Transforming Mobs Using Lightning! ▫ Minecraft Survival Guide (1.18 Tutorial Lets Play) [S2E71]

- The Minecraft Survival Guide Season 2 continues! Welcome to obscure mechanics week.
This tutorial will show you lightning in a whole new light! We start by exploring Skeleton Horse Traps, which have a small chance to spawn in surface biomes during a thunderstorm. They spawn four skeleton riders, but once they're dealt with, you have some very unique horses on your hands!
Back at spawn, we look at the other mobs - and one block - which can be transformed by lightning. See what happens to oxidised copper, villagers, turtles, mooshrooms, creepers, and pigs when we strike them with lightning!
We also take a quick look at the honey bottle farm, which I managed to get back in working order after redesigning the exterior to be kinder to bees' AI.

Just a good side note, skeleton horses are one of the few passive mobs that cannot be targeted by a Wither so these are very useful on servers where Withers are enabled and you might be traveling through an area where weather might be active but it won't Target you as long as you're on the horse.
Really? What happens when you shoot the wither while on the skelli horse? Will it aggro then?
@@gamingnscience unfortunately yes. So it's best to keep moving. This is very helpful mainly on Anarchy servers where griefing is commonplace, especially when Withers are used to do extreme terrain damage to prevent rebuilding.
As Undead Mobs, Skelly Horses are also subject to Smite Damage, so be careful there. Use Tamed Wolves to attack the Riders without harming the Skelly Horse. As Undead, Skelly Horses also take Damage from Healing Potions, but like all Horses, they can heal naturally over time. And while you can't Breed them, Wheat should Heal them as well.
If anyone is wonder how the mechanic works, a horse is classified as the primary entity when a player is riding one. Because Withers targeting system can only focus on living entities only in an area, and Withers will target non-hostile mobs first when spawned in, which is why fighting a Wither deep underground is the preferred method, or trapping it in the Bedrock of the Nether roof or End Portal is the safest way on Java, so when a player rides a skeleton horse up into the Wither's area of effect, the skeleton horse would become the target of the Wither first rather than the player. Because the Skeleton Horse is Undead, the Wither's targeting system will stay locked to the Skeleton Horse but unable to attack, and will end up confused unless acted upon. This however doesn't apply to other mobs which still target the player.
Skeleton horse mechanics: The trap can spawn at any time a regular lightning strike would occur, turning the actual lightning strike into a purely visual one that won't do any damage or cause the other effects seen later in this video. The chance for a regular lightning strike to instead spawn a skeleton trap is 0% on peaceful, 1% on easy, 2% on normal and 3% on hard. Skeleton trap horses despawn after exactly 15 minutes if the trap doesn't trigger.
When a player gets within 10 blocks of the trap horse, it triggers. That spawns another visual-only lightning and three additional horses. Each of the four horses gets a skeleton as passenger, which gets an iron helmet (unless it already spawned with a helmet) and both the skeleton's bow and helmet get enchanted. These skeletons are persistent (similar to the original witch generating with a witch hut or the illagers in a woodland mansion), i.e. even if their horses die first, they will not despawn.
That's wicked. Also, I kind of get the reference, and that is the 4 horsemen of Apocalypse. That's actually pretty neat of Mojang including in the game.
That skeleton horse footage was wild! Thanks for sharing it with us.
Lived on a mooshroom island on a previous survival world, I bred a bunch of brown mooshrooms because I really like the way they look. They look so kind somehow.
Obscure mechanic suggestion: Using a “Johnny” nametag on a vindicator causes them to become hostile to all other mobs, but friendly to players. I imagine there must be some way to use this for a farm, but it’s also a fun prank you can pull on a friend. One time my cousin convinced me to do it and the vindicator started killing all my cows
Something I learned recently, and I plan to use this at some point: if a Johnny vindicator joins a pillager patrol, the pillagers also take on the 'Johnny' behaviour and attack everything the vindicator would
I remember the first time I saw a skeleton horse trap, I thought I was going insane! Thanks for the great footage!
Obscure mechanics week sounds really fun!
Finding a skeleton horse was actually one of my main goals for my world that I started in 1.18, and I finally got a trap to spawn in January! I also unfortunately had one of the horses die, but I love riding around my world on the backs of my skeleton horses. While not the best horses stat-wise, they certain have extra style points!
I noticed the creeper is named "The Blues Explosion" and I'm curious about what that might reference?
Also I didn't know lightning rods had a particle effect even when they aren't actively being struck, that's neat!
I'm assuming it's in reference to the band Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion
The amount of thought and consideration you put into the evolution of this series is impressive. You always consider what's important to know about any given subject before broaching it. I've played this game for a long, long time and I *know* I couldn't structure a series this well in that regard. Cheers mate and well done.
The skeleton horse in the intro brings back the memories of the first season when you encountered it after the thunderstorm 😄
The thumbnail for this video looks really cool! I didn't know the four skeleton horsemen came from a trap, I've never encountered them yet but I thought they just spawned, so good to know to be careful if I ever just see a single skeleton horse! (Also, if the thing with the creeper head later this week is banner patterns, looking forward to it!!)
I like how he just 'asked' the wondering trader for his leads :)
I've never thought of using the boat to get the leads, or did that only work after the Wandering Trader's demise?
@@jonrossillon8515 You don’t need to kill the Wandering Trader or the llamas to get the leads if you use a boat.
@@Dinki-Di Thank you!
You're using 'he' a lot on that mooshroom despite milking it, lol. I'm looking forward to obscure mechanics week - lots of vids out there on how to break the game, not so many on the fun Easter eggs.
To be fair, the thing does have visible horns
Then again, we don’t know anything about mob genders lmao
I have never seen any else do that four horsemen thing very exciting, thank you
Of all the things Pixlriffs covered, I didn't know you could put the WT llamas in a boat to get the leads humanely!
‘Mooshroom gets milked suspiciously’ is my favourite subtitle now hahaha
Since you mentioned the low health that skeleton horses have, and that you also healed the brown mooshroom cow, could you quickly address the healing of all mobs (alive, undead, neutral, hostile)?
Health potions work on everything except undead, who are healed by potions of harming. Regen potions will also heal everything, but nether regen or poison affect undead mobs.
Villagers get a short burst of regen whenever their profession is upgraded.
Tamed wolves can be fed any kind of meat, including rotten flesh, to heal them. Their current health is indicated by the angle of their tail.
Yeah and one more thing I think there are five heads:
Wither Skeleton Head
Dragon Head
Zombie Head
Skelton Head
Creeper Head
Dragon can be healed even by end crystals that a player places. But not glitches crystals. So much trolling potential 🤣
@@newbs1543 Do player's head drops when blown up by charged creeper?
@@ker0356 nope u need cheats and being online for that
Pixl! you are an absolute genius! thanks to your potion of healing idea for the mooshroom i now have an idea on how to heal my parrots! why didn't i ever think of doing that??? lol!
I liked the kinder/gentler way you got the leads from llamas. I did not know you could do it w/o killing them.
Best Minecraft teacher ever keep up the good work pix ✨
I never considered that you could use a lightning rod instead of a trident to convert stuff. That’s really good to know!
Fun fact about skeleton horses (at least on bedrock edition): You can ride them under water. If you get water breathing potions it makes it much better. Actually found a trap at the bottom of a massive ocean one time.
i was waiting for this episode. great work pix!
Be careful about using flame bows and swords with sweeping edge when trying to kill the skeleton riders and not the horse they are on. I accidentally killed all but one skeleton horse from a trap that way. An axe works well and I wish I would have thought to use that from the start.
2:33 wow is that like perfect timing to get a wandering trader at the time you need leads lol!!! Awesome content as always!!!
I really really love your survival guide videos. They are super informative! Thanks!!
That skeleton horse trap was amazing, I’ve been playing Dungeons and I always like when they show up. I didn’t realize however that they were in the main game(: always learning stuff around here
I laughed out loud when I saw the skeleton horse.
On Saturday I encountered my first one. I went for a closer look and just as I was thinking, "I'd better back off", the trap was sprung, and three skeleton riders (to quote Joel Duggan) "handed my butt to me" XD
I'm sure that those skeletons must be equipped with Power V bows on hard mode, my health flew down? I'm bad at PvE but I'd normally easily deal with 3 average skellies?!!
Yes, I'm having a good day, thank you so much for asking, hope you're having one too Pix😊🎮
Stick around he says. Pix, my memory is shocking at times, and even after playing for 4 years I still struggle with some basic redstone. I was grateful that you made vids that explained stuff in S1, but building as you release S2 vids is deffo helping me grasp this stuff.
I used the rods to convert my mooshrooms a while ago, but I didn't realise I could revert them the same way. so yas. learnt something. Go you. x
Great episode! I didn't know about striking the mooshroom with lightning to change its color.
On java 1.18, i just recently had a zombie siege spawn on my mushroom island, right where I had my villagers all setup. They weren't covered up or secured very well because I had checked the whole island to make sure the biome didn't change into something that could cause mobs to wander into the area. So shout out to everyone building on mushroom islands, zombie sieges can and will still happen there if you're not careful to avoid their required conditions, and you could suddenly find yourself missing a lot of villagers 🙏🏼
patched in 1.19
Last week all the pig farm of my son was turned into zombie pigmen and he also get some skeleton riding skeleton horses.
He become revolts with the pigs and happy with the new different horses for his base.
Amazing video! Speaking of getting mob heads, can you please do tutorial (s) on how to farm wither skeleton skulls? That would be helpful and interesting!
Turtle: “Am I a bowl to you?”
It was pretty funny how there was a thunderstorm outside my house while this video was playing. Made the first part with the skeleton horses pretty atmospheric
Fun fact: u can use a charged creeper on a wither skeleton to get a wither skull
I remember my very first skeleton horse. That was the craziest, most panicked i ever had been 🤣🤣🤣 i had no idea what was going on or how to stop it and whether i wanted to keep a horse as a hostage to see if it would happen again. I also didn't know if there was a thunderstorm that left before it even started. The good ol days lmao
I found out about the skeleton horse trap the hard way :) I knew the horses existed but thought they just sometimes spawned in thunderstorms with skeletons riding them. So I thought it was weird to see one alone but had no idea what I was in for when I approached it!
you mentioned in the video that brown mooshroom cows dont spawn naturally, but in one of my worlds, i found two brown mooshroom cows naturally spawned on the island. it had been the first time i visited the island. on that world i also found a brown panda, which is also rare. i have the screenshots of both still, and if i could include them in a comment, i would :]
You don’t need saddles in bedrock, you can ride the skelehorse without it.
this current episode is so meta, wow!
i am really sorry, but before i can watch this video, i have to rewatch a certain highlight clip on Pix Twitch-acc 😂😇
I don't know how but I have had the villager lightning advancement drop from zapping a villager with a lightning rod. That was on a Purpur server though although I would be surprised if Purpur was much different from Vanilla in that respect.
this is pretty cool
Questions!
Can a dispenser feed the brown mooshroom flowers and/or extract the stew?
Are skeleton horses harmed by sunlight?
I don't know about the first one (they can probably be fed) but skeleton horses luckily don't burn in sunlight
The other night I was growing oak trees for logs and I got 2 bee nests within a few minutes of each other! I wanted to start working with bees and thought I'd have to find a wild nest somewhere, apparently not! Sometimes game luck is on my side lol.
I have been playing on a bedrock realm for over a year. I have only ever seen ONE skeleton horse. It had spawned in my fenced-in beet garden. "Yea! Save it for later and spring it when the kids are online with me!'. No it despawned. Later I found out if you don't spring the trap within 15 minutes it will despawn.
"Not the healthiest things in the world"
Looking at a creature with nothing but a skeleton
Hopefully this week can include what happens when you bring a certain Nether mob to the overworld.
I think you should do a hardcore survival guide for the 1.19 update. I'm enjoying every series you've done on survival
Mob heads are useful on bedrock for pvp as well since you don't show up on locator maps to any players when wearing one. In my realm when me and my friend start slaughtering eachother I whip out a creeper head from my ender chest lol
When i saw charged creeper in your thumbnail i thought you got a trident and you will have it enchanted with channeling in this video , lets hope you will get a trident soon
Did not realise or rather have never noticed the lightning rod sparkled like that during a thunderstorm.
Recently I had 4 skeleton horses spawn right next to me. I figured 4 of them is even more rare so I nametagged them all
Topic idea - how to protect structures that contain villagers (iron farms, trading halls, breeders, etc.) from lightning strikes, both with and without the lighting rod.
1. Sleep every night.
This is good 👍
Cool. I think your storage needs a shulkerbox unloader :-)
cool vid Pix, why did the creeper jump out? and how can that be stopped? keep up the COOL vid!!!
He explains that at 12:08
In bedrock addition, Skeleton Horses don't need saddle to be tamed.
In Java they won't throw you when you mount them so kind of tame off but do need a saddle to be steered
Before putting up some lightning rods in my village, I lost two valuable librarians to a lightning strike and was quite astonished to find two witches in their house after a thunderstorm.
I ended up coming across skeleton horses in my current world and was able to rescue one, saddle it up and now it's chilling with my other horses, donkeys and mules. His name is Dr Eye (dry) because. Bones
Right in time.
I predict that a panda slime farm will be made this week
The Blues are Number 1
finally that sheep got attention, i know it was afraid that it was going to stay there for rest of its life
You should do an episode about zombie pigman vs pillager johnny vs iron golem.
The skeleton horse was cool I encountered them once 🥳 I indeed am lucky🤣
2:17 how to get lead from wondering trader without killing his llamas 😁
Put his llama(s) in boats, and the leads drop!
i keep forgetting about the horses until they show up outside my base and think someone pranked me with them haha
That was probably the most humane way anyone has ever harvested leads
Is the blues explosion a bellbottoms reference? 😂
in bedrock edition loading screen texts say that you dont need a saddle to tame a skeleton horse i am not sure if its actually riding it never checked it but its a nice thing show
Did we talk about milking a brown mooshroom with a bucket? I thought they gave chocolate milk???
Good video idea: do a video getting all 14 music discs and how to get them it’s fun
We'll definitely cover music discs this week!
@@Pixlriffs let’s go!!!
Quick Question:
Can you breed two brown mooshrooms together? If you can, will it be also brown or red?
You can breed brown mooshrooms, and their offspring then has a 1/1000 chance to be a red mooshroom. You can also cross-breed red and brown mooshrooms, at which point the chances even out.
You should do the rtx survival season 2. I missed it so much
Good u use the flowering azaleas leaves instead of the glass?
When are u going to fight the wither btw great videos
If particle-rendering is turned off you cannot see the potion effect on the mob you are targeting.
Hello Pixlriffs!!
In bedrock you don't need a saddle to ride a skeleton horse 😃
It's nice to be early like this, no likes, no views, no comments, just me and Pixlriffs
that is until about 5 seconds later
Today I learned that you can put a lead on a skeleton horse, when did that change ?
Random question, why do skeleton horses need a a saddle? In bedrock edition you can just jump on em and go. Oh also the conduit will harm the skeleton horses.
Passive mobs have natural regeneration
In bedrock edition you don't need saddles for the skelly horses
Hey Pix!
There's a zombie horse too in the game I suppose...
yes but you can't get it in survival normally
a wither skeleton head can be acquired by killing a stray with a charged creeper
That was a bug on Bedrock edition and has been patched
In bedrock you can ride skellie horses without a saddle
Fun fact: skeletal horses do not need a saddle to be controlled on Bedrock Edition!
i hope youre feeling well pix! you sound nasally in this, great video as always!
I always sound nasal, that's just my voice lol
@@Pixlriffs Inherited.
I got one of those damn horses and my friend killed it on accident videos on my sad excuse of a channel lol
Skeleton horses don´t require saddles to ride them.
They do on Java Edition.
On bedrock edition, you don't need saddle to ride skeleton horse
As the horses are now skeletons would a potion of healing damage them?
Hi Pixl, more great content. I've been playing minecraft for years but I'm still learning from your videos. If anyone is interested I've just started a new series of Minecraft longplays.
Wait. I can put saddles on the skeleton horses and take them home. I can't breed them because it's game mechanic. But I'm pretty sure I put all 3 of them with saddles in the stables with regular horses. Now I'm confused and I have to check it. 😅😅
