    Hey! I actually just performed my ignition Tumblr replacement. And i ran into the same problem once i first installed the tumbler. The key didn’t want to turn from the installation setting.
    I removed it again but i installed just the tumbler without the bezel. And it worked just fine. You just have to make sure it is seated all the way down in the tumbler cylinder.
    I then reinstalled and made sure to depress that little “hat” button as i was threading in the bezel. I seated it all the way. Removed the tool, and unthreaded the bezel till it clicked into place. And now it works just fine!
    I have to thank you for your video to show the process. I hope you had better luck with your key than I did. This one is oem from mercedes and the black plastic from the key fell off during installation! Not too happy about that. But it works fine now.

    Hi
    I changed mine and I did oil it well before installing the new ignition and I did change the electrical part that connects in the back insert where the cables are now my key does work but it’s very hard to turn and gets stuck at the starting position and keeps cranking the starter do you know what the problem could be ?

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  9 місяців тому

      The lock cylinder really doesn't need any oil to function correctly. If you are saying that the key remains engaged such that the starter continues to turn even after the engine has already started, that clearly is serious enough to remove the entire assembly once again and start over. The replacement parts may not be of good quality. Are they OEM Mercedes? I'm not sure if it's possible to install the electrical connector incorrectly but it sounds as though it might be. For questions like this there is a great W126 page on FB groups. (Mercedes Benz W126) In subsequent parts of this video series ultimately I determined that my original key needed to be replaced. I bought one from the local Mercedes dealer. They are still available.

    Kent, has made a video about this issue. Having to many keys hanging off the ignition switch key, doesn't help. Good luck 🤞

    Hi: can you please tell me how to pry off that small plastic panel around the tumbler (min 6:18) in your video. I try to remove it but do not want to break it or the wood around it.. The tumbler came out but not all the way because of the small panel around it..

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  Рік тому

      you have to remove the long wooden trim. That cover around the key is attached to it. I cover it in detail here: ua-cam.com/video/5WNUL1-tb1A/v-deo.html

      The trim on my car is broken that is why I can remove the little panel without removing the entire wood trim ha ha

      @@ImpalamansGarage Thanks... I had to pry it off, the small plastic broke... otherwise I could not get the tumbler out.. I will see if I can JB weld the plastic pin... Got lucky when the old tumbler was removed from collar, it was in two pieces.. Got the new one in.. Now debating whther I should change the locking mechanism as well.... I noticed with the new installed tumbler and new key (from dealer) it takes little bit more strength to get the key out compared to the old key and tumbler.. not sure if this is normal...

    • @ImpalamansGarage
      @ImpalamansGarage  2 місяці тому

      Are you using the original key? New ones are available from the Mercedes dealer if you give the parts department your VIN. These keys wear out.

      Part 2 might offer some guidance. Maybe you can leave the lock cylinder in place and remove it along with the steering lock assembly together. ua-cam.com/video/PUt4p_e0tJM/v-deo.html

    The resistance of the key going in is more likely the key being worn.
    The ignition switch itself is probably worn and needs replacing. Not repairable.
    Use your original cylinder on the new switch because that is also the door and trunk key.
    I've replaced lots of these on old American cars but never a Mercedes. The American cars did not have an outer sleeve like that. Just use a paper clip and turn one way or the other and pull the cylinder out with the key.
    Mercedes had to make it so most people would have to support their local mercedes dealer for simple stuff like this.
    Your lucky it's not on the steering column with a rod to the firewall where the switch is.

      Google part number 1266800065. Note the two plastic tabs on the left. This panel lifts out with a little prying. The tabs on mine are broken off. LOL.... I need a new one as well.
