my profession is interpreter and yes interpretation from translation is different, you really cant relay every single word from one party to another during an actual live conversation, and like Mila said, yes, its an interpretation not a translation, people tend to go off topic several times during a single sentence and its nearly impossible to relay that without confusing the other party, since they are confused themselves to gather a clean thought for us to relay for them LOL. But yeah some experienced interpreters obviously do a better job than the newer ones.
To clarify her point… the spoken word is interpreted while translation specifically refers to the written word. And the interpreter performs a kind of artful expression in the other language. YW

as a multilingual living in a multilingual society, translations are okay most times but jokes and local references don't translate well at all, even when speaking the same language because then you'd have to know the local dialect of that langauge.
two former Poland regions speak ukranian in Ukraine (which is simply Polish dialect of russian). the others speak russian because they are in no relation to Poland. as well as the whole Ukraine itself because it's actually former Russia. just another russian region among many many others.

This happens all the time to me. I get lots free food from mortified restaurant managers. I speak 6 languages so it's not from any specific group of people. People in general, just do horrible things when they think they can get away with it.

I speak Russian, but English is my primary language. I understand more Russian than I speak though (I know the words, but since I am not a native speaker it takes time to dredge up less used ones). Some kids on the bus were talking absolute smack about one of the other kids in Russian, while being nice and cheerful in English with that kid. When the Russian speaking kids got off the bus I explained to them, in Russian, that that kind of behavior is not tolerated on the bus. The look on their face was absolutely priceless.
Mila Kunis family nationality is Ukraine. I expect her to know Russian because her last name is Kunis. (Language doesn't always work that way.) Not being bilingual, from a multinational family, is more of the surprise and disappointment.

I can imagine how frustrating it would be during a press conference or an interview to have questions (and answers) translated incorrectly.

The translation comment is spot on. I've done the job (spanish) and very few people do it right. Translators on boxing matches and live events often make mistakes or oversimplify due to not being fast enough, but what really pisses me off is bad translations in movies. They have the time, it's just laziness. To be fair, puns, idioms, or metaphors are hard to translate.
