Every time I see Karl Urban in something I have a really hard time reconciling the character he’s playing with all the other characters he’s previously played because he embodies them so completely. My husband and I were watching The Boys and I mentioned that it was hard to think about him as McCoy and his mind was blown because he also had completely put that out of his mind
Karl Urban has had quite a career. He's been in an awful lot of successful endeavors. I remember the first time I saw him, he was playing Cupid in "Xena: Warrior Princess."
I just re-watched Dredd (in 3D) last night and Karl Urban does SUCH a fantastic job in it. That movie never got a fair shake and is so completely underrated. I’d love to see a sequel for it. And for anyone that has seen it but not in 3D, I know that it’s a dying tech but if you can find a 3D TV and a BluRay player (even a PS4 for example), check it out. It’s almost like a painting, especially in the slo-mo sequences, with how much work they put into the various layers to give it depth, perspective, size, and scale. Alex Garland wrote it (28 Days Later, Sunshine, Ex Machina, etc.) and some say he shadow-directed it too. Anyhow, would love to see Dredd 2. I also loved Urban in the Riddick series, and DOOM, and a lot of other roles in films that weren’t huge but have sort of become cult classics over time as opinions change.
That show was just beginning to hit its stride when it got pulled! I was so disappointed. I already loved him from playing multiple characters on Xena. But I don’t enjoy The Boys and am missing getting to watch him perform.
@@SPQRKlio Nice to meet another fan of Almost Human. I was so bummed that show didn't run longer. Great cast. Karl should be in the upcoming Star Trek movie. No doubt he has other projects coming, as well. Luckily for me, I like The Boys.
Agreed, Almost Human with a second season would have been great. They were just starting to understand how to best write for the actors for their characters and getting to a compelling story for the plot. There’s not much even like that show now on basic cable. He and Michael Ealy were great (if you liked Ealy, check out Showtime’s miniseries Sleeper Cell; it’s a terrorist thriller that will keep you captivated. There’s two seasons as well).
I wish Steven would actually pronounce “cavalry” correctly… It stings doubly so coming from him given that A. He’s a LotR fanboy, and cavalry is a deciding factor in several battles, and B. He’s a Catholic, and “Calvary” (the incorrect way he pronounces the word) aka Golgotha is already the name of the hill Jesus died on. Shame on him, I expected better.
@@barbarahill9176 it’s long since evaporated because I’m sick and tired of people mispronouncing the word. I mean, c’mon, calvary is arguably even more difficult to say than cavalry, yet it’s one of THE most common mistakes I see (or rather hear) native speakers make, more so even than “nucular”
His real voice has a much lighter tone than many of the character he plays. He often plays gruff characters with these deep grating voice, it's almost strange to hear how he really sounds when he's being casual.
It’s so funny because once you see him in an interview, you start to see him in every movie you watch. I was watching the boys and then I randomly thought, “I feel like rewatching LOTR”. So I did and in two towers I was like, “is that billy butcher?” And sure enough.
I love how much people love New Zealanders! Within the past month we've seen PM Jacinda, Taika and now Karl. Other NZers living in America to have on are...Martin Henderson, KJ Apa, Melanie Lynskey, Rose McIver, Anna Paquin, Keisha Castle-Hughes.
I almost expected that some computer genius in the background would quickly add laser flashes to the recording and they would then show it in the credits.
@@andreasmerkel5717 It would have been awesome, but don't think it can be done off the cuff like that. Has to be prepared in advance. I wouldn't be surprised if they actually do something with the tape in retro, on a future program! ☺

For anyone curious - the tattoo slightly visible from Karl’s right wrist under his shirt / jacket cuffs is AY above an infinity ♾ loop in memory of his costar Anton Yelchin; Karl was the eldest of the principle cast and Anton the youngest (18 years différence) yet they had a real bond
Bless Colbert for always keeping the LOTR love alive and well, especially whenever he gets a chance to nerd out and interview anyone from the LOTR/Hobbit franchises, hahaha.
I once went to a convention and I didn't know Karl Urban was there, I went for Brent Spiner (Data from Star Trek, he is so nice), I am very shy, and out of a sudden, Karl Urban had his arm around my shoulders saying something along the lines of 'Why are you asking him for an authograph? I'm a better Star Trek character!' I just looked at him STUNNED, I had no idea what was happening my voice disappeared, he IS perfect for Butcher in 'The Boys', he acts just like him
"he acts just like him" Did he also swear in a Mockney accent? Which admittedly has improved a lot by this last series, given that there were moments in the first series where he sunk to near Dick van Dyke levels.
I've been saying it for years, even before people bandwagoned on him, Karl Urban should be in every video game adaptation and comic book movie. They criminally underused him with that stupid character in Thor. He should be "a" list marvel hero or villain. He is just too good.
I'm not even the biggest Marvel-comic nerd, and I can tell you that the character they based him off of for THOR3 was an interesting character who had a really cool story arc that allowed him a meaningful death that served as a redemptive arc AND allowed Thor to save the day ("I can't save the day, but I can save you so that you can save the world" kind of thing). Instead, he got to be Cate Blanchet (who is amazing in THOR3, no diss here)'s errand boy, the punching bag for jokes, and has a blink and you'd miss it redemptive death at the end. [Granted, they did even less with Lee Pace's character in the MCU, and Ronan the Accuser has an amazing arc in the comics]
And the proposed plot for the sequel they planned when making the first one is controversial, it's from a existing comic and has Dredd going up _against_ democratic activist because he believes Humans aren't capable of the judgement to control themselves. But it got shelved because Dredd didn't do well enough at the box office.
Brilliant interview. I'm obsessed with the train of topics and how much I could relate. Yes, I, too also only want to talk about LOTR and Taika Waititi.
Most underrated actor in Hollywood. Best portrayal of Bones we could have possibly imagined. His American accent is commendable because it’s so weird hearing him in his native NZ accent. I wish they made a Star Trek TV show with Urban playing Bones with his metaphors.
I have loved Karl Urban since his Xena days, so underrated! Love Pathfinder, Riddick, and the Boyz, should've also made hot celeb lists for the last 30 years. Hope he continues to get more offers, I'd watch anything he was in.
Karl's Dredd movie was better, but it didn't have enough of what makes the comic strip unique. The beginning and end were fine, but the middle was just another shoot-em-up.
Wow. I was not expecting big bad "Butcher" to be so anxious and shy. Sure, he pulled it off without a hitch (obviously not his first Rodeo), but his nerves were apparent as he sped through each story and exchange. He even appeared a bit star-struck in Stephen's presence. Understandable but unexpected. Goes to show that even talented actors who face cameras as a career can still experience stage-fright and the associated anxiety that affects so many of us when speaking before a live audience. Gives me hope that I can push through the fear and, with practice, find some measure of confidence in front of a crowd.
Was he in Bourne Supremacy too? I'll have to rewatch it. I loved his character in RED. And I really want to hear some behind-the-scenes stories about having to fight Bruce Willis. 🤩
As much as I wanted to hear about the boys, it’s always great to see an interviewer actually talk about something they actually care about. Like Stephen with LOTR
As a Kiwi (New Zealander) I’m pretty proud of how well he has done. I love his films, haven’t seen The Boys yet but looks cool. I also remember him in his start out role in Shortland Street, New Zealand hospital based drama/soap where he played a gay nurse. Always been a great actor and getting better looking with age 😜😍 Stephen is obsessed with LOTR so Jacinda (our Prime Minister) arranged for him to get some authentic calligraphy done by the people who did it for the movie, he was fan girling so hard!
You should check out The Boys, it's insanely good. Its also got another kiwi in the antagonist role (Antony Starr). Just be aware that it's very graphic.

@@u.synlig - Sure Keith does, but what about Karl? ;)
The moment Butcher said *Oi*
*That moment..that little Moment is called Happiness*
Both Karl Urban and Chris Evans have done so much for the nerd community, bringing to life so many novel, comic book, fantasy and cartoon characters to life.
Stephen is the only talk show host I can watch and not cringe at. Genuinely enjoys talking to his guests and lets them talk.
Weird to hear Dredd and Billy Butcher sound like someone who won't immediately put you in a coma if you step just a little out of line.
Yep. I was expecting him to give Stephen "a right good slappin" before calling him the "c" word. Color me disappointed.
@@errcoche you can say cunt you know
That is how a star should be. This guy is a throwback to the good old days.
Karl's face while holding that fish was like an avatar for how a man must be.
Its because he’s a New Zealander. We are a very humble people. No matter how successful we become, still normal grounded people.
When's that?
I laughed out loud when he said "yeah I know Taika"
Unexpected punchline lol
The fact that their mums were friends and they hung out as kids is so cute
this guy's incredibly brilliant but criminally underrated.. he nails every role he's in, and he steals every scene he's into even with the "a-list" actors he's with
Weird seeing Butcher so polite and jovial.
New Zealanders are so talented, friendly and funny. Absolutely love them.
When I was 17, I kind of fell in love with a Kiwi girl who was visiting Austria. She had a sunny smile, a big heart and was over all the personification of the feeling you have when everything is going right. Two years later I went to NZ for half a year and I was shocked. They almost all were like that! So what other choice did I have than to fall in love with the whole country?
Yeah, his cockney accent is awful in the boys 😂, but he still makes the character very entertaining
Thank you 😊 😜❤️🇳🇿
Check out MIHO WADA jazz/punk musician from NZ. She and her bands are quite wonderful
@@kJ922-h3j English is not my native language but i'd swear Butcher is talking like an australian, not a brit. But that what makes the character funny
I have enjoyed all of Karl's work.
Honestly, underrated for his abilities.
Ty Sir
na. we all know he's the man
I liked him in Riddick Movies and is says a lot that he was able to survive the one called Vin
Wait, he was in Riddick?! How did I miss that?
@@TheMissEuphory he's a Necromonger (Vaako), he appeared in "The Chronicles of Riddick" and in "Riddick" but not in "Pitch Black"
It's weird to see him not cursing 🤣
Karl & Stephen going fishing. I would watch that
that moment when it took you 20+ years to realize that the guy is not even American. like ive seen this guy on the screen since i was a kid and he is such a good actor that i never questioned the fact that he was not american with his accents and acting abilities.
Every time I see Karl Urban in something I have a really hard time reconciling the character he’s playing with all the other characters he’s previously played because he embodies them so completely. My husband and I were watching The Boys and I mentioned that it was hard to think about him as McCoy and his mind was blown because he also had completely put that out of his mind
at first I thought it too, with Simon Pegg also in the show and what not. But as it went on, he couldn't be a more perfect Billy Butcher
I just realized I feel exactly the same! 🤯
I had no clue he was Skurge, McCoy, or in LOTR till now.
And I've seen all those movies.
Fucking Diabolical.
Karl Urban has had quite a career. He's been in an awful lot of successful endeavors. I remember the first time I saw him, he was playing Cupid in "Xena: Warrior Princess."
Caesar too!
I remember him from Xena too!
I'm with Stephen on being a nerd with Karl as Eomer. 💕 Karl will always be Eomer and William Cooper in my heart. 💕💕💕
He's so talented! Also loved him in Almost Human.
Loved him and Ealy on that!
Aahh yes! I've been looking for this comment. I still watch it whenever I binge on Karl's movies. Wish they could bring the show back.
Wish we could see a bit more of Karl Urban and Stephen talk about Lord of the Rings. That was not enough.
I don't disagree with you, but honestly we got more than I expected.
There's always hope for a web exclusive
@@jordinagel1184 Where's your sense of humor for that?
I loved it when Karl and Stephen were lasering each other. Priceless!
They should show it again, but this time adding special effects of the lasers coming out of their eyes. It would have been a blast!
Working on sets it was refreshing to see an Actor especially Karl explain what we all see during filming. Sometimes is very comical.
I live to see Stephen interview LOTR people, it doesn't matter what they are currently doing he will spend at least half of the time discussing LOTR haha just love his passion so much
For anyone curious - the tattoo slightly visible from Karl’s right wrist under his shirt / jacket cuffs is AY above an infinity ♾ loop in memory of his costar Anton Yelchin; Karl was the eldest of the principle cast and Anton the youngest (18 years différence) yet they had a real bond
I love that we got a Two Towers interview from Karl Urban! Colbert appreciates the geeks
Glad to hear that cheer!! Well deserved!
I'm a better Star Trek character!'
I just looked at him STUNNED, I had no idea what was happening my voice disappeared, he IS perfect for Butcher in 'The Boys', he acts just like him
Did he also brag about the fish he caught?
"he acts just like him"
Did he also swear in a Mockney accent? Which admittedly has improved a lot by this last series, given that there were moments in the first series where he sunk to near Dick van Dyke levels.
@@RichWoods23 No of course he spoke in his normal accent lol
He should have said "Oiiiiii!"
@@RichWoods23 There's plenty of kids in the South of England that do dodgy mockney accents that Karl's interpretation is not entirely out of place!
Karl seems like a chill down to earth guy who loves life. So refreshing
20 years!!!! I remember watching and rewatching, in one day
I've been saying it for years, even before people bandwagoned on him, Karl Urban should be in every video game adaptation and comic book movie.
I swear he is so talented.
they can use him again like they reused Josh Brolin!
They should’ve cast him as Wolverine in the MCU, I also loved him as Bones in Star Trek!
@@ytuser_3122 same and I complete agree!
The world wants more Karl Urban as Dredd. Pretty sure Karl also wants to do more Dredd but the powers that be are reluctant.
+1
And the proposed plot for the sequel they planned when making the first one is controversial, it's from a existing comic and has Dredd going up _against_ democratic activist because he believes Humans aren't capable of the judgement to control themselves.
But it got shelved because Dredd didn't do well enough at the box office.
god he would be so good as wolverine
Guy is a true star. Charms you with ease.
Ol Billy Butcher. I’m obsessed with this show.

Brilliant interview. I'm obsessed with the train of topics and how much I could relate.
Yes, I, too also only want to talk about LOTR and Taika Waititi.
After he did judge dredd, he was up for another one, he had a petition going online, I haven't heard anything since then

Dredd and 'Bones' McCoy 💪
I also liked him in the 2nd Bourne movie
Bro you gotta see him as "Butcher" in "The Boys". Dude is just real Badass.
Been waiting to see someone mention his character from Zena! Maybe it's a little too far back for some people. ☺
I also watched the tv series Xena. It was the first time I saw Karl Urban. Been a fan ever since.
Billy Butcher 🔥🔥🔥
It blows my mind how from Doom, when I first saw him to now, he has remained awesome.
Unlike Sylvester Stallone, Karl Urban can play (Judge) Dredd without removing his helmet, just like the original 2000 A.D. comic source.
Its a pass!
@@mannylugz5872 - You look ready.
I always wonder why karl urban didn't get a sequel
Karl's Dredd movie was better, but it didn't have enough of what makes the comic strip unique. The beginning and end were fine, but the middle was just another shoot-em-up.
He actually insisted on keeping the helmet on in order to stay true to the character.
Stephen: Was that terrifying?
They were screaming death
I like when Steven get to show how he is a huge LOTR fan and a geek.
Ofc Stephen is going to talk LotR and I'm here for it. Karl Urban in those films was a treat.
This could have easily been a triple extended interview without any complaint
Thought he was brilliant in The Bourne Supremacy too. He's been in so many great films.
Was he in Bourne Supremacy too? I'll have to rewatch it. I loved his character in RED. And I really want to hear some behind-the-scenes stories about having to fight Bruce Willis. 🤩
Well, well, well, if it isn't The Law.
As much as I wanted to hear about the boys, it’s always great to see an interviewer actually talk about something they actually care about. Like Stephen with LOTR
the clapping. the screaming. sounds so natural
It’s nice to have a late night host who kinda understands the pulse of the country
How can we not have had more Dredd yet? Karl always does a spectacular job.
Proud of him too. Haha yeah, Shortland Street was the first thing I saw him in!

My first Karl Urban was as Cupid! 🥰
You should check out The Boys, it's insanely good. Its also got another kiwi in the antagonist role (Antony Starr). Just be aware that it's very graphic.

Karl Urban never disappoints! I've loved him since he was Cupid on Xena: Warrior Princess, hahaha. So seeing him as Eomer in the Two Towers back in 2002 was an even more special treat! Glad to see him be a part of so many franchises, lol.
Hahah I just wrote about that. To me I can't watch any other Julius Caesar than Karl's version on Xena.
Technically, they should have called his Cupid character by his Greek name, Eros. Cupid is his Latin name.
Xena!!!
