That equals almost 19 grams per gallon if I'm correct? Thank seemed like a crazy amount ones I started Weighing it out. I just wanted to verify the amount is correct and if so do you use this method for all fish that come in or do you get some Species that can't handle that much salt?

      Tina,
      I use the same meds for all the fish. I cut the salt down 50% for species that are sensitive to it, but I don't find med dosages make much difference. I just put a hundred or so silver hatchets through without any issue. For parasites, I use Flubendazole, Metro, Prazi, Levamosole, and Ich-X. I don't always use them all, but i have them ready. I also use copper when needed. I have not used copper with silver dollars and hatchets, so I don't know if they are extra sensitive to it or not.

    Dan, I noticed that you did not add any tank water into the bags of fish prior to releasing them into the tank. Are you not concerned with differences in water parameters (Ph, hardness, etc)

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 років тому +1

      Good question. The short answer is no. I've never found the difference in parameters to be a big deal to most fish. What IS a big deal is all the pollutants which build up in the bag with the fish. I've found that the sooner I get them out of that dirty water, the better. I used to mix water, drip acclimate...I've tried many methods. What seems to work best most consistently is just more-or-less equalizing temps and them putting the fish straight into the new tank. This helps prevent ammonia toxicity and other problems which are much more serious than pH or most other parameter differences. In fact, I will sometimes skip the temperature equalization step if the fish are in obviously foul water.

    Hi Dan, hoping you’ll see this even though it’s an old video! We’re new to the hobby of fish (but have raised an aquatic turtle for 20 yrs so have *some* aquarium experience). Sick of losing fish left and right coming from our LFS, no matter how we chose to quarantine or introduce them to our tanks, and becoming increasingly enamored with your videos and business process, we placed a large order from you last night and are excitedly preparing for their arrival!
    My question is: when receiving fish from you, who have specifically already been put through the ringer of meds, do you advise or recommend against a second similar round of treatment after they ship to us? I feel like I’ve collected just about every fish med under the sun, but would it be literal overkill to put their little bodies through more meds again in a relatively short amount of time? Do you recommend just an observational qt for fish that come from you?
    Regardless if you answer or not, I just want to thank you for running a business that is very transparent and seems to genuinely care about each little fish that passes through your hands. I was happy to shell out a bit more (especially for shipping) to buy from a source that puts so much time and thought into their husbandry and shipping process before they even are put up for sale!

    Such another great video! I saved this one😊 what kind of ammonia strips do you like to use? I use the master api kit but if I see ammonia I like to have a second test, I treated my tank with Levamisole a couple weeks ago and I think it crashed my cycle, my tank got cloudy and I checked my levels and I have 1.0 maybe even a bit higher, I immediately did a 60% water change, and will do another tomorrow, I also just added api quick start with that large water change, am I on the right track? I added a few days ago carbon to my HOB to clear meds could that spike my Ammonia?

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 років тому

      Howdy Heather,
      I use the Tetra test strips. I am cheep, so I cut them in half length-wise and turn a bottle of 100 into 200.
      I've never had Levamisole hurt my filter. However, it does kill all kinds of worms and inverts so, it is likely that it killed a bunch of detritus worms and other critters in your tank and, when they decomposed, that caused the ammonia spike. It sounds like you are on the right track to deal with the ammonia. I would also stop feeding for a few days (much better to have hungry fish than to have ammonia) and carefully vacuum the gravel and clean any poly fill or other mechanical filtration out to try and get rid of as much of the decaying bio load as possible. Be sure to do this in a way that does not disturb your biological filter...you need all the nitrifying bacteria you can get right now. One other trick is to add Seachem Prime or Safe to the tank to help detoxify the ammonia as things get sorted out. Hopefully, things will settle down in a couple of days. Oh, and adding an airstone can help too...all that biological decay can really suck up your tanks oxygen.

      @heatherleelovejoy9690 5 років тому

      Dans Fish great thanks Dan I didn’t even think about why the ammonia spiked dire to decaying worms, I added a seeded sponge filter to the tank hoping that will help, tomorrow I’ll clean out the hob filter sponges and poly fill, thanks so much for responding! I have referred you to a lot of Facebookers and UA-camrs 😊

    • @DansFish

      Yep. The problem with Levamasole is that it really works and kills all kinds of nematodes, not just the ones in the fish. Hope it all goes well for you...please do let me know how it turns out. Ammonia is nasty stuff. And thanks for the referrals...every bit helps!

      Dans Fish update: by the end of the day Wednesday the ammonia got up to 2ppm, so yesterday (Thursday) I cleaned out my HOB sponges added new Polly Fill did a 30% water change a good gravel vac, added water condition, turned up my 2 sponge filters flow, and today Friday the water is crystal clear and the Ammonia is down to 0.25, 0 Nitrite, 10 Nitrate, I’m so glad! So today I won’t feed again and do a 25-30% water change, I still have 1 fish acting a little strange but better then he has the last few days, my arm is killing me from carrying buckets! Unfortunately this tank is in my basement the only tank I haul buckets 😬 the life of being a fish lover! • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 років тому +2

      Salt helps a fish keep its osmotic balance correct. It takes a lot of energy for a freshwater fish to keep the fresh water surrounding it from rushing into its body. The fish is salty. The water is fresh. The fresh water wants to go into the fish to balance the equation. Adding salt to the water surrounding a fresh water fish makes it easier for the fish to prevent the fresh water from flowing in. Basically, it makes it so the fish's body does not have to work so hard. When fish are freshly imported and stressed, they can then take some of the energy they would normally be using to stop the fresh water influx and put it towards healing, recovering, and fighting illness.

    Quick questions from a newbie here. I've seen people recommending to have CYCLED tanks ready to quarantine and medicate fish. I saw that you sterilized your quarantine tanks and filled them up again with water. I see an air stone and water coming in. My question is: are those tanks cycled already? or are you using water from a cycled aquarium to fill the tanks? I did not see a sponge filter inside those tanks, but again, I have no idea if you have any other type of filtration going on. Could you clarify that for me? I just had to ask to better understand the process. Thanks.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  4 роки тому +2

      If you are just going to do an observational quarantine on the fish, then, yes. A cycled tank is good. However, the antibiotics I use will kill the nitrifying bacteria which the cycle depends on. Because of this, I quarantine my fish in sterile, unfiltered, uncycled tanks. I change about 50% of the water daily to keep it clean and I don't feed the fish while medicating with antibiotics (unless they are emaciated) so their is no fish poop. No poop = no ammonia. No ammonia = no need to filter. This, of course, if temporary. After antibiotic treatment, they are moved to fully cycled, mature tanks and fed very well.

    Hey there Dan! Do you still recommend this method when buying fish from you?

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  11 місяців тому +3

      I think keeping the fish in a well established aquarium by themselves and observing them for a couple of weeks to a month before adding them to an aquarium with other fish in it is probably the best quarantine method for the average hobbyist. I've found that hospital tanks and meds can be tricky for those unfamiliar with them, so I think observation is probably best.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 років тому

      Robert,
      That is a good question. Getting new fish is always a gamble. Quarantine mitigates that risk, but it does not eliminate it. It depends on the odds you want to gamble with. Usually, folks do great with fish they get from me and I think this is largely because of my quarantine/recover process. However, there are times when folks get fish from me and there is a problem. It is an inevitable, although infrequent, occurrence. It really is just a numbers game. I'd say it is always safer to quarantine new fish no matter where they come from, but the increased safety might be marginal. Knowing that, I'd say it is up to you...we all choose how we gamble.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 років тому

      It is one of those things that most folks don't do until they run into an issue. Once an entire tank of fish has been wiped out by the introduction of an un-quarantined specimen, folks quickly become really interested in quarantine. That being said, it is ALWAYS a gamble when we get new fish. Quarantine just strengthens our odds of a positive result. Everyone gambles in their own way, and that is fine. I choose to gamble with quarantine on my side and I think the results speak for themselves.

      @@DansFish definitely. And customers appreciate it :)
      After reading people's horror stories, I've realized how really lucky I've been in the past, especially getting fish from PetCo/Smart and Walmart.
      I'll quarantine now, but my biggest dilemma is preventative treatment or not. I've been trying to weigh the pros and cons of each. On one hand, I don't want to stress out the fish by medicating for no reason; on the other, I might not be able to see if there is a reason or not. I don't want to have to clean out the whole tank if there's a parasite outbreak or something.

    • @DansFish
      @DansFish  5 років тому

      People do it different ways. Rachel O'leary is a pro, and, from what I understand, she prefers clean water, good food, and observation to meds. If I was not bringing in so many freshly imported fish at a time, I might just observe for a month or so before adding new fish to my other fish. My case is different from most hobbyists in that I am dealing with super stressed imports that have just been through the ringer. That's the reason I use meds.
