave any specs in the video or not. The husqvarna is a 26” handle with a 1.8lb head and the council tool is a 24” handle with a 2lb head. Both axes are great and in their own way. Even though the council tool is slightly heavier being shorter it’s much more packable and having that heavier head makes it very efficient even with a shorter handle. Where the husq. Is slightly lighter the extra length helps create a little more energy in the swing to make up for the lighter head also being very efficient. I ended up revisiting this comparison and to make it more fair I hung the council tool head on a 26” handle. Thank you so much again for checking out my video 👍
Congratulations on a good thorough review. What is the price of each of these axes where you live, here in BC Canada the Husqvarna is much cheaper than the Council Tool Axe. The Council Tool Axe hiked up its price significantly (more than doubled) since it launched and is comparable with axes that have been regarded as top quality based upon years of use in the field. CT have indeed carefully considered the various functions that a 'Bushcraft' axe is required to perform and covers them quite well, I do think the shaft would need to be 2 or 3 inches longer with that weight of head and to safely buck and split logs from the standing position. The head of the CT is reminiscent of old English Axes such as Elwell and Brades, a design that can be seen in some Scandinavian Countries and the Siberian Taiga Axe. The substantial, hardened poll will certainly appeal to the survivalist/ one-tool requirement, though nail driving is an activity that the 'Bushcraft purists' would shun. Finally, the 'phantom' bevels are interesting, but to be honest I haver never seen any hard evidence that they contribute to an axe not sticking, I think the edge grind profile does throw a better chip as you noted when bucking the logs (I have noted that my Toporsib Bobr Axe throws good chips with a similar edge geometry. Once again, thanks for a good review.
Wow !! Thank you so much for checking out the video, great comment. I want to apologize for the late reply. So as of now the Husqvarna cost 130 dollars and it’s council tool woodcraft pack axe is 170 dollars, both prices are before tax and shipping. Both are awesome axes and yes the CT has gone up considerably since it came out in 2015, in fact it’s increased 30ish dollars since I purchased mine. I think both axes and great !! The council tool does come with great features especially aimed toward the bushcraft community. I too believe the could have been a little longer, I would have liked to see it be the same 26” length as the Husqvarna. I understand they were trying to make it very packable yet capable of most every task which they did, it’s quite a capable axe but to me personally it’s a little awkward. If I was being completely transparent adding 2 more inches wouldn’t have made it less packable, I strap my Husqvarna to my back pack at 26” and I don’t find it to be an issue. I actually made another video revisiting this comparison but I actually hung the council tool on a 26” straight handle and I like it so much more now !! Thank you so much again for checking out my video, I hope you take the time to check out some of the others 👍
Do you know the exact head weight of the husqvarna I believe it's like 1.5pounds on a 26 inch handle.Ive owned mine for approx 4 years and I designated for a truck / emergency axe but I recently found a ton of videos saying that the axe has a bad history of breaking or chipping but mainly snapping where the husqvarna stamp is.I should know better but I should be testing all my bugout emergency equipment
Hey thank for checking out the video !! The exact head weight is 1.87 lbs so a little over 1 and 3/4 lb and a little under 2lb. I absolutely love my husq. Forest axe, I use the heck out of mine. Yes I’ve also heard the horror stories of the heads breaking and having poor quality control. So that was more so when they first came out I believe it was around 2015, so they made the stamp way too deep and make the bit very fragile in a high stress area and they also had an issue with air pockets in the metal as well. That has since been fixed most people I know that have this axe that bought it after the first 2 years of production haven’t had any issues, myself included.
This was a great video. I'm impressed with both although the CT fits my needs better and I already have one on order. I'd love to see the husky go against the CT Boys Axe which I think is a better test since they are more similar. I'd also like to see the CT Pack Axe go against the Gransfors Small Forest Axe. For me the choice for the CT Pack Axe is largely do to the hardened bit and poll, the possibility that it sticks less and the superior steel it's made with. I am going to subscribe and check out what you are doing. Thanks!
Thank you so much I really appreciate you checking this video out. It’s kind of funny that you saw this video today because I’m minutes away from up loading and updated review on the CT wood craft pack axe. I filmed it yesterday. I hope you get some time to check it out I’ll have it up shortly. The other comparisons you mentioned in your comment, I would absolutely love to do them I think they would be great .. and yeah I can definitely to a small forest axe vs wood craft pack axe. I’m also thinking Scandinavian forest axe vs. Husqvarna forest axe as well !! Thank you again I really appreciate it 👍
Thanks for watching !! So yeah I totally agree, but I also disagree and I think I need to revisit this review. So yes it could use a longer handle when it comes to more serious work. On the other hand after using the axe for a while I think it’s the perfect length of you are use the axe for its intended purpose as a bushcraft and camp axe. Sure with the 24” handle it’s totally capable of bigger work the axe if outstanding but yes a longer would help in that case to make it more comfortable to use. That being said I would just use a boys axe at that point or if I know I’m going to be processing wood or whole trees for fire wood I would def want at least a boys axe. Since this video I did put a little bit of a longer handle in this axe and I use the hell out of it !! It’s out in the woods with me all the time. They truly are awesome axes !! Council tool for the win hands down !!
When your cameraman was filming you felling the tree, he should stand on the other side where we can see you chop into the tree. It was horrible not being able to see the action.
Thanks for the heads up, I imagine he was just trying to get different angles. I’m not sure if you watched the whole video or not, but there are plenty of shots where you’re able to see the action. I apologize the video was what you hoped, but thanks for checking out the video anyway 👍
I’ll be completely honest I haven’t used it yet !!! It’s killing me I want to get out an chop with it. I’ve been so busy with work. I think I’m going to do a first impressions use vs. tuned up video on it soon. Do you have an agdor or are you interested in a review on one before you pull the trigger on it ?

@@outboardprsnlstndup hey man sorry forgetting back to you so late the place by me is called Pocono lake supply, in Pocono lake, Pennsylvania. @@940joey2 a brand new husqvarna? I appreciate the effort, and don’t worry about it not getting back, as I’m sure you’re busy. I really appreciate the effort, though. @@tested123 thank you so much !! I’m really happy you enjoyed the video !! I don’t know if you’re interested, but if you want check out my latest video I’m giving away an axe !!
Agreed !! I feel there’s just something so rewarding and special about using an axe. Don’t get me wrong I love my saws, but I have a lot more fun with an axe 👍 thank you so much for watching !! Also how do you like the katana boy is it with the price, I’ve been thinking about buying one.
I agree, I do think saws definitely have their place. In some situations I don’t think they’re as efficient as an axe such as this scenario. Then again there is some situations where a saw is absolutely a better option. I do plan to do a video on axe vs folding saw use and when and why I choose that particular tool. Thank you so much for watching 👍. I actually done own a silky which one do you recommend. Thinking of adding one to the arsenal.
Great video ! I know the CT was meant to be packable, but as I watched I couldn't help but wonder how it would perform with a longer handle, considering it has the heavier head weight between the two. It also seemed as though the CT was getting a better bite on the wood during bucking, whereas the Husky appeared to glance more often. I think the winner is the CT head on the Husky handle.
Thank you !! I couldn’t agree more. I was extremely happy with the performance on both axes, but yeah i bet the CT on a 26-27” handle with that 2lb head would be a beast … who knows maybe I’ll pop the head off that handle and make a video with a longer one. For now I guess I’ll keep it as my winter weekend hiking axe and light duty axe at the house. Thanks for watching !!

I see a blue Agdor , how do ya like it ?
I’ll be completely honest I haven’t used it yet !!! It’s killing me I want to get out an chop with it. I’ve been so busy with work. I think I’m going to do a first impressions use vs. tuned up video on it soon. Do you have an agdor or are you interested in a review on one before you pull the trigger on it ?
@@940joey2 , yeah definitely on my small “to get” list . Really like to see a review . What state are you in , I’m in WV. , just curious with the species of trees that I’ve seen in your videos .
@@buddyblankenship4186 yeah man I’ll definitely make one ASAP !! And I’m in Pennsylvania so should be very similar 👍
👍👍
Do you happen to know where one can still buy the husqy? Cant seem to find them online
They’re getting really hard to find, I haven’t seen them online at all. There is a husq. Dealer near me I can see if they have one. Are you in the U.S ?
@@940joey2 yes, waaaaay down south. But if you have their info ill surely contact them. Thanks very much.
@@outboardprsnlstndup hey man sorry forgetting back to you so late the place by me is called Pocono lake supply, in Pocono lake, Pennsylvania. I did check with them recently and they didn’t have any in stock at the moment I guess they’re having trouble getting them as well .. but I do have a lead on a brand new one of you were interested and possibly a bring new HB kisa which is the the same axe just supposedly a better fit and finish.
@@940joey2 a brand new husqvarna? I appreciate the effort, and don’t worry about it not getting back, as I’m sure you’re busy. I really appreciate the effort, though. I actually went on ebay and found a used one- of course when all said and done it was about price of new. Thankfully in good condition. How much are each of the ones you found?
@@outboardprsnlstndup you’re welcome, I feel bad I didn’t get back to you sooner. Yeah man I’m super busy work is crazy with so many people out of work, I do night shift and it’s usually 12-14 hour shifts 5 nights a week. The price on them are just the same as brand new from the store, well they are brand new from a store just not the store by me. I believe the husky is 130 and the hb is 189 or something close to that…. Honestly i know it sounds weird but my I think out of everything my husky is my favorite “light” axe !! I hope you enjoy yours man !!!
the camera man loves to stand in the most dangerous spots
He really does !! That’s my little brother 😂… thank you so much for watching !!
@@940joey2 you work like a beast. that was a perfect test that no one else has done. and ya...good camera work.
@@tested123 thank you so much !! I’m really happy you enjoyed the video !! I don’t know if you’re interested, but if you want check out my latest video I’m giving away an axe !!
My Silky Katanaboy would go through that tree with 1/10th the effort. Probably way less effort than that.
Agreed !! I feel there’s just something so rewarding and special about using an axe. Don’t get me wrong I love my saws, but I have a lot more fun with an axe 👍 thank you so much for watching !! Also how do you like the katana boy is it with the price, I’ve been thinking about buying one.
First?
A silky folding saw would help do some partial work on those logs.
Agreed!
