When things are built to a high quality standard, they are worth restoring and rebuilding. You will never see a better made grinder than this again, and now it’s restored it will last another lifetime. Outstanding!
This is my new favorite restoration channel, forget Netflix of Amazon, a beer chips and this video, no talk all show and tell, the way I like it. Cant wait for a vintage bicycle restore, like a Raleigh or something or a vintage table fan.
This looks like it’s from 70s maybe early 80s. Definitely looks like a model I remember seeing in the garage that my dad had. He use to brag craftsman for the lifetime warranty replacement. Guess we finally got the answer as to what lifetime they meant. Regardless of what decade this grinder was made in, it was made back when they made things to last. Even as a kid the 80s was a hell of a time to be alive.
Possibly the best balanced grinder ever made. When new it would spin for 3 minutes after being shut off. Mine bought in 1972 are both still running fine.
Yet another great video. You are spoiling us. Oh but the the red vixen of a trolly jack has stolen my soul. You are the chosen one. You are the Captain of restoration. May your tools get bigger and brighter. May you get many many sponsors
I remember those old plugs from way back. Never thought I'd see one again. I've not thought about them in so many years. It brought back pleasant memories of my great-grandmother's house.
This press has worked like a charm for my projects ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxajoEbapTfqWaadnqb04h6U576yxXp-FE . I didn't even secure it to my table top, mainly due to the fact that I was using a 15 lbs drill vise. It's not flimsy at all as to what others have claimed it to be. Make sure the locking nuts and levers are secured and there won't be any issues with light pressure and patience. I was able to drill through aluminum, plastic, and steel (steel took a while) with no problems at all. Yeah it took a little longer than a regular drill press, but I don't have the space OR the money for one.The instruction manual was worthless, but luckily assembling the press was intuitive. However, the manual would be good for ordering replacement parts if needed. There is a nice breakdown of the parts that are included in the kit. Before ordering, make sure it is compatible with your unit, it is clearly stated what models the press is compatible with. This was an excellent purchase for $40!!

Seen this grinder in some of your more recent videos and knew it had to be one of your projects because it was so beautifully clean. Yep. THAT is a grinder worthy of envy.
I am trying to get my own You tub channel started. Two projects I want to do is one, I have an old school die grinder with the flexlible shaft in the original wood box from the 40s more than likely . I bought it off of Ebay from and estate of a jeweler . I am going to do a youtube video on that and I also have an American Made solvent tank I am going to restore and also to that on on UA-cam its probably over 50 years old .I already have the pump and found and American made parts cleaning brush for it too. I love old school tools they will never make things like this again and love to see them restored the pride and craftsmanship is dead and gone and will never be back . Great job I love it

That is a nice grinder and stand. Love the old craftsman line of shop tools. All cast iron solid. I really hope you do more of this craftsman line of shop tools.
You did a fantastic job. Good the lamp shade wasn't damaged. The cord plug is top quality. Always important to have solid safe electrical connections. A Craftsman restored a Craftsman tool.
Very good job. Love to see old tools restored and put back into service. I wish I had a metal lathe and milling machine, but too late now. I'm over 70, no time to begin learning. My dad took a machine shop course in high school and at one time could operate a metal lathe, but I do woodworking and cannot begin to weld or do anything with metal. Oh well, maybe next incarnation?
It's never too late buddy. You're 70 but commenting on UA-cam videos so you're very capable. Find something in your area like a machine shop or college campus or somewhere where you can donate some time and also learn the skill that you want to learn. Go do it. Ask the worst they can do is say no. Then go ask again. You can do it.
Not sure if this information has already been provided, but here's some facts re: this grinder: Craftsman made them from 1950 until the late 70s early 80s. It cost $72.95 new in Craftsman's catalog [1959]. The shipping weight was 85lbs-35lbs being the cast iron/steel pedestal. An online inflation calculator puts the cost of this grinder at $786 in 2024 and the stand at $183. The embossed "11 58" indicates this unit was mfg in Nov. 1958 and the "115" prefix in the model number indicates it was built by Sunlight Electrical Mfg Co./Packard Electric Co. for Craftsman. [edit]: Btw; great video.
Beautiful restoration. I restored my block grinder too, but did not go nearly as in depth as you did. I really like how you stuck with the original color scheme.

Nice job. These projects (and videos) take an awful lot of time. Much respect. Most my videos are substantially smaller projects, and they still take a while!
I have had my grinder just like yours for it must be 55 or more years now. It is in as new shape because about two weeks after I purchased it I was in a terrible accident when a 17 year old brat hit my car in its rear. He was going somewhere around 50-60 when he hit me as I waited for the light to turn green. Anyways I wasn’t able to work after having my neck fractured in two places and four vertebra ruptured leaving me paralyzed from my waist down. I was a mechanic until that time but I haven’t worked an hour sense. Nice job on the Craftsman 3/4 hp grinder.
When I was watching this, the computer technician in me was like, “where’s the grounding plug?” Lo and behold, you have delivered. Well done, sir. You’ve breathed new life into that old tool. ❤
5:06 Me too...me too. Also, if you notice the scanning black bars in your footage at 20:19-20:25 you can get rid of them by adjusting your shutter speed to a divisor of 60 if you're in the US (1/60, 1/120, 1/180, etc) or 50 if you're elsewhere in the world (1/50, 1/100, 1/150, etc).
