Especially on the part of this clip where the steering wheel is installed and Senna gets the feel of it. Research from those who viewed on-board footage before the crash saw something amiss with the wheel approaching Tamburello, suspecting the steering column was broken.

    • @CaptainSpadaro
      @CaptainSpadaro 5 років тому +6

@@MatthewDaSmitdog The general consensus is that that's what happened. Senna's steering column, which had been lengthened on-site at his request (there wasn't enough lead time to have an entirely new column manufactured and shipped to the track), broke on the 7th lap.
One wonders what that onboard camera saw right before impact.

When people say things like. When “racers were real racers “ they were tougher. Maybe. But because they had to be. Just looking at these cars its truly a miracle many more driver weren’t lost during this era. These things were total death traps. And cost lots of life. I am super thankful for the safety today. Super thankful. I lost my childhood hero’s in racing. And im glad some kids like say Romain Grosjean’s kids get to see their father. Senna was just too young. Its still as sad today to me as it was as a 12 yr old at the time.

A suspensão ativa compensava essas ondulações lendo o asfalto e adaptando a suspensão, mantendo o chassi sempre na melhor atitude e altura do solo, maximizando a pressão aerodinâmica.

I believe the tests at Paul Ricard were before the ones at Estoril, because at Paul Ricard he is still using a Shoei X-4 helmet (the same from 1992 & 1993) but in the new Rothmans livery, he then switched to the Bell M3 at Estoril, which is the one he used for Aida, Interlagos and Imola.

He takes understeer lines at apexes like Alonso with Renault and as he lets off gas , the front recovers grip so quickly and the rear kicks out. This is how my 997 gt3 runs like, and it’s really really scary when I was not used to it. 997 GT3 Driver’s fix this characteristics by putting either wider front tires or wheel spacers. I can see that the Williams had too week mechanical front grip for the power it had.

You can see that the car is unstable. Senna didn't like it, it's clear in the expression on his face. Senna wanted to drive the FW15C adapted to the 94 regulations. He liked the car, it was fast and more reliable. Adrian Newey and Patrick Head did not accept.

  • @ultrapaiva

During this test, after his first run, he climbed out of the car and said to Brazilian F1 journalist Flávio Gomes: “Holy sh*t, right when it’s my turn to drive the car, they f*cked up the car”.
Years later, Adrian Newey recognized in his book that the 94 car was an “evolution” of the 93 car without the active suspension and electronics. He conceded that they should have taken a page from Williams’ last passive suspension car (91?) and use that as a base of development for 94, making a better car to drive through bumps. The 94 aero (of the beginning of the championship as they evolved and fixed it afterwards) was very sensitive to ride height and while this was ok for the 93 active suspension car, it didn’t work for the 94 passive suspension car.

While in the rest of the video he uses the Bell M3 which is more round, similar to the Bell XFM-1 he used from '84 thru '89. Actually by 1992 it was perfectly obvious to anybody that Williams had by far the better car, not just the Renault engine. Even if Honda would have produced a more powerful engine, the McLaren chassis of 1992 still wasn't on the same level as the very advanced Williams with all it's active ride height and traction control.
Senna was thinking of a sabbatical for 1993 and McLaren had Hakkinen ready to replace him (coming from Lotus), but in the last moment Senna signed a race per race deal.

The thing was Peugeot had dominated the 1992 and 1993 24 hours of LeMans with their Group C racecars. Ron Dennis had already seen Porsche dominate Group C sportscar racing in the 80's and therefore let Porsche build the TAG V6 turbo, with which McLaren won 3 driver's titles and 2 constructor's titles. Signing Peugeot seemed like a shrew move.
Lamborghini struggled with their engines in other teams in the early 90's, and Chrysler didn't want to bankroll the development of the F1 Lambo engine

Actually Benetton had the best car in 1994, but how could Senna have predicted that?
Both Senna and Hill complained that the 1994 Williams was nigh on undrivable without all its former electronical driver aid's which made the 1992 and 1993 Williams so dominant. Schumacher on the other hand admitted that until 2002 the best car he had ever driven was the 1994 Benetton. It may not have had the best engine but the chassis was brilliant. Some even say it was illegal. Senna thought so at least.

Frank Williams wanted to sign Mika Hakkinen to partner Alain Prost in Williams for 1993. It seemed that as if it was a done deal when Lotus somehow blocked Hakkinen's transfer. When they couldn't get Hakkinen they promoted their test driver Damon Hill to race driver. The rest is history.
Then again Hakkinen ended up in McLaren instead, and that was a good story in itself.

I remember Senna complained that this understeer car all of sudden turns into oversteer car after the first winter test and I finally see what he was talking about.

It is just that it was his outlap, brakes and tires were cold and he was still trying to learn the car, it's pretty obvious that he wasn't going to push it to he limit yet.
