Man, can you extend this topic because it's easy to understand the value matching but could you expand it with colour theory and mood?, would be sooooo cool!!! ty for your time!
Great suggestion! Maybe I will do it 👍
Yeah, knowing what certain color could go with the variation is a pretty cool tutorial to have.
A simple thing you can do is do the shadows in cool hues and the lights in warm hues, or viseversa. It's mostly about temperature. Also, the temperature is relative. Something fun to try is to do lights with desaturated warm hues and shadows with saturated cool colors. You'll find that you don't even need to use desaturated orange to light blue, if you have lots of blues and apply blue gray to those blues, it will look like the gray color is warm compared to the saturated blues. Try this with different complementary palettes. I find that sky blues with lemon yellows are very fun, but try colors you like :^D
@@jmrivera_piro thank you man I ll try it!
Marco bucci has a really great video on this. He calls them color notes
Thank you! I've seen artists do these pops of color for years but whenever I tried them, they looked random. I would've never thought of the value aspect.
Glad I could help!
SAMEE
this is the first video on color theory that actually made sense, thank you!!
haha happy that it was useful
Dude I had a brilliant light bulb moment with this video about values and painting. Love your work my dude. ❤
Happy to hear that!
My god imagine the amount of experience it takes for traditional artists to do this without that color wheel. Respect fr.
(Edit: I'm starting to feel like this comment came off as making graphical art look easier than traditional. I swear that was not my intention. I'm a digital artist myself. I'm really into graphite and charcoal work but I've also done a lot digital art too. Rn I'm desperately trying to get better at working with colors for both digital and traditional. I was genuinely perplexed thinking about how to use this in traditional.
Please don't think that I'm trying to say digital art is easier. Art is art and there are no rules in art 😊)
This is actually way easier to do in traditional than digital
@@LucasPeinador to figure out the right values like that? Got a hack? Cuz I need help with traditional 😭
@@p__07 I also want to know
@@santiagomalagon9554same here
@@LucasPeinador how do you do the without colours trick??
This is not always true, making sure to keep the same values does not guarantee that the colors will go well together. You should not rely on the gray scale 100% of the time, it can help guide us in our choices sometimes but in the end what will stand out the most in your drawings is the color. Even if you take a turquoise blue with a grayscale value that is almost the same as, say, the red in your character's outfit, your blue may still stand out even if it has the same value as the Red. Contrast is important in a drawing and the gray scale can be useful to help us add it but really the most important thing is the hue of the color.
well 🤷♂️🤔
am i weird for thinking red and turquoise look good together
@@DG_TotiI mean technically red and blue are almost on the opposite of the color wheel so it makes sense. I also like it.
I feel like my brain expanded tenfold. It’s so simple but hearing it explained and put into practice is amazing! I gotta go try this~
You can do it!
My jaw dropped😮 so that's the key I've been looking for!
haha happy to hear that 👍
Same my entire world just shifted 😂
Good way to vary your colours is to add different color bounce light in the shadow, especially the color of the sky. Just color pick from the background
hmm, interesting tip
OMJ. You explained thing I thought I will never understand! Thank you!!!
haha happy to help
you just summed up something ive been trying to do for years into one minute!! this is the first time someone’s explained how to do this and it actually clicked for me!!
haha happy to hear that 👍
I have learned so much from your videos for years and you STILL bring new ideas. Thank you, Lucas!
Happy to hear that!
Omg this is what I've been missing!! Thank you!!!
You're so welcome! Happy to help 👍
Thanks for this. I've been trying to step away from my 'paint by the book' mindset and this is some of the best advice I've seen
happy to help
Thanks it will help me alot in my black and white graphite and ink paintings
awesome 👍
Thank you so much i will treasure this information it's literally what i've been looking for my whole life
Glad it was helpful!
Okey that was actually extremely helpful! Thank you
Glad it helped!
GENIUS!!! THANK YOU!!!❤❤❤
Glad it helped!
This is exactly the explaination i needed
I always wonder how artists implement extra color n it looks harmonize n work so well
It is the value that matters
Thank u so so much
Glad it was helpful!
I've seen a lot of art tip videos, but this one is by far my favorite! I've been trying to implement more interesting colors into my art so I think I'll try out something like this later on
awesome, super happy to hear that
You're such a wonderful teacher! Thank you for providing us with free tips and tricks 💌✨

THANK YOU I’ve always been wondering how people use random colours in their art and have it look so good :0
Happy to help!
oh wait thats so helpful!!! I´ve been strugling with colorful lightning and shadows lately and I didn´t know what I was doing wrong, now everything makes sense!! THANK YOU
Happy to help!
This is my favourite aspect of artworks and I never figured out how to do it. You slay
haha happy it was useful
So in a sens don't strive to make your art more pleasing to look at but add random color of similar intensity to try and fool yourself in doing a better job. Got ya.
hmm 🤔🤷♂️
Omg so THAT’S how they manage to make it look so good 😭
awesome 👍
Thank you so much. Ive loved this style on the more extreme side (almost neon mix colors for eggs for example) but couldnt figure out how its done. This makes so much sense
Glad it was helpful!
My brain just exploded, I don’t know how I never connected value with stuff like this, thank you so much
haha happy to help
Okay this is amazing
happy to hear that
Wow! So simple yet so beautiful result 👁️👄👁️
Thank you! 😊
This is actually blew my mind I didn't know the colors had to have the same value as the base 😂
haha happy it was useful 👍
THIS WAS ALL I NEEDED I've tried to use a variety of colors, and I let myself be carried away by which one "tastes" good, but I don't know anything theoretical I've researched and made it this far, thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Your style is beautiful, it reminds me of Ben Eblen
Thank you! 😊
You art people are insane, thanks for the tip!

You're amazing bro! Thanks for the tip.
Happy to help!
Thanks! No idea how to apply this to traditional art, but thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Oh i didnt know that!! I know about warm and cool color as highlight and shadow but alot of times I have trouble placing them and just place them randomly most of the time, thanks for the tip!
Happy to help!
instead of trying to match the values manually, you can add ur colors on a new layer set to the color blend mode. it just takes the color without changing the values underneath
hmm 🤔 interesting
You can also add a setting to your brush to change the colour of every stroke a little bit. It saves so much time
And what I love to do is to make the transition between light and shadow to be a little bit unusual colour that fits the overall vibe of the artwork
yeah, but that is not the point of the video
If you want to make something black and white then add a white / black layer on top and set the blending mode to color / hue / saturation
yes, exactly 👍 that is also how you can do it
That is very useful! But, I think, you also should think about the environment of the object: if the object will contain some of the colors from background, the whole picture will look more harmonious. So, that's not only about adding chaotic colors, but also to adding colors from one object to another standing nearby :)
happy to hear that it was useful
Your art is very arcane!
haha really? That's cool
this is AMAZING thank you
happy to help
Ive always tried to do this in my art but the chosen colors end up looking way too random 😭 this video helped so much wow
Glad I could help!

what?
So THAT'S how they add color to their art! I had always wondered that and never could figure it out.

That brush you're using, did you make it or did you get it somewhere ? I've been looking for one like this for so long ! Also, thanks for the tips :) I love shading in random colors but it always looks kinda funky.
These are my LP Painting brushes - you can find them in my store
Very helpful thanks !!
Glad it helped!
Would love to see it being applied in a traditional painting. How would i know the values
it is even easier in traditional... if you are painting you just add a little bit of a different colour to your main colour
I use a layer in color mode to make it easier 👍🏼
cool

You're welcome!
Ive been mesmerized by people adding random hues for ages now... i just never understood why it worked for them until now
happy to help 👍
One word: *BET.*
But in all seriousness, this is gonna help so much. I’ve grown extremely enthralled by bright, vibrant colors, and I’m definitely gonna be using this technique.
what?
It is the hardest thing going from graphite to painting. Graphite only works in values, not hues 😭 It is literally 1 hue throughout.
haha
That purple would be AWESOME for reflective light, though. And this type of color addition isn't necessary because art is so subjective. The original painting wasn't dull at all! If you have bright colors, good contrast, or interest in your painting, it's hard for it to be dull. Only go as far as you want to!
Thank you! Cheers!
thank you!!!!

this is so helpful oh my god
happy to hear that 👍
Now I just have to start using color in my paintings lol
haha yeah

Meanwhile my artstyle: *NO NORMAL SHADE ALL OPPOSITE HUE COLOR SHADE* (I use contrast filter on the focus so it doesnt end up looking to crazy and bright)
🤔🤔
How do u change between greyscale and colour
I have a command set in Photoshop
Wow
👍 happy you like it
That's actually a game changer wtf
happy to hear that
AHA I finally know what colour theory is 😭
(Maybe, hopefully)
haha 👍
Thank you. Question at everyone. How would you best translate this into traditional? Making a black white pic of your art and your pencils perhaps?
whit achrilics, oils, and other wet media it is much easier to do this in traditional, then it is in digital
@@LucasPeinador ah thanks, somehow my mind was stuck on pencils
Yea, prominent guy that does it is that marco bussy guy.
👍
Is it possible to disable the color picker on coolorus and show only the sliders?
what do you mean?
How do you swap to black&white temproarily? I use SAI and it doesnt seem like theres a way to consistently check without doing "test color, flatten piece, swap to black and white, undo all, try another color, flatten piece, swap to black and white, undo all, etc."
i was just wondering the same
I have a shortcut made with command + Y
@@LucasPeinador what operation did you shortcut exactly ? like "crop", "scale/rotate", or "flip horizontal" to give a few examples of operations. if you know what i mean ?
I GET IT
great
I love this topic; how can I do this on procreate?
maybe in the future
Ohhhh
haha 👍
Hey I have a question how do pick our colours the fit the values?
by eye... I am training my eye and then I check the values with turning my illustration to a greyscale and back to colour
How do you match the value between different colors? I understand the concept but how do I know that that pink and that blue are the same value? That's where I get tangled up, it's easy in black and white, but once you have purple green orange yellow brown.....
you can switch in digital to black and white and colour
IK THIS SOUNDS INSAINE BUT I DREAMED THIS EXACT VIDEO LIKE 2 YEARS AGO AND THIA GAVE ME SO MUCH DEJA VUE ITS SCARY 😭
haha waw
i am still kind of struggling with the values and stuff
I understand
Bro what app or program are you using?
This is Photoshop
How do you grayscale the drawing?
I have a command set in my Photoshop
Meanwhile traditional artists: 🗿(Cant erase after adding)
sorry 😅
WOW this is actually really really useful !!! I might try this
I'm so glad!
How can I switch to blck n white to color again?
I have set a shortcut in my Photoshop command + y
