I always love hearing him talk about the creative process and how the music seems to find its way to him. And his analogy of classical music vs. rock and roll is as spot on as it gets. I have so much respect for him, and how he refuses to bow to the whims of the critics. They hate that, and he eats it up...it's awesome. Deep down, he's still that down-to-earth kid from Oyster Bay, still a little in disbelief at just what he's accomplished in his life. He's become a star and a legend, but still refuses to sell out. That and his incredible, almost instinctive musical gift are why he has such a long career so far. There's nothing better than getting to live your passion, and he knows how lucky he is to get to actually make a living doing it. That's what being an artist is all about - you do it for your love of the music.
My father & I met & spoke to Billy Joel two different times for about 5 minutes each time at his motorcycle shop on Long Island. My father actually rode with him & a group of people back in the mid 80's. He's a very nice guy, at least to us anyway. He's just like any other nice person you meet... Except that he's super rich & famous ha ha. It's pretty cool that he only lives about 15 minutes away from me on the east end of Long Island.
I love watching all of these interviews with Billy Joel. Reading the book about him by Fred Schruers. Great book. I am a longtime fan and his music keeps me company, changes my attitude, heals me and uplifts me.
If he writes a lot of his own lyrics, I respect him even more. A serious talent, basically a near-legend at this point, his lyrics mean a lot to all sorts of people.
He writes all of his songs including Shameless. The Garth Brooks version is a cover of Billy's original. That said, Billy has done the odd cover himself for singular projects like film soundtracks or other artist tribute albums that have not appeared on any of his own regular albums, as well as at times covers that were basically extras added to his own hits collection type albums.
My theory for the whole Anthony thing after hearing this is that he was thinking of the old Prince spaghetti commercial and he didn’t remember exactly what it was.
