if he missed every free throw, wouldn't the "Hack-a-Shaq" strategy have been even more of a thing? he wouldn't be 0-for-11252, he'd be 0-for-30k or more...
I'm curious about what would have happened (same analytics) if he was a decent free throw shooter. How much would it have helped his teams if he made 80-85%??
He and Wilt were the most dominant forces in NBA history. If he was even decent at free throw shooting, he’s pretty much unstoppable and would’ve won 2 or 3 more championships.
matt According to Shaq himself, it was one of the greatest regrets of his career, because he could have moved much higher up on the all time scoring list
Dusk TheHunter You don’t even have to ask we have that, it’s called Wilt’s 100 point game. One of the few times in his career he was competent from the line, he shot 28-32.
I played my brother in 2K some years ago, back when Shaq was still playing and at a high level. I became quite pissed, because my brother shot (and made) more 3s in that game with Shaq than Shaq attempted in his entire career, and hit them at an 90% clip, including a 3/4 court shot to win at the buzzer.
Here you go, folks. This is what would ultimately give us The Mariners, The Falcons, Dave Steib, Steve Bono getting outrun by an O lineman, and a literal plane crash.
Alright!!! Jon is back and he brought a friend to play dork with!!! This is awesome!!! Can't wait to fill my head with all of the knowledge these two will bestow on me!!
One more thing to consider: what % of missed free throws did Shaq’s team get offensive rebounds? Some of Shaq’s misses would have resulted in points for his team, how big an impact on the data would that have?
they didnt put much into this one cause shaq didnt take many shots outside of 6 feet and to say Steph shoots better from 3 than him from 7 feet and out is kind of stupid to say ....shaq would take mayb 1 7+ foot hook every other game..maybe ..
Was just listening to a song by J Dilla and guilty Simpson today what has the lyrics 'I don't make raps for free, if I did I wouldn't make it like Shaq from three' what a coincidence. Love the new series though
My sister told me about this strategy she discovered after decades of research on how to succeed (generally in whatever). It’s fairly simple: work on things you excel at while never putting too much effort in things you’re terrible at cause they’re a lost cause. My immediate thought was Shaq. Shaq is a player who does what Shaq does best while never needing to care about what he does poorly. If you took Shaq’s skill set in a game like NBA live or NBA 2K and evened then out across the board... he’d be an interesting player... So, take all stats Shaq has (PPG, shots per game, rebounds, steals, blocks, etc) and weigh them against the average. By percentage of players who’ve had enough time on the court for their stats to be relevant. The average = a value of 5. You take what Shaq did and figure out his value based on the average. So... from 1992-2011 the FG% was collectively .477 Shaqs carreer FG% is .582 (582x5)/477 = 6.1 He’s 1.1 above average in FG% through his entire career. I’m curious how his stats as a whole would be laid out if this were done for all of his stats against the average, then all of his stats were evened out across the board.
My favorite Shaq statistic is that when David Robinson claimed the scoring title in the 93-94 season after dumping in 71 points in the final game of the season to beat him by 1 half point (29.8 to 29.3). They were 1 and 2 in total free throws attempted. If Shaq had made just 28 more free throws of the 850 he attempted, he would have won the scoring title by .02 points
I don't understand what these guys are so amazed by? Its like they never saw him play. I think going from the 2 seed and winning a championship to not making the playoffs is a pretty enormous difference. They act like its no big deal.
no, the zephyrs were a different team and moved to Baltimore, then DC. The Bulls are a completely different team (and 3 years separate the two teams in chicago)
hey... Im all glad for the update of the show and all.. two thumbs... but before you get all willy nilly with your new stuff, can you go back and upload the missing EPISODES OF CHART PARTY PLEASE.. i mean, at least if its a copyright issue, send me a link to it so i can watch it at my (read: our) pleasure. Thanks in advance!!!
Pretty neat video. Never followed basketball much, but I found this video pretty interesting. I've been a fan of Chart Party for a while, and while this video is different, I certainly wouldn't say it's "worse and not-as-good". It's certainly not Chart Party, but it's not bad. Anyways, if having this series means getting to watch more stuff with Jon Bois and his charts and graphs (which make both sports and statistics interesting to me), that makes it pretty good in my book.
I have no doubt that Dorktown is easier to produce than Chart Party, and I love that we get more of Jon, but I do love the editing and storytelling of Chart Party. I hope that Dorktown is a complement to Chart Party and not a replacement for it.
I'm from Orlando. As a tween, I loved the NBA because of Jordan. When Shaq came to the Magic in the draft I was stoked. Then I heard Nirvana and my interest in basketball was replaced by music. Yet, I still followed Shaq's career--and other Magic players--and glad to know, statically hypothetically--he sucked at free-throws but still remains as a GOAT
Erik Chancy it happened a couple of times actually already justin had jon on a review of a sports game and jons episode of pretty good about the 1904 olympic marathon has sydnee as a medical expert
I could swear I remember Shaq hitting a three from the corner in a fairly important moment... maybe it was a long two but the image is just stuck in my head.
I think this is an interesting exercise. A more interesting one would be: what if Shaq was an average free throw shooter or an all time great at free throw shooting.
Shaq named his boat Free Throw because he knows he’ll never sink it

I feel bad for SB Nation. There's an entire team they have and all we want from them, is Jon Bois.

theunwelcome that's what I was thinking
There's so many factors missed, if he missed every free throw wouldn't there be some offensive rebounds?
Yes,they would have hacked more. Although, there would only be so many more times he could be fouled before his opponents fouled out.
Obviously, but the stats would stay the same. Besides, there is really no way to calculate that
DJCoggins obviously? If Shaq, literally missed every free throw he wouldn’t see anywhere near the court time.
JON. YES.
Basketball is my favorite sport. I like the way they dribble up and down the court.

The average = a value of 5.
You take what Shaq did and figure out his value based on the average.
So... from 1992-2011 the FG% was collectively .477
Shaqs carreer FG% is .582
