Thanks this is an awesome video, as an FYI, some medications that treat parasites are antibiotics. I used to raise sheep and have horses, its interesting to see that some of these are used for dewormers in large animals as well.
I've personally had a lot of success with potassium permanganate. I definitely prefer starting with lighter meds like aquarium salt/methylene blue, but that hasn't always been enough. Specifically with my guppies. When they got sick with skin flukes (confirmed under microscope), salt & water changes wasn't enough. Potassium permanganate works really well and has never killed a single fish (i've treated fry multiple times and they're all still alive)

Hey Rachel, thanks for sharing your process. You said you disinfect your nets routinely.
How do you do that?
Would like to know what she uses as well but one that I know of is a product called Phyzann 20 that is used in a lot of horticulture applications for disinfecting tools as not to transfer pathogens from plant to plant. It IS SUPER TOXIC. As an FYI there is a lot of things that can go wrong if you use it wrong. Be very cautious it is a carcinogen. I would rather not have it in my house. I am not sure but bleach might work as well, the issue with bleach is it can damage nets and some tools so you need to be aware of what you use it on.
Thank you for great info on quarantine new fish. You said when it comes to med, less is more so, when you get a new fish, you just put them in separate tank and observe and treat the fish if they show any sign of illness? You don't do like Cory's med trio then? One thing I worry for med trio thing is, once used for pre treating fish,things like antibiotic could make the fish to be resistance to med and might not be able to use it when it really needed to be used and I am bit iffy about using antibiotic when you are not sure if needed or not. I am getting panda corydras. I will put them in quarantine tank but should I watch them closely and treat as needed?I heard panda cory is more sensitive kind than other kind and wondering what med to use if I pretreat them. I thought polifilter thing sounds great idea.I will look it up.Thank you.
That is exactly correct- I ONLY medicate if I have an idea of what I am treating for. This means less medications down the drain into our waterways, less antibiotic resistance, and less stress for fish that may be healthy.
@@RachelOLeary Thank you very much for quick reply. If you ever see panda cory start flashing, what med would you use? I ask because last batch of cory had 2 that were flashing and tried paraguard but no effect on them and lost 3 out of 6.Those 3 that were not flashing went to destination tank and this week, extra panda to join those 3 panda after quarantine time but I was wondering if same thin happen, what you would recommend to use.Also, I got otto just today and put them into quarantine tank. When algae is all gone, what would you feed? Most says zucchini, pepper, cucumber, green beans, broccoli, spinach but anything else I can feed them safely? Thank you.
For Ich I use 1 tsp Salt/gal for cories, 1 1/2 tsp salt/gal for loaches and most fish, and 2 tsp salt/gal for cichlids and livebearers if needed. I build the salt content up by 1/2 tsp/gal every 8 hours until I reach appropriate levels. AND NEVER letting the water drop below 87 degrees... not even for 5 minutes. Treatment last for 10 days beyond last sighting of whitespots. I never get a second outbreak of ich.
+Catfish Cave I might have to raise my temperature up to 87, because 85 degrees is not working. I mean it is but now some more of my fish that didn't have ich before now got it. I am treating the tank with medicine, but the natural one which takes more time to get rid of ich. I an't do salt because I have a planted tank.
+MsArtemis01 There are resistant strains as well, which is why I like quinine sulfate.
+Rachel O'leary I heard of those strains which I'm a little worried about. Hopefully I got the non incredible hulk version of Ich. But after this hard lesson, everything gets quarantine. The good sign are my fish are hungry as ever as they eat everything I give them. I'm boosting up their immune system as best as I can get it, and doing 3 day water changes to not stress them out too much and refresh the natural medication I'm giving them. Hopefully this nightmare ends by next month.
The Hulk version of ich... is usually a result of a temporary drop below 86 degrees... during which a few tomites/theronts survive to find a host. Thats why I set my heater at 87.. it clicks on at 86... if I set it at 86, it clicks on at 85... 86 seems to be the Killing point.
just make sure with temps that high you really jam the aeration

Great video Rachel! I appreciate all the knowledge that your feeding our brains too. I just wanted to have your opinion on this. So I live in an apartment and barely any space. I only have a spare 10 gallon for qt, and I'm planning to get 6 discus for my 55. Do you think the 10 gallon will be able to handle the discus for 4 to 6 weeks and not make the parameters fluctuate?

@@mitch9946 with frequent maintenance you should be fine. At that size, they need to eat a lot, so just spot clean after each feeding
SORRY FOR SUCH A LONG POST! But I am so worried about my fish.
Wonderful information!! Just what I was looking for. Being a novice fish keeper, I got my first tank about 3 months ago (a freebee from Craigslist). The tank a 37 gallon came with 5 fish. 1 giant Pleco around 8 inches long and 4 silver dollar fish. I have been having trouble keeping the Nitrates low in spite of having a relatively large Anabus plant in the tank as well as putting bio home filter media in the filter about 4 weeks ago in addition to pot scrubbies, course and fine DIY media. I check the water perimeters with the API test kit about every 3 days now and end up doing a water change to lower the nitrate levels. Everything is perfect except the Nitrates. I change about 50% of the water at a time. In the first month I noticed the Pleco getting a light "cloudy" bars of whatever on her. At first I thought it was the lighting that was making this apparent to me. As when she in different light she looked like the cloudiness (which looks like Fungus) was not there. I was treating with Paraguard proactively when I first got the fish, with each water change, I was using half a dose with Prime of course. So I did not think it was fungus. Just recently I noticed all my Silver Dollars with a small "mustache", if you will, of light cloudiness across the top lip of their mouths. ALL 4 OF THEM!! YIKES! So I treated the entire tank with the full dose of Paraguard daily for around 10 days. It had no effect on the Pleco but the "mustaches" on the Silver Dollars were all gone except for a very small patch on each still on the top lip. All fish were eating well until around a week and a half ago (I think), that was also when I cut some pieces of my Pothos plant and put it in the tank to cut down on the nitrates. I noticed the smallest Silver Dollar was not interested in eating the food I was giving, which was the same food I always fed them from when I first got them. I feed frozen brine shrimp, frozen blood worms, small amounts of frozen daphnia, cut up frozen shrimp, spectrum pellets. After I used up all my Paraguard I purchased Kanaplex. So instead of dosing the entire tank I was taking the small Silver dollar out and putting her in a 3 gallon bucket with the medicated Kanaplex (most of the water was allowed to gas off then I added warm water to bring it up to temperature added the Prime and Kanaplex then the fish for 30 minutes at a time). I did this for 3 doses skipping a day in between each treatment. She still does not seem interested in food, however I do notice her munching on the Indian Almond leaf decaying on the bottom of the tank and the Potho's!! So I have been putting in curly leaf kale and today I put a small leaf of red cabbage in. I take the uneaten portion out of the tank daily. What can I do to get these fish back to health and heal up what ever is on their lips and get my little silver dollar to eat regular meals?
Anubis is a very slow growing plan that will not help you with nitrate problems... You need to do water changes to get rid of it everyday especially in such a small tank like that

Silver Dollar fish are eat plants. I also had a little duck weed in there and that disappeared (I have to get more). That is why I also put the Potho's in there. Oh and by the way I am running an Aqueon hob 55/75 for filtration packed with my aformentioned DYI media.
+Destiny's Pet Project Dog Rescue I'm new to this to I do know if your treating tank try not to use chemical media it takes out medicine. I say just keep an eye on them. I believe it is a fungus not to sure api has a med called melifix it a few different diseases you could look into that or medicated food like rachel mentioned I say keep doing your research and ask a vet if you can. kgtropicals has a forum on Facebook where he gives advice if you have an emergency try him. just in case rachel doesn't get to your question in time
+Destiny's Pet Project Dog Rescue If your fish is eating something, and it seems like you are giving medicine external and internal like in their frozen food, then it may be just waiting it all out. My fish has either Ich or Fungus. I thought it was ich until I saw white mustache on two of my rummy nose tetras mouth. So I am treating both. As long as my fish are eating and are schooling properly, I'm on a waiting period at this time which sucks. I don't like to see my animals sick. Also, I use seachem garlic guard each feeding as I soak it in their food. They love it. Now I am starting to feed them peas to flush out there system and give them fiber. I'm working on the cucumber part to make it part of their diet.

I treated with Paraguard from Seachem for around 5 to 7 days at full strength (before the "sickness", I was treating half strength with Paraguard as a proactive deterrent, with each weekly water change, with at least 2 Indian Almond leaves in the tank). I ran out of Paraguard then purchased Kanaplex and did a 30 minute "dip" for that one fish for 3 days skipping a day inbetween (which is the maximum treatment) with this medicine. But not for a dip, I thought of the dipping myself. It seemed to work a little. The fish began to show more interest in food, but only vegetation not pellets or the frozen blood worms or brine shrimp. So the fish is eating duckweed and bits of a potho's that I put in there to help lower the nitrates. I put the pothos in there until my biohome filter media begins to culture anaerobic bacteria to help with the nitrates. However it is my understanding that Potho's are poisonous!! I am not sure if they are poisonous to fish or not but my Silver Dollar is going to town eating the roots and the leaves!!! The fish is still alive and seems to be doing well. I will follow up with Nourish Vitamins from Seachem and the Garlic. So far all is well.
I am so, so, so happy to hear that you use salt. I get beat up all the time in fish groups for using salt. Like you, I don't use it with all species, but ...

That's the only time I ever use it ... well, it does seem to help at a low dosage with betta's at my house. Something about the water here. But other than that, I usually only use it with incoming quarantined fish that get ick. And only if I know the species will tolerate it. But I have been attacked several times by people who think you should NEVER use salt in a freshwater tank.

I think i generally do about 20:1, i don't really use an exact science though, more like pour some into my bucket, and fill with super hot water.

I have some wild fish that refuses repashy or pellet so i feed tubifex at the moment. Is it possible if i add praziquantel to the tubifex 30 minutes before feeding to make sure they ingest it?
After I got ich in my main tank, everyone is getting quarantine now.
This is great info. Thanks for sharing. You mentioned a future video on making medicated foods, but a quick search didn't reveal it. When using Repashy, is there any concern that the heat needed to set the gelatin will damage the medication?
I haven't had to medicate! I wait to mix in the meds until after mixing the repashy, so before it is set but not while its boiling. Doesn't seem to impact the efficacy. I prefer to boil the water, then add it to the powder, as opposed to microwaving

+guillaume nel Depends on which medication. Antibiotics for instance may suggest water changes after "x" days, but they only have efficacy for about 12 hours, so you can do as many as you want without impacting the viability of the medication.

I even quarantine plants, so yes. Everything gets an observation period. Rather safe than sorry

I have a pill for a 10kg dog which includes 50mg praziquantel, 150mg fenbendazole and 144 mg pirantel pamoat.
also i have a 500mg metronidazol (flagyl). How should i deliver and at what dosage and for how long?
I have a small hospital container of 3 liters, filtered heated and aired which contains two platys, two Black skirt tetras, a neon and a celestial pearl danio :-( one platy has fin rot, the other likes to stand at the bottom, two tetras and neon have bulgy eyes also one of the black skirt tetras have a red gill on one side and the galaxy has (almost) a missing stomach, im thinking a bacteria is eating it from inside :-(.
should i give medication per liter of water or mg per fish? or if i mix medication with food, how much of that will i gave per liter or per fish? please help. Thnx.
Hi again, here is what i'm doing for medication.
Metronizadol: 20ppm, 3 x 48hrs
Praziquantel: 2 ppm, 2 x 72hrs
Medication is not finished yet but all hospitalized sick fish seem to be doing not worse for now...
Is there anything you would recommend, as just like a general preventative measure, while new fish are in quarantine? Even if not showing any visible signs of illness?

Rachel, I got ick when I added dwarf rainbows to my main tank. The only fish that had ick was my torquiose rainbow which I only have one in my 46 gal cause my daughter moved and gave it to me. I know he is a group fish but I cannot do that my tank is too small to have too many large rainbows. Is it possible that he was stress because he is alone without a group of him? I plan to put some congo fish should I rehome him where he will have a bigger tank with his kind? I am afraid I will get ick again. Please help. He is the boss in my tank.

I find velvet to be a bit tricky to treat, I would suggest you read over this PDF, salt is a recommended treatment, though I often find it takes too long (as we don't often notice velvet right away) and formalin is a better option. edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pdffiles/FA/FA04100.pdf

Do you leave your quarantine tanks running even if there aren't any fishes to be quarantined? If not (since to me it doesn't make sense), what do we do when we have a fish that's suddenly acting up and we want to setup the quarantine tank? How much of the existing tank water do we put into the quarantine tank? 50%? None? Start with fresh water?
+Lakshminarayanan Krishnan I leave mine running, because i get in fish constantly, but for most hobbyists it is wiser to break them down and store them so that they do not automatically become display tanks. When I did things that way,, I would keep extra media in my canisters or HOB's to move to the QT tank to minimize the cycle. I don't generally move actual water to the QT tank.
