  • A Colorado school district has decided not to hand out Gideon Bibles to students anymore. This decision comes after they were forced to also hand out atheist and Satanic material. Cenk Uygur, Ana Kasparian, Jimmy Dore, Jaime Camil, hosts of The Young Turks discuss.
Should public schools be handing out religious material? Let us know in the comments below.

“A Colorado school district that allowed Gideon Bibles to be distributed to students wants to remove religion from its schools after it was forced to also make atheist and Satanic literature available.
The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) explained earlier this month that it had asked the Delta County School District to begin handing out “freethought materials” after the district refused to stop distributing Bibles to students.
“The School District is not required to maintain this open forum and is free to close it rather than allow FFRF to distribute materials,” FFRF attorney Andrew Seidel wrote in a March 3 letter to the Delta County School District. “We do not think schools should be a battleground for religious ideas. But when schools allow the Gideons to prey on children, their message of eternal damnation for any who don’t believe in their God must be countered.”

nickbenkster Thats a common misconception cooked up by ignorant fools. People have killed in the name of Satan (for a number of reasons) or have used Satan as an excuse for them murdering people. Real human sacrifices are incredibly rare and not limited to satanics. Animal sacrifice is more common though it means nothing as that is quite common in many religions including Christianity.

andrew j wolf Like Christianity, satanism has its orthodox factions and a number of spin-offs and interpretations. Although most would consist of being aggressively atheistic, using Satan's origin as an opposer to show resentment towards mainstream religion. Many dont even consider Satan a deity at all, just a symbol of something that rebelled against the normality of society. So basically the majority of satanics are anarchistic atheists.

Jimmy is COMPLETELY wrong when he claims that America is supposedly the only country with second language learners in public schools. I can't judge for other continents but here in Europe, we have TONS of second language learners in our public schools. In my country, we have up to EIGHTY percent foreigners in some schools in urban areas. These foreigners come from many different places: other western European countries, the middle east, Russia, east Asia, Africa etc.
U.S. public schools do suck and the reason for that is because right wingers in the US government make it impossible for education to get enough money. If America banned private schools and invested as much money in public education as it currently invests in fighting wars all over the world, it could easily have an education system like in Finland.

    • @tiborpejic2341
      @tiborpejic2341 8 років тому +3

I agree. The problem of American school aren't second language learners. In fact, according to the last PISA scores (from 2012) reading is the strongest suit of American students. And that line "... when you control for poverty..." makes no sense because US is richer than any of the other countries whose students outperform th US students. However, I do not think that the only problem of American schools is the lack of money but also the poor investment of that money. Money should be invested into students and teachers not stadiums, computers, new buildings etc. All those things are fine but people are more important. Japanese spent less on public education but they pay teachers more and their students achieve some of the best results in the world.

+Atl .W No, I'm not from the UK, I'm from Switzerland. I said "foreigners" because almost all people in Switzerland who are not white are foreigners. We have a very strict immigration policy (probably the strictest in all of Europe), so most foreigners either don't pass it or don't want to go through the hassle and thus don't get a citizenship. Contrary to America, second-generation immigrants don't get a Swiss passport even if they're born within Switzerland. So most second-generation immigrants are also foreigners. So when you see a person with a Swiss passport, chances are that this person has had his/her citizenship for several generations. Since we've never had slavery and no immigration from Africa/Caribbean/Asia etc. (we didn't have any colonies) we were a very mono-ethnic country until very recently. I'm in my 20s now and when I was a child, I never saw a black/Asian person. I think I saw the first black person in my life when I was 18 or 19. So in my country, "second-language speaker" usually means "foreigner" (except from bilingual kids which have also been very rare until very recently). However, I understand that this is different in other countries and I didn't mean to create a "us vs. them". I'm very tolerant about foreigners or other cultures/ethnicities.
Sorry, I don't know what "urban areas" is code for. I guess it's an American thing? We don't have any other ethnicities in the countryside. The countryside is still very white in Switzerland... .
I don't think foreigners should feel ashamed just because they're foreigners. Maybe the word also has an undeservedly bad connotation. I've lived abroad for abroad in two different countries for 2.5 years, so I was a foreigner there too. My girlfriend is also a foreigner.
We have the problem with the segregation mostly with foreigners from the Balkan region. During the 1990s, we had a huge immigration of people from Albania, Yugoslavia, Serbia, Croatia, Macedonia and so on. These people (along with the Turks who came a little earlier) all formed parallel societies and it can be somewhat annoying. There are people who've been living here for 30 years and still don't speak the local language decently.
And yes, I am very well aware of the fact that English natives are not willing to learn a language when they move to another country. This is also true for Germans, French and most other "big-country-people". Swiss people are a big exception here. In Switzerland we have four official languages and the vast majority of Swiss people is trilingual (or bilingual at the very least). This is true of Professors just as much as cashier ladies at the local grocery store. We're a small country, so we're just so used to communicating in many other languages and we like to accommodate to other people's linguistic needs. For example when a French tourist asks me for the way, I would immediately switch to French for him. So when I lived in these two other countries, I naturally also tried to learn the other languages. However, you are correct that most other nationalities don't do that.

+Juke Tolson this is not how our country works, when it comes to religion it's all or nothing. You either don't teach any religion in class and only focus on proven scientific facts like every other modern country or you allow all religion including satanism, Islam, etc. You can't say "I want this not this one, why? Because I say so." but honestly this discussion is pointless as separation of church and state says government institutions cannot favor one religion over another meaning our government and public schools are securlary run, no Christianity, no satanism, just scientific facts that are backed up by evidence.

"Defunding" something is the first move in the privatization playbook. Defund it so that it doesn't work anymore, then people want something done, then it's privatized, and fails in about 7 years. That's why public education has been defunded. The US Postal Service was forced by a Republican law to fund it's pension to anticipate every worker 75 years in advance. 75 years. Funding a pension for workers who weren't even born yet. Reason? The pension fund was the pot of gold at the end of the privatization rainbow - it would be gutted as soon as the institution was sold. Fortunately, the workers and management have so far averted privatization.

County based systems statistically save tax payers money as apposed to dozens of schools in an individual county or city, having great duplication of resources and staff. Having county taxes fully reflective on income makes the tax burden more fair to all instead of fully putting burden on home/property owners especially seniors. There are many papers and resources published on this topic,

I too am a huge supporter of public schools. I went to a private school up until 5th or 6th grade. when I got to my middle school I was so un prepared for the level that my classmates were at at that point. I remember feeling behind and like I hadn't learned what they had. there were more programs at the school such as music and so many more extracurricular activities. we had an incredible number of resources which I hadn't experienced before. I should also say that it was a Jewish private school and because of it we also had to learn Hebrew, none of which I remember, and had prayer services. I don't remember having Torah study classes but I must have had them. and this probably contributed to my feeling behind. now I'm in my last year of high school and the cycle which Cenk is talking about is very clear. a huge percentage of people in my school district are Jewish and send their children to private school, and because of the overwhelming majority they run the school board. either we are all incredibly cynical or the lack of care is extremely evident. whether it's the lack of paper in our building, the elementary schools being shutdown and sold/rented to yeshivas, and new teachers being fired before they reach tenure while the ones that do have it haven't received a new contract in 5 years you see it. it's gotten so bad that now we have elementary school and middle school aged kids in the same building. that's a range of 8 years. the fact is people are already paying so much to make sure that boys and girls don't mingle that they don't want to pay anymore in taxes. our school needs more money or else I'm afraid I won't have a place to go to for my 20 year reunion. and it's mind boggling to me that our district is suffering while the one right next door is thriving with beautiful equipment for theater with professional looking sets while we can barely afford the paper we print it on. that all.

she is so right I work in a public charter school and I have a little sister who goes to a religious private school she 5 years old. The 5 year olds I work with are a whole lot more advanced when it comes to their math then she is, only in this case I blame her teacher. The teacher does not teach the material she tells the parents do not worry about math I will handle it and then she sends them home with over 30 lessons of math, 2 stories, a language arts packet, 20 stories and quizzes a week. The children have never done before and then when you bring it up to her she says she never gets complaints, the last quarter the year she called a meeting because she got so many complaints that the principal threatened to remove her. Where I work the teachers make sure there children know there information if the child has not mastered that information you do not move them. you do not tell them on a standardized placement test to just guess the answers because they have not taught it. You don't do that, it amazes me that woman ever managed to get a job in teaching.

It's a combination of two things:
      1. They're very simple thinkers who can't put complex ideas together, such as holding multiple opinions about a particular topic (like how TYT sometimes praises Obama and sometimes criticizes him, depending on the issue at hand).
      2. They desperately want to be right, and when they see TYT criticizing mainstream news for being unfair and unbalanced, their simple thinking comes to the first and overly simplistic conclusion that TYT must be hypocrites because TYT also expresses opinions.

I went to public school and it was MISERABLE.
We were treated like prisoners, guilty until proven innocent and there was no way to prove yourself innocent. I was on the honor roll since first grade, never got below a B average, took advanced placement (college level) classes and graduated with an advanced diploma and they treated me just as terrible as the kids who talked back, did drugs and skipped class.
They'd call you to the office randomly and make you pee in a cup, and they'd go through your locker, dig through your backpack without warning or permission and have cops patrolling the school regularly. You could be suspended or expelled if you had things like pocketknife, tobacco, or even a matchbook.
I once was pulled out of class and had to go prove my thermos of coffee was in fact coffee, and I was also sent to the office and marked tardy even though my dad came to school with me and proved it was his fault I was late because his car broke down.
(If you were marked as tardy even once, then during the last week before summer, all the other students get to leave school early at like 12pm and you have to stay and do punishment work for three hours all week. That's 15 hours of punishment for being even 5 minutes late due to circumstances totally beyond your control.)
I'd literally cut off one of my fingers before sending my poor child to that hellhole.

i'm tired of the bashing of charter schools from the left - and i'm to the left of Bernie and most of TYT. I went to a charter school for junior high and high school. Every single person in my graduating class either went to college, served in the military first, or took a gap year before starting college. Only one student stated when graduating they weren't going to go to college. My high school had the best scores in the area and some of the best (if not the best) statewide. This with less funding than public schools. Am I against privatization of schools in terms of a profit motive and to avoid fixing public schools? Yes. However, it seems like a lot of progressives aren't educated on charter schools so it pisses me off to no end seeing people bash on them. 1. charter schools receive less funding than public schools and are smaller so that can lead to worse off results. 2. charter schools are still public. They don't charge tuition and anyone can go to one. 3. It seems like the same people who bash our current education system, are the same ones that bash charter schools when they deliver more individualized results. My school situation was unique because I live in Hawaii and the DOE is all operated by the state rather than by the counties. Charter Schools have a general budget for the entire state rather than an amount per pupil. That means if a charter school opens up, the existing schools lose funding. Yet despite my school losing money due to another one popping up, I still received a better education than if I were to have gone to a regular public school.

It's abundantly clear that you've never been to silicon valley, or any of the high tech firms that make the USA the powerhouse it is. Having been on the inside, it's rare to be in a room with even 50% born Americans. Immigrants don't just dominate the jobs that Americans won't do, they also dominate the jobs Americans can't do, and it's because American students are taught to fear and avoid math and science. That's the only reason.

+EvilShredder Indeed. Capital doesn't care about intelligence except when it cares about intelligence. It isn't a given. Scooping up talent to leave the rest to fend for themselves should be an expected behavior of capitalists (though many other systems as well, at the very least as long as we keep capitalism or capitalistic-ish systems happening). AKA that's life.

Education is largely the result of the student's efforts more so than anything else. Sure, some schools will push students harder or have better resources or learning environment, but what education comes down to no matter where you are going to school: do you read or not, and what are you reading? do you practice the skills or do you not? I am all for creating better schools, but what we really need is better parents helping their kids become better students. It will never happen in the US -- too many people just don't care. That's why we suck. Here is one example: closed minded people more interested in their own small-world dogma than in learning about the world.

True enough. The education system isn't really to blame, it's a symptom of a larger problem. US society, at a macro level, doesn't value even basic intellectual pursuits. Many US Americans look at knowledge acquisition as ultimately pointless, or worse, a recipe for moral bankruptcy.
On the plus side, it's pretty easy to be "smarter" than just about everyone else here, there's very little competition. If you could spell autodidact before reading this sentence you're in the upper 2%. If you didn't know what it meant before reading this paragraph but do now -- you're in the top 1%.

jessesipprell We could probably argue that the story of Adam and Eve sets up christian literal-bible-reading culture to abhor knowledge (eating from the tree of knowledge is the original sin, after all). PS -- I would hesitate to judge someone as "smart" or "dumb" based solely on knowledge of specific vocabulary words, which suggests a certain elitism or absolute definition of what is and what is not "being smart."

when i lived in peru for 2 years i noticed this was a big issue. school used to be free for everyone, it eventually started getting privaticed, etc etc. now everyone. Everyone. goes to a private school. if youre too poor to pay, then you go to a "public school" which is just a rat cage with 1 teacher per 100 students and noone really learns anything. i wouldnt like to see america on the same boat.

I live in Louisiana, and passing out Bibles is the least of it. Not a single rally or event I attended in almost ANY public school here started (and sometimes ended) with a prayer. Flyers from the local churches were passed out seasonally to invite everyone to the churches' various celebrations. Often there are scriptures in various teachers' offices, if not in the actual halls. It's crazy. Not as bad in the north half of the state, these days, but it's still rampant in the south.

  • @samueld.3347

I am Christian but I am also more so a monotheist now. I agree with this video on the basis as others have said that not having separation of church and state is unamerican. A school should not have the power to indoctrinate anyone on anything. With that said, the school should have allowed the church to pass out the Bibles as they could be taken or refused by the students voluntarily. As long as the Bibles weren't being passed out directly on school property the school's move hurt our civil liberties IMHO (I don't know personally where they were passing them out).
That said, I do believe schools should have a classes on religion in high school where kids are taught about the current and past religions as a separate division of history studies. I believe our lack of education in this regard teaches children to have stigma and create a biased view that's harmful both to our politics and the economy.

Every time I hear Ana talk, I love her more and more. My wife and I both went to public schools and it was fantastic as well! IMO, one of the biggest factors in education nowadays is the support of parents. The amount of adults (with children) who say they "can't help" their kids w/schoolwork in GRADE SCHOOL because they "don't understand it" is appalling. Nowadays, parents expect that if they spend more money on a school, or move to an area w/better schools, everything will just work out and they won't have to do anything.

as an agnostic i can say this situation is hilarious but the whole "schools can have no religion" is a bit of a stretch.
should we teach religion in school? unless its from a historical or literary viewpoint no we should not(for instance discussing the founding of Christianity through verses of the old testament is cool. same for reading parables or psalms in literature class).
just treat as what it is-An unbiased learning material.
and its okay to have a religious freedom ideal, just make it for all.
my school at the start of every day has a moment of silence where anyone can pray no matter what their religion and nobody talk and all the atheist in my class bitch about it wasting valuable time(a whopping 45 seconds).
to me, if they want me to respect they have no belief then they need to respect that others do

If people want to pray, they can pray during recess or at home before or after school, or at any other point during the day on their own damn time. Just because someone believes in something doesn't mean you auto-default respect to them. If schools want to teach a lesson about group think, and isolation of the other; perhaps they should start handing out arm bands to those who don't pray, I'm sure that'll go over well.

Religion is supposes to bring people together and progress the world, not seperate us....
How is it hurting you for someone to pray?
How would you like it if you were told you coudlnt do something because it was different?
I dont understand why this has to be such a big fuss.
Let people believe what they want as long as it isnt hurting anyone else.
And yeah you should respect that people have beliefs, the same way you want them to resepect that you dont.
Your preaching on how "religion is isolatinistic" while condemning those who are religious, the majority of the world. How hypocritical is that

    • @rahn45
      @rahn45 8 років тому +1

Nathan Tucker How can you with a straight face say religion is supposed to bring people together and progress the world when it's one of the leading causes of death, and oppression in both the historical context and in the modern context.
There's a lot of people out there who believe that vaccines causes autism, so they don't vaccinate their kids and their ignorance results in sick and dead children. There's a lot of people who believe that every sperm is sacred, so do not use any sort of contraceptive; and we got to see the spread of AIDs throughout the world on a massive scale. We have people who believe that you can treat diseases with nothing but water, and again we see children and desperate people suffer the consequences.
I do not, and will not respect those beliefs, and you're a damn fool for giving them that respect.

These people that think their particular belief is the ultimate, irrefutable truth of the universe sure do fear having it scrutinized with reason, skeptical inquiry and alternative information. People need to shed themselves of these ridiculous, divisive and intolerant Bronze Age systems and get on with living with their fellow human beings and try to make the world a better place and not deluding yourselves in thinking that you have a special place in a special club with special rewards coming to you and everyone else be damned.

Don't pay for private unless it's middle or high school. Public schools teach enough of the basics of reading, writing and arithmetic, that it's just a wast of money otherwise. I went to public schools, except for an independent private college-prep high school, then to my state University, which cost about the same when housing costs were added!. The high school was about $5k a year and very high end for the '90s.
All the kids that would have been bullied in public schools went there. We had Hindus, Sikhs, Vietnamese, also exchange students. The majority were the kids of wealthy fams in town, and a smaller percentage of middle-class kids whose parents knew the value of such a school. Smaller class sizes, different sports, higher standards of teaching, extra help and kids who were all planning on college afterwards, so no riff-raff and no bullying. Was not religious but did have a tiny chapel that no one used, except for a quiet place to study.

I hate to be that guy. But the Church Of Satan doesn't worship Satan literally. LaVeyan Satanism rejects deities, my understanding is that the symbol of Satan/the fall of Lucifer is used to represent rejecting external authority and embracing individualism and love of the self. Literal 'satan-worshippers' are not Satanists by the modern definition-- if anything most Satanists are atheists. But I'm not sure what information these Satanist 'materials' contained-- it could very well have been a literal interpretation of the idea, ie kid's books about devil-worship. Either way, great job of the part of FFRF calling the district on this.

Regarding privatization of schools: I support a voucher system for all citizen/students. The rich can currently escape bad schools, but the poor & middle class can't. Corrupt school districts construct jubmotrons for jocks, but have virtually no funds for fine arts. Schools that don't waste millions on glorifying athletes, can spend such funds on teacher salaries, books, laboratory equipment etc. Those who want to specialize in football, have the option to stay in the corrupt public school. Students who want to get away from the false idols, should have the freedom to take the voucher to the school of their choice.

As a christian turned Agnostic, and i believe kids should see many different beliefs. Not any of the extreme ones of course. But children shouldn't be subjugated to only one way of thinking. Because if they do open up to other beliefs, it will help them with their own understanding of empathy and conflict solving.

+Msmeliss ox Kids need to be trained to be skeptics and to develop strong critical thinking skills. While it is useful for kids (or anyone) to study world religions from a historical perspective and what people believe throughout the world, I don't think that opening them up to other beliefs has much to do with developing empathy and conflict solving. In fact, most faiths do a pretty deplorable job in both departments
