A fun Dorktown video would be David Ortiz vs Brian Matusz. Ortiz is probably the greatest DH of all time. Matusz was a first round bust. Yet Matusz stuck around the big leagues in part because he had one skill: he could get David Ortiz out. Papi went 4-30 lifetime against Matusz with 13 Ks and no HRs. It’s maybe the craziest example of a middling player owning a HOFer out there
MANCHESTER UNITED Latin America though and the Caribbean plus South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan and you throw in a slue of European countries we are talking about 40 ish countries
As a Pirates fan, I love all the shots you take at them, save for one. The "skinny lad in Pittsburgh" version of Barry Bonds was already a feared hitter, and had more than his fair share of homers.
The only way the absence of Jon Bois for this long will be acceptable is if he's been working on his magnum opus that will drive us all in to sports-charts-narrative ecstasy.
You have an error in here. The game where Benson faced McGwire in Pittsburgh was actually August 8, not August 7. I would know, I was at that game and remember when it happened!! You are spot-on about Gene Lamont, he never pulled his starters. (Some conjecture that's why Benson and Francisco Cordova blew out their arms early).
Steroids were not banned until 2005 and HGH wasn’t banned til 2011…wtf? And if ole Bud Selig gets a plaque then Bonds, Sosa and Mcgwire should as well. After all, they saved baseball.
BTW, the stereo at 10:00 is messed up. Alex's voice comes through on the LEFT side and Grant's voice on the RIGHT. C'mon, you guys, you can get this right.
Yeah but, you never know what's gonna happen in baseball. Look at Mike Vail. A part-time player who hit just 34 homers for his career, in 1983 for the Expos he hit two homers, yet both were against HOF pitcher Steve Carlton. How do you explain that? Plus, remember the sensation Fernando Valenzuela caused as a rookie? Yet the first MLB player to hit a home run off Valenzuela was Chris Speier, never a huge power hitter who hit just two home runs that entire 1981 season. Baseball is full of these statistics because they are not oddities, they are part of the game and what makes it beautiful.
in defense of Hampton giving up homers to players who almost never ding one; a pitcher often has good scouting reports on players and a player like Tatum and Banks, who would both be considered "low risk" home run hitters a pitcher is far more likely to give them a 'meat of the plate" fastball that would have been pounded by McGwire or Sosa almost every time they are given that kind of pitch. Hampton most likely pitched around both batters and rarely gave either of them a solid strike on anything but an 0-3 count.
A future topic - there was a journeyman pitcher in the 1920's and 1930's who owned Babe Ruth - IIRC, the Sultan of Swat's career BA against him was under .200
I take exception to your suggestion that because of Dan Naulty's admitted doping, Sosa and McGwire should be credited with more homeruns....McGwire and Sosa were both doped to the gills....how many homeruns less should they be credited with for that? We've got to stop given McGwire, Sosa and Bonds all this attention that they don't deserve.
I only noticed it at the end but when both are on screen talking back and forth the audio is coming out of the wrong sides. The guy on the left comes out the right ear and the guy on the right comes out the left. Great video, just thought that was an interesting outcome.
I was at a Twins game where McGwire faced the full fury of Bob Tewksbury's 30 MPH fastball. He probably hasn't faced anything that slow since little league. He couldn't get it out of the infield. McGwire was laughing when he got thrown out a first after his last at bat.
Okay, I know everyone wants Jon Bois. I want Jon Bois, can somebody please verify Jon Bois stills exists or at least that Jon Bois is still employed with SB Nation? Will we EVER see Jon Bois again? What did you do to Jon Bois? JON BOIS JON BOIS BOIS ..... jon.... bois.
We just gonna omit that Mike Hampton's love for the excellent Colorado school systems made him sign with the Rockies in 2001? Colorado, where pitchers go to die probably has a big impact on why Sammy started going deep on him
"the stats on all Dominican pitchers giving Sosa fastballs down the middle" is a weird way of spelling 'Jon Bois'. And is also somewhat prejudice. Shame on you.
Sosa should have had 1 more HR added to the list against Hampton. 2003 NLDS Game 2 in the first inning. Was clearly a HR but they didnt give it to him.
The stereo sound is backwards. Like how the right hand batter's box is backwards for the hitter. For the viewer, the sound comes out the opposite speaker than which side you are sitting on.
This video made me realize what makes Jon Bois so good. I can't really tell what they're talking about. Which makes sense, because I'm not a sports fan. The only reason I started watching SB nation videos is because friends recommended a couple videos to me (that Jon Bois did) and they were really interesting and engaging. He's able to communicate the significance of the people and events he features to someone who has no context or prior knowledge. Judging by the other comments, these guys are making an engaging and interesting video - if you're a baseball fan. I probably have no room to ask for this, but bring back Jon Bois! (The other guys are welcome, too, if Jon Bois is involved.)
cool video. stats n shit. oh and toward the end it sounded like the dude on the left was on the right and also the other way. maybe just my speakers???

Too bad Hampton will be remembered for his infamous Colorado stint. To be fair, he almost made it work in 2001 where his first half was good, but then it went downhill from there.

63 1/2 dozen, to be exact.
Ya just a few dozen here & there, nothin too crazy…

The only other DH in the same breath is Edgar Martinez.
Sort of like the reverse of Enrique Wilson v Pedro Martinez. Nice!
Hub Pruett vs Babe Ruth-he fanned Ruth in 14 of 25 career AB. Ok, Ruth did hit .280 with 2 HR but still..
Jon Bois isn’t here. This is a Dorktown tragedy. We will have a day of remembrance soon. When? That’s up to you, buddy.

Hahaha viceroy, nice title. Like czar but more esoteric these days

Jon Bois dead.
He might be working on something pretty good.
Grant is a PRETTY GOOD replacement though
That "King Of No Pop" joke makes me glad that Jon Bois wasn't around to hear it. I have dysentery now.

"the stats on all Dominican pitchers giving Sosa fastballs down the middle" is a weird way of spelling 'Jon Bois'. And is also somewhat prejudice. Shame on you.
But also, I would be *very* willing to go down that rabbit hole if it was backed up by (cool) charts.
Did Chicago even play Boston in 1998? Sammy does have 2 career home runs off Pedro.
