There are sooo many meanings I can see. I love songs like this for that reason. The first verse could be a girl who has been abused. Possibly domestic abuse, possibly growing up that way, possibly human trafficking. I see them all as possibilities. Whatever she is, she feels like she's underwater, and a caged bird. She's in the dark. She's in the cold. Could also mean homeless but like I said, so many meanings.
Second verse could be suicidal. Faint sound of friends: she can't hear the sounds of her friends and probably believes she is very alone. She has no hope for the situation.
In both situations, death is something she welcomes. She doesn't mind.
Maybe she's singing about herself when she was smaller, Just like you said, there can be a lot of meanings.

There's a girl who I loved more than I've ever loved anyone before, and I was her first love. She shared this song with me at the end of 2019, but things happened and I had to walk away because it felt like she was gonna drive me to suicide. I've healed, but the love I had for her is something I miss dearly, I've never felt that way about anyone again, not even half as much. Something good came from it at least, she shared a lot of great music with me that I still love to this day.
