Since it's a frequently asked question: Yes, I could've brought Night Vision potions with me. But, in my opinion, Night Vision potions ruin the fun and the atmosphere of areas like this. It's called the 'Deep Dark' for a reason! The shadows are part of the environment, and lighting up the area without Sculk Shriekers hearing you is part of the challenge. Night vision also makes no difference to the Warden & Shriekers' Darkness status effect, so we'd be dealing with shadowy footage for half the video anyway. I've tried my best to brighten things up in the edit, to make sure it's more visible on UA-cam, but there's only so much I can do without making everything look deep fried. Hopefully it's still watchable - and if you want to see more of an Ancient City, it's worth looking for one yourself :)
Thanks pixl. I was only curious to know whether or not there was a specific reason they weren’t being used like maybe sensors could hear them being drank. Keep up the good work! Been watching you a few years now and you’re one of the most consistent and entertaining UA-camrs I’ve ever watched.
pix, don't try to fight the warden if u dont wanna die:) on hard mode a single attack from the warden will take down 80% of your health even when u have full prot 4 netherite armor:) even running away from him doesn't work because he'll unleash a sort of sonic wave attack and that attack's range is pretty large:)
On pocket edition, I need night vision to see down there. Pix, do you know where in the nether you can find fortresses the most? I ask because in my survival world, I have found FIVE bastions, but not one fortress
Plus it makes sense lore-wise; given there's no coal in the deepslate layers, the inhabitants of the city would've needed to import it from elsewhere and stockpile it.
Don’t know if this is a theory that’s already been posed but I have a theory regarding the warden and the creepers. The warden angers at sound and the creepers are the only completely silent mob. Is it possible that the creepers were originally some sort of failed experiment by the ancient builders to combat the warden.
@@ryko3698 the other option I have thought of is that the warden was a guardian for the people of the ancient city and the creepers a weapon used to attack them with out summoning it.
I think the biggest problem with that is that the Creepers target the player, a Builder, and nothing else. I think Ian Driver's idea that they were a weapon to attack the city is one idea. Another idea is that they're some kind of survivor of the dimension the Skulk came from, where it took over. Essentially, creepers being silent survived the Skulk takeover by just not making sound.
@@colinsmith1495 good thought. Hey are different to any other mob. The zombies and skeletons are undead maybe even cursed remnants of the old builder race where as the creepers do seem alien to the world and may did come through. Did that portal bring through the creepers and the warden dooming the ancient builder civilisation? Great addition to the game. Love the lore possibilities.
About the center of the city, there is actually 3 types of center and each one you enter in a different way, one has a chest with a golden apple that you need to eat on top of a chiseled deepslate that is on the side of the chest, the one you got is a clear area that has one chiseled deepslate somewhere in the floor and you need to make a noise on top of It, the third one has a small corridor with walls with a chiseled deepslate in the middle, that when you walk over it opens the door
33:18 you could've placed and broke a wool block, sculk sensors can't detect you breaking the wool but they can detect the item dropping which doesn't count as player activity This will activate the sculk sensor but it wouldn't snitch to the shrieker, and during the brief cooldown you can quickly break both the shriekers Risky but effective
I was thinking that same thing! That way, you can alert the sensors but they won't activate shrieker, and you have enough time to break the shrieker and the sensors won't alert the warden about that, because they've already been activated!
The episode (and the previous) is awesome btw! I was pretty scared of the deep dark and the ancient cities since I'm not a fan of the mob-fighting aspect of the game. But now that I have a better understanding of how it works and how to avoid the warden, I feel less anxious about it :)
just letting you know, Great work on the brightness of the video. everything was clear for me considering the atmosphere and the darkness effect. so thanks for that
Your Attenborough segment was so majestic. Much like the Warden as it sniffs out intruders. Unrelenting in its aural engagement, the Warden derps toward anything that sounds like a reminder of the ancient Steve; an interesting blocky inhabitant of this spectacular Warden's home environment; simply trying to find its long lost friend to ask him where he left the TV remote!
While following the snapshots and the news, i was very terrified to play the update. I thought to totally ignore the deep dark and ancient city. But seeing you play with wits and the way it's intended, i feel after all it's not that difficult. In fact, the loot and resources proposed feels worth enough to visit a city early game. Thank you so much pix!
I felt the opposite 😅 Seeing a Minecrafter of his caliber have so many run-ins with the Warden and some terrifying near misses capped off with a flying-blind frantic escape made me even more hesitant to re-enable warden spawning in my world
@@qacarxan3647 I don't have any particular fear regarding to any aspect of deep dark. I just assumed that going in deep dark will get me killed at any cost. I think it’s important for people to know that since ancient cities are so big, parts of them may stretch out to a cave biome that isn’t the deep dark, and mobs end up spawning. This seems to happen more frequently on Bedrock Edition
Pix, your excitement and positivity about the update features is contagious- I haven’t seen a comments section so favorable to the Ancient City adventure as this one is! Thank you!!!✨
I think we have a great loot from the ancient cities. I haven't found the Otherside disc before, so I was very happy finding two in there. Swift sneak is also very cool. Too bad I didn't find enough echo shards for a compass, but maybe I didn't look hard enough. Anyways, great video! Have a good weekend
Plus the factor that the Warden (for the most part) seems like a pointless mob to fight in the long run, so the most useful thing is therefore, being stealthy!
I'm so happy they made useful loot for here. I searched through an ancient city yesterday and came out with 8 notch apples; 4 were in one chest (that has to be some sort of record)! Also got enough shards for a compass, two new music disks, swift sneak books, otherside disk, 7 fully enchanted diamond hoes, and prot 4 leggings.
Fun fact, once the warden roars, it will constantly track you unless you get a reasonably large distance away. In the first snapshots you could just piller up and be fine, but in the official update they actually gave it a ranged attack! Needless to say, being on a pillar won't protect you once the warden roars. In that situation you have to either run or fight
I've been looting a lot of ancient cities in creative mode to see what the loot is like. In one ancient city I found 6 enchanted golden apples and 6 Otherside discs, and in another one I found 4 enchanted golden apples and 7 Otherside discs. This was on top of tons of disc fragments, echo shards,, leggings, hoes, swift sneak books, etc. Definitely worth taking the risk
Here to say the same, except that in Italy we use the same thing, "a mano a mano", in the sense of little by little... nice to know that it is used also in english!
The whole suspense and design of these cities is great. Playing with the in game music running the track Ancestry plays when in them and really adds to it. Super spooky vibes and fun stealthing around.
I've been avoiding the snapshots, so had no idea about the echo shards, disk and compass, that's so cool! I'm really excited to explore this now, what a huge change to exploring this update has given
I love the way you switched to your golden carrot to break the skelly skull, made me chuckle 😁 One does wonder tho, who lights the candles in the Ancient cities... Does the warden come out when there's no-one around with a wax taper, lighting all the candles? 😂

Pixlriffs Attenborough That was a great documentary. It was very entertaining watching you interact with the deep-dark and the Warden. I look forward to every post! Your fear in this and the last episode was palpable :-)
If you Pillar up, you can place Deep Snow at the base of the Pillar and Freeze the Warden when it comes near. You also may be able to drop Anvils down on its head. Be sure to be at least 20 blocks away from the Warden and remember, it may be able to climb on blocks to get near you, so Pillar up some more if you need to.
This was really refreshing and interesting to watch! I feel like all of the warden content I've seen is people trying to kill it, this type of game play looks a lot more fun imo
hey pix just to let you know in the new bedrock preview (beta) you can duplicate allays by playing a jukebox and giving it an amethyst shard!!! (this will likely get implemented to java as well later :D)
@TechNoah3346 its neither, it's an intended thing When you play a jukebox, it does a dance If you give (I don't know if that means you are feeding it the shard) it an amethyst shard during the dance it will make heart particles and another allay will be formed There's a 2 minute cooldown however
Now I want a series of you doing a nature documentary on minecraft mobs. Your voice is soothing and calm enough as it, it would be perfect and hilarious!
My strategy to get away from the warden after it's summoned is to immediately throw an ender pearl as far away as possible. The only issue I've ran into with that is ender pearling into lava, but despite that ender pearls work extremely well to get far away fast
The blue and light blue wool is actually a specific generated structure called the "icebox" which is supposed to be like where some one was like exploring and that was there camp, and the chest inside always has food
The diagonal connectivity is a good thing to know about. This was super fun. I haven't found a city yet, but the loot looks really decent. I know a lot of people were complaining at the beginning about what would be included, but I think it's a good mix.
I love how you explain the mechanics as you go along. Thanks for your consistent hard work. The effort you put in is incredible and doesn't go unnoticed.
This is a brilliant example of great fun content. I got to learn much about the Ancient City and your approach lead to a fun and dramatic experience. I look forward to more of your adventures in the Deep Dark!
under the 'wool storage area' there is a room with food and ice edit : the warden can also attack you from long range if it notices you but cant melee attack you, it also ignores armor and enchantments, this is from the minecraft wiki directly, ...a warden still spawns on the third activation, even though any particular shrieker had been activated once. If a player does not activate any sculk shrieker, the warning level decreases by 1 every 10 minutes. btw love ur videos keep it up
Thanks for showing us the "Deep Dark", and ancient cities, as well as strategies for dealing with the wardens. Alos, I greatly appreciate you showing the accessibility setting for the darkness pulse. I'm already severely legally blind, and can well do without that darkness. LOL
I absolutely love the lore that is being hinted by the ancient cities! I want to try to figure out the story these are trying to tell us. The redstone lab could suggest a society that developed a lot of the redstone components the player uses for their contraptions.
I 100% agree with you about the Warden being a stealth challenge not a boss battle, but I do think it could be cool to have the Warden be a part of the portal later on. Something like having to lead the Warden through the portal to activate it! And then maybe being in a different dimension kills the Warden and you get a Warden head or something. And THAT allows you to customize what the skulk sensors do and don't detect. Just some dumb ideas!
There are multiple different kinds of city centers, only one has the eating. Each one has a different puzzle, this one was you're supposed to walk over the chiseled deepslate on top.
That was so tense and exciting, the deep dark is so interesting! Also, cool that you finally got Otherside! I was kind of expecting you to play it in a jukebox to transition into the outro music lol!
About the night vision potions, personally I think it's better without it. When I went in the first time, I went with the potions and because I could see everything so clearly, it didn't feel like survival I'm a way. It felt like I was exploring in a snapshot. It's worth it to do it naturally or if you're lucky enough, use the OptiFine setting for ambient lighting. This episode was so fun and that last encounter had me almost biting my nails!!
Ender pearls are a must-have, you can just teleport across the city (to your exit point, if you teleport more than 45 blocks and another shrieker detects you, you're screwed). They have saved me so many times
wow Nice video Pix love how you pillared up to get away! cool idea and will keep it in mind for my dark raid! and cant wait for the fight against the warden... thx for all your effort it is much appreciated!
I agree with the lighting going black, it adds to yhe experience. Congrats on making it out alive on your first run, i wasn't as lucky i tripped 4 sensor almost immediately, upon entry.
It's only happened to me once before, in a Minecraft Bingo run (on Minecraft 1.16.5) where I raided a dungeon and found two enchanted apples in a loot chest. Probably the most improbable thing that's ever happened to me in this game.
the warden and the deep dark are, hands down, THE scariest thing to have ever been added to minecraft. i've so far only watched VIDEOS of the warden and yet i've been on the edge of my seat, even getting startled! the only way to top this in terms of fear factor would be to turn the game into a straight up horror game-- except they just did with this update lol.
sculk shriekers only activate if the vibrations made are a result of a player action. This inculdes placing a block, breaking a block, elytra flight, walking, sprinting, jumping, etc.
Remember your old project on restoring a Bastion? Maybe you could try restoring one of these Ancient Cities! Note: If you want to keep the shriekers, break and replace them. Player placed shriekers don't spawn Wardens.
If you need to hide because the Warden has risen, go up to the top of those towers around the city. Most of them are too high for his ranged attack to reach you. (about 15 blocks)
Love the videos and the effort put into them. Might I request a nightvision potion farm for caving? Watching on mobile in the sun is a real pain with the dark parts of caves. I could push up the brightness to the max but that drains battery a lot and even heats up the phone in the sun. Cheers
Fixing up an Ancient City would be a good challenge, but also fun to see a fully rebuilt city complete with proper buildings, and maybe even some villagers. I kind of wonder now... What if there is a different villager type for ancient cities or does it just use the traditional defaults of the surface? That would be fun.
I feel like the redstone labs in the Ancient Cities and other features like that are because Mojang have heard of and watched blind let's plays like PiroPito's, where he manages to discover a lot through trial and error but some features are hard to discover in-game. For instance, PiroPito took ages to figure out how to build a Nether portal, and then in in the Nether update there were the overworld portals added showing the shape to players.
The lore of this place fascinates me... It looks like the ancient builders Discovered this place And were attempting To explore it I think anywhere that has wood Construction Is an example of ancient builder excavation. anything from the overworld...like wool carpet and wood. This place predates the surface temples the strongholds pig bastions even nether fortresses by a big jump.
1:32 personally I don't really do stealth. In BOTW I just sorta massacred the whole Yiga Clan Hideout because I got tired of doing the stealth sections. In that game the sword enemies specifically in that one location will one shot you, that enemy can also teleport and has 600 HP. I literally fought hoards of those enemies at once just so I wouldn't have to do the stealth section.
i don't know why people have been complaining about this update... the dark city + warden is just amazing! It's the kind of content minecraft needs, not just useless aggressive mobs, but an interesting challenge and some lore
9:53 I'm pretty sure they now always spawn in those ruins at those exact same places. The other place they also spawn is the middle pillars of the ancient cities.
Trapping the Warden in a lava pool is honestly a really funny way of just disabling its pursuit, it just has to sit there basically in timeout cuz it can't burn or do anything until it despawns.
About sculk shriekers, they only actually activate if there is player activity nearby, not from mobs. A sculk shrieker will activate if a PLAYER relays a signal from a sculk sensor to a shrieker, but if a bat flaps around a sculk sensor that's very close to a shrieker, nothing will happen. You can actually use this info to your advantage and disarm a bunch of shriekers haphazardly surrounded by multiple sensors by placing a block of wool and destroying it, since breaking blocks does not inherently count as a player action and will distract nearby sensors without setting off the shriekers. During the cooldown, you can easily despatch of the shriekers with little concern.
I like the idea that ancient scientists allowed the Skulk / Warden to enter our world through their experiments (the redstone lab) similar to Stranger Things and it led to the destruction of their civilization.
Man, I've seen the warden in its development, and never have I thought that I'm going to say this but I didn't expect that it would make Minecraft survival into a horror movie😅😨

under the 'wool storage area' there is a room with food and ice
edit : the warden can also attack you from long range if it notices you but cant melee attack you, it also ignores armor and enchantments,
this is from the minecraft wiki directly,
...a warden still spawns on the third activation, even though any particular shrieker had been activated once.
LOL
Avoiding the warden looks way more fun. Like playinf hide and seek, stealth mission.
The darkness effect slider is just the pulsing effect. You cant change anything about the darkness effect itself, just the pulsing
this man is the one of most careful youtubers when entering ancient cities most youtubers go in there guns blazing and end up dying a bunch of times
That was so tense and exciting, the deep dark is so interesting! Also, cool that you finally got Otherside! I was kind of expecting you to play it in a jukebox to transition into the outro music lol!
That was a fun episode, I think it is the way mojang wanted to experience the deep dark. Thx Pix.
love the david attenborough voice =]
About the night vision potions, personally I think it's better without it. When I went in the first time, I went with the potions and because I could see everything so clearly, it didn't feel like survival I'm a way. It felt like I was exploring in a snapshot. It's worth it to do it naturally or if you're lucky enough, use the OptiFine setting for ambient lighting. This episode was so fun and that last encounter had me almost biting my nails!!
this was one of the best episodes ever! wow!!
the lighting in the video was perfect btw!
Dood I am so staying tuned, can’t wait for your next video
Loved the video as always ♥ Cant wait to see more Deep Dark Adventures!
Don't think I've ever seen 2 enchanted golden apples in one chest before. Mental loot!
Mobs spawn them too. Any noise for that matter does
20:39 "outer limit of this part of the end city" hahaha really enjoy catching the rare occasions that pix makes a mistake
"just pillar up. Ohhh goodness go away!! "My reaction everytime you trigger the shrieker. Huh, I'm still terrified.
a nature documentary spin-off of the life in minecraft would be awesome.
Pixl Attenborough!
Remember your old project on restoring a Bastion?
Maybe you could try restoring one of these Ancient Cities!
Note: If you want to keep the shriekers, break and replace them. Player placed shriekers don't spawn Wardens.
That darkness effect is super scary, that's a big nope from me. But Pix loved a every moment 😆 reminded me of bastion heists in the 1.16 😉 Brilliant 👏
Pixlriff, how long were you holding your breath for when you summoned the Warden?
Shriekers respawn over a long period of time. A shrieker right next to my entrypoint reappeared after an extended absence of mine from the city.
I think Nature-Documentary-Pixlriffs is my new favorite thing
Finally pix gave us the narration we’ve always wanted
Fantastic video, I was on the edge of my seat! And well done with the lighting, it looked perfect on my screen.
I feel like the redstone labs in the Ancient Cities and other features like that are because Mojang have heard of and watched blind let's plays like PiroPito's, where he manages to discover a lot through trial and error but some features are hard to discover in-game. For instance, PiroPito took ages to figure out how to build a Nether portal, and then in in the Nether update there were the overworld portals added showing the shape to players.
the warden is a beast. I don’t know how you were able to keep your cool! Amazing video.
It was like watching a horror film lol. I don't know if I'll be brave enough to explore the deep dark yet, I'm still scared of caves haha!
Every time I see stuff about the warden I get so terrified. The warden is such a terrifying mob
Love your David Attenborough impression 😂👍🏻👌🏻
i don't know why people have been complaining about this update... the dark city + warden is just amazing! It's the kind of content minecraft needs, not just useless aggressive mobs, but an interesting challenge and some lore
9:53 I'm pretty sure they now always spawn in those ruins at those exact same places. The other place they also spawn is the middle pillars of the ancient cities.
30:06 warden in lava whatever will he do
Trapping the Warden in a lava pool is honestly a really funny way of just disabling its pursuit, it just has to sit there basically in timeout cuz it can't burn or do anything until it despawns.
I was hesitant about visiting an ancient city but watching this video, I think I’m ready lol
I’d love to see what you could do if you decide to clear out an ancient city. The lack of mobs could allow for really interesting builds
Hey Pix!
Does the sculk catalyst emit some ligh? Because I can see that they are even visible from far away. Kind of glowing...
They do seem to emit light, yes. I haven't spent much time studying them in detail.
@@Pixlriffs Hmm
Thanks for the info by the Way...
Pixl: Redstone is fascinating!
Me who knows nothing about it: What is redstone again?
I like the idea that ancient scientists allowed the Skulk / Warden to enter our world through their experiments (the redstone lab) similar to Stranger Things and it led to the destruction of their civilization.
Not even 15 seconds in and Pix already has devised lore for the skulk. 👍
If you want lore, look no further than Wifies and Game Theorists, their lore vids are so in depth
@@caveboy5677 I have seen them
I was just pointing out.
@@rudrodeepchatterjee nice
I think it would be interesting if you used different colours of wool for each visit to track your journey each visit
Man, I've seen the warden in its development, and never have I thought that I'm going to say this but I didn't expect that it would make Minecraft survival into a horror movie😅😨
You could wool the sensors or shriekers, also bring scissors for faster wool collecton.
