GREAT VIDEO! I really enjoy your videos, Mark. I have a pea puffer in with my male guppies in a 5.5 gallon tank. The reason all is well is 1) the tank is FULL of live plants for lots of coverage and places for ramshorn snails to lay eggs 2) there are a LOT of ramshorn snails. 'Puffy' single-finnedly manages the WHOLE colony of snails by himself. He eats the snail-eggs AND the baby snails. He leaves the adult snails alone. As the adult snails eventually die off from old age, I add more snails from my other tanks. Puffy works everyday checking the eggs. He does NOT bother the guppies. Occasionally the boy guppies try to get amorous with him and he just swims away, lol. LIKE YOU SAY, each puffer has its own personality and I wouldn't tolerate it being aggressive towards my fish. It is one of the great joys of my life to watch this 3/4 inch fish manage this entire snail colony. It is very important to add more snails when the old ones die naturally of old age, after laying lots of eggs in their life-time. 2 years now, this has been going on. LOTS of plants encourage the snails laying their eggs, and give Puffy lots to keep 'interested' in. He carefully SCANS every square inch of the tank for his dinners. AMAZING little fish. I am so grateful to know and be able to observe him.💦🙏🐟😊

hey mark, hope you are healing your back. i have started sleeping on a ''pool noodle'' one of those foam tubes kids play with in the pool. got mine at Walmart for $4. it's tough but i got my life back. perfect spinal alignment at night and let gravity work wonders. keeps me in the 10 hut position all night. start with knees up grab your head board and pull till you pop/adjustment to your back. all the pain goes away suddenly and you will fall right asleep. i used to get a painful pop, but now its almost unnoticeable. i am back to bench and military presses and curls. this i great. btw i am 69 and ripped.
Great vid, mate! Got yourself a new subscriber :D i also use tweezers to feed my little guys, and vacuum up any left over after each meal to help keep nitrates from spiking. I ve only had mine for about 6 months now, and they are the single most interesting little fish ive ever had the pleasure to care for. Love them!!

Thanks for the information. I have 4 in a 29 gallon. When I turned the tank into a pygmy puffer tank, I had to remove all the guppies. One guppy proved illusive, so I left her in the tank. So far, she and the puffers and the bristle nosed pleco seem to be doing ok together. I do plan to one day outsmart the guppy and move her into the guppy tank. I hope the pleco will do okay with them. I'd like to leave him in there.
Nice healthy fish, too many vids have stressed-out puffers in them. I'm setting up a 15-gallon Pea Puffer tank this week. My first try and you gave us valuable information in this presentation 🐡🐡🐡. I use a terra-cotta tray as a feeding station in my tanks.
Thank you so much for this video, I never even thought about the remains of snails rotting away, good clean up tip. Also never seen them eat from a bowl it's adorable. I've been researching these the past few weeks and am slowly getting a tank together, my mum kept them before and is helping me out setting up - there's still things she didn't know either😅

I saw these little guys at a pet store for the first time last week. Now that I see yours I know that the ones in the store were super skinny. It makes me sad.
They are always skinny at the pet stores which is sad. They ate right in the bag while acclimating, you know they are starving. I feed mine live brine shrimp and now they are all chubby little peas lol. I have 1 picky one that will eat nothing but snails. I was hoping he would watch the others and catch on but he looks at those brine shrimp and says I'm not eating that thing!!!

Great video! Beautiful tank!! Plants look incredible! I'm a fish guy and thinking about getting these for my girlfriend, who LOVES the pea puffers. I want to set her up for success. I'm not sure if 2 in a 10g would result in aggression.. probably depends on their individual temperament.. and then i'm concerned we may get a male and female, where the male will stress her out once they mature. Maybe 3 in a 10g? So then I was thinking 1 puffer in a 5g.. but will it then get lonely and without much stimulation while she's at work? I know you can't really put other fish with them.. maybe a large mystery snail? With the feeding.. how would you even go about feeding 1 or 2 of them with live foods? The live food will likely expire by the time even half of the stuff is used up. So then I was thinking maybe a 1g tank of just snails to pull from? .. but then I feel bad for the snails. Would the puffers be happy and healthy with frozen food, freeze-dried bloodworms.. and even.. flakes? anyone's input is much appreciated.

Really interesting, thankyou! I always steered clear of these as my lfs told me that they would need worming once a month and that you couldn't put your bare hands in the tank because they were toxic, but clearly not the case? I'll have to give them a go one day.

I was just think what they would do with larger shrimps and medium crayfish & crabs, when I notice the cherry shrimps in your tanks. How do they do with medium-large invertebrates? Will they only take tiny-small invertebrates or will they go full psycho and take a big Amano shrimp?

From experience they really have different personalities. Some don't bother fish or even baby shrimp and another would annihilate a shrimp colony. What I notice is that a tank with lots of plants is really best for their sanity. No matter their personality they like hiding and exploring. They actually don't mind a "dirty" tank (I do have lots of plants), they are durable. However, snail shells should be picked up.

I have a palladarium for tree frogs. And an infestation of snails. I added two of these, to help. Frogs do eat the snails too. I just hope my measly 7 gal with lots of cover, is enough space.
Hey Mark, Nice video. Will they eat newly hatched brine shrimp, or should I grow the shrimp a few days longer? I have spirulina powder and astazanthan powder for brine shrimp food. Right now, my little Puffer's are on mainly frozen blood worms, but I am growing some snails in another tank.
What a great video. I’ve got 4 in a 40 litre superfish home tank. Shop said it was easily big enough. Should I be worried and rehoused some or wait and see? I keep marine setup and tropical tank. Hi Mark. Thanks for the informative video! I have had 2 pea puffers for about 2 1/2 months in a planted 10 gallon (recently upgraded from a 5.5g). Now that they have matured a bit, it appears they are both males. There is a more dominant one of the two who does occasionally chase the other, but other times they stay together without fighting. My concern is that they have become very shy always hiding in the back corners and can rarely be seen. I went to my LFS and the owner told me to check for signs of disease and to raise my ph (currently at 6.8) which I will work on. I'm wondering if they are stressed because of their living situation being both males and if I need to exchange a male for a female or add more females, how to purchase females only since they are hard to determine sex when young.
It's probably down to them both being male. Take one male back and get three females this will keep him happy. You will then find they will come out more. You can identify females by the lack of the black bar that funs down the underside of the male's. Also the females don't have the blue creses around the eyes like male's do.

I got 4 young peas, but they do live with others, they're doing fine, but I have a 125 litre tank, about 60 gallons I think. I hope it'll work tho. Auch. I was wrong, 125 litres is 33 US gallons

Finally got some and am like an over protective mother lol I have worms on my glass and can not find much information on how to get rid I do have another tank set up if I need to move them....Will I transfer the worms if I move them? Fenbendazole keeps coming up but I live in the UK the only way to get it is in animal de-wormer not knowing the dosage do not want to go down that route. Could you give me an idea of what you would do? FYI mine will only eat bloodworms and are so fat when I got them they were so thin. I have been lucky all the de worming was done before I got them but made sure just in case..
Methylene Blue definitely kills them, but it stains everything. If they're attached to the glass it's likely hydra, and they will kill shrimplets and fry. I'm dealing with it now. I use a turkey baster to carefully remove the ones I see (if you break them apart they just turn into more hydra). The 3% hydrogen peroxide works if you spray in directly on the little monsters. This is in a fry tank too, otherwise I'd probably remove all fish and pour bottles of that stuff in. If you've found a solution, I'd be grateful for the info!
Hey! In my country the fish sellers are usually very good and never sell any fish to bad owners or too many fish in one aquarium, but now I'm confused. There is a dwarf puffer breeder who works at my local pet store and she is very passionate about these lil fish and she told me I could put 10 dwarf puffers now into my 20 gallon tank. Then after testing my water quality she proceeded to sell me 10 dwarf puffers, but when I got home and counted them, there were 13 of these little guys. What should I do?
I got a dwarf puffer today, fed her frozen food (which she was eating at the shop) about an hour ago exactly how the shop said to ( which is the way they feed them, it’s a baby about the size of a baked bean) and she still hasn’t eaten it. Is she just still getting settled in and doesn’t want to eat? Is she just full orrrrrr?

They do look alot of fun! I have sparkling gourami in my bedside tank who are also fun but if I didn't, pea puffers would be my next choice.

Keep bloodworm alive in cold fresh water.

Some will eat processed foods, but I've always used live or frozen.
My DP's have never accepted any food that was not live or thawed frozen.
What’s the smallest tank that a single pea puffer could be in? The LFS has some that are like 1/3”
Hi Chris. With good filtration you could go for a 5 gallon tank. But bigger the better.
How do you get the slow small bubbles all over like this?
I have got 4 puffers in with my endler guppies they seem to be doing ok

Probably move them to another tank.
I have a palladarium for tree frogs. And an infestation of snails. I added two of these, to help. Frogs do eat the snails too.
I just hope my measly 7 gal with lots of cover, is enough space.
Hey Mark, Nice video. Will they eat newly hatched brine shrimp, or should I grow the shrimp a few days longer? I have spirulina powder and astazanthan powder for brine shrimp food. Right now, my little Puffer's are on mainly frozen blood worms, but I am growing some snails in another tank.

They can also take live meal worms (not the super worms), frozen mysis shrimp, and freeze dried krill, slightly crumbled up.

What a great video. I’ve got 4 in a 40 litre superfish home tank. Shop said it was easily big enough. Should I be worried and rehoused some or wait and see? I keep marine setup and tropical tank. I really don’t have any room for anything bigger than what I have. I reply would be really appreciated. BTW water quality is excellent.

I've got a question. Im feeding my pea puffers snails. It doesn't look like they get the whole snail and was wondering if I should really try and pull shells out to avoid a possible ammonia spike?
Hi yes, it's good practice to remove all leftover shells as they never get all the of the 🐌 out and this will cause ammonia to rise. 😀👍

Hi Mark. Thanks for the informative video! I have had 2 pea puffers for about 2 1/2 months in a planted 10 gallon (recently upgraded from a 5.5g). Now that they have matured a bit, it appears they are both males. There is a more dominant one of the two who does occasionally chase the other, but other times they stay together without fighting. My concern is that they have become very shy always hiding in the back corners and can rarely be seen. I went to my LFS and the owner told me to check for signs of disease and to raise my ph (currently at 6.8) which I will work on. I'm wondering if they are stressed because of their living situation being both males and if I need to exchange a male for a female or add more females, how to purchase females only since they are hard to determine sex when young.
It's probably down to them both being male. Take one male back and get three females this will keep him happy. You will then find they will come out more. You can identify females by the lack of the black bar that funs down the underside of the male's. Also the females don't have the blue creses around the eyes like male's do.

I buy all my bloodworm its easier that way.
What type of carpet do you have there? The random oxygen bubbles releasing from the bottom is pretty cool.... or is that from the spray bar pointing downward?

I got 4 young peas, but they do live with others, they're doing fine, but I have a 125 litre tank, about 60 gallons I think. I hope it'll work tho.

Finally got some and am like an over protective mother lol I have worms on my glass and can not find much information on how to get rid I do have another tank set up if I need to move them....Will I transfer the worms if I move them? Fenbendazole keeps coming up but I live in the UK the only way to get it is in animal de-wormer not knowing the dosage do not want to go down that route. Could you give me an idea of what you would do? FYI mine will only eat bloodworms and are so fat when I got them they were so thin. I have been lucky all the de worming was done before I got them but made sure just in case..
Methylene Blue definitely kills them, but it stains everything. If they're attached to the glass it's likely hydra, and they will kill shrimplets and fry. I'm dealing with it now. I use a turkey baster to carefully remove the ones I see (if you break them apart they just turn into more hydra). The 3% hydrogen peroxide works if you spray in directly on the little monsters. This is in a fry tank too, otherwise I'd probably remove all fish and pour bottles of that stuff in. If you've found a solution, I'd be grateful for the info!
will these guys feed on pond snails?
Hey! In my country the fish sellers are usually very good and never sell any fish to bad owners or too many fish in one aquarium, but now I'm confused. There is a dwarf puffer breeder who works at my local pet store and she is very passionate about these lil fish and she told me I could put 10 dwarf puffers now into my 20 gallon tank. Then after testing my water quality she proceeded to sell me 10 dwarf puffers, but when I got home and counted them, there were 13 of these little guys. What should I do?
I got a dwarf puffer today, fed her frozen food (which she was eating at the shop) about an hour ago exactly how the shop said to ( which is the way they feed them, it’s a baby about the size of a baked bean) and she still hasn’t eaten it. Is she just still getting settled in and doesn’t want to eat? Is she just full orrrrrr?
