I remember when this album first came out it was when i just got into their music and had just started smoking pot then i went to one of their shows in Austin those where the days, :)
i love how deloused is all mysterious and melodic and totally resembles what they were going for with the concept of it and how this album is very crazy sounding like they intended it to sound cuz of the soothsayer thing.. and each album has its own great and unique qualities. this bands sick.
I'd have to say it's not the kick drum work that makes the groove hard. It's the ability to so smoothly play all of those ghost notes. I understand it's a pattern, but the control required to make sure each strike has the perfect volume to attain the driving feel of the beat is amazing. Thomas Pridgen FTW!
This art reminds me of this one girl who was a huge tmv fan that I met at a show and became MySpace friends with; she used to do sick drawing of the band. I remember one time she made a really cool drawing on the sidewalk in front of the Fillmore in Denver in 2008. I wonder whatever happened to her
You have to remember that Omar is the one who has the final say when it comes to the music. If he didn't like the drums he'd have Pridgen rework it, it's that simple. Even Cedric's vocals and effects have to get by Omar, and he even offers suggestions to Cedric.
i was doing the same thing, but i was looking for the australian artist ouroboros. just like you i'm glad i found this song. the drummer looks like he loves his job!lol.
@Otherfile1 As soon as I saw "paradiddle" you reminded me of an old jerky boys track I heard. That was a drunk comment so, as you can see, we are legion. LOL. I had to log in to remember what either of us was talking about. Let's hope I don't make that a habit... That said, I really like this track - even sober.
I suppose I've never seen them live but if I wanna throw down, I'll listen to august burns red. I'm sure they mosh live, but I don't see why. THis shit is so groove and funky that I'd just dance!
[Verse 1] It appears to me Quoting alarms The guillotine smirks In your house I smothered Sight unseen Sworn to harm Ground to a powder And soaked through the board [Chorus] Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy When will you flirt with all that's burning? Keep them safe and by your side [Verse 2] Of all that's left A lucid home Anecdote settles in the smear of this corpse If the larvae speaks ask where to go They mount the maker with a sulphur in fume [Chorus] Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy When will you flirt with all that's burning? Keep them safe and by your side [Refrain] Of all the warnings that you gave me With all components in the fault Have you ever heard me scraping? It will be hard to hold [Chorus] Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy When will you flirt with all that's burning? Keep them safe and by your side [Refrain] Of all the warnings that you gave me With all components in the fault Have you ever heard me scraping? It will be hard to hold [Bridge] All I hear Mending the gap Fall in here Might not make it back Call that someone May they hear you Take me with you It's not safe in here [Breakdown] And all you ask is why, why, why And all you ask is why I'm certain you're holding on Mirror floats to the surface Holding on [Refrain] Of all the warnings that you gave me With all components in the fault Have you ever heard me scraping? It will be hard to hold They lost the presence they were holding Looks like the tenants flickered off If the cell that holds me breaks me It will be hard to hold Produced By Omar Rodríguez-López Written By Cedric Bixler-Zavala & Omar Rodríguez-López Release Date January 23, 2008
no squirrel i know what ur talking about. There are hints of "mainstreamishness" in TBIG, illyena, goliath, ourusborus and agadez all have catchy hooks, but are still way out in space as far as radio friendliness goes.
It teaches precision and speed. Think of it this way: if you're a drummer, and you can play metal well, and you can also play jazz well, you're going to get twice as many gigs as someone who only plays metal or jazz exclusively. I have a friend who plays jazz, and he can't play metal, he just doesn't get it. So I'm teaching him metal while he teaches me jazz. It's just more variety, nothing that important.
I have a playlist of Mars Volta, King Crimson, Tool, and BTBAM. Whenever I put it on, I can't walk in any single time signature for days, and sex is in 5/8 alternating with 7/8 interspersed with 3/4. :D
"It like a donkey choking a waffle" ??? Ha ha ha, I love that sentence. I don't think those words have ever been uttered in that order before (nevermind to describe a piece of music - awesome). I would like to see a donkey choke a waffle.
i was thinking on downloading it but i think i will wait cuz i got two great distractions "calibration" and "the apocalypse inside of an orange" omar rodriguez rocks
The Definite Circle of life... The ultimate creation and the absolute devastation... This vicious circle... The "one"... The Complete... Everything.... The very end, is leading to the Zero... to the begining.... That is what the symbol of "ouroboros" Means..... the continuous reicarnation of everything!
holy shit man i see them april 14th and i already have my ticket to go...it's going to kick so much ass but i dont think ill be alive to tell anyone about it.
That was kind of my point. I can only do certain things. Exactly, metal is fast, and not much else. You'd be suprised, though, bands like Tourniquet and Atheist are very technical, and the drummer from Tourniquet plays ghost notes all the time. He's great.
why the hell is everyone hating on pridgen...the kids got thick funky grooves and the unrelenting style that seems to bug all of you is what this album was totally calling for. I think that TMV just keep getting better and besides, the kid was endorsed by zildjian at 10 for a reason.
Oh yes it is. I've seen him do other stuff with his right foot, too. He can do single foot triplets faster than John Bonham. There's a video of him playing on a DW performance series kit, and he does some really cool stuff, and fast I might add, with his right foot. But hey, if you can go as fast as him with either foot, then kudos to you, my friend, cause that's fucking fast.
Sounds like a distortion combined with a couple different pedals (maybe a .125 delay, some harmonic) and then take your guitar pick; turn it sideways and grind/strike the string in a palpitation rhythm(not any means of strum).
What's with this massive backlash against Pridgen? A few weeks ago everyone was saying he was amazing. I understand that he is a pulsing drummer, rather than being focused on the dynamics, but I think it suits the feel of TBiG. Haven't heard him do any of the back-catalogue yet, though. Apparently he's not so hot with that.
I agree, but they're pulling it off well enough for this album, I just hope if they go for something less constantly heavy next time, he follows. His drumming fits real well with this album, but if they're going to vary their sound, and they sure as hell ought to, then he's going to have to slow down a bit. Or a lot.
I would have got into TMV a lot faster if I'd heard TBiG first, so i know what you mean. Having a superficial appeal is not a bad thing, so long as you maintain the depth as well. I think they do that well with this album. I got into TMV because of Televators/Roulette Dares, arguably the most direct songs on the first album (with Inertiatic). Some people just associate catchy with crap. Those people need to gain some perspective.
Did you engage grammar in this one comment to prove your point? Personally, I prefer to call him Jooey Jonsinet. So there, how's that for correct spelling?
@Breaker8nine Makes me wonder of they've ever read anything by Neil Gaiman... that's one of the themes of The Sandman, eventually being forgiven. I've heard that Omar and Cedric are total geeks, so probably. :P
I feel like Pridgen's style really fits the bands style overall, and he brings a lot of energy.
Don´t you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy ♫
Frances the Mute essentially got me into prog. Soon after, I started listening to bands like King Crimson.
I remember when this album first came out

I like the part where Cedric and Omar blew my mind. I think it's around the 0:00-6:36 mark.
I'd have to say it's not the kick drum work that makes the groove hard. It's the ability to so smoothly play all of those ghost notes. I understand it's a pattern, but the control required to make sure each strike has the perfect volume to attain the driving feel of the beat is amazing.

Okay the mars volta is my favorite band now
every second of this is just PERFECT!
i love this song
it sounds tight when your stoned
one of my favorite songs

i love this song so much
this song is complete insanity and i love it
I don't hear heavy metal, I hear heavy funk and that's a great thing.
best song
the drums really make it what it is and top it off
damn I'm gonna miss this band!
Happy they're back? 😁
If the larvae speaks ask where to go...
epic!
this is an amazing song
i was doing the same thing, but i was looking for the australian artist ouroboros. just like you i'm glad i found this song. the drummer looks like he loves his job!lol.

[Verse 1]
It appears to me
Quoting alarms
The guillotine smirks
In your house I smothered
Sight unseen
Sworn to harm
Ground to a powder
And soaked through the board
[Chorus]
Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy
Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy
When will you flirt with all that's burning?
Keep them safe and by your side
[Verse 2]
Of all that's left
A lucid home
Anecdote settles in the smear of this corpse
If the larvae speaks ask where to go
They mount the maker with a sulphur in fume
[Chorus]
Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy
Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy
When will you flirt with all that's burning?
Keep them safe and by your side
[Refrain]
Of all the warnings that you gave me
With all components in the fault
Have you ever heard me scraping?
It will be hard to hold
[Chorus]
Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy
Don't you ever, ever, ever trust my mercy
When will you flirt with all that's burning?
Keep them safe and by your side
[Refrain]
Of all the warnings that you gave me
With all components in the fault
Have you ever heard me scraping?
It will be hard to hold
[Bridge]
All I hear
Mending the gap
Fall in here
Might not make it back
Call that someone
May they hear you
Take me with you
It's not safe in here
[Breakdown]
And all you ask is why, why, why
And all you ask is why I'm certain you're holding on
Mirror floats to the surface
Holding on
[Refrain]
Of all the warnings that you gave me
With all components in the fault
Have you ever heard me scraping?
It will be hard to hold
They lost the presence they were holding
Looks like the tenants flickered off
If the cell that holds me breaks me
It will be hard to hold

if you can, see them in a lounge type setting. there is a lot going on and it gets lost in a large venue.

seriously, theodore was amazing but pridgen just kills
@17Revolution76 Mars Volta are way beyond Staind or Disturbed. They can hang with anybody.
Welcome to UA-cam.
I see them tomorrow!!! and I understand you...
amazing
"It like a donkey choking a waffle" ??? Ha ha ha, I love that sentence. I don't think those words have ever been uttered in that order before (nevermind to describe a piece of music - awesome). I would like to see a donkey choke a waffle.
variety is important. in my opinion anyway... its how you create new styles.
AMEN!!!

Those dreads on Thomas's head must have grown muscles of their own and now he uses them to beat the drums in addition to his arms.

Nuckin' futz indeed!!!
at 5:34 the song explodes in this massive ball of fucking purple waves of energy
or something like that

how is that sound at the beginning made
Sounds like a distortion combined with a couple different pedals (maybe a .125 delay, some harmonic) and then take your guitar pick; turn it sideways and grind/strike the string in a palpitation rhythm(not any means of strum).
@YertlePsychoStain No. The song is just called Ouroboros.

tony royster jr. is a beast himself
right, sorry this isn't rush and energetic up-tempo drumming is what this funky outing was calling for.
@RawbThatPunk
FINALLY someone else noticed that! hahahaha. i thought i was the only one.
@martinxander
Pridgen has confirmed it man. Shit's going to be SWEET.
This is like Spain on Acid.
read the names of the bands that he mentioned carefully.
Man, this almost sounds sped up...but if it is, then I lose the faith in humanity this song gave me.
is there a live video version of this anywhere ?
FUCK ME! That verse was fucking ace!

@007Pogo I already listen to all that bro.

these guys r from hell paso tx .
Oh god, I NEED a high res of that first image.
Anyone got it?
@beaverteeth92 Check out Zoltan Csörsz, Pete Riley, or Nick D'Virgilio. They have similar styles.

hey dude where can i find the firs tpicture from the vid?
Thomas Pridgen the drummer?!
@Rockfan182fuckyeah he probably didn't have to practice the song too much before nailing it man, he's a beast XD
Nope, but I read, listen, and watch the interviews that Omar and Cedric give.
omg
@007Pogo No doubt, bud.
HAHAHA it like a donkey choking a waffle
@Otherfile1 How about a tomcat or a nightcrawler? That's not nice at all!
Did you engage grammar in this one comment to prove your point? Personally, I prefer to call him Jooey Jonsinet. So there, how's that for correct spelling?
jesus how many people are part of the mars volta????
@Breaker8nine Makes me wonder of they've ever read anything by Neil Gaiman... that's one of the themes of The Sandman, eventually being forgiven.
