Trevor made a great point comparing politics and sport. I'm a Kiwi and loyal All Black supporter. But I can accept a loss as long as my team gave it their best. Can you imagine Trump and his supporters even admitting defeat.
in the philippines, we had a very similar election in 2022. it was akin to Obama vs Trump. On our side was the most productive VP our country's ever had, on the other side was the son of former dictator Ferdinand Marcos. The lead up to the elections tore families and friends apart. There were a lot of trolling and threats on social media. Marcos Jr won. Two years later, we've moved on with our lives, and it turns out, Marcos Jr was on the liberal side. He even turned his back on former allies that had personal agendas in pushing him to run. Those former allies (the President from the previous administration, and his daughter who became Marcos' current VP) are the ones with the rabid fanbase a la MAGA-heads (look up President Rodrigo Duterte for more context). Any chance they get, they'll still harass and insult anyone who mentions or shows support for the former VP, even though they won.
You should probably get your hormone levels checked if you spend any amount of time watching a foreign "comedian" who has built their entire career inside the United States by shitting on the United States.
I am glad to see how much happier Trevor is now. Of course I miss him on the Daily Show, but Trevorr is more important than that. We bow to you South Africa for nurturing a not just a national treasure but an international treasure.
I also appreciated his early exit from the Daily Show. I’m sure there was lots of pressure to stay. We need Trevor to stay healthy and stick around for awhile!
The point Trevor made about how people overseas spend more time criticizing the people they voted for makes *perfect sense.* Americans just want to win at politics. People in sensible democracies actually want to hold their political winners accountable.
To be fair when its a local election and involves a mayor or some such the people will criticize them but if theres ever a split in the voters and they know the opposition has an equal chance to win then they'll spend more time attacking the rival over their own parties representative Which is overall dumb because the people still suffer when the crappy guy stays regardless of party
Don't blame the people, blame the ridiculous "largest minority wins even if it's not a majority" election system the US has. In that system, letting criticism build for your party's guy helps elect the guy you disagree with even more. So people naturally get afraid that criticizing their own guy will get someone even worse in power.
Sometimes, it is ridiculous though. The current president of Philippine is Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son of an infamous corruptor-dictator, the late Ferdinand Marcos. Recently, people criticized him for using the presidential helicopter to go to a concert. I was like, 'Duh, you voted for the son of a corruptor. What do you expect?🙄'
Very good point about politics. Here in Canada, everyone I know directs 90% of their complaints at the party they voted for (myself included) and not really much at the opposition parties.
Man, sorry we gave you guys Trumpsters. I know America didn't cause those people to be stupid enough to become obsessed with a politician that's not even from their country, but we did produce Trump, which should be a war crime on its own.
I suspect that might have more to do with all your malcontents being on the social media of US news organizations and politicians complaining about the people who would be their opponents were they to move here. I don't understand it but I see it every day.

The greatest national anthem is the Irish National Anthem, The Soldier's Song Amhran Na Bhfiann. "Soldiers are we, whose lives are pledged to Ireland ... Sworn to be free, no more our ancient sireland, Shall shelter the despot or the slave." - Great lyrics and set to a great tune.

As an American who grew up outside of the USA, I always thought it was very weird and cult'ish to have national anthem and standing ovation at a sporting event that isn't internationally competing.
Isn’t that part of some brainwashing scheme? Americans sing their anthem all the time, first thing in class and also in sporting events, they wave their flags everywhere, they swear to God in courts, the Bible is in public schools, Hollywood make Americans believe the USA saves Humanity in every movie, Veterans are honoured in various occasions… All that participates in the cult of war and the sense of imperialism that exists in this country. Most Americans feel entitled while they really shouldn’t. Maybe the worst thing with Americans is the love for money. They’ve associated God with the dollar… and another thing is how fake they can be with one another, which is something tourists very often tell about Americans. That’s because nothing is free in the US and people see a possibility to make money in every new relationship. Americans learn to hate people who are different. It starts internally: republicans hate democrats, white folks hate black folks and Latinos, rich people despise the poor (thinking they’re poor because they deserve it). In foreign affairs, Americans unite together in the hate of Arabic and so-said non-capitalist countries. Americans love guns and will always vote for millionaires. Isn’t that sick? Once again, they love money, so any millionaire is a model by principle, even if it’s Donald Trump. When it comes to the gun culture, that’s partly a legacy from the gold rush but also because people distrust each other (which started during the gold rush) and rightfully their government. So, basically, what makes the USA a country is the dollar, common hate for anticapitalism among American citizens and the wrong idea that the USA is the greatest democracy in the universe and have the duty to spread democracy all around the planet. But this unity is only possible with some brainwashing (anthem, flags, God mentions, dollar) that an American can finally realize by traveling abroad.
Can we also have an appreciation moment for the band? It was such a nice touch for them to play Grazing in the Grass by the South African legend Hugh Masekela as Trevor walked out ☺ I love that!
I love his interviews so much. I haven't kept up with his specials yet and need to, but hearing him just talk like this was always my favorite. So insightful.
The South African and New Zealand national anthems are also really beautiful and worth listening to. Both are multi-lingual anthems. In terms of the flag and patriotism I think that patriotism can easily be a gateway drug to nationalism. Patriotism on it's own is not bad but it is becoming a tool to isolate nations and create "them and us" mindsets. Someone who is patriotic and well travelled is usually very understanding of other nations and feels a bond to other countries. Someone who is patriotic and has not travelled at all is often very narrow minded and not really someone with a good understanding of other people that share the world with them but are different to them.
Nkosi Sikelele has to be the one that makes me cry. Because the first time I saw it play as an anthem and not a protest song, i was a teenager watching Nelson Mandela take power. The most unfathomable feeling.
its also essential to binding a nation together. things like giving back to a nation is only really possible when backed by sometimes irrational emotions like patriotism. i also think the idea its a gateway drug is a very university-educated perspective. we can't trust the masses. lets guide them. i think they are capable of thinking for themselves.
If Trevor thinks all anthems are about how beautiful the country is, he should listen to the French one. It's literally describing a bloodbath ! To be fair, it dates back to the French revolution, which were violent times. But it always feels weird to hear it sung by football/soccer players before a match. Like... do you intend to murder the other team and decapitate them ?! 😅
I absolutely love when comedians from other lands share their perspectives on America. Especially Trevor and Oliver, our WEIRDNESS takes on a whole new level 😂😂😂😂

So lovely seeing and hearing Trevor again, the Internet misses him and his astute insights. However, as a women with dual citizenship (French and American), I must say : have you heard the lyrics of the French anthem ? It's a revolutionary song about toppling down tyranny that literally says that we'll soak the fields with our ennemies' blood.
And I'm not surprised. Who was it that helped the Americans out against the English? Of course both have gangster anthems. They toppled one of the greatest world powers at the time. They're kinda like America's older brother.

The thing Trevor said about his American friends running into international trouble is so on point, too. When I worked in South Korea and things were getting dicey around 2017-2018, my other nationality coworkers asked me, "If you hear anything from your government, could you let us know?" Like if the US was going to do evacuations or something, they asked for a heads up, because they wouldn't know otherwise. 🥲 America has problems, but just for that reason, I'm happy to be a US citizen.
Didn't work out for Khashoggi. But that was Traitor to be Trump and the Saudi 'prince?' Now he threatens all of us Ameicans in our own country. Time to sing him our not a dictatorship anthem: "And our flag is still here, bich."
Most Americans I talked to that spend quite some time in Europe say that the mayor difference is the almost total absence of fear in Europeans. And because hate is just a symptom of fear... you figure out the rest.
Really? Such a nirvana Europe is? Do your homework. Homily as garbage. Or they may not fear as much but there is a whole lot of hate bubbling under the surface pal. I just can't stand garbage cutesy homilies- as if we can all learn from your unmitigated genius.
But they can't figure it out on their own. Create a closed circuit in any group and you will eventually get them all to repeat the same message. No human should live in an imprisonment of the mind, imposed by greedy dictators who think their will is supreme. How have we not risen above this as a species?
Unfortunately, fear is coming back in European countries as we import all of American habits and culture, thus the rise of hate and its political parties everywhere 😢

Our national anthem being "foreshadowing" of bombing other countries is hilarious. I still have a few personal issues with the history of the anthem, but this was such a great interview. EDIT: I don't like nor approve of the senseless bombing of other countries from our country. I often detest things occurring in the USA and choices being made. It's funny to me in the way dark humor is funny. It's the realization being made of it being in our anthem and the correlation to the fact that we actually do that.
The lyrics hit different if you imagine it playing during shock and awe 'the rockets red glare, bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night, that our flag was still there' Like yeah Saddam just try to stop it

@@arlom5132Even when it comes to defending Ukraine, the U.S. does it because it benefits them (they don’t want Russia to overtake the American position as the world’s leading superpower, especially from a military standpoint). His government had nothing to gain from protecting those unfortunate Tutsis who lost their lives gratuitously.
I first remember seeing Trevor Noah on “Gabriel Iglesias Presents Stand Up Revolution” back in 2012. Gabriel called him a superstar in the making, and he was right! It’s amazing seeing how far Trevor has come and where he’s headed next.
Ukrainian anthem is also not like many other countries', it sings literally about how people will fight for their freedoms and liberties, and all the enemies will melt like dew in the sun...
The chorus of the French anthem can liberally be translated as “kill! Kill! Blood makes the grass grow!” “To arms, citizens, Form your battalions, Let's march, let's march! So that their impure blood waters our furrows!”
@@DneilB007 any nation using words that can be translated as "impure blood" in their national anthem is a nation that may be too backwards for modern existence.
The American anthem talks about the flag surviving bombs, so it's a bit sassy and emphasizes strength of perseverance. The French anthem literally talks about blood and violence (cutting throats) their citizens will wage against tyranny, so it's a bit intimidating; more of a warning in the form of a sentence. Meanwhile, the UK's closest thing to an anthem talks about well wishes for their monarch.
The Austrian anthem describes our scenery in slow motion. It's the opposite of catchy, and hardly anyone knows the words. People usually sing the first half of the first verse and the second half of the third, and nobody ever remembers the second verse.
Finland's was written before independenve and contains on equal measure longing for own country, war and battles and how beautiful the country is. I think anthem can tell quite a lot of the country. Ours somehow manages to condense our history to 11 verses although usually only two are sung.

As a non-American, Star Spangled Banner does hit different. However, I would like to say the Filipino national anthem does say, "Never shall invaders trample our sacred shore," and our anthem badass too.
Ooo! That kind of hit me in the feels. I like the that. Respect. Plus, knowing a little bit of your nation's history (as an outsider), I felt that! I pray that's true forever. Kudos to the post who wrote that.
National Anthem that created during war time are pretty badass. Our Vietnamese Anthem is technically being written as a marching song to the battlefield. There's a verse in there goes: "Our flag, red with the blood of victory, bears the spirit of our country The distant rumbling of the guns mingles with our marching song. The path to glory passes over the bodies of our foes."

As A South African from Pretoria in Gauteng have supported you when you started being a comedian ❤❤❤❤ I am super proud of you. Fly high Trevor
til there is more than one Pretoria! thank you :-)
Trevor made a great point comparing politics and sport.
I'm a Kiwi and loyal All Black supporter. But I can accept a loss as long as my team gave it their best. Can you imagine Trump and his supporters even admitting defeat.
True.
A lot of sports fans claim outcomes are rigged, tho.
Can you imagine democrats accepting that they lost the 2016 election?
No they won't.
thats fair, you're comparing crazy with oranges
in the philippines, we had a very similar election in 2022. it was akin to Obama vs Trump.
I love how Trevor can have a dig at a country in such a polite way.
That's what I like best about him. He's polite but hilarious at the same time.
Trevor Noah was a comedian?
He's literally shitting on it the entire time lol
You should probably get your hormone levels checked if you spend any amount of time watching a foreign "comedian" who has built their entire career inside the United States by shitting on the United States.
Most Americans don't realize the joke is on them.
Trevor was destined to be where he is, he fits perfectly.

I am glad to see how much happier Trevor is now. Of course I miss him on the Daily Show, but Trevorr is more important than that. We bow to you South Africa for nurturing a not just a national treasure but an international treasure.
And he's a lot chubbier! I kept looking at his cheeks and thinking, this man has been chilling 😅
I also appreciated his early exit from the Daily Show. I’m sure there was lots of pressure to stay. We need Trevor to stay healthy and stick around for awhile!
Elon musk, ab devilliers, Candice swanepoel and Christian Bernard 🇿🇦
The point Trevor made about how people overseas spend more time criticizing the people they voted for makes *perfect sense.*
Americans just want to win at politics. People in sensible democracies actually want to hold their political winners accountable.
It's culturally indoctrinated within a vast endemic of mis-/uneducation😢•••
To be fair when its a local election and involves a mayor or some such the people will criticize them but if theres ever a split in the voters and they know the opposition has an equal chance to win then they'll spend more time attacking the rival over their own parties representative
Which is overall dumb because the people still suffer when the crappy guy stays regardless of party

I think we tend to criticize what we care for or about. You wouldn't vote for the opposition party anyway, so what's the point.
@@kloakovalimonada Yeah, like "you were the chosen one, [Politician]! You were to bring balance to the country, not leave it in darkness!"

Trevor is great, good to see him again. Wish it was more often.
The interrupting & clarifications between Noah and Stephen, particularly at 3:26-4:56, gives off such sibling energy.

Trevor has had as much of a positive impact on human society as anyone with his humorous insight, and uncanny knack for getting to the heart of a matter without offending others.
I hated that he left the show, but if he can take his unique perspective to a wider audience with appearances such as this, then Godspeed Trevor.
I hated that he left the show too.
Why did you specify 'human' society lol
I've always love Trevor as a host on the Daily Show. But I love him even more after listening to his memoir BORN A CRIME. Such an intelligent, empathetic, and entertaining guy. I laughed and cried while listening to it.
That's a VERY VERY astute observation. I've lived in Korea, Barbados, the UK and Canada and it holds true. People criticize the person they elected into office.
Love that Trevor picked Hugh Masekela's "Grazing in the grass" song for his intro. RIP Mr. Masekela.

It felt super awkward, like Colbert trying to one up noah and interrupting him and have the last laugh, even trying to break down his metaphors and make Noah's story and jokes look stupid and Colbert's look better.
It's almost as if Colbert felt threatened that if his jokes were better, then maybe Noah would also take over as hidt instead if Colbert.
Too much awkwardness and tension. Didn't feel like old friends at all to me. I don't think they get along or like each other much.
Aww I’ve missed Trevor and his perspective on political commentary. 🌸
I laughed so hard at Trevor's assertion about adding a word at the end of any line in our national anthem, my dog thought something was wrong and ran in circles around the house. Thank you, Stephen for having him on, and thanks Trevor for your original brand of humor.

I love how Trevor is insightful and gives well thought out answers especially when it pertains to America from an outsiders perspective. Many non-Americans just throw the same hateful gotcha-like things when talking about America and it’s exhausting. Trevor actually analyzes and critiques many things and I find that admirable.
I love the way Trevors mind works. And how he puts that out in the world in an intelligent and gracefull and humorous way. And makes you think and see thinks in a different way. Love your work Trevor.
Trevor is the best. I really love to watch these two lovely intelligent witty gentleman talk

Me either 😂
Same!
Yep!!
As an American who grew up outside of the USA, I always thought it was very weird and cult'ish to have national anthem and standing ovation at a sporting event that isn't internationally competing.
that’s because it is 🥲
Isn’t that part of some brainwashing scheme?
As a Canadian who grew up outside of Canada- what a great tradition to show respect for your country!
I think it's okay to do it on big occasions, but in the NBA, e.g., they do it before EVERY game. That's a little weird.
Oh my! I had written some truth about the American brainwashing and my comment got censored!
Can we also have an appreciation moment for the band? It was such a nice touch for them to play Grazing in the Grass by the South African legend Hugh Masekela as Trevor walked out ☺ I love that!

"I think when you hug someone they should feel you" gah dang isnt he precious thats so beautiful and i agree
They also have very similar meanings
its also essential to binding a nation together. things like giving back to a nation is only really possible when backed by sometimes irrational emotions like patriotism. i also think the idea its a gateway drug is a very university-educated perspective. we can't trust the masses. lets guide them. i think they are capable of thinking for themselves.
funny thing is that now we have a "them vs us" mentality in our own countries... Now isn't that great?
Damn, I miss seeing Trevor every day

When I worked in South Korea and things were getting dicey around 2017-2018, my other nationality coworkers asked me, "If you hear anything from your government, could you let us know?" Most Americans I talked to that spend quite some time in Europe say that the mayor difference is the almost total absence of fear in Europeans.

It's the realization being made of it being in our anthem and the correlation to the fact that we actually do that.
double consciousness. I definitely love our country and how our audacity is in our veins but yeah.....
But he was wrong about us being the only one with strong word in their anthem, the french one is defenitly not about our landscape

The Jamaican anthem is the best 🇯🇲❤
The Austrian anthem describes our scenery in slow motion. It's the opposite of catchy, and hardly anyone knows the words. People usually sing the first half of the first verse and the second half of the third, and nobody ever remembers the second verse.
